Dear Reader, Letter from the McNair Scholars Program Director The McNair Scholars Journal is the culmination of intensive research conducted by our student scholars and their faculty mentors through our Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program. It is my pleasure to present Volume I, Fall 2009 which highlights the hard work of Cohort 1: 2007-08. The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to prepare highly talented undergraduates from first generation, low income backgrounds and students who are underrepresented in doctoral programs to pursue doctoral degrees. Long term, the goal is to increase the number individuals from the target groups teaching in colleges and universities. The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program provides an opportunity for students and faculty to apply much of what is learned within the classroom by engaging outside the classroom in research activities in a particular area of scholarly interest. These research activities provide a journey through the challenges and affirmations of scholarly work and better prepare students for graduate study and the pursuit of a doctoral degree. A significant component of the McNair Scholars Program at the University of St. Thomas is an individual, mentored research experience for each scholar. In addition to these papers, many of the scholars have presented their work at conferences and symposia throughout the country. We are justifiably proud of each McNair scholar whose research is presented in this journal. You will find that the papers cover a broad range of academic topics that the scholars have pursued using methodologies appropriate to their fields of study. However, the papers share a common theme in the way they exemplify the hard work, creativity, and dedication that each McNair scholar brings to the pursuit of his or her goals. Lawrence T. Our McNair participants are encouraged to become the scholars of tomorrow through research-training, early academic experiences, and constant interaction with our dedicated faculty. This structured research program has been essential in encouraging and retaining underrepresented students, and has created a pipeline toward doctoral studies. Our students have soared during their McNair experience. This publication is the culmination of their experiences. Our participants have completed original research projects and presented works at national conferences; they have also entered graduate programs at prestigious institutions across the country.
