Celebrating 70 years<br />
Thanks to your patronage, our great staff, dedicated<br />
volunteers and Society directors, <strong>Kerrisdale</strong> is arguably<br />
the busiest community centre in <strong>Vancouver</strong>. We have over<br />
14,000 members, had more than 550,000 visits, and <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
over 400 programs every season to newborns, centenarians<br />
and everyone in between. We’re more than a recreation<br />
centre because <strong>of</strong> the variety <strong>of</strong> programs in arts, education,<br />
health and wellness, sports, martial arts, fitness, and special<br />
events. Our Society-run Fitness Room attracted over 85,000 users with our<br />
drop-in rate <strong>of</strong> $3.00--half the cost <strong>of</strong> Park Board-run facilities--and we still<br />
have a surplus. All our earnings go back to you in subsidies, new equipment,<br />
and facility improvement. One example: we subsidize hot lunches six days a<br />
week to an average <strong>of</strong> 110 fixed-income seniors and provide them a chance<br />
to socialize.<br />
<strong>Kerrisdale</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> Society and Park Board have jointly run our<br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> since the 1940’s. However, the Park Board is determined<br />
to implement a nonnegotiable plan to gut our Joint Operating Agreement,<br />
grab all our revenues to cover Park Board’s chronic budget deficit in the<br />
guise <strong>of</strong> equity, and make one-size-fits-all community centres. Many <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Kerrisdale</strong>’s unique programs, facility improvements, and subsidies will<br />
disappear. Please voice your outrage to Park Board commissioners. Stay<br />
tuned for developments.<br />
