New Centre for Higher <strong>Education</strong>, Equity and Access (CHEEA)<br />
CHEEA is committed to policy and practice which<br />
promotes equity, opportunity and achievement in<br />
higher education. Its research investigates the roles <strong>of</strong><br />
culture, information, teaching quality and incentives in<br />
participation and progress and members include:<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Anne-Marie Bathmaker, Dr Marion Bowl,<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Peter Davies (Director), Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen<br />
Gorard, Lily Ilic, Dr Tian Qiu, and Dr Paul Warmington.<br />
Currently the centre is conducting a major project for<br />
the Nuffield Foundation on the way in which<br />
secondary school students’ choice <strong>of</strong> sixth form<br />
subjects is informed by their knowledge <strong>of</strong> differences<br />
in the size <strong>of</strong> the ‘graduate premium’ between degree<br />
subjects. Other current projects include: a review <strong>of</strong><br />
evidence for the Higher <strong>Education</strong> Academy on the<br />
role <strong>of</strong> further education in HE participation and an EU<br />
funded (Leonardo) partnership on financial literacy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> new Centre for Research in<br />
Race and <strong>Education</strong> (CRRE)<br />
brings together wide-ranging<br />
scholarship that adopts a critical<br />
perspective on race equality<br />
issues in contemporary<br />
education, both in the UK and<br />
internationally. Led by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
David Gillborn, with Associate<br />
Directors Dr Nicola Rollock and<br />
Dr Paul Warmington, the centre<br />
will provide a supportive,<br />
<strong>The</strong> centre is also working closely with the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Birmingham</strong>’s Outreach programme, led by Gail Rothnie<br />
and her team in order to refine methods <strong>of</strong> data<br />
collection and also through analysing data to evaluate<br />
different streams <strong>of</strong> Outreach activity.<br />

environment for staff and students<br />
pursuing challenging research that<br />
questions accepted wisdom on race,<br />
education and social justice.<br />
Through its research, teaching and<br />
publication activities, the Centre will<br />
build and develop new and<br />
constructive relationships with<br />
those seeking to combat racism and<br />
advance equity locally, nationally<br />
and internationally.
