Welsh Achievements - in science, technology and engineering (PDF

Increasingly the items, images and sounds with
which we surround ourselves are the products of the
application of science, technology and engineering. The
name itself, ‘application’, implies that those engaged
in these three areas of human activity have conceived,
developed and brought to completion something which
could be applied; they have innovated.
Innovation knows no
boundaries. The thought
processes which lead to a
‘new’ idea are present in
everyone and whilst industry
and academe seek to
structure research and
development to progress
logically to innovative
processes and products, the
‘Eureka’ moment does not
necessarily come about as
the direct result of a planned
programme of work.
Inspiration and innovation
often travel together and the
creation of an environment
that stimulates, encourages
FoREWoRD
and recognises good ideas
can only bring economic
benefits. The Welsh Assembly
Government lays great stress
on the value of innovation in
maintaining and improving
the prosperity of companies
in Wales. A range of
initiatives and competitions
is in place from primary
schools through secondary
education, university and
industrial activities to
encourage innovation and
already, many of the ideas
that have emerged have
been translated into
viable economic projects.
