Metal Work is an Italian company specialising in 

the production of pneumatic components for 

automation systems. Formed in 1967, Metal 

Work started as a small workshop manufacturing 

compressed air push-in couplings. Since then the 

company has gradually extended it's structure and 

production range to became a market leader in the 

pneumatic sector for automation systems. The 

factory in Concesio, Brescia now employs a staff of 

280 and the domestic and worldwide sales 

network has a further 296 employees. In 1992 Metal Work obtained the ISO 9001 

certification from the Swiss certifying body SQS (cert. No. 10645-02), which was 

integrated by the same certification from the German body DEKRA (cert. No. 

17-1295-532) in 1995. Products are distributed and serviced by 35 branches in 

Italy and abroad, which guarantees expertise 

and efficiency together with a comprehensive 

"before and after" sales service. Product quality 

and efficient organisation are the firm basis on 

which Metal Work stands today. These qualities 

have put the company in a position to anticipate 

market needs and satisfy the most demanding 

requirements in pneumatic automation.

Globalisation : risks and opportunities

We have all heard a lot of talk recently about the global 

market. Globalisation has become a household word that 

attempts to define clearly something that for many 

people is far from clear. The big multinational groups 

some time ago started to contend with a reality that has 

profoundly changed in recent years due to the advent of 

new communications technology and also the cultural 

and physical removal of many barriers and frontiers. But 

while it is compulsory and almost natural for industrial 

giants to compete with everyone and everything on a 

global scale, things are quite different for a 

medium-sized company. Those in a position of 

responsibility cannot fail to doubt whether the entire 

company structure is able to meet the new demands that 

the market is suddenly making very forcefully. The main 

difference between today and the past it that once companies hoped to find their 

own niche by concentrating - say - on the domestic market. In the present 

situation such a strategy is unthinkable since cheap, high-speed communications 

allow people the world over to discuss matters and find solutions in a very short 

space of time. Also, manufacturers enter the global market in search of spaces to 

occupy, which requires guaranteed availability of materials everywhere. These 

factors are forcing companies – small ones included - to expand considerably or 

risk disappearing altogether. We are now witnessing the first result of such a 

situation – an increase in the number of contestants in the race. And the constant 

quest for lower costs is shifting a fair part of production to the so-called emerging 

countries. So competition is taking on a global meaning. What is to be done then? 

No one can presume to answer all these questions, which are occupying scholars 

experts all over the world. But the situation must be duly acknowledged by all the 

companies and major new strategies implemented. Metal Work has considering 

the matter for some time now and has tried to provide an answer by focusing 

activity on certain key concepts: When we talk about quality we now have to refer 

to positive qualities, taking it for granted that negative qualities 

(non-conformities) have been resolved. (A company that does not produce quality 

is destined to succumb rapidly.) Innovation can not involve the product alone, 

more importantly it must concern process control and internal organisation - 

taking great care to pick up anything new on the market. Brains are indispensable 

at all company levels, where continuous improvement is the main aim of a 

company. Which is why personal involvement and motivation are fundamental 

factors in growth and development. Again taking the market as a point of 

reference, competitiveness can be achieved first and foremost by trying to 

eliminate everything that is not productive or - worse still – is a waste of 

resources and hence an increase in costs for the company. We are, of course, 

aware that the threshold of risk has risen and is bound to rise still further; 

continuing to be competitive means finding the right answers to new 

questions.Faced with such complex scenarios, it is easy to fall into catastrophism. 

But this is often seeking an excuse for not making a self-analysis or accepting 

challenges. We are ready, optimistic and determined. The motto ‘small is 

beautiful’ is probably no longer apt. The Metal Work group is in fact thinking big.

GRIPPERS WITH TWO PARALLEL JAWS 

Serie P5 

This is a new gripper that can be integrated with the 

Tecno rotary actuator and slide. Virtually all the 

component parts are made of technopolymer to 

make the device lighter. The graph (see fig. 2.1.0) 

shows the clamping forces and strokes for parallel 

grippers. 

Serie P2 

This is a gripper with rollers recirculation jaw guides. 

Starting from very small sizes – minimum thickness 

10 mm. Larger sizes have a system for taking up jaw 

guide play. Double action with internal or external 

clamping. Comes with magnet and sensor slot, 

except for size 06. 

Serie P3 

High-precision sturdy gripper guaranteed for 

1,500,000 cycles with max load without 

maintenance. Top quality materials, accurately 

worked: body made of highly-resistant hardened 

aluminium alloy body. Moving parts made of 

hardened and tempered steel. Double action with 

internal or external clamping. Magnets for position 

sensors, except for size 50 that can take induction

Serie P5 

This is a new gripper that can be integrated with the 

Tecno rotary actuator and slide. Virtually all the 


make the device lighter. The graph (see fig. 2.1.0) 

shows the clamping forces and strokes for parallel 

grippers. 

Special: On specific request we can supply other 

types of parallel grippers or optionals, such as:

GRIPPERS WITH TWO HINGED JAWS 

Serie P6 

These are premium quality double-acting grippers 

with 30° opening angle, designed for application of a 

magnetic sensor. The pistons and fingers are made 

of specially ground hardened and tempered steel 

enabling them to operate over 10 million cycles. The 

direct arm opening mechanism, which is toggleless, 

allows high-speed operation. The seals are housed in 

the body and slide along the tempered steel piston 

rod without suffering wear. The materials used and 

the heat and chemical treatments applied means that 

the parts subject to stress are extra-resistant. See

and drawing. 

Series P7 

This is a double-acting gripper with an excellent 

quality-to-price ratio. Designed for application of a 

retracting magnetic sensor. The body is in a single 

piece. Simplified jaw replacement method. 

Serie P8 

Single-acting normally open grippers. Virtually all the 


make the device lighter. The smallest version is 

really tiny – it weighs a mere 36 g.

Serie P9 

These are double-acting grippers with 160° opening 

angle, designed for application of a magnetic sensor. 

The pistons and fingers are made of specially ground 

hardened and tempered steel enabling them to 

operate over 10 million cycles. The direct arm 

opening mechanism, which is toggleless, allows 

high-speed operation. The seals are housed in the 

body and slide along the tempered steel piston rod 

without suffering wear. The opening stroke can be

Serie P10 

Grippers with 20°-180° adjustable opening designing 

for gripping the part from the outside. The toggle 

system allows high clamping forces. There is also a 

version with springs for extra safety during pressure

about 1°. Top quality materials and accurate 

working. Highly resistant hardened aluminium alloy 

body. Moving parts made of tempered steel.

TYPES 

Rotary actuators come in the following types in terms of position: - two positions, fixed or adjustable - three 

positions, fixed or adjustable Rotation is alternating in all the types shown in this catalogue. There also exist 

rotary actuators that always rotate in the same direction, with 4, 6, or more positions. 

Rotary actuator with single rack 

A pinion is keyed onto the rotating part and is rotated by means of a rack. The rack is driven by two 

pneumatic pistons, one on either side. As there is no play take-up system, it is not suitable for applications 

requiring accurate positioning. But there is a version with outer adjustable mechanical stops that stop the 

rotating part and also take up play. 

Rotary actuator with double rack 

The pinion keyed onto the rotating element is turned by two opposing racks, each driven by a pneumatic 

piston. The system has automatic play take-up, which means it is suitable for applications requiring accurate 

positioning. The parallelepiped shape of the design makes them ideal for use on mechanical arms. 

Blade-type rotary actuator 

The rotating element is connected to one or two blades inside a cylindrical chamber. The air pressure on one 

of the sides of the blade rotates the element. These are compact, cylindrical actuators designed for 

manipulation where particularly accuracy and high loads are not required. 

Chain-type rotary actuator 

A chain that is stretched at either end by a pneumatic piston winds round and rotates a pinion. This type of 

actuator is not included in our catalogue. 

INFO 

The use of hydraulic decelerators means it is possible to increase absorbed power. Some models in the 

catalogue have built-in decelerators. For those without, the user can mount decelerators outside the 

actuator. With horizontal axis rotation, if the masses are distributed asymmetrically it may be difficult to 

keep a constant rotation speed using flow regulators only. In this case it is advisable to use a decelerator.

Series R1 

These are rotary actuators with a single rack driven 

by cylinders inside extruded jackets similar to ISO 

6431 cylinders. The range includes thrust cylinders 

with 32 - 100 mm bore. There is a fixed stroke 

version and one with a mechanically adjustable 

stroke. Strokes available: 90°, 180°, 270° and 360°. 

Magnets for standard sensors. The rotating part ends 

in a shaft or a hole with a spanner slot. This type 

feature a plain yet sturdy construction and is 

relatively inexpensive. See Metal Work catalogue 

pages 1/57 to 1/59. 

SerieR2 

These are actuators with a double rack and play 

take-up, and have a shaft with a spanner slot. 

Strokes 90° and 180° . Stroke adjustment using 

screws. Pneumatic end-of-stroke cushioning. 

Magnets for position sensors. Compact and 

inexpensive. The smallest size measures a mere 46 x 

65 x 28 mm.

Serie R3 

These are actuators with a double rack, play take-up 

and flange. Strokes available regulation from 0° to 

180°. Versions with a mechanical stop or hydraulic 

end-of-stroke cushioning. Magnets for position 

sensors. There is a hole in the flange for air pipes or 

wires. 

Serie R4 

These are actuators with a single rack, external 

mechanical stops for stroke adjustment and play 

take-up. There is a large rectangular turntable with a 

central hole for air pipes or wires. Mechanical stop 

with + 5° fine adjustment. Strokes available: 90° 

and 180°. Magnets for retracting sensors. Top quality 

materials and accurate working. The body is made of 

highly-resistant hardened aluminium alloy and the 

moving parts hardened and tempered steel. 

2,000,000 cycles without requiring maintenance. 

There is also a special version with a rotary 

distributor and four compressed air ports inside the 

pinion. 

Serie R5 – TECNO 

This is new rotary actuator with a double rack and 

play take-up that goes with the TECNO gripper and 

slide. Almost all the component parts are made of 

technopolymer to make the actuator extra light. 

There is a central hole for air pipes or wires. Strokes 

available: regulation from 0° to 180°. Fine 

adjustment + 2°. Hydraulic end-of-stroke cushioning.

The range of guide units and slides is very extensive. Guides are grouped into families.

Guide units to couple with standard cylinders These are separate units to which an ISO 6432 or ISO 

6431 cylinder is attached. 

Pneumatic single piston cylinders with supports at the end of the piston rod. 

The common factor in all the various configurations is that, as well the calibrated hole for the piston in the 

cylinder body or front head, there are other slots housing bushes or guide bearings for additional piston 

rods. 

Guides with pneumatic actuator 

The main part of this actuators is the guiding section which determines the shape, applications, loads, 

maximum strokes and cost. The pneumatic part is housed in one of the bodies of the unit or it comes as a 

complete cylinder housed inside the guide. 

Twin pneumatic cylinder 

The jacket has two calibrated holes for housing two pistons and rods side by side. There are versions with a 

single piston rod, through piston rod and different power supplies depending on whether you wish to fix the 

jacket or the flanges to the ends of the piston rod. 

Rodless cylinders 

In these cylinders the piston rod is integral with a carriage on the outside of the jacket, so there is no piston 

rod. We offer versions in which the jacket is open, with a C-shaped section, and piston and carriage linked 

mechanically. There are other versions – that we do not make - in which the jacket is closed and there is no 

contact with the piston which is moved by magnetic force. 

GUIDE UNITS TO COUPLE WITH STANDARD CYLINDERS 

Series S1 

GDS, GDH and GDM for ISO 6432 minicylinders and 

ISO 6431 cylinders. The GDS series, which has a 

C-shaped body, is for lesser loads. Series GDH and 

GDM have an H-shaped body. GDH guide units guide 

piston rod with ball re-circulation bushes and are 

more suitable for high speed. There guides for 

minicylinders with bores 12-25 mm (see Metal Work 

catalogue pages 1/08 to 1/10) and guides for 

cylinders with bore 32-100 mm (see Metal Work 

catalogue pages 1/40 to 1/43). 

CYLINDERS WITH PISTON ROD SUPPORT SYSTEM

Series S3 

Twin-rod cylinders These are cylinders with axial 

movement and ISO 6431 ports. Bores available • 32 

–100. See Metal Work catalogue pages 1/50 to 1/56. 

Series S4 

Compact anti-rotation cylinders These are similar in 

design to the short-stroke anti-rotation cylinders. 

They are slightly sturdier since the guide rod 

diameter is greater in some sizes and the top plate is 

fixed on better. There are bores Ø 12 –100 with 

dimensions to UNITOP NFE 49-004 1 and, and bores 

Ø 32-100 with fixing dimensions as for ISO 6431 

cylinders. See Metal Work News catalogue. 

Series S5 

TECNO guide This is a new guide unit to go with the 

TECNO gripper and rotary actuator. Almost all the 


make the actuator extra light. There are three 

treated aluminium guide columns plus a fourth one 

holding a magnet. The magnet sensors are the 

retracting type. Hydraulic end-of-stroke decelerators. 

1,500,000 cycles without requiring maintenance. At 

present we make the guide Ø 25, stroke 60 mm See 

chapter 4 - TECNO. 

Series S6 

Compact guided cylinders These cylinders have a 

high load capacity exceeding that of short-stroke 

anti-rotation cylinders and compact anti-rotation 

cylinders. All come complete with magnets for 

magnetic sensors. Bores available Ø 16-100. See 

Metal Work News catalogue pages 1/21 to 1/24.


TWIN PNEUMATIC CYLINDER 


Series S7 

Heavy-duty guides These are used with long strokes. 

The slide is guided by ball re-circulation shoes that 

run on hardened and tempered steel rods fixed all 

along an aluminium frame, which houses the 

pneumatic cylinder. The size available can take a Ø 

32 ISO 6431 cylinder or a Ø 25 rodless cylinder. At 

the end of the stroke there are counter-blocks with a 

finely adjustable mechanical stop, hydraulic 

decelerator and proximity sensor. Optionals: 

● Safety buffer 

● Intermediate sensors 

● Pneumatically-operated intermediate stops 

● Interface plates 

The guides can also house cog belt or ball screw 

systems, not described in this catalogue. 

Series S8 

Compact precision slide The slide is guides by ball 

re-circulation shoes that run on steel guides fixed 

directly onto the cylinder body. The slide runs along 

the side of the cylinder, which makes the assembly 

particularly compact and sturdy. A sensor magnet is 

provided. Slides with cylinder bores Ø 8-40. 

Optionals:

Series S9 

Precision slide The difference between this version 

and the S8 is the arrangement of the components. In 

the S8 the moving part has two sides for fixing, one 

at the front and one at the side; on the S9 it is only 

on one side. For the same stroke, the overall 

dimensions of the S9 are greater than those of the 

S8. There are three sizes, each with two cylinders, 

bores Ø 12, 16 and 20. Slots for magnet sensors. 

Hydraulic decelerators available on request. 

Series S10 

Twin cylinder The main feature of this cylinder is that 

it is extra flat. There are sensor slots and air ports in 

one side. Bores Ø 12-30. There are two models, with 

bronze bushes or with ball re-circulation bearings for 

high speeds.


RODLESS CYLINDER 


Series S11 

Twin cylinder guide unit The main feature of this 

guide unit is that it is extra flat. It is similar to the 

twin cylinder, but has through rods and two flanges 

at the ends. Bores Ø 12-30. Two hydraulic 

decelerators can be mounted optionally. There are 

two models, with bronze bushes or with ball 

re-circulation bearings for high speeds. 

Series S12 

Twin cylinder slide This is similar to the twin cylinder 

guide unit but here it is the central body that moves 

while the two end flanges are fixed. The air ports are 

at the ends of the piston rods. Two hydraulic 

decelerators can be mounted optionally. Bores Ø 

12-30. There are two models, with bronze bushes or 

with ball re-circulation bearings for high speeds. 

Series S13 

Standard rodless cylinder This is the most compact 

guide unit available. In all the above models the 

axial length is equal to a basic value plus double the 

stroke, but here it is equal to the basic value plus 

the stroke, so slightly less than half the length of 

the other models. The other two dimensions are the 

smallest, comparable only with the models in 

section 4.2. There are, however, limitations 

regarding radial loads and applicable moments.

Series S14 

Rodless twin cylinders These have twice the axial 

force of the standard cylinder. The radial load 

capacity and torque resistance are also much

Rodless cylinder with added steel guide For 

improved load capacity with respect to standard 

rodless cylinders, this version has a steel guide on

The TECNO system is a real novelty in the field of 

manipulation technology. TECNO is comprised of 

pneumatic clamping modules, a linear actuator and a 

rotary actuator. It is made almost entirely of 

technopolymer which reduces the load for the 

manipulation unit and allows higher speeds thanks to 

low moments of inertia. All the modules can be 

joined together as required, using the connecting 

elements with push-in fitting. To disassemble, merely 

insert the key provided and turn it 90° - jammed or 

damaged screws are now a thing of the past and, if 

necessary, all the units can be secured by means of 

threaded bushes in the interfaces. All the modules 

can be controlled by retracting magnetic sensors.

MULTIMACH 

Multimach is not just a valve, 

it is an electro-pneumatic 

distribution "island" - a single 

block ready for connection to 

power and air delivery pipes 

and a multi-pin cable. All the 

pneumatic connections are 

situated on one side with 

built-in push-in fittings. The 

user interface is located on 

the other side so that the 

fitter or servicer has 

everything within easy reach - 

manual controls, valve-on 

indicator lights, compressed 

air system diagram and valve 

identification plates. There 

are also four different 

positions for the electric 

connector. Multimach 

provides total flexibility in the 

application of valves: 1 to 24 

valves, power plates, drain for 

pipes of various sizes and 9or 

25-pin power connector. 

But the real novelty, patent 

pending, is the fact that 

valves with different flow 

rates can be mounted.

Three different valves can be mounted together, and one valve can be 

replaced with another having a different flow rate. This revolutionary 

concept enables the user to optimise spaces and costs and adapt the unit 

to different performance requirements. The ratio between the Multimach 

system's flow rates and sizes is unique - the best in terms of 

miniaturisation and efficiency.

A: using the reduced end plate 1 code 0227300300 supplied complete with bracket. 

B: using the end plate 1-11 code 0227300200 or end plate 1 code 0227300201 by means of a through 

screw. 

C: using the end plate 1-11 code 0227300200 or end plate 1 code 0227300201 via the end plate thread M4. 

D: using the end plate 1-11 code 0227300200, or end plate 1 reduced code 0227300300 or end plate 1 code 

0227300201 or 0227300300 for fixing on a DIN bar by means of the coupling bracket code 0227300600. 

The base can be easily removed from the bar without requiring any special tool.

the modular system the FRL units can be removed without disturbing the

Skilltronic 

Skilltronic is an electronically-controlled 

pressure regulator equipped with an 

8-bit microcontroller. The control signal 

can be analogic, digital via RS232 or 

digital from the keyboard. It is converted 

into a proportional pressure signal by 

means of solenoid valves. The regulator 

can be used alone within the indicated 

flow values, or in combination with a 

Skillair 300 or 400 pilot-operated 

pressure regulator (power stage). The 

advantages are: 

● Integration with analogic or digital 

control systems (PC, PLC, etc.).

Shut-off Valve Skillair 

The job of this valve is to make the circuit 

independent from the air supply. It is basically a 

three-way valve. In the closed position, it cuts 

off the air supply and discharges the downstream 

circuit at the same time, which is means it is 

particularly useful during servicing operations. 

The hand-operated version can be padlocked to 

lock the knob in a closed position so that it can 

only be opened by someone with the right key. 

An interlocked version is available for low 

pressure operation.

The job of the progressive starter is to feed air into 

the circuit gradually with controlled flow. It comes in 

two versions with solenoid or pneumatic actuation. 

Both control signals cause the valve to open, which 

allows the air controlled by the flow regulator to flow 

slowly towards the downstream circuit. In the APR, 

when the pressure in the downstream circuit reaches 

50%-60% of the upstream pressure, the valve opens 

the main inlet duct connecting it directly to the 

output duct. This supplies the circuit with the 

maximum pressure and flow rate available upstream. 

The time elapsing between starting and opening the 

valve can be adjusted via the built-in flow regulator. 

If it is necessary to relieve the downstream circuit 

quickly, merely operate the control valve which cuts 

off air flow in the pipe. This closes the valve and 

starts relieving the downstream circuit. The 

progressive starter acts both as an actuator 

positioner, which eliminates the risk of sudden kickback, and as a safety valve 

that relieves the circuit quickly when the remote control is operated.

The Newtronic is an 

electronically-controlled pressure 

regulator equipped with an 8-bit 

microcontroller. The control signal can 

be analogic, digital via RS232 or digital 

from the keyboard. It is converted into 

a proportional pressure signal by 

means of high-rate solenoid valves. 

The regulator can be used alone within 

the indicated flow values, or in 

combination with a New deal 1"-3/4" 

pilot-assisted pressure regulator 

(power stage). The advantages are:

RFL R 

This LINE-MOUNTED flow micro-regulator with built-in 

push-in fittings has the job to regulate the air supply and 

thus the speed in pneumatic actuators. Two versions are 

available: - type U (unidirectional) regulates the flow 

only in one of the two directions of air flow.

Miniature push-in fittings ensure 

excellent seal and gentle coupling and 

release. These items extend Metal 

Work range of push-in fittings. They are 

used also in a vacuum. The release 

bushing has (patented) screwdriver slots 

to facilitate release in applications not 

accessible to the fingers. Configurations 

RL21 and RL22 (elbow and tee) show a 

ring for fixing to the wall asymmetrically

The flow micro-regulator regulates the 

speed of the piston rod in the pneumatic 

cylinders. The configuration of 

micro-regulators type C (to mount on 

the cylinder inlet) and type V (to mount 

on the valve ports) gives full flow during 

supply and regulated flow during 

exhaust. With type B (bidirectional) both 

the supply and exhaust flow rates can be 

adjusted. The adjusting knobs on Metal 

Work MRF allows triple adjustment: 

manual operation on the milled section, 

screwdriver inserted in the relevant slot, and using a hex. spanner. The MRF ring 

can be orientated even when mounted.

A new point of view. 

The new classification of solenoid valvespost-MULTIMACH.

It has only taken a few years to entire reclassify solenoid 

valves. Up until a few years ago they were divided into 

two large families: in-line valves with pneumatic 

connections made directly on the valve body valves on a 

base with pneumatic connections on the base, single or 

series versions. Another family has recently been added. 

Valves grouped in so-called units, a sort of pneumatic 

distribution centre which considerably simplifies both 

pneumatic and electrical connections. Various sizes have 

been made for each of these three families and they are 

normally identified by references to the size of the 

connection (1/8 or 6/4 pipe), flow rates (300 Nl/min., 

800 Nl/min., etc,) and the type of base to which they are 

connected. Each size comes with different components – 

body, spool, gasket, solenoid, etc. – and different 

dimensions, which makes it very difficult to combine valves of different sizes in a 

single series. But pneumatic actuators (cylinders, etc.) with different bores and 

hence different consumptions are often used in automatic machines, each one 

being connected to a solenoid valve. In-line valves are used when there is a 

limited number of actuators or they are situated far apart. The existence of 

various actuator bores is no particular problem – it is sufficient to select the right 

valve for each actuator and insert the various valves where required without 

forming a series. Centralisation of pneumatic distribution is becoming more 

frequent and involves the need to group solenoid valves together. This can be 

done by using multiple or modular bases where valves can be stacked in line or 

on a base, which is rather complicated when building systems as the user has to 

do. The need for different capacities is solved here too by using two or more sizes 

of solenoid valve but, with the addition of elements called adapters which allows 

bases of different sizes to be connected together, it is necessary to position all 

valves of the same size next to each other, which sometimes makes the flow of 

pipes from the actuators very disorderly if not chaotic. The development of 

grouped valves, i.e. units, has meant simplifying the system since such systems 

were designed solely for grouping several solenoid valves in one series or another 

with centralised electrical and pneumatic connection. But units currently on the 

market come in different sizes, capacities and dimensions, and it is impossible to 

build a single series to supply all the different actuators in the system. The user 

must thus use units of different sizes or select a size which may be smaller or 

larger than the flow rate required. With the MULTIMACH system, Metal Work has 

created a new model of pneumatic distribution unit and a new family of valves at 

the same time, namely - multi-size valves with different flow rates but very 

similar dimensions so that a single series can be made. Valves with different 

capacities (150-400-800 Nl/min.) can be combined in Multimach systems to get a 

truly centralised distribution system for all pneumatic actuators in automatic 

machines. There is no need for a size adapter and it is not necessary to order 

units of different sizes or increase or reduce the size. Merely select the right valve 

with proportion to the actuator and fit them one next to the other in the best 

order to optimise actuator pipe flow. When designing the Multimach, Metal Work 

has taken a completely different route with respect to the past, not different sizes 

with specially designed components, but rather different sizes with the same 

components, making the necessary modification to vary the flow rate. We have 

always borne in mind the need to make a single series without affecting the 

layout of the various valves and the possibility of increasing or decreasing the 

number of solenoid valves without forcing the user to select units with more

Why does a Group like Metalwork need financial management? 

The background to the present organisational, 

administrative and financial structure of Metal Work is 

very similar to that of many other industrial groups. 

Over ten years ago there was only one accountary 

departement that handled accounting, with particular 

emphasis on taxation matters. Later, as the Group 

increased in size, it became necessary to include a 

Controller and extend to all member companies plans 

activities that defined aims and verified achievement of 

them. Lastly, the structure was further upgraded, 

particularly as far as financial aspects were concerned. 

Therefore, the answer to the question posed to me by 

my colleague Daniele Marconi, in the house organ is 

simple: because efficient financial management of the 

Group means having a competitive advantage. For Metal 

Work, handling finance – in the classic meaning of the word - means putting all 

the companies in the Group in a position to finance their own capital investments, 

whether fixed or working, correctly and efficiently. For a Group that invested as 

much as 50 billion lire between 1996 and 1998 and expects to invest the same 

again in the next 3-4 years, nothing must be left to chance, neither availability 

nor costs. So financial management cannot ignore the main objective, which is to 

minimise the cost of money. However, apart from an assessment of interest 

rates, which are the price to pay for the availability of financial resources, and the 

choice of types of funding, Metal Work today is moving towards more efficient, 

highly evolved systems connected with organisation, such as cash pooling for 

Italian companies to concentrate treasury in one company only. Again for Metal 

Work – a Group highly focused on technological innovation and heavy investment 

– financial management supports investment decisions by using differential 

analysis to assess the feasibility of projects through indicators such as VAN and 

TIR. We also have to associate with financial management the complex 

restructuring that has involved all the companies in the Group since last 

September, grouped in a single holding company with the clear intention to 

highlight the characteristic profitability of the Group’s core business and the 

permanent tendency to produce value for the shareholders. Last, but certainly not 

least, for us at Metal Work, managing the most critical aspect of finance means 

evaluating – and covering – risks connected with exchange and interest rates and 

also the base raw material used in production. It is clear today that financial 

markets relating to any activity are dominated by a volatile management that 

needs to be monitored and mastered. Caps, interest rate swaps, options and 

futures, namely everything that just a year back seemed to be a risk 

management tool for financial institutions and large industrial groups, have 

become fundamental means for managing risks and are in fairly widespread use. 

Lastly, allow me to say that an efficient financial management produces value.

The importance of technical training for the Metalwork sales 

force 

Customer satisfaction is the focal point of the entire 

Metal Work Group. The Group’s marked-oriented policy 

is based on a combination of factors including the 

technical training of each individual. The high-tech 

content of the new pneumatic product launched on the 

market in recent months lays on the negotiating tables 

new reasonings which, if used correctly, can provide 

support during negotiations. Up until a few years ago, 

selling focused on four main areas – products, price-list, 

discounts and the seller’s ability in communicating. And 

this continues to be the focal point of business dealings 

for certain pneumatic products and in certain sectors of 

industry. But today, a company like Metal Work that has 

chosen to offer high-tech superior quality products can 

no longer adopt this type of sales approach. This is 

because selling a product that costs less than others – irrespective of everything 

else (quality, innovation and technology) - may lead to success in the short term 

but not in the long term as the price is only one element of the product package. 

It is virtually impossible to re-establish dealings with a customer who is 

dissatisfied with technical performance or quality, whereas missing a consignment 

due to a purely sales hitch is just a temporary defeat and rarely jeopardises 

relations with that customer. In recent years technical training has been playing 

an increasingly important role. Metal Work now makes numerous ranges of 

products, which are alike in some ways yet differ greatly in others. Being able to 

analyse the customer’s technical and commercial requirements and knowing how 

to present a variety of solutions – though always leaving the final decision to the 

customer – leads to customer satisfaction and hence success. Remembering to 

leave the final decision to the customer is the thin line that bridges the enormous 

gap between the seller, or technical salesman, and the engineer. When faced with 

specific requirements, the engineer puts forward a solution, i.e. makes a choice; 

the salesman analyses the requirements and proposes various solutions, but 

always allows the customer to make the final choice. The difference lies in the 

moral satisfaction of the two figures – the engineer is pleased when his idea is 

accepted, the salesman when he tears off an order sheet. The technical training 

courses that Metal Work proposes to hold at the head office or various branches 

round the world will be an important meeting point where the sales force can 

learn all about the technical features and possible applications of the product and 

also about future developments. The courses will be the two-way type, where 

participants will be invited to express their ideas on new products or explain 

technical or commercial problems encountered with the customers. The resulting 

ideas will then be taken back to the company to enrich technical know how and 

provide input for research and development. It is fundamental for Metal Work to 

understand how the subject matters dealt with are received by the participants in 

relation to the business reality in which they operate. A product may be 

technically perfect but, if analysed in different technical and industrial contexts, it 

may be judged as anything from useless to indispensable. Many companies avoid 

this “labelling” by supplying endless ranges of products but all very similar, which 

often put even the best engineers in difficulty when consulting the catalogue. 

Thanks to direct dealings with the sales network, Metal Work has managed to 

market highly flexible products that can be adapted to a full range of industrial 

realities where pneumatics is present. Therefore, it is of vital importance for all 

Metal Work sales personnel to have a thorough knowledge of the technical 

possibilities of our products which – I assure you – are truly endless.

Certification of the group 

E n g l i s h 


The ISO 9001 certification project involving all the 

companies belonging to the Metal Work Group was 

successfully completed at the end of November last year. 

Starting three years ago with certification of the 

subsidiaries in France, Denmark and Sweden, the project 

finished with PS Mantua, with audits carried out by 

Dekra Certification Services in as many as 20 companies 

in Italy and 6 in Europe. Why such an extensive and 

highly committing project? Simply because, right from its 

first application, the ISO standard proved itself a valid 

model providing the inspiration to create and improve 

organisation within the individual companies in the 

Group. And interlinked management enabled compliance 

with the Quality System already in operation at MW since 

1992. The involvement and active participation of those 

in charge at each associated company, together with those at all other levels, 

made it possible for such a major project to succeed. All the functions involved 

provided active assistance, managing to reconcile this extra work with their 

already numerous daily tasks. ISO 9001 certification was made possible first and 

foremost thanks to the general conviction that all the effort required to improve 

our organisation and image would pay dividends in the end. The heads of all the 

companies were in total agreement with this approach, which made the 

certification procedure in all the associates short and sweet. And that’s not all. 

The adoption of the interlinked management Quality System, with extremely 

similar if not identical procedures and forms used, enabled us to find common 

organisational solutions – a significant step forward in the process of 

standardising fundamental processes. The year 2000 will see this great young 

‘group quality team’ involved in two different areas: extension of the Quality 

System with certification of the latest additions to the Group in parallel with work 

to sustain and improve the Quality System already in operation at 26 certified 

companies. Regular audits will be performed by the MW Quality Assurance Service 

and directly by Dekra Certification Services. The aim of these inspections is to 

highlight any weak points in the system and, more importantly, to propose the 

remedial action required. Particular attention will be paid to streamlining the 

system still further by reducing paperwork to improve efficiency - which has long 

been the keyword of the entire Group.
