METHVEN LIONS CLUB & MT HUTT SKI AREA SKI EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS The aim of the scholarship is to further develop the skiing of our young students in the local district. It is awarded to a maximum of two young people, up to the age of 11 years, for a season of free ski instruction, under the Mountain Sliders Programme on Mt Hutt. Applications close Wednesday 13 th June. Applicants must present themselves on Saturday 16th June on Mt Hutt (with gear) at 1pm at the Ski School. Should the day be unsuitable weatherwise on the 16th, report on Sunday 17th June. Principal’s Column Chris Murphy When I was in Standard 3 my Dad was very nearly banned from every municipal rugby ground in Dunedin (He would be mortified if he knew I was writing about this). The fact that this very nearly happened is not a reflection on him so much, as a reflection on how much he loves his rugby. Dad, is his younger years, did get the opportunity to don the Blue and Gold jersey and make the odd appearance on Carisbrook for his province. He, like us all, got older and all he wanted to do, after he had hung up his boots for the last time, was to instil some of that fervour into his boys. Lots of things Dad did for us were great and really supportive and I still have fond memories of us sitting at the back door washing and nuggeting our boots on the Friday night. The next morning we’d be up and eager, sometimes with slightly sore necks after Dad had slipped a rugby almanac under our pillow so we could absorb it in our sleep. We’d pile into the car and head off to any one of the city’s frozen fields. Dad would look after our gear and have drink bottles and the half time oranges at the ready. That’s when my Dad would leave and ‘Shout at the Ref Dad’ and ‘Yell at the Kids Dad’ and ‘Almost Get in a Fight with the Opposition Dad’ would arrive and take over. It was big burden to bare as an eight year old. He cringes when I bring it up now, and so he should. The whole thing had the opposite effect of what he was trying to achieve, which was to be enthusiastic, supportive and encouraging. As parents and supporters of children’s sports we do need to do all the things my Dad was trying to do but need to be mindful that it doesn’t up exhibiting itself in the same way. It’s important that we promote competition and winning because that teaches life skills like perseverance, tenacity and resilience. But we also need to teach kids that being a good sport, respecting decisions from coaches and referees and how to accept defeat graciously also enable us to learn equally valuable life skills. We do this by modelling effectively as a parent. One more thought to leave you with. Twenty years ago this month a significant snow storm occurred with another two later in that year. Between them they brought enough snow that it stayed around for six weeks. Maybe it is Nature playing catch up as both May and April experienced below average readings.... Average rainfall – April 67.6mm (14mm below average) and May 33mm (42mm below average!). May’s total is the 3rd lowest since the weather station began in 1988. During the last week the maximum temperature was 16.1 degrees. BD
