Environmental Impact

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
• Plastic Bottles = BAD for the environment
• Why?
▫ Most plastic bottles end up in landfills and
contaminate the soil with their toxic substances
▫ Plastic, although durable, degrades s l o w l y
▫ Groundwater – contaminated if the toxic chemicals
sink deeper into the ground
▫ Soil – plants cannot grow easily
▫ We are polluting our world; making a large mess out of
this planet by excessive litter

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
• Why?
▫ Production process of water bottles involves the usage
of chemical pollutants (ex. fossil fuels)
▫ Approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil—enough to
run 100,000 cars for a whole year—are used to make
plastic water bottles
▫ Transport of plastic bottles (shipping, land delivery)
burns even more oil → colossal waste of energy
▫ All of this severely impacts the environment – air and
water pollution

THE PLAN
1. ―Faucet Stations‖
2. FDR Campus Walk
3. Water Fountains → ―Faucet Stations‖
1. Encouraging students to bring their own bottles
2. Quick, easy, convenient “fill-up & go”
4. Locations (Table of Changes)
5. ―Working Backwards‖ Approach
6. Last Day Of Bottled Water Sale – end of
semester

WHAT ARE “FAUCET STATIONS?”
• Faucet Stations:
▫ Similar to water fountains
▫ Tap/dispensers rather than to drink from
▫ Benefits
• Name – questionable
• Design (push-faucet)

“WORKING BACKWARDS”
• As of Mid September, water fountains have been turned
back on
• Roosevelt Community needs to be notified (DATE)
• Kiosk orders on a weekly basis, so the week of Nov. 22
must be the last week that orders are placed
• The last water bottle sold will be on (Dec. ___)
• Inform community at assemblies on (Dec. ___)
• By start of semester 2, NO MORE BOTTLES!
