2011 a n n u a l c o n f e r e n c e<br />

Royal Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Society<br />

The Royal Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Society was founded in 1890 to promote <strong>and</strong> foster the study of<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic science<br />

Today, the main objectives of the Society are:<br />

• To ensure that its scientific journals are regularly published, widely read <strong>and</strong> circulated,<br />

have high impact <strong>and</strong> attract an adequate supply of high-<str<strong>on</strong>g>quality</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>papers</str<strong>on</strong>g> from an<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al range of authors.<br />

• To organise an Annual C<strong>on</strong>ference, <strong>and</strong> to ensure that it provides an excellent forum<br />

for both general lectures <strong>and</strong> more specialised presentati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

• To provide younger members of the Society with adequate support to enable them<br />

to undertake <strong>and</strong> disseminate their research, attend c<strong>on</strong>ferences <strong>and</strong> workshops <strong>and</strong><br />

enhance their professi<strong>on</strong>al skills.<br />

• To enable those in schools to learn about ec<strong>on</strong>omics, particularly its applicati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> to<br />

foster the development of their own skills in ec<strong>on</strong>omic reas<strong>on</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

The Society provides financial support to individuals <strong>and</strong> academic bodies to assist in the<br />

progress <strong>and</strong> further study of ec<strong>on</strong>omics. Grants are provided to perform projects that c<strong>on</strong>form<br />

to the Society’s objectives <strong>and</strong> enable recipients to meet research expenses <strong>and</strong> the costs of<br />

attendance at c<strong>on</strong>ferences where they are presenting the results of their research.<br />

Details of the Council’s policies <strong>on</strong> awarding grants, fellowships <strong>and</strong> prizes are published <strong>on</strong> the<br />

Society’s website.<br />

In particular, the Society assists postgraduate students to attend the RES Annual C<strong>on</strong>ference,<br />

to present <strong>and</strong> discuss their research <strong>and</strong> provides annual <strong>on</strong>e-year fellowships for a number of<br />

third <strong>and</strong> fourth year students undertaking teaching <strong>and</strong> research.<br />
