The Marathon Show (hosted by Maniac #1817, Joe Taricani) was first broadcast in June 2010. It’s a one of a

kind show that spot lights the marathon and marathon runners. Maniacs have found a safe haven with this

great show. A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available to

download from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs to

marathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe gets

three marathoners together and does a round table discussion Elaine about Green many great topics. So if you have

already come across the show, please do.

Check it out and tune in! http://www.themarathonshow.com

NIAGARA FALLS MARATHON (10/24/11)

http://www.marathonmaniacs.com

by Marc Frommer (MM#9)

I haven't had time to write a report but since I'm 36000 feet up in the air somewhere between Toronto

and Houston (yes, I'm taking the direct route home to PDX) I thought I would get it down on "paper" and

send it out later. By the way, this is probably the emptiest flight I've been on in a long time, if not ever --

maybe 20 folks. Kind of odd but pretty comfy.

Gary Thompson

First, the race. The course is one of the faster ones I have run but my training has been horrible leading up to the race. I sprained

my ankle a few weeks ago, then got a cold, and finally my back started bothering me about a week before the race. Even before all

that, my training was inconsistent even for me. You can see the last few weeks were a bit ridiculous and the weeks before were

very up and down. However, before the ankle sprain and cold, I was feeling pretty good and was going to shoot for a PR on the

course, if the weather cooperated. The weather cooperated but there was no way I was going for a sub-3:20 given my training.

So, I decided to start at 5:00/Km, which happened to be what Lorne wanted to run as well.

We got up early Sunday morning to catch the bus to Buffalo, where the race started. We had to bring our passports to clear

customs at the border and, unfortunately, one of the participants from the Netherlands did not have proper documentation. They

took him off the bus and we had to sit and wait for him. It added more than 30 minutes to the trip and you could hear all the

hydrated runners squeezing their bladder muscles for dear life (maybe too much info). Finally, we arrived and made a bee line to

the porta potties. The starting area was at the Art Museum in Buffalo, which felt a little odd. I'm sure the staff were quite nervous

with runners walking among Monets, Van Goghs, etc but it turned out OK. It was nice to wait inside since it was a little cool but the

sun was shining brightly (luckily I did bring my sunscreen). The race started at 10AM and I decided to wear a SS shirt with arm

warmers (first time I ever wore them and they worked out great), throw away gloves/handwarmers (disappeared around mile 9 or

so after crossing over to the Canadian side). After a couple of National Anthems, we were off for around 4 miles of running in

Buffalo, over the Peace Bridge (the only real hill on the course), and then into Niagara Falls, Ontario. The course basically ran along

the Niagara River and is great. There was hardly any crowd support and no music or bands -- my kind of race. Just you, the

scenery, your thoughts, and peace -- it is the anti-Rock N Roll race. The aid stations were fine and the crew supportive.

Lorne and I got into a nice rhythm and were clicking off 8:00 miles until we

hit the Canadian side when I decided to record 5K splits to get into a

Canadian mind set (there were mile markers along the way). As you can

see below from my splits, I ran a very even race -- probably my most evenly

paced marathon. Lorne and I split up at an aid station around mile 18 and I

just continued on in my zone.

I did slow up slightly over the last 7K when I began to run out of a little gas

but not a major blowup. So, overall I'm very pleased with the result.

Well, my last marathon on October 9, 2011

was THE most memorable not only because

it was our first international 42K in Argentina

for the Maraton de Buenos Aires with my

Marathon Maniac boyfriend, Greg Gillespie

#2248, but we started the race as

boyfriend/girlfriend, and ended the race as

fiancés when he surprised me with a ring

and proposal at mile 21!! I said YES of

course!

October was a busy month! We had marathons from coast to coast with big races, small races

and everything in between. There were many races, I could have featured but I just ran out of

room.

November should prove to be a fun month. It starts with a HUGE bang with the New York City Marathon. I hope everyone doing it enjoys the race

and takes lots of photos for me. Later in the month is the Flying Monkey Marathon, which I hear so many good things about. Then over

Thanksgiving weekend is the Seattle Quadzilla. But there will also be the CAR Quadzilla in California and the Wright Quadzilla in Texas.

I hope to get lots of photos. I do my best to hunt down photos, but I also rely a lot on you guys to keep this newsletter packed!

R H E T O R I C A L R E V E L A T I O N S A N D W ( R I T E S ) …

F R O M T H E R A M B U N C T I O U S R E V

Hiya Prez!!!

Man, I miss you. This whole 3000-miles-apart friendship stuff just isn’t my first choice, young fellow, but it is

always like picking up from yesterday when I see you. Except you always look sooo much older... (oh, that’s a

good one).

Well, my friend, we may be in one club, this Marathon Maniacs, but boy do these folks have a range of skills, and exercise them in a

smorgasboard of settings, making me see how creative and complex are the variety of differences within the one club. Last place and first place

finishers, “mile 15 was a challenge” to “it isn’t tough till we get to mile 94 in some 135-mile ultra in the Deadlands,” some like it warm and

some like it cold, cities and country sides, deserts and ocean sides, jogging for fun or firing up all cylinders in fierce competition.

Brought home to me this month is the diversity of marathon experiences. To categorize two, look at the differences between “friendlies” and

“strangers” marathons.

This is wonderful stuff.

I hear in Washington particularly (and plenty of other places too, no doubt), Maniacs create good, official races that emerge as intimate runs for

groups of friends and friends-of-friends who hear about it, real marathons that are delightful events. Everybody knows everybody, or is within

single introductions of that. Perhaps twenty or thirty runners enter; maybe the race grows over time to a couple hundred. The courses are still

26.2, but usually not on city streets, given the complications of clearances, manning roadblocks, and the like. No police, no people with sponge

fingers pointing you in the right direction. A few spoken instructions at the start, and you’re off. Few volunteers are needed: sometimes the

whole shebang is a one-man show. Only one or two aid stations are needed, given the loops or out-and-back nature of the courses. Besides,

runners come prepared to be self-sufficient. If they forgot something they need, someone else shares for the asking. People are not racing

against each other so much as running with each other. Balloon-carrying pacers floated away, evidently. Frequently the same folks appear at

these. People may slow down to run a loop with an old friend just for conversation, and then resume their own pace again. Imagine having a

nice visit, in the middle of a run! Hmm. Lovely, tranquil, friendly marathon runs.

Shirts? Not likely. Medals? Often there are not any. Maybe the RD creates home-made ones. The big hoopla is reserved for the post-race food,

which may be the best ever. The race director or their spouse might cook: individually hand-wrapped brownies, like little presents with stickers

on the top, hot lentil soup, baked yams with brown sugar, or a big old pot of black bean soup, made-to-order chili, vegetarian hot dogs,

butternut squash soup, my my my. People bring leftovers from Christmas to the Last Chance New Year’s Eve marathon.

Prez? Those are pretty different experiences from one of my favorites: the Marine Corps Marathon, 26.2 with 23,000 strangers. It was crowded,

sure, and the logistics of getting to and from require some plotting and planning not often seen this side of James Bond. I’ve set my alarm to

a.m. times known only to owls. Wearing throwaway over-clothes to avoid accosting strangers for body warmth? Check! Clear running room is

nil most of the race, yes, partially Steve, because this year I decided not to run with the leaders. (Heh heh heh.) So the crowdedness brings

some downside differences, and travel complications are involved. On the other hand, to run past the Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson

Memorials and the U.S. Capitol; to meet Marines from all over the country and people from all over the world; to stand at a starting line when

hover craft fly over and Marines parachute in from the sky, something flavorful is added to the hoopla.

The two experiences are almost completely different, but they overlap at least in two ways. One, I bumped into a few Maniacs, in particular

the friendly senior runner Roger Macmillan of Canada, the tenacious Bob Dolphin, and the effervescent Diana “Slug” Robinson, who can take

lemons and make the fruitiest concoction out of any experience. And, thanks entirely to our identifying Maniac singlets, I have new maniac

buddies, the Happiness-is-all-in-the-attitude Floyd, and his hilarious heckling side-kick Lori, who, while laughing at 19, chided “get out of here

Rev or you won’t make the bridge!” (Work on this with the wise men, Prez. In Boston cute girls kiss me. In this club, cute girls heckle me.) And

two: they are both 26.2 miles, a challenge one way or another.

The varied creativity in renewing our lives, and the confidence through fitness, competition, and varied experiences you have inspired, Prez, is

far, far more than you three Gentlemen ever could have imagined. The old saw about how God either had an off day or a sense of humor when

creating the platypus, I think, can be clearly put to rest: God was just being infinitely creative. So, too, the world of the Maniacs: such

wonderful creativity and variety. Beautiful touches, too, everywhere you look. My fondest admiration and congratulations.
