CITIZENSHIP AWARD 4 DONALD GOOD, P.Eng., FEC Don Good, P.Eng., FEC, was appropriately named. Those who have had the privilege of working and volunteering with Mr. Good would tell you he is one of the ‘good guys’—a good-natured, widely admired traffic engineer who has devoted his career and much of his personal life to the betterment of his community. Co-workers Andrew Steeves, P.Eng., and Frank Flanagan, P.Eng., describe Mr. Good as a “committed and tireless worker” and an “effective leader”. The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce calls him an “exemplary community leader”. And Science East says that “once he commits himself to a project/task, you can count on him being there and making a positive contribution.” From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Good served on the Board of Directors for the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce followed by two years on its executive committee. THE PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER AND GEOSCIENTIST – February 2011 INGÉNIEUR ET GÉOSCIENTIFIQUE – février 2011 In 2003, he became president of the Chamber and championed numerous efforts including: • Sunday shopping • a bilingual services survey for Fredericton • a Travel Bank to bring Delta Airlines to the Fredericton “Ever since I started my career, it’s been my feeling that you have to give something to the community as well as to your profession and that’s what I’ve tried to do throughout my career.” The Citizenship Award is given to a professional engineer or geoscientist who, in the opinion of the Association, makes a significant contribution to improving the quality of life in his or her community. International Airport. • The Canada Airport Resolution • The Municipal Unconditional Grant During his time on the Board, Mr. Good also chaired the Chamber’s office space taskforce, the provincial government affairs committee, various awards selection committees and the tax review taskforce. Despite the considerable demands on his spare time, Mr. Good was able to record perfect attendance at every board meeting throughout most, if not all, six years of service to the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce. (He also assumed his presidential duties four months earlier than expected resulting in a 16-month term of office rather than the standard 12 months.) In 2006, the Science East Association recruited Mr. Good to serve on its Board of Directors. The not-for-profit association teaches the basics of science through entertaining hands-on experiences and exhibits. Mr. Good has chaired the organization’s governance and building committees and in 2009, he was appointed president and continues to enthusiastically advance the Science East mission. While volunteering at Science East, Mr. Good lent his fundraising expertise to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). He served as chair of the Fredericton Visions Committee in 2007 and 2008. The Visions campaign is one of CNIB’s major fundraisers. Not only was Mr. Good able to achieve ambitious donation targets, he motivated his fellow volunteers and ensured event logistics were smoothly managed. The United Way and the Labatt 24-Hour Relay were also beneficiaries of Mr. Good’s volunteer spirit. He assisted several of the United Way’s fundraising campaigns and served three years as a member of the Labatt 24-Hour Relay committee that raised funds for the Chalmers Hospital Foundation. In 1995, Mr. Good chaired the committee for Labatt 24-Hour Relay which exceeded its fundraising goal. For many years, Mr. Good was a coach with the Fredericton Minor Hockey Association and the Fredericton District Soccer Association helping young athletes to learn new skills and enjoy sports at a competitive level. A Life Member of APEGNB, Don Good has devoted a considerable amount of his time volunteering for a number of different professional organizations. For nearly the entire duration of his professional career, Mr. Good has volunteered at either the Branch or provincial level of Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick. Prior to 1985, he held the Fredericton Branch positions of
councillor, secretary, treasurer, vice-chair, chair and past chair. In 1985, he joined the Association’s Admissions Committee as a member. The following year he became its chair. He has also been a member of the Annual Meeting, Discipline, Lay Councillor Appointment, Long Range Plan, and Nominating Committees. He is currently a member of the Professional Conduct Committee and has been since 2001. In addition to having chaired the Admissions Committee, Mr. Good has also chaired the following APEGNB committees: • Awards (1993) • Brief & Government Liaison (co-chair 1990) • Nominating (1993) • Office Accommodation (1993) • Professional Conduct (1995-2000) In 1985, Mr. Good was elected to APEGNB’s (then APENB) provincial Council representing the Fredericton District. He was elected second vice-president of the Association in 1990 and then first vice-president in 1991. Mr. Good became president of APEGNB in 1992 and assumed the role of past president in 1993—the same year he was co-chair of the Canadian Transportation Research Forum (CTRF) National Conference. He also served on the CTRF’s Council from 1995 to 1997. In 2004, he was a member of the organizing committee for the 2004 Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers National Conference which was held in Moncton. Engineers Canada recognized Mr. Good’s long-standing service to the engineering profession by awarding him a Fellowship in 2008. In 2010, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce presented him with their Distinguished Citizen Award for his significant contributions to the capital city. He was honoured for his efforts to make city streets and walkways safer and commended by Mayor Brad Woodside for his “strength of character” and leadership skills. Mr. Good served as a board member for the ADI Group of Companies in 2006 and 2007. In recognition of his community leadership and ongoing commitment to his profession and local charities, APEGNB is proud to honour Mr. Donald Good, P.Eng., FEC, with an APEGNB Citizenship Award.
