the Dean 

Dear friends, 

intellectual life at the Law school has 

never been more vigorous. we have 

launched an ambitious new program on 

Law, public policy, and society, intended 

to make the Law school a nationally 

recognized leader in developing 

innovative solutions to complex public 

policy problems. it will bring new faculty, 

new capstone courses, policy-related 

student internships, and revitalized 

public policy research. 

our 2009 fiscal year and the new 

Lapps program launch began spectacularly 

when the robina foundation 

affirmed our vision by granting $6 

million to help make it possible. the 

robina foundation’s generosity and 

insistence on transformational thinking 

were leveraged with matching funds 

from the University, for a total of $10 

million committed to the Lapps 

initiative. John borrows, an internationally 

recognized authority on indigenous 

rights and comparative constitutional 

law, will join the faculty in september 

as the first holder of one of the new 

robina-supported chairs. 

the energy in the building is palpable. 

applications to the Law school are up 

sharply, as are the academic credentials 

of incoming students. giving at all levels 

increased significantly in fiscal year 

2008; participation rates improved as 

well. that support is needed now more 

than ever. 

the economic crisis that has swept 

the world, that has each of us counting 

our losses, has hit higher education 

hard. state budget cuts and declining 

endowments threaten to undermine past 

success and imperil future progress. but 

in hardship lies opportunity. as John 

Kennedy once observed, “the chinese 

use two brush strokes to write the 

word ‘crisis.’ one brush stroke stands 

for danger; the other for opportunity. 

in a crisis, be aware of the danger—but 

recognize the opportunity.” 

we are using this period of economic 

turbulence as an opportunity to 

sharpen our priorities, streamline our 

operations, and increase productivity, 

while continuing to build a world-class 

faculty and student body. with your 

help, i’m confident that the past will be 

the prologue to a brighter future.

the Law school’s vital role in our society. 

i am eager to step up that role with your 

help in the months and years ahead. i

JIM AND SHARON HALE EXCELLENCE IN 

LEGAL EDUCATION FUND 

James t. hale, former U.s. supreme court 

clerk for chief Justice earl warren, and former 

executive vice president, general counsel, and 

corporate secretary of target corporation, 

and his wife, sharon, gave $500,000 to the 

Law school for a fund to be used at the 

Dean’s discretion, making it especially timely 

and valuable for the school, which is deeply 

engaged in refining its academic mission and 

strengthening its role in society. “the Law school 

provided me a great foundation for my career,” 

Jim says. “this is our way of giving back.” the 

hales’ gift enables exciting steps in curriculum 

transformation, addition of faculty, and progress 

toward other strategic objectives such as guest 

lectures by historic former Law school faculty 

such as Jesse choper and arthur Miller. 

LINDQUIST & VENNUM DEAN’S FUND 

Lindquist & vennum, a long-time partner 

with the Law school on many fronts, made a 

$500,000 gift commitment: the Law school 

will receive $250,000 to endow a scholarship 

in the firm’s name and $250,000 to create a 

dean’s discretionary fund for new initiatives. 

the firm’s total contributions to the University 

of Minnesota now surpass $1 million, with 

nearly all of its support designated to the Law 

school. in addition, individual firm partners have 

contributed more than $300,000 to the Law 

school. the Law school is proud to recognize 

its close association with Lindquist & vennum 

and the firm’s generosity by naming the former 

Dean’s conference room, room 385, the 

Lindquist & vennum conference room. 

JOSEPH E. WARGO AND EDITH P. WARGO 

RESEARCH SCHOLAR FUND AND EDITH 

P. WARGO AND LINDA I. WORKMAN LAW 

LIBRARY RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY 

ENDOWMENT 

the Law school was the grateful recipient 

of $425,000 from the estate of edith powers 

wargo. “throughout her life, edith had a keen 

interest in learning across a wide spectrum 

of areas, including the law,” says Linda irwin 

workman, wargo’s niece and representative of 

her estate. one of Mrs. wargo’s will provisions 

created a $250,000 endowment that will support 

a Joseph e. wargo and edith p. wargo research 

scholar focused on international law. edith and 

Joseph graduated from the Law school in 1938. 

Joseph was a long-standing judge in anoka 

county and edith was the founder of the Law 

school’s association for women graduates, Lex 

alumnae—the first association of its kind in 

the United states. another generous provision 

of edith’s will established the edith p. wargo 

and Linda i. workman Law Library research 

technology endowment fund of $175,000 to 

support leading-edge technology at the library.

DR. MATTHEW STARK CIVIL RIGHTS 

AND CIVIL LIBERTIES FACULTY AND 

STUDENT AWARD 

Matthew stark, ph.D., committed $150,000 

to establish award funds at the Law school, the 

college of education and human Development, 

and the college of Liberal arts at the University 

of Minnesota. Dr. stark endowed these funds 

to provide awards to students and faculty 

members who have demonstrated distinguished 

service, writing, teaching, involvement, or public 

leadership in one or more of the following areas: 

civil liberties, civil rights, public education, and 

social justice.

DENNIS AND GAIL MATHISEN 

SCHOLARSHIP 

Dennis Mathisen had first-hand experience 

with struggling to pay for his education. those 

memories and a generous spirit prompted 

him and his wife gail to create a $1,000,000 

scholarship endowment at the Law school. in 

making this gift, Dennis cited the wonderful 

and irreplaceable education he received at the 

Law school, characterizing his contribution as a 

very small recompense for the benefits that he 

received. 

BRUCE AND TRACY MOOTY SCHOLARSHIP 

the Mooty family and the gray plant Mooty 

law firm continued leadership support of the 

Law school, contributing $530,000 to endow 

the bruce and tracy Mooty scholarship. the 

scholarship recognizes students who have 

demonstrated leadership, community service, 

problem-solving skills, academic excellence, and 

the promotion of justice for all. tracy and bruce 

Mooty’s gift honors Dean David wippman and 

encourages generous support of the Law school 

in challenging economic times. commitments 

from the John w. Mooty foundation trust 

and the gray plant Mooty foundation honor 

bruce’s leadership at the firm and the couple’s 

dedication to community service. 

LINDQUIST & VENNUM PLLP 

SCHOLARSHIP 

the Lindquist & vennum pLLp scholarship is 

the newest of three endowed scholarships for 

which this generous partner of the Law school 

has provided major support. the Lindquist & 

vennum foundation committed $500,000 to 

the Law school, half of which established this 

vital support for students. 

JUDGE DONALD D. ALSOP SCHOLARSHIP 

Lead donors James J. bender and gary 

J. haugen, other former law clerks, friends, 

and colleagues of Judge Donald D. alsop, 

established an endowed scholarship to honor 

Judge alsop’s commitment to the administration 

of justice and the rule of law, and to express 

their gratitude for his dedicated public service, 

his mentorship and friendship. the scholarship 

was enhanced by a generous gift from Judge 

alsop. 

DOBIÁŠ HUMAN RIGHTS FELLOWSHIP 

william e. Drake endowed the Dobiáš 

human rights fellowship with gift of $100,000 

to honor his friends and former landlords, 

přemysl (“prem”) Josef Dobiáš and his wife 

hana. although not Jewish, as a young lawyer 

Dobiáš joined a resistance group in 1938 to help 

smuggle Jews through slovakia and hungary 

into the relative safety of italy. the gestapo later 

arrested and tortured Dobiáš at the Mauthausen 

concentration camp. he has helped several 

historians by recounting his experiences in 

Mauthausen and has assisted simon wiesenthal 

in bringing concentration camp guards to 

justice. During the holocaust, he remained in 

czechoslovakia. the fellowship funds students’ 

human rights work throughout the world.

GALINSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

HONORING WALTER F. MONDALE 

Murray and elaine galinson created a 

$100,000 scholarship fund at the Law school 

in honor of their friend the honorable walter f. 

Mondale and in celebration of his 80 th birthday. 

in recognition of the vice president’s lifelong 

service to his fellow citizens, the scholarship 

supports law students who aspire to careers in 

public service and, as did the vice president, 

need financial assistance to attend the Law 

school. 

PROFESSOR BRUNO H. GREENE AND 

BLANCHE GREENE SCHOLARSHIP 

Josephine bachman established a scholarship 

honoring her parents, bruno and blanche 

greene, with a gift of $100,000. bruno greene 

was a University of Minnesota Law school 

professor. he also served as Director of the 

Library and built its foreign and international law 

collection to be one of the best in the country. 

professor greene’s devotion to his students 

inspired bachman’s decision to create this 

lasting tribute to her mother and father at the 

Law school. 

GEORGE LUDCKE PUBLIC SERVICE 

FELLOWSHIP 

inspired by the public service work of the 

late george Ludcke, lead donors Kelly & berens 

and best & flanagan, along with members of 

the class of 1978, made gifts to endow a fund 

that enables one or more law students each 

year to do public service work on such issues as 

disability rights, environmental rights, children’s 

rights, or similar social concerns. 

THE HONORABLE MYRON BRIGHT 

SCHOLARSHIP 

in gratitude for his guidance, friendship, 

and support, stacy L. bettison and william M. 

hannay iii, along with other former law clerks, 

friends, and colleagues of Judge Myron h. 

bright, created this fund to recognize his life, 

career, and tireless work to advance the rule of 

law. 

SIEBEN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Lead donor Michael r. sieben, harry a. sieben 

Jr., John p. sieben, and anne sieben wolsfeld, 

all graduates of the Law school, endowed the 

sieben family scholarship. in keeping with the 

family’s commitment to public service, the fund 

supports students who are interested in public 

service and participation in the Law school’s 

clinical programs. 

JOHN GOETZ BICENTENNIAL FREEDOM 

SCHOLARSHIP 

inspired by his class year—the United states 

bicentennial year of 1976—and the freedom it 

commemorates, John goetz established this 

endowed scholarship to provide educational 

opportunities to academically promising 

students of color with financial need. 

C. BLAINE HARSTAD SCHOLARSHIP 

with a lead gift from charles rubenstein, 

friends and colleagues established the c. blaine 

harstad scholarship to memorialize his life. 

the scholarship honors Mr. harstad’s academic 

and legal excellence and his service to the Law 

school and the legal profession. 

CLASS SCHOLARSHIPS 

Members of the classes of 1957, 1968, 1983, 

1988, and 1998 celebrated their reunions and 

honored the Law school by endowing new 

scholarships. the minimum to endow a 

scholarship is $25,000. each class raised more 

than the minimum necessary to endow its 

scholarship fund.

Dear Partners in Excellence, 

Thank you for your support of 

the Law School! Every gift listed in 

this year’s Annual Report represents 

the immense impact of alumni and 

friends—individually and collectively—in 

sustaining the Law School’s tradition of 

excellence. 

As the 2007-2008 Partners In 

Excellence National Chair, I have 

been overwhelmed by the renewed 

and deepening generosity of our 

alumni and friends. With a record high 

number of alumni participating and a 

tremendous leadership gift of $100,000 

for immediate use by Vance Opperman 

(’69), President and CEO of Key 

Investment Inc., we raised $805,570 in 

gifts to the Partners In Excellence annual 

fund, a 41% increase over the prior year. 

Total gifts, including gifts to the annual 

fund and restricted gifts for special 

purposes, increased 230% over last year 

to approximately $5.5 million. 

We are an outstanding law school 

precisely because of the support we 

receive from our friends and graduates, 

and I extend my sincerest thanks to you 

for your dedication to the university of 

Minnesota Law School. 

Additionally, I want to thank those 

alumni who give generously of their 

time and talents. By advising students 

on their career paths, serving as adjunct 

faculty, or making the time to attend 

law school events, you highlight for our 

students the importance and strength of 

our alumni network. 

In difficult times and prosperous ones, 

alumni and friends have supported the 

Law School they know well and care 

for deeply. The Partners In Excellence 

annual fund is one of the best ways 

to strengthen the Law School and 

provide the resources necessary for it 

to continue to be among the top law 

schools in the country. I am proud to
