New Centre for Higher Education, Equity and Access (CHEEA)
CHEEA is committed to policy and practice which
promotes equity, opportunity and achievement in
higher education. Its research investigates the roles of
culture, information, teaching quality and incentives in
participation and progress and members include:
Professor Anne-Marie Bathmaker, Dr Marion Bowl,
Professor Peter Davies (Director), Professor Stephen
Gorard, Lily Ilic, Dr Tian Qiu, and Dr Paul Warmington.
Currently the centre is conducting a major project for
the Nuffield Foundation on the way in which
secondary school students’ choice of sixth form
subjects is informed by their knowledge of differences
in the size of the ‘graduate premium’ between degree
subjects. Other current projects include: a review of
evidence for the Higher Education Academy on the
role of further education in HE participation and an EU
funded (Leonardo) partnership on financial literacy.

Race and Education (CRRE)
brings together wide-ranging
scholarship that adopts a critical
perspective on race equality
issues in contemporary
education, both in the UK and
internationally. Led by Professor
David Gillborn, with Associate
Directors Dr Nicola Rollock and
Dr Paul Warmington, the centre
will provide a supportive,
The centre is also working closely with the University of
Birmingham’s Outreach programme, led by Gail Rothnie
and her team in order to refine methods of data
collection and also through analysing data to evaluate
different streams of Outreach activity.
