Vice-Chancellor’s message An announcement that the Higher Education Funding Council for England is to provide £75 million in additional funding to support Science was very welcome news. As you will have read in Precinct, the University of Liverpool has received millions of pounds of investment in Chemistry in recent weeks, recognising the importance of this subject – but there is always more that needs to be done and we are calling on our partners in schools to help address this. Science subjects are strategically important to the economy and society but vulnerable because of relatively low student numbers. It is now recognised that a key part of the problem with science provision relates directly to the lack of student demand and that urgent action is required in schools to address this. Chemistry, physics and some engineering subjects are also particularly expensive to provide which adds to the financial impact on institutions. Nationally, the new funding from HEFCE will support chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, and mineral, metallurgy and materials engineering, to help maintain provision in these subjects in universities and colleges while demand from students grows. Too often when we discuss science provision we get caught up in stories about more science department closures, but where there have been some closures, this has often coincided with expanded departments elsewhere. We cannot overestimate how important it is for the UK’s economy that we continue to produce graduates in these key subject areas. The UK science base is second only to the US – and this has been achieved on lower funding than our competitors. If this success is to continue adequate funding in schools, colleges and universities is essential. A fresh approach Meet new Chief Operating Officer Ron Calvert S eeking the views of students and academics is key to the University’s continued success, according to new Chief Operating Officer Ron Calvert. He came to the University in November following a successful career in the NHS and he says the health and education sectors share many of the same challenges. Ron said: “Some of the approaches which are necessary in each organisation are very similar, and the issues that they face are similar too. There is a public accountability factor and a sense of obligation to society, and both hospitals and universities work in a quite political environment in a fast moving world.” Ron was born in Newcastle and was educated in London and Salisbury before returning to his home town to study Zoology at University, and later an MBA. He discovered a talent for squash and after graduation played at a semi-professional level, while working in the family wholesale bakery business. When the miners’ strike hit the North East, the business was forced to close and Ron took his management experience to the Royal Hull Hospitals. He then moved on to University College London Hospitals. When their Chief Executive was headhunted to University Hospitals of Leicester, a £600 million NHS trust which provides more healthcare than any hospital in England, Ron followed him, taking the role of Director of Operations. He says he is now looking forward to using his skills in the higher education sector. “The University is a fascinating environment,” Ron added, “and one of the A bigger Russell The Russell Group of research-led universities has increased its total membership to 20 institutions. Queen’s University Belfast has been invited to join the association, of which the University of Liverpool is already a member. The Russell Group has also appointed its first Director General. Dr Wendy Piatt will take up her appointment in January 2007. She is currently Deputy Director in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and is former Head of Education at the Institute of Public Policy Research. things that most attracted me is the added dimensions of both commercial operations and the international initiatives. “The other thing that attracted me here is that I had met the senior team and it struck me that the University of Liverpool is a university which is on the up. It has a very talented top team which is striving to get it there. This is obvious in the huge range of capital projects which are underway and international partnerships which are being forged, and there is a big emphasis on research, as you would expect from a Russell Group University. } The University is a fascinating environment.” Ron Calvert “I am meeting lots of people at the moment and still forming impressions but an early view is that I would like to see better engagement with students; as consumers and partners. We need to canvas their opinion more often. I also want to meet more academics who are working at the sharp end, because they are our key players. I want to learn from them, hear where they think I can help and get them involved in shaping the future of the University. I know the Vice-Chancellor’s message is ‘invest, collaborate and grow’ and I want to back this New appointment The Cockcroft Institute – one of the UK’s flagship centres of excellence in accelerator science – has appointed world-renowned physicist Professor Swapan Chattopadhyay as its Inaugural Director. Professor Chattopadhyay is currently Associate Director at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in the US and is renowned for breakthroughs in the physics and technology of particle beams and photon science. He will take up his new post at the Cockcroft Institute in March 2007. philosophy by ensuring there is a devolution of power and responsibility more towards the front line of staff. His hobbies include following the fortunes of Newcastle United - though he’s reluctant to discuss their form this season! He’s also a keen film fan and is eagerly anticipating trying out some of the region’s famed golf courses. 03
