Lisbon
Spread across steep hillsides rising from the Rio Tejo, the
colourful Lisbon cityscape is a mass of Gothic cathedrals,
majestic monasteries, quaint museums, narrow lanes and
curvy, tree-lined backstreets. Ride a bright yellow tram as
it winds its way through the city, stroll alongside Lisboêtas
(Lisbon locals) through the old quarters, and exchange
gossip in a public bath or over fresh bread and wine at tiny
alfresco restaurants as fadistas (performers of traditional
Portuguese “fado” music) serenade you.
Regional Portugal
Regional Portugal has an old-fashioned charm, from the
ancient university town of Coimbra to fairytale-esque
Sintra, a place of richly coloured palaces, mist-shrouded
forests and the craggy ruins of a Moorish castle standing
guard over a sleepy village. So escape the crowds – take a
short bus ride or a walk through the countryside to a land
of rarely visited places that still offer the feeling
of discovery.
Madeira
Located 1000 kilometres south-south-west of Lisbon and
bathed in sub-tropical water, this “Pearl of the Atlantic”
promises an extraordinary holiday experience thanks to its
magnificent scenery, balmy climate, serene vibe, colourful
folklore and its seductive, traditional food. Explore
the historic and enchanting capital of Funchal before
delving into the lush countryside, dotted with towering
peaks, rolling hills and charming villages. Join an iconic
‘Levada’ walk, which follows mini canals created in the
Portugal
Medieval castles, picture-postcard villages, meandering coastlines,
flower-covered hillsides, sun-kissed beaches, dramatic, end-of-theworld
cliffs, wild dunes, protected coves and long, sandy islands
will enchant visitors to Portugal. The nation’s capital, Lisbon,
and its northern neighbour, Porto, are magical places too, with
riverside views, cobblestone streets and rattling trams framed
by looming cathedrals.
16th century to bring water from the rainy north of the
island to the sun-soaked south where crops such as sugar,
bananas and grapes grow. The original settlers chipped
away at the cliffs and tunnelled through solid rock to
make channels and tunnels with a slight slope so that the
water meandered towards its destination.
