Laundry Museum to be cleaned out
The entire contents of the Laundry & Mangle Museum
Archive are going up for sale (see advert on p.47). It
includes some 300 postcards and all kinds of ephemera
covering the history of washing and laundry. The Archive
holds a huge collection of information and memorabilia
related to the laundry business and its allied trades and
industries, as well as its exponents. In the 1980s and
1990s a number of well-known TV social historians and
authors used the Museum facilities to research books
and programmes. The L & MM archive also engaged as
an advisory service to customers of washing machine
manufacturers Hoover and Hotpoint. The Museum provided
props or even complete sets for television and
films, and its collection of humorous laundry-related
postcards have featured in numerous magazine articles.
The owner, Faith Hines, is a social historian and former
model, best known as the lady in the ‘Avon calling’ commercials,
and at one time was the ‘Queen of Soap’
adverts, spring-cleaning the house with Flash or managing
the week’s washing with Bluinite Tide. She also
washed her face in Palmolive and featured in TV commercials
for Green Shield stamps, tea, coffee and milk.
While the memorabilia is for sale, Faith will be happy to
add as a bonus all the information contained in the
Archive. Ring her on 01787-310624 for more details and
an information pack.
