airberlin technik provides servicing
to Emirates’ A380 in Munich
With the first flight of the Emirates Airbus
A380 from Dubai to Munich, airberlin technik
expands its range of capability to include
the double-deck aircraft. In future, the EASA
Part 145 certified maintenance company will
perform the transit check every day, while
the aircraft is on the ground at the Bavarian
capital city. At the Munich location, airberlin
technik runs a hangar with 12,000 m² of
floor area, with space for up to six narrowbody
aircraft or three wide-body aircraft,
along with employing 270 staff. airberlin
technik already provides complete line maintenance
to Emirates in Germany at Düsseldorf,
Hamburg, Frankfurt and also Munich.
This includes maintenance contracts for the
aircraft types Airbus A330, A340, A380 and
also Boeing 777.

Astronics acquires avionics interface
solutions supplier Ballard Technology
Astronics Corporation, a leader in advanced,
high-performance lighting, electrical power
and automated test systems for the global
aerospace and defense industries, has acquired
privately-held Ballard Technology, an
Everett, WA company that designs and
produces avionics interface solutions for
defense and commercial aerospace applications.
Astronics acquired all of the stock
of Ballard for $24m in cash. An additional
purchase consideration of up to $5.5m may
be paid by Astronics if Ballard achieves certain
revenue growth targets over each of the
next five years. Founded in 1986, Ballard is
projecting 2011 annual revenue of approxi-
mately $11.0m, achieving a compound annual
growth rate during the previous three
years of over 20%. Ballard’s databus products
can be used anytime avionics systems
on an aircraft are upgraded.
Bombardier reports increased net income
for 3rd quarter
Bombardier reported its financial results for
the third quarter ended October 31, 2011.
Revenues increased to $4.6bn, compared to
$4bn last fiscal year. Earnings before financing
income, financing expense and income
taxes (EBIT) totaled $301m, compared to
$250m last fiscal year, while the EBIT margin
reached 6.5%, compared to 6.3% last
year. Net income amounted to $192m for
the third quarter ended October 31, 2011,
compared to $147m for the same period
last fiscal year. Free cash flow (cash flows
from operating activities less net additions
to property, plant and equipment and intangible
assets) usage totaled $346m for
the third quarter, compared to a usage of
$108m for the same period last fiscal year.
The cash position amounted to $2.7bn as
at October 31, 2011, a level similar to last
year, compared to $4.2bn as at January 31,
2011. The overall backlog stood at a strong
$55.3bn as at October 31, 2011, compared
to $52.7bn as at January 31, 2011.

AAR selected to extend airlift support for U.S. Military
Boeing celebrated the opening of its new
Interiors Fabrication facility in North Charleston.

South Carolina team will manufacture 787
interior parts including stowbins, closets,
partitions, class dividers, floor-mounted
stowbins used by flight attendants, overhead
rests for flight-crews and flight attendants,
video control stations and attendant
modules for Boeing South Carolina. The
300,000 ft² facility includes state-of-the-art
manufacturing equipment, and employees
will use the latest Lean processes and tools
to efficiently produce interior components
to match 787 production rates at Boeing
South Carolina.
UOP, a Honeywell company, has been
awarded a $1.1m contract from the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) via the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center
to develop and demonstrate technology that
will produce renewable jet fuel from alcohols
found in natural feedstocks. Under the contract,
Honeywell’s UOP will produce renewable
jet fuel from a type of alcohol called
isobutanol. Isobutanol, to be supplied for this
project by advanced biofuel company Gevo,
The United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) exercised two renewal options
for AAR to provide airlift support in Afghanistan through October of 2012. The first
option has a value of $99m and is part of a task order awarded to AAR in October, 2010.
The second option has a value of $51m and is part of a task order awarded to AAR in
August, 2011. The Company’s AAR Airlift operating unit provides rotary-wing aircraft
and related personnel, equipment and maintenance to transport personnel, cargo and
mail in support of U.S. and NATO operations in Afghanistan. AAR Airlift will support the
requirement using three Bell 214ST, seven Sikorsky S-61 and two Sikorsky S-92 helicopters,
which were acquired to fulfill the initial contract award.
