Becoming part of the Department of Residence
Life staff is another great way to get involved. All
of the Residence Life offices need student workers.
Students may also apply to work at the Commons
front desk. Becoming a resident advisor or a
summer conference assistant — after your freshman
year — is also an excellent opportunity to combine
work with leadership development and residence
hall involvement.
2 LIVING ON CAMPUS HOUSING GUIDE
Texas A&M University and the
Department of Residence Life have
developed rules designed to protect
the safety, health and comfort of all
residents. These rules are outlined in the
Texas A&M University Student Rules and
the Residence Hall Handbook.
Student rightS And reSponSibiLitieS
Student rights in our community include:
• to socialize in the room;
• to sleep and study without disturbance;
• to live in a supportive and stimulating
community;
• to live in a safe, secure, healthy and clean
environment;
• to enjoy access to a variety of programs,
services and facilities; and
• to involve themselves and others in promoting
an educational, open, respectful, responsible,
caring, involving and celebrative community.
Student responsibilities in our community
include:
• to consider the needs of other residents and
balance these with each student’s own needs;
• to promote care of the physical facilities,
equipment and services;
• to communicate with other residents and staff
members, letting them know when they are
disturbing another student;
• to demonstrate a commitment to the
community by getting involved;
• to promote campus and individual safety; and
• to demonstrate dignity and respect for all
individuals.
Students interested in being a resident advisor
should talk with their residence hall staff or call the
coordinator of residence life at (979) 845-2235.
Anyone interested in applying for a student-worker
position should stop in at any of our Residence Life
offices across campus or simply contact Residence
During the year, students will interact
with a wide variety of Department
of Residence Life staff. Perhaps
the most important resources will be their
residence hall staff. The primary goal of
the Department of Residence Life is to
facilitate the formation of a community that
encourages the personal, social, cultural
and academic development of the students
living in the residence halls. To read more
a more inclusive on-campus community,
grounded in respect and appreciation for all
individual differences. It provides programming
opportunities and resources to educate, enhance
and encourage the appreciation of diversity and
The community director (CD)and graduate
hall director (GHD) are important resources in
your residence hall experience. The CD or GHD
has overall responsibility for the hall. The CD or
GHD provides individual and group assistance
to residents, advises the hall council, supervises
resident advisors, and works with staff and the
hall council to establish a supportive and positive
learning environment in the hall. Students should
feel free to talk with the CD or GHD about any
personal or academic issues or suggestions for hall
reSident AdviSor
The resident advisor (RA) is one of the most
helpful and resourceful fellow students you will
interact with at Texas A&M. RAs have been
carefully selected because of their leadership
potential, interpersonal skills, positive attitude and
sense of commitment. As a peer, the student’s RA
provides basic information and referral services
and assists residents in adjusting to campus
life, including helping with academic concerns,
roommate relationships, homesickness and
other matters. The RA is responsible for helping
residents meet each other and build a strong
Being a leader in a residence hall is an experience
to always remember. Being able to lead where
you live and meeting hundreds of your fellow
Aggies with whom you share a common bond
How engaging and energetic your hall council is
depends on your level of involvement.
Activities of an active hall council include
promotion of the Aggie Spirit, inclusive
leadership, cohesion of all community members
General Information
hALL ASSignmentS
Residence hall spaces are distributed
on a first-come, first-served
basis. This process is driven
by the priority date, which is
defined as the date the housing
application is received in the
Residence Life Housing Assignments
Office. Based upon the
number of current students who
reserve their housing space for
the fall semester, the Housing
Assignments Office will determine
the number of students
who will be offered residence
hall space for the 2012-2013
academic year. Every attempt is
made to place students in the
residence hall requested. However,
each building has limited
space, and students already
living in a specific residence hall
receive preferred assignment
to that hall. If students do not
receive the hall or room assignment
of their choice, they will
have an opportunity to request a
change after arriving.
hALL ChAngeS
If a student is not happy with his/
her building assignment, he/
she may request a hall change
on the first day of class each
semester at the Residence Life
homepage, http://reslife.tamu.
edu. The number of requests to
change halls as well as the availability
of space in each hall will
determine the student’s chances
for a hall change. Hall changes
are prioritized according to the
priority date and are approved on
an availability basis by the Housing
Assignments Office. Students
should contact their residence
hall staff for information when
checking into their hall.
Safety
Reasonable steps are taken to provide
a safe and secure environment for
all students living in the residence
halls. Students can help keep the halls safe
and secure by managing their own personal
safety and by following a few simple rules
listed here.
eLeCtriCAL power StripS
And extenSion CordS
When additional electrical outlets are needed,
residents must use UL-approved electrical power
strips with built-in circuit breakers. Multiple plug
adapters and extension cords are not permitted.
Power strips should never be plugged into another
power strip. Power strips should never be placed
above the ceiling tiles, put underneath carpet,
or stapled or pinched in any way. Running power
strips underneath the mattress is prohibited.
Key/CArd
Students will receive a room key and university
student ID card, which provide access to their hall
and room and should be kept in their possession
at all times. If a student loses a key/card, he or
she should inform his/her residence hall staff
immediately. It is the student’s responsibility
to keep the room key and access card in his/
her possession at all times. Keys and cards are
never to be loaned out to anyone. For safety, keep
rooms locked.
ID card. However, any security measure is only
as good as the resident allows. Residents should
not prop open outside doors. This will set off
alarms. Residents must not allow visitors to enter
the residence halls unescorted and should report
any suspicious activity to hall staff immediately.
Students should be sure to lock their door when
