Daniel Patrick McKenna - London, England
My name is Daniel Patrick McKenna.
I went abroad in London last fall
semester. One of the highlights
of my experience was visiting my
roomate and fellow APO brother,
Thomas Justo in Madrid, Spain. We
thoroughly enjoyed tapas, nights
out, and great company. Live free
or die!

Hi, my name is Thomas Justo.
Most people call me TJ. I
was abroad in Madrid for last
fall semester. While I was
abroad, I went to visit Dan
McKenna, who was in London
as well. Nevertheless, being
in Espana was life changing.
I was lost in translation,
confused, surprised, excited, sad
(during bull fights), and felt so alive, all at the
same time. Overall, through my travels around
Europe, I discovered not only who I was but
also how great the United States of America is!
Hi, my name is Maddie Dockery.
Last semester I studied abroad
in London and it was one of the
most amazing experiences of my
life. I danced and competed with
the University of London Ballroom
and Latin Dancesport team,
and made tons of friends from
all around the world. I’m excited
to be back and can’t wait to
meet all of our new brothers. =)
Ivan Bakin- Istanbul, Turkey
Maddie Dockery- London, England
Hi, my name is Ivan Bakin.
Last semester I had the privilege
of studying abroad in Istanbul,
Turkey. Istanbul was
amazing as it is literally the
crossroad between Asia and
Europe, and it is reflected in
the feel of the city. I loved
walking around and would
spend around four hours a day just strolling
the city. The food is great, nightlife is awesome,
and the classes were super easy. Its okay to be
back, but at least I get to meet all the NIBs and
see everyone again.

Danielle Lawrence- South Africa
Hi, my name is Danielle Lawrence and I’m
a Senior, TRF major, from Silver Spring,
Maryland. This past fall semester, I studied
abroad in South Africa as apart of the Organization
for Tropical Studies program. It was
an amazing experience! I was able to get up
close to some of the most amazing wildlife
in the world! My career goal is to become
a wildlife videographer so this trip was a
once in a lifetime opportunity to get some
of the best footage and photos of my favorite
animals. From bats to octopuses, from cheetahs to elephants, I was able to
handle all sorts of captivating species. I can’t think of too many other places
where I would’ve had that chance.
I did have a few close calls with the wildlife though. Elephants may seem
tranquil and friendly, but don’t be fooled. I was riding in a safari truck with
some members from my group when a herd of elephants all of the sudden
charged after us! It’s cool to talk about now, but in that moment, if we
hadn’t driven away fast enough, the herd definitely could’ve and would’ve
knocked our truck over. At the end of a long hot day, we would often go
to Lake Panic for ‘sundowners,” a South African tradition where you grab
some drinks, and your good friends, to watch the sunset. Lake Panic was a
beautiful spot. But standing too close to the water was a huge risk. Hungary
and vicious hippos kept watch for anyone who dared to dip their feet in. We
lived and we learned.
All in all, my semester abroad was nothing short of spectacular. If given the
chance to do it again, I wouldn’t even have to think twice about it. I did miss
my brothers of Phi though, especially the loves of my life in H-E! And I’m
excited to continue sharing my stories with the nibs and our new pledges
throughout the semester!

Kristin Carbone- London, England
Hey Phi,
I’m Kristen! I was studying in London last semes-
ter, so for those of you who do not yet know me,
come introduce yourself! London was so much
fun and I experienced some great things! The
atmosphere is definitely different than Syracuse,
just ask anyone who’s studied there! Although
I may not be that happy to be back in Syracuse
considering I’ve lived here for almost twenty two
years, I can say I’m happy to be back to one of the
best things of my college career, Alpha Phi Omega!
I’m currently a senior majoring in Public Health
and minoring in Sociology. I pledged in Spring
2010 and am in Phalcons (Fly High)! My big is
Ashley Haskins, but she graduated last year. I also
have five lovely littles Vasavi Kanneganti, Lidia
Kamionka, Alicia Lewis, and this semester Aman-
da Audesse and Sierra Cruz
as well as one super awesome
grandlittle, Christina Fieni! I
look forward to spending my
last semester at Syracuse Uni-
versity with you all, it’s going
to fly by but I’ll be loving
every minute of it!

Hi!
My name is Lyndsay and I’m a
junior Advertising major from
Oceanside, New York. I pledged
Spring 2011, and last fall I was
abroad in London. It was absolutely
the best semester I’ve ever had, and
I encourage anyone who’s debating
going abroad to go through with it;
I can’t speak highly enough of the
SU Abroad program and experience. While I was there, I
camped outside for four days at Oktoberfest in Germany,
traipsed around southern Italy for a week eating the best
food I’ve ever tasted, saw the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum,
the I Amsterdam monument, La Sagrada Familia, plus all
that the UK had to offer. I’m a huge music fan, and getting
to see Jim Morrison’s grave in Paris and then all four
Beatles’ homes in Liverpool was an incredible experience.
London is a beautiful and diverse city with so much to offer,
and the rest of Europe is at your fingertips, just a cheap
train or plane ride away. I had an amazing four months,
but I’m happy to be back in the US and back at Syracuse. I
look forward to getting to know everyone who I haven’t met
yet. I’m under 5’0 tall so I’m not always easy to spot, but
feel free to come talk to me whenever!
