Welcome to the Rochford District summer holiday activity programme for children, families and teens. The programme is put together by Rochford District Council in partnership with Virgin Active and Rochford Extended Services. It includes a wide selection of arts, sports and leisure activities for all ages and in venues across the Rochford District. Rochford Leisure Card holders are entitled to discounted prices on some Rochford District Council and Virgin Active activities. Refer to activity table for prices. Leisure Cards can be purchased at Rayleigh or Clements Hall Leisure Centres. 4 Rochford District Council The Leisure Team at Rochford District Council offer a range of Arts and Sports activities to take part in each holiday. Turn to pages 8-14 for all dates, venues and prices. All the Bells At 8:12am on 27 July 2012, thousands of people across the UK will join together to ring in the first day of the London 2012 Olympics. Up and down the country, bells will be rung as quickly and loudly as possible for 3 minutes. Join your local event on Bellingham Lane, outside the Rayleigh Windmill. Bring any type of bell, and ring it! Pond Dipping One of last summer's most popular activities is back in 2012. Children will be shown how to pond dip. Holding trays, hand lens and charts will help you identify the creatures you catch and you can even sketch the creatures as well. If you want to find out what lives in Rochford Reservoir then book quickly. Children must be accompanied by parents / guardians at all times (max 2 children to 1 adult). No toilets on site; public toilets in Back Lane. ALL activities must be prebooked unless otherwise stated. Summer Reading Challenge – Step into the Story Lab Get inspired by Essex Libraries' Summer Reading Challenge and step into the Story Lab for an imaginative adventure that knows no bounds! Join an art workshop and create items for the Story Lab – bronze clay coins, silver mirrors and gold medals. Joseph, Disney, Michael Jackson and One Direction workshops Mushroom Theatre Company will run three fun-packed, full-day sessions for budding performers, plus a week-long Joseph workshop and performance. Rhythms on the Rec with a Different Drum Listen out for a unique event in Great Wakering as 30 drums create a rhythmic experience for all to enjoy! Drop in to this free group-drumming workshop and join in the music-making fun. Knit Club Come along to this drop-in knit club where craft makers will pass on knitting and yarn craft skills to families and young people. Gruffalo Craft & Sew workshop Design and make your own Gruffalo inspired fabric book bag. A workshop for children and families. The above is just a selection of the activities on offer. 2-day Cricket Camp Rochford District Council Coaches from Rayleigh Cricket Club will be running their ever popular 2-day cricket camp. Come and try cricket for the first time in a fun and informal environment. Golf Fun sessions at Lords Golf & Country Club under their expert tuition. These sessions book up very quickly so book early to avoid disappointment. Fencing with Little Musketeers A fun, safe and educational environment for young children to learn fencing. Bright coloured foam and plastic equipment is used and visors are worn giving peace of mind and a genuine fencing experience. Children will learn the skills of fencing through games, exercises and competitions. They can also mimic their movie heroes, learn the art of stage combat and take part in a gladiator battle finale! Scuba Diving Experience with Dive Odyssea Join Dive Odyssea PADI 5 Star Centre on a Scuba Diving Experience. Take your first underwater breath in the warmth, clarity and safety of a swimming pool. Underwater fun and games. Snorkelling available for younger participants. Fun Club at Shopland Hall Equestrian Centre Fun Club is organised with beginners and inexperienced riders in mind. Have a fun morning by grooming and even washing your pony's tail ready for your ride. Enjoy paddling in the water jump when you are out on a pony ride! If it is raining then riding is in the indoor school. Learn about ponies whilst having fun in a safe environment with quiz’s and team games in a heated hall. Rochford Extended Services COACH TRIPS – places are limited and on a first come first served basis – please book asap and before 20 July 2012. Pick up for all coach trips: The King Edmund School (Oxford Road entrance – cars can be parked in the car park through the gates) at 8.30 am. Return times will vary but will be approx 6 pm at KES. When parking in school car parks, parking is at the owner’s risk and the school accepts no liability for loss or damage. No eating of hot food on coaches. Please remember to take all your rubbish with you. (1) Greenwich, London – Tuesday 24 July 2012 There are plenty of things to see and do in Greenwich. You can take a boat trip along the Thames (contact City Cruises), see the newly renovated Cutty Sark, the worlds most famous tea clipper which has re-opened following a £50 million renovation. There are stunning buildings that Greenwich is famous for e.g. the Queens House, National Maritime Museum which features interactive children’s galleries (these two attractions are free). There is also the Royal Observatory, Planetarium and the Prime Meridian Line to see. The park has a Pavilion Tea House, playground, boating pond and is also home to deer. The centre of Greenwich with shops and restaurants is close by. (2) Chatham Dockyard, Kent – Tuesday 31 July 2012 The Historic Dockyard, Chatham is a stunning 80 acre site with historic buildings, museum galleries, historic warships and a vibrant programme of events and activities which include: No.1 Smithery, The railway workshop (picnic & play), The Victorian Ropery, Steam, Steel & Submarines (The Royal Dockyard Story), Three Historic Warships, 3 slip The Big Space, RNLI Historic Lifeboat collection, Wooden Walls of England. There is also a shop and restaurant to explore. (Please note that tours of HM Submarine Ocelot and the Victorian Ropery are by time ticket which is not included in the price of this trip). (3) Colchester Zoo, Essex – Monday 6 August 2012 There are some new babies at Colchester Zoo – an aardvark, three red river hogs, a ring-tailed lemur and the first of the penguin chicks have started to arrive. There are also four new demoiselle cranes to join the collection, three radiated tortoises, rock hyrax and l’hoest monkey. You can feed the elephants and giraffes and see the primates, cats, dogs, sealions and penguins get fed. There are demonstrations of animal training and bird displays. You can take a ride on the Lost Madagascar Express train and explore the many play areas around the Zoo. There are picnic areas and restaurants if you wish to purchase food/refreshments. (4) Hever Castle, Kent – Friday 17 August 2012 The romantic double-moated 13th century castle was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and offers visitors of all ages a day out to remember. Experience 700 years of colourful history, glorious gardens, family attractions, jousting tournaments and special events plus award winning restaurants. Rochford Extended Services The gardens include an Italian garden, topiary chess set, English Rose garden, 38 acre lake and grottoes and fountains. There is an adventure playground for children, a water maze and a 100 year old yew maze. Boats are available for hire from the Edwardian boathouse. (5) Leeds Castle, Kent – Wednesday 22 August 2012 Listed in the Domesday Book as a Saxon manor, the castle has also been a Norman Stronghold, home to six of England’s medieval queens and a preferred residence of Henry VIII. The last private owner, Hon. Olive Lady Baillie set up the Leeds Castle Foundation in 1974. There are 500 acres of parkland, woodland walks and formal gardens including the quintessentially English Culpeper garden and the Mediterranean terraced Lady Baillie Garden with exotic and subtropical flowers and plants. Children can explore the yew maze and magical underground grotto of myths and legends. The Knights Realm playground (a wooden model of the castle) and aerial runway are great ways for them to let off steam! There is also a toddlers play area and turf maze. You can also take a Black Swan ferryboat across the Great Water from the castle drive to the maze and play area. Adventure Island Wrist Bands For all those over 1.2m – we have Big Wrist Bands for £11 each which must be purchased before 20 July through the Extended Services office. Nail Art – Ages 9+ This is a great opportunity for all you budding nail artists! Under the guidance of a qualified nail technician design your own nails using nail varnish, acrylics, gems and different techniques. Practice on a set of nails and then put into practice on each other. All materials will be supplied and nails can be taken home. Wacky Woods Walk – All ages A nature trail through Hockley Woods with Essex Wildlife Trust, looking at various topics including (but not limited to): animals/birds, plants, seeds, den building and arts & crafts. Lots of interesting things to see and games to play! Family Pottery - Ages 5+ A firm favourite! Have messy fun making models out of air drying clay under the guidance of our fantastic artist. You are only limited by your imagination! Family Cookery with Waitrose – Ages 5+ Under the expert supervision and guidance of Waitrose of Southend, come and learn how to cook a 2 course meal for a family of 4 using Waitrose finest ingredients which will be provided and you can take home. Spaces limited and a maximum of 2 children per adult. Price is per family not per person. Swimming Lessons, Rookie Lifeguard and RLSS Lifeguard (CH) Following the ASA and RLSS Award Schemes, our courses will help kids of all ages improve their strokes, learn new skills and gain confidence in the water. Trampolining (CH/RLC), Tramp o’Bounce(CH) Bound, bounce… boing! Learn to bounce safely and master the basic skills required in trampolining with bouncy castle at CH for Tramp o’ Bounce sessions. Climbing (CH) Come along and have a go at climbing under strict supervision and let us show you the ropes! No experience required. Rochford District celebrates in 2012 Saturday 30 June – Sunday 12 August This exhibition celebrates London 2012 and the Olympic Torch passing through Rayleigh and includes materials collected through Rochford’s Dreams and Memories Olympic archive project.
