Annual Report 2009
Letter from the President
Dear Friends,
We the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk joyfully and generously minister
to the people of God in New York, Connecticut and Vermont.
We are proud to say that since 1924 the Ursuline Sisters have
ministered to the needs of God’s people. Since we started in the
first school that we set roots down we became established in the
ministry of education in parish owned and operated schools.
Sr. Mairead M. Barrett
Over the years, we have been blessed to receive feedback that there
is “something” different about being taught by an Ursuline. This “something” was our belief
in and genuine caring for the whole family and ensuring that they had what they needed for
their children to come school. This love flowed out of the Spirit of Jesus and our founder
Angela Merici.
In the past forty years we branched out into other dimensions of ministry as needs arose.
St. Angela Merici told us to pay attention to the signs of the times and embrace the changes
that are needed. Today, we aim to embody Gospel values as we serve those who are vulnerable
in our society. We live our lives focused on our primary relationship with Jesus, from
which our desire to be in service to God’s people flows.
Countless former students write to us, especially to the older sisters. They receive phone calls
and visits. Many visit our website to find the whereabouts of a sister who made an impact on
their lives. We are thankful to God for this connection, this blessing that we are remembered
because we know God’s spirit lives in you as you carry us forward by remembering and saying
“Thanks.” This is one of the greatest gifts one can acquire, to feel and express gratitude.
As our dedicated friends you have helped us become who we were in the past, you are with
us now in the present and through your generosity you help create our future.
“I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.” (Ephesians 1:16)
In gratitude,
Sr. Mairead M. Barrett
Our Vision Statement
We the Ursuline Sisters and Associates of Tildonk are dedicated to radical Gospel living.
Energized by the spirit and example of St. Angela we dare to effect change in ourselves, our
Church, and our society by standing with the oppressed economically poor, especially
women and children.
We use feminist models to confront
oppressive structures, racism, classism and
other prejudicial fears. We use our common
resources to empower the poor and
minister for justice. We network to expand
our political awareness and influence.
We arrive at decisions through a discernment
process, listening to the Spirit speaking
in the individual and in the group.
Our life styles are marked by profound
simplicity and consciousness of the earth.
We acknowledge our global interdependence.
We gather together to affirm and support one another. We empower each other to
accountability and challenge each other to act. We break open the Word together, share
prayer, share a meal and enjoy one another’s company.
We are people of wisdom. We relate with freedom and responsibility and are present to each
other in our brokenness.
We communicate with each other in an atmosphere of trust, honesty, and mutual support.
Our dialogue is permeated by an attitude of openness and a belief in continual conversion.
“We dedicate ourselves to a responsible and just use of
material goods to further Christ’s mission. We also
assume co-responsibility for the stewardship
of our common resources.”
Our Compelling Direction 2006-2010
The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk assemble every three years for Chapter. The purpose of the
Chapter meeting is to reflect on their own lives and discern the needs of the people of God
with whom they minister. From this a direction and vision emerges as to how we can “effect
change in ourselves, our church and our society.”
We desire to live out our prophetic call and use our collective voice in the spirit of Angela
and the Gospel of Jesus while integrating our action with our own individual and communal
lives (including investment policy, education/literacy of the members, and movement toward
openness to other cultures and traditions).
The resources we will draw on as we continue in this direction include our many years of
focused effort, the experience of individual sisters, our NGO status, the UN Millennium
Development Goals and other resources and networking as needed.
The particular focus this direction will take in
2006-2010 is on the problem of violence. We
will emphasize specific faces of violence to
address in annual Provincial and individual
goals with a commitment to on-going learning
on an individual and communal level and
to a deepened understanding and practice of
non-violence.
Specific faces of violence we will emphasize
in our learning and action may include:
• Violence to the earth (water, global warming)
• The war in Iraq
• Trafficking of women and children
• Homelessness
• Illiteracy
• Racism
Sisters in Retirement
The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk Retirement Fund is essential to providing support to our
retired sisters. Forty of our sisters are retired from funded ministries, living in seven locations.
Most reside at the St. Ursula Center in Blue Point where we have a full nursing staff
including around-the-clock nurses aides and a nurse on staff from 7am - 7pm daily. We also
have a full complement staff of cooks, maintenance and supervision. Three sisters who are
in need of more advanced care, live at Maria Regina Assisted Living facility.
Our philosophy of retirement is to allow
sisters to be where they feel best needed and
at home. Some sisters choose to stay where
they have lived and worked. Many of those
live at their home parishes, St. William’s
the Abbot, Seaford; St. Margaret’s, Middle
Village; Nativity BVM, Ozone Park; and
Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach. They
remain active in a variety of volunteer
ministries.
With the majority of members over the age
St. Ursula Center in Blue Point.
of 70 we have found that the support of our
active members is inadequate to provide for the care and living expenses of our older members.
And this is with many of our active members working into their eighties, in such ministries
as Fordham University, Divine Mercy Academy (formerly Nativity BVM) in Ozone
Park, and Our Lady of Hope in Middle Village.
Our other sources of income are also insufficient. Benefits from social security are a third of
what the average U.S. beneficiary receives and averages just under $5,000 per year.
Sr. Josephine and Sr. Paula on outing with Helen.
5 Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk
The costs to support our retired sisters
are immense expenses. These cost include
healthcare, medical supplies, nursing staff,
equipment, transportation, food, utilities,
property maintenance and upkeep. This
is why the Retirement Fund is so essential to
the support of our members. We are
extremely grateful for your support of this
fund. Our donor support has assisted in the
cost of living and care expenses.
Sisters in Retirement
Ursuline Sisters may retire but their journeys continue. They still minister to others through
a ministry of prayer, volunteer services and being present to each other in the community.
International
More Than One Year Later
“Be Angela” was the theme of our General Chapter in August 2008, and it continues to
inspire all of the Ursulines of Tildonk around the world. During that meeting of Delegates
from all parts of our Congregation, we wrote a statement which focuses on our living of
Spirituality, Leadership, Mission and Finances for these six years. We are striving to reflect
on this statement to see how we might better live the charism of our Founders, St. Angela
Merici and Father John Lambertz.
We said, in part, “We desire deep union with God. We are craftswomen of peace. We are
leaders. We use our resources to assist those who are in need. We dare to effect change. We
recognize our international solidarity and our desire that the mission of the Ursuline Sisters
of Tildonk expand throughout the globe.”
We long to believe that if St. Angela or
Father John were to walk among us today,
they would recognize us as their daughters,
as women who try to live in our times as they
did in theirs, with simplicity, in an ever
deepening relationship with God, and as
companions of the poor.
The Ursulines of Tildonk are responding to needs around the world. Our sisters are in
Guyana, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Canada, Belgium and here in the United
States. We try to assist each other as we minister in a variety of ways and to remain united
even with our great diversity.
We have set ourselves some goals until we gather again at our next General Chapter in 2014.
We pray to St. Angela Merici and to Father John Lambertz to be with us as we try to follow
their example. May we “Be Angela” with courage and wisdom and grace! May we be all we
say we want to be!
