Painted by Francis Bindon around 1735, this portrait is a sympathetic portrayal of the writer
Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal and The Drapier's Letters. The
portrait shows Swift at a time when several of his close friends, including John Gay and John
Arbuthnot, had died, while the great love of his life, Esther Johnson, or "Stella", had died ten
years before, leaving Swift increasingly disillusioned and facing a lonely old age. The artist, a
friend of Swift, conveys much of the sadness of these years in this down-to-earth portrait.
Born in Co. Clare, Bindon travelled extensively in Italy, and afterwards studied with Godfrey
Kneller in London. A landowner and member of the Royal Dublin Society, he was
independently wealthy and therefore not obliged to produce glamourous images of his sitters.
Swift, who had moved to Ireland from his native England, had come to identify with his
adopted land, and led several public campaigns against measures he thought would damage
Ireland's economy. He noted, with characteristic acerbity, in his diary for June 1735 "I have
been fool enough to sit for my portrait at full-length by Mr. Bindon.' However, this half-length
canvas, showing the satirist without the wig so common in eighteenth century portraits, was
painted probably in the same year and is a sensitive portrayal of the writer. Apart from
churchmen such as Dr. Delany and Archbishop Cobbe, Bindon is thought to have painted the
blind harper Turlough O'Carolan, in a portrait now in the National Gallery of Ireland. He also
studied architecture with Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, and went on to design country houses,
including Bessborough, Woodstock and Castle Morres, in Co. Kilkenny. This portrait was kept
by Jonathan Swift in the Deanery of St. Patricks and was bequeathed to his housekeeper Mrs.
Ridgeway, in whose family it was preserved for many years. It was acquired by the Crawford
Art Gallery in January 2007, to mark the accession to the status of National Cultural Institution,
with funds provided by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism.
DAMIEN MATTHEWS FINE ART
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941)
Tifie Beach, Evening
Oil on Canvas, 25" x30"
Signed
Lower Left
Exb: Duveen Galleries, New York, 1925, No.26
This important and exquisite painting, made in 1920 on Lavery's final winter sojourn in Morocco, most
probably depicts the artist's wife Hazel
dusk. They
are seen as
graceful figures
and his stepdaughter
in white, positioned
Alice
on the
strolling on the broadly sweeping Tangier
-
far left of the composition contemplating
beach
one
at
of
the artist's favourite artistic
of paint to evoke the waves'
settings. From a
high viewpoint and
movement, Lavery explores delicate
using strong
modulations
fluid impasto and rhythmic undulations
of sea
-
and atmosphere changes in
hue and tone caused by the evening sun - with subtle flair.
Lavery was attracted to Tangier not only because of the exotic way of life enjoyed in this bustling metropolis
but also because he was fascinated by the vibrant effects of clear North African sunlight
on water and the
pleasurable opportunities he had here to record his rarified perceptions. Such seascapes were within easy walking
distance of his house 'Dar-el-Midfah1, purchased in 1903. These endless painterly variations on a North African coastal
theme, which he made with almost obsessive pleasure, have been compared to works by Monet and Whistler.
Working as a dealer and advisor to collectors since 1989, Damien Matthews offers expert, friendly and impartial advice on all aspects of buying, selling and collecting Irish & International art.
The Facsimile Edition of the Book ofKells
The Book ofKells was created by Irish monks about 1200
years ago to glorify the life of Christ. Richly decorated with
sacred paintings, it is the foremost example of manuscript
craftsmanship of its time. Even as early as 1007 it was
referred to as "the chief relic of the western world."
A magic world of colourful pictures
Of the 680 pages of the Book ofKells, 30 are full
page paintings
which astound in the brilliance
of their colour. The others are decorated
with a wealth of symbolic imagery:
animals, plants
and humans are
carefully
woven into
the text which has been described as "the work of an
angel
rather than a human being".
On view at the Trinity College Library
The
original manuscript
can be seen in the
Library
where it is
displayed
to show a
major decorated page,
and two pages of script. However, the Library approved
the
publication
of a facsimile with the result that a
perfect copy
of all 680 pages of the manuscript
has been created. The edition
is limited to 1480 numbered
copies, most of which are already
in libraries around the world. The end is now in
sight
as the final
copies
are hand-bound in white leather. Each copy is an exact
replica
of the
original manuscript.
How to
Applications for the last remaining copies of The Book of Kells
invited. For further information please
"The two most striking features of the site are the complex of barracks
buildings and the parkland landscape". (EIS)
The imminent development of this hitherto largely untouched landscape, spurred me to
produce the drawings, paintings and lithographs for my forthcoming May exhibition at
Joyce House, Ballincollig, Cork. My sketchbook journey began in mid-summer, when the
trees still had their full canopy of leaves, sheep grazed the pasture and the buildings lay
uninhabited, in semi dereliction. It finished in early winter when the first ravages of man
made change and transformation had begun.
