airberlin technik provides servicing<br />

to Emirates’ A380 in Munich<br />

With the first flight of the Emirates Airbus<br />

A380 from Dubai to Munich, airberlin technik<br />

exp<strong>and</strong>s its range of capability to include<br />

the double-deck aircraft. In future, the EASA<br />

Part 145 certified maintenance company will<br />

perform the transit check every day, while<br />

the aircraft is on the ground at the Bavarian<br />

capital city. At the Munich location, airberlin<br />

technik runs a hangar with 12,000 m² of<br />

floor area, with space for up to six narrowbody<br />

aircraft or three wide-body aircraft,<br />

along with employing 270 staff. airberlin<br />

technik already provides complete line maintenance<br />

to Emirates in Germany at Düsseldorf,<br />

Hamburg, Frankfurt <strong>and</strong> also Munich.<br />

This includes maintenance contracts for the<br />

aircraft types Airbus A330, A340, A380 <strong>and</strong><br />

also Boeing 777.<br />

Astronics acquires avionics interface<br />

solutions supplier Ballard Technology<br />

Astronics Corporation, a leader in advanced,<br />

high-performance lighting, electrical power<br />

<strong>and</strong> automated test systems for the global<br />

aerospace <strong>and</strong> defense industries, has acquired<br />

privately-held Ballard Technology, an<br />

Everett, WA company that designs <strong>and</strong><br />

produces avionics interface solutions for<br />

defense <strong>and</strong> commercial aerospace applications.<br />

Astronics acquired all of the stock<br />

of Ballard for $24m in cash. An additional<br />

purchase consideration of up to $5.5m may<br />

be paid by Astronics if Ballard achieves certain<br />

revenue growth targets over each of the<br />

next five years. Founded in 1986, Ballard is<br />

projecting 2011 annual revenue of approxi-<br />

mately $11.0m, achieving a compound annual<br />

growth rate during the previous three<br />

years of over 20%. Ballard’s databus products<br />

can be used anytime avionics systems<br />

on an aircraft are upgraded.<br />

Bombardier reports increased net income<br />

for 3rd quarter<br />

Bombardier reported its financial results for<br />

the third quarter ended October 31, 2011.<br />

Revenues increased to $4.6bn, compared to<br />

$4bn last fiscal year. Earnings before financing<br />

income, financing expense <strong>and</strong> income<br />

taxes (EBIT) totaled $301m, compared to<br />

$250m last fiscal year, while the EBIT margin<br />

reached 6.5%, compared to 6.3% last<br />

year. Net income amounted to $192m for<br />

the third quarter ended October 31, 2011,<br />

compared to $147m for the same period<br />

last fiscal year. Free cash flow (cash flows<br />

from operating activities less net additions<br />

to property, plant <strong>and</strong> equipment <strong>and</strong> intangible<br />

assets) usage totaled $346m for<br />

the third quarter, compared to a usage of<br />

$108m for the same period last fiscal year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cash position amounted to $2.7bn as<br />

at October 31, 2011, a level similar to last<br />

year, compared to $4.2bn as at January 31,<br />

2011. <strong>The</strong> overall backlog stood at a strong<br />

$55.3bn as at October 31, 2011, compared<br />

to $52.7bn as at January 31, 2011.<br />

AAR selected to extend airlift support for U.S. Military<br />

Boeing celebrated the opening of its new<br />

Interiors Fabrication facility in North Charleston.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Interiors Responsibility Center<br />

South Carolina team will manufacture 787<br />

interior parts including stowbins, closets,<br />

partitions, class dividers, floor-mounted<br />

stowbins used by flight attendants, overhead<br />

rests for flight-crews <strong>and</strong> flight attendants,<br />

video control stations <strong>and</strong> attendant<br />

modules for Boeing South Carolina. <strong>The</strong><br />

300,000 ft² facility includes state-of-the-art<br />

manufacturing equipment, <strong>and</strong> employees<br />

will use the latest Lean processes <strong>and</strong> tools<br />

to efficiently produce interior components<br />

to match 787 production rates at Boeing<br />

South Carolina.<br />

UOP, a Honeywell company, has been<br />

awarded a $1.1m contract from the Federal<br />

Aviation Administration (FAA) via the U.S.<br />

Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center<br />

to develop <strong>and</strong> demonstrate technology that<br />

will produce renewable jet fuel from alcohols<br />

found in natural feedstocks. Under the contract,<br />

Honeywell’s UOP will produce renewable<br />

jet fuel from a type of alcohol called<br />

isobutanol. Isobutanol, to be supplied for this<br />

project by advanced biofuel company Gevo,<br />

<strong>The</strong> United States Transportation Comm<strong>and</strong> (USTRANSCOM) exercised two renewal options<br />

for AAR to provide airlift support in Afghanistan through October of 2012. <strong>The</strong> first<br />

option has a value of $99m <strong>and</strong> is part of a task order awarded to AAR in October, 2010.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second option has a value of $51m <strong>and</strong> is part of a task order awarded to AAR in<br />

August, 2011. <strong>The</strong> Company’s AAR Airlift operating unit provides rotary-wing aircraft<br />

<strong>and</strong> related personnel, equipment <strong>and</strong> maintenance to transport personnel, cargo <strong>and</strong><br />

mail in support of U.S. <strong>and</strong> NATO operations in Afghanistan. AAR Airlift will support the<br />

requirement using three Bell 214ST, seven Sikorsky S-61 <strong>and</strong> two Sikorsky S-92 helicopters,<br />

which were acquired to fulfill the initial contract award.<br />
