WWith 2009 gone and done, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised that it ended on a high note. It
is always better to err on the side of caution and over deliver than the other way around. I hope we
have been successful in exceeding your expectations.
As I look ahead to a new decade, I am inspired by the return of business as usual to our lives. The
economy seems to be recovering and, even with the paradigm shift in how we used to do things,
most of us are adapting. We are evolving to include social media as a prime communication tool in this
digital age. Anyone who is not armed with a Blackberry or iPhone will be kept out of the loop. The
convenience of such a device as allowed me to be anywhere in the world and be in touch.
The year ahead for BMW is full of new releases and more leading edge technology. Whether it is the
new X5 M, X6 M or X6 Active Hybrid, you will want to pay attention during your highly anticipated
delivery. These new vehicles encompass sheer driving pleasure and excitement.
We invite you to drop by for a test drive and experience the BMW difference.
I do hope you will join us on May 8th as we look to help three worthy organizations for the 5th Annual
Brian Jessel BMW Gala: Cabriolet. Jay Leno will entertain us all at centre stage. Jay Leno is our kind
of guy – a car guy. We have gone to great lengths to bring him to Vancouverfor this very special evening.
Thank you for your support in the past and going forward. Our commitment to our valued clients, and
to this great Olympic City, remains stronger then ever.
Alex Pautler was an extremely helpful Service
Advisor. He was more than professional -- he
took the time to take care of my needs and did it
with humour and down-to-earth conversations.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with him. He
also took care of all issues from beginning to end.
The next time I will be asking for him.
Holsen Chang
I would like to make a quick comment of
appreciation.
I am on my second pre-owned BMW, an '04 M3.
I have had dealings with all of the BMW
dealerships in the lower mainland.
I have noticed that consistently the Brian Jessel
dealership has had lowest prices on parts.
Also, on my last visit to both your competitor in
Richmond and the Vancouver Brian Jessel
dealership there was a big difference in service,
your staff was friendly and helpful to the extent
that I have vowed to nevervisit your competitor in
Richmond and will continue to go to yourVancouver
dealership even though it's out of my way.
It has been almost a year since my wife, Sarah
and I purchased our 335xi Coupe, following
the recommendation of my good friend,
Eugene Kwan. On reflection, our experience
with your whole team, Cary Lau in particular,
was outstanding. We were treated with
professionalism and respect. To update you, we
love the Coupe – it is such a pleasure to drive!
Even though we were last in the dealership
some nine months ago, our positive memories
have not diminished. We are now looking to
replace our other vehicle and we will be sure to
call Cary in the next few months!
I recently purchased a BMW 335 coupe from
your dealership and I would like you to know that
I am very pleased with the service I received and
the performance of my new vehicle. I would like
to thank your employee Andrew Hong for his
help with locating the BMW that meets my
specifications, ordering the vehicle, keeping me
up to date to final delivery. He did an outstanding
job. I am glad I went to your dealership.
Dr. Peter Ng
The whole experience was great! My first BMW
ever and you guys really take the time out to treat
the client with respect and also not feeling
cheated when walking out the dealership. My
Brian Jessel experience has been the first time
EVER that I felt I got my money’s worth. Thanks
again to everyone and also to our rep Khan.
He did an outstanding job!
I am glad I went to your dealership.
Thank you so much for your tremendous
support of our 17th annual golf tournament,
benefitting our Meals on Wheels program. The
golfers greatly recognized and appreciated your
contribution to the event. And this year, with your
involvement, we raised over $15,000! Kosher
Meals On Wheels provides home delivery of hot
meals by volunteers, which assists individuals
that are frail and/or homebound seniors. Again,
thank you for your commitment to making a
difference in peoples’ lives.
Barry Dunner
I wanted to thank you for your generous
participation in our Boys’ Co 25th Anniversary
event. It was a huge success with about 1,000
people in attendance. As important, we were
thrilled to be able to raise over $15,000 for the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Your
gift of the BMW Yacht Sport Polo for our silent
auction went a long way in helping us surpass
our goals. Your support was greatly appreciated.
No other comments - Paul and the rest of the
Brian Jessel group were fantastic - a great
buying experience, particularly considering as I
had always used Brokers to purchase my
previous 2 new vehicles. I will definitely come
back to Brian Jessel for my next purchase.
Douglas Blakeney
We purchased a 128i Cabriolet in September of
2008 from sales consultant Paul Killeen. He was
most patient, answering questions and providing
assistance. We found him to be a “real treasure”.
When the time came for the annual service, Paul
again was very helpful; giving his own time to drive
us to ourvarious locations while service was being
performed. However, we feel Paul went way
beyond his professional requirements last week.
Our car was scheduled forthe replacement ofthe
brake stop lamp on the trunk lid - which had fallen
off! It was thought that it would only take a short
time to deal with priorto us bringing in the vehicle.
When the shop looked at it, they said they needed
the rest of the day to correct a fault in original
design. That left us at noon in the dealership and
having to be in White Rock (about an hours drive
away) by 3 pm and the car not being readytill 4:30
or 5. What are we to do now? Paul said no
problem and gave us his vehicle and said he
would drive ours out to us laterthat night. Wow!!!
That made our trip. Later that night (9 pm) Paul
arrived with our car repaired and cleaned. Paul has
proven to be a very professional consultant with a
dedication to his customers. We truly recommend
for him some extra acknowledgement beyond
what we have given him ourselves - possibly
“Consultant of the Year” award. It is so special to
find a dealership that has such dedicated staff.
Rick & Evelyn Dolley
Excellent service from Kevin Luk. Much more
professional and personalized service compared
to that handed out at other dealerships.
Alan Berkman
I have just received my car and the professionalism
demonstrated by Valentino from start to finish to
the follow up, to the survey, etc makes me a
happy customer. I am very well connected in the
market and will be recommending Valentino and
Brian Jessel to all without a doubt. As a
suggestion placing BMW's in the malls for display
such as Surrey Central for all to view with a little
display on pricing and the technology built into
them, I believe will most certainly help Brian
Jessel increase sales. BMW's have long been
reliable cars with the notion that its frightfully
expensive, but I know that’s not the case. Why
should anyone get another car when they can
enjoy the Ultimate Driving machine at an
affordable price. Just a suggestion!
I bought our fourth BMW, not because of the
name, but because of what is behind it, great
cars with excellent performance, amazing quality
and superior engineering. What I know now
after the most pleasant ever car purchasing
experience thank's to Steve Giesbrecht and the
rest of your staff, is that buying it at Brian Jessel
is like assuring a happy ending to the usually
painful ordeal of buying a car. Thank you Steve.
I
It’s finally here: 2010. It is a year that has been hotly anticipated by Canadians as we welcome
the world to one of the most beautiful cities on earth: Vancouver. The Games are about to begin,
marking history on the West Coast of our fair country. I can’t wait!
Before I look forward to the road ahead, it’s worth taking a look back on 2009. The year started
anxiously as luxury carmakers were urged to hold on tight for what promised to be a very bumpy
ride. As it turned out, it was a meaningful year in BMW Canada’s history. Sales records for both
new and pre-owned vehicles were shattered and we swiftly reclaimed our title as Canada’s #1
luxury automotive brand. Thank you Canada and thank you Vancouver!
In this issue, experts at Team Jessel share highlights from the new 2010 lineup of heavy metal.
Whether it’s the new X5M that sprints at 555 hp or the eco-conscious construction of the X6
Active Hybrid, there are options enough for even the most discerning driver. This issue’s sleek
cover model, the new Gran Turismo, has earned this spot because it’s a true beauty. I have fallen
in love with this vehicle and hope to have one parked in my own garage very soon.
I also have my fingers crossed this month for snow; plenty of Olympic medals for our home team;
and perhaps a Valentine’s treat or two – that last one is as easy as dog-earing page 20 of this
issue. I am pleased to welcome award-winning journalist Janine Falcon to our contributor roster.
In her story “Ain’t Love Grand,” Janine challenges us to look beyond the obvious truffles and
roses when expressing our Valentine’s Day devotion. This story will help you dazzle your beloved
in thoughtful new ways.
And there’s yet another calendar date to anticipate this year: Brian Jessel BMW’s Annual Gala:
CABRIOLET, on May 8th 2010. More than 1,100 of us will mix and mingle and have a good laugh
as the recently re-throned master of late night, Jay Leno, takes the stage for a full hour of stand
up. This year’s Annual Gala will support three local organizations: Arts Umbrella, Canucks Autism
Network and VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation’s Pancreatic Cancer Research effort.
An exciting year lies ahead, and I wish you all much joy and success in 2010. At Brian Jessel
BMW, our greatest joy comes from our success: making dreams come true one BMW at a time.
Q & A with
Jim Murray
Managing Director, Brian Jessel BMW
WWhat’s new at BMW?
One of the biggest changes is that there is a new President and CEO of
BMW Canada. Mr. Franz Jung arrived shortly after the first quarter of
last year. He has a vast amount of experience from his long tenure with
BMW Group AG, which has also meant that he has been positioned in
many different countries around the world. Mr. Jung is very focused on
market share leadership in the luxury segment and one of his main goals
is to have the highest level of customer satisfaction in the industry. These
core values are near and dear to Brian Jessel as well. As we have seen,
consumers still have an appetite for quality and this is what helped us
through the toughest part of 2009. In addition, BMW’s focus on volume
has provided some tremendous programs that make purchasing, leasing
and financing more affordable than ever.
On the product side, we have many new and exciting vehicles arriving.
The X6 M and X5 M have just come in: these high-performance M
engines have all the incredible engineering that goes behind the M
products. These are fastest SAV’s in the world, producing an
astonishing 555hp. We also received the new retractable hardtop Z4
Roadster last spring. The newly designed 2010 7 Series now has xDrive
models and is available with an optional M Sport Package. At the end
of 2009, we saw the first new 5 Series Gran Turismo followed by the all
new 5 Series Sedan by April of this year. Later in 2010, BMW will start
production of the newly designed 2011 X3 SAV followed by the new X1
SAV. As you can see, BMW's product cycle will create more new and
exciting products.
Managing Director
brianJESSEL WINTER 2010 13
“
Our strength is
”
in our people
and processes.
14 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
What are some changes you have made to improve Brian Jessel BMW
since accepting your new position as Managing Director?
Like most companies we had to find ways to be more efficient. When there is a slow down in the
economy it gives you a chance to look at your processes and make positive changes. Of course, we
looked at ways to cut costs in our business but at the same time we wanted to give a higher level of
service to our customers. The “Ultimate Customer Experience” has always been one of Brian Jessel’s
core values, but having the time to make sure we are doing everything right every day, every time with
every customer is the challenge. We have spent time focusing internally to improve our processes
which ultimately provides you a better customer experience.
Our strength is in our people and processes. It’s not just one person or one idea but collectively
implementing new ideas or procedures that improve our customers’ experience. I would say I’ve
brought a new level of understanding to our staff: that customers do not view us as separate
departments but as one dealership “Brian Jessel BMW”. The customer experience must be the same
throughout the lifetime of vehicle ownership for each customer and in each area of our facility.
I also like to apply my life experiences to our business. I travel with my family to Hawaii every year and
have stayed at the same hotel the last two years. I won’t mention the name of the hotel, but this year’s
trip was a completely different experience from last year. The hotel had laid off 100 staff at the
beginning of the year and the service level suffered, which ultimately affected my experience. Would
I go back there again? Probably not. I recognize that in business you are only as good as your last
experience. That’s the “moment of truth”.
What do you think about diesels/ hybrids?
We’ve had tremendous success with the new diesel vehicles. The X5D and 335D are truly amazing
performance BMWs with the added bonus of fuel efficiencies that are just unbelievable. My neighbor
recently purchased and X5D and tells me he is getting approximately 800 km between fills. As for
expanding the diesel line up, it really depends on how the North American markets accept diesel
technology. In Europe, it’s the norm and I hope that diesel technology will become a larger part ofthe North
American BMW line-up in the future—they’re green, clean, and powerful and extremely fuel efficient.
Hybrids make their debut this winter with the X6 Active Hybrid. Again this vehicle is more focused on
the performance end of the market, combining large horsepower with the efficiency of hybrids. The
7 Series will also have a hybrid model out this year.
BMW has always found ways to perfect the petrol engine and make it more efficient as well; we may
see the return of 4-cylinder petrol engines in Canada. As market conditions trend towards more fuel
efficient vehicles, BMW will expand the available engines to meet this demand.
Are there any new technologies around the cornerthat you can share?
The way our cars interact with us will continue to evolve. BMW Teleservice will launch sometime by
the middle of 2010. BMW Teleservice technology has been part of the equipment in some of our
products for years while this technology was being developed. This is really futuristic stuff. With
What aboutthe 1 Series 5-door? Will it be available in Canada anytime soon?
The current 1 Series 5-door was not built with North America specifications, so if it comes to Canada
it would be the next generation model. There needs to be enough demand in North America for
BMW to enter this segment so it’s still up in the air.
How did Brian Jessel BMW finish up in 2009?
Fantastic. We sold 191 new cars in December alone! It’s definitely been the year of the deal. It may
have been a slow start but really business has been up from last year’s results starting in May and
continuing on throughout the rest of the year. BMW has continued with very aggressive programs
to keep up the volume on new cars and we have seen Pre-Owned pricing dropping substantially
from last year, which has made it more affordable than ever to buy a Pre-Owned BMW. The
challenges of early 2009 made us all stronger and better. We have lots to look forward to in B.C. with
the Olympics just around the corner—the city is buzzing with excitement.
What should we expect to see in 2010 from BMW and Brian Jessel? 2010 will be an exciting year
for all businesses. We certainly have a tremendous opportunity to bring more products to our
customers in 2010. The BMW certified Pre-Owned volume will increase with the higher number
of lease maturities in 2010. This will create a large selection of quality Pre-Owned BMW’s at very
affordable pricing and payments. I also know that BMW Canada will want to continue its leadership
position in the luxury segment plus achieve record sales objectives for New Vehicle sales; this
means a continuation of great products and well positioned vehicles. I believe Brian Jessel BMW
will set a new benchmark in Canada by selling over 2000 New BMWs and 1000 Pre-Owned BMWs
in 2010.
Besides great cars and deals we will expand our service operations to produce quicker service
appointment availability times. We are planning on renovating and expanding our customer service
lounge and business center to create a new VIP customer lounge area for all our clients. This will
incorporate an enclosed private viewing lounge with a variety of entertainment options, beverages
and private area for internet or business centre features. In addition, we have plans to increase
our BMW Service rentals. We currently have the largest fleet of BMW service loaners in North
America with over 100 BMWs but I want to bring that number up to 150! It’s very expensive to
maintain this fleet but I truly believe this will give our customers what they want: the “ultimate
customer experience”.
“
It’s definitely
”
been the year
of the deal.
Introducing the new
X5M
AND
X6M
By Raj Desor
New Car Sales Manager
Under the skin, both the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M sport the new M
TwinPowerTurbo engine, the most powerful production engine made
by BMW. When it comes to horsepower, The BMW X5 M and BMW
X6 M are unprecedented in this market. This new M engine is the
world’s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold that encompasses
both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll
twin turbo technology.
There is no competition. With an industry-leading 555 hp and a 500
lb-ft torque spread from 1500 to 5650 rpm, you will be launched from
0-60 in 4.5 seconds. This enormous amount of power is delivered to
the wheels via a 6-speed M sport automatic transmission. It also
includes manual paddle shifting that reduces torque through the
momentary deactivation of individual cylinders, giving you even more
control. As your foot presses down on the accelerator, you will feel the
guttural roar from the exhaust and a wave of torque will hit you like a
ton of bricks. There is no other way to describe this performance
powerhouse. It is all M.
With the help of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and
the Dynamic Performance Control system, all this power and
performance is smoothly controlled and unmatched driver feedback is
channelled through the new M Servotronic steering, Adaptive Drive
Suspension and a massive high-performance braking system, which
features giant four-piston fixed callipers at the front with floating callipers
at the rear. Internally-vented lightweight brake discs rotors measure 15.6
inches in diameter at front and 15.2 inches at rear.
Mind blowing performance meets functionality: Experience the new
X5 M orX6 M and you will enter an exclusive automotive world you could
never have imagined. The world’s most desirable Sports ActivityVehicle
and Sports Activity Coupe are now part of the BMW M tradition that
combines technology and design to deliver maximum driving dynamics.
All these features combine to deliver an exceptionally authentic BMW
driving experience: incredible handling, supreme ride quality and stability,
as well as performance that others can only dream about. The versatility
that comes with a Sports Activity Vehicle or Sports Activity Coupe is simply
the icing on the cake.
The BMW X5 M and X6 M both share the unique combination of
performance and luxury that you’ve come to expect with a BMW M series.
As a result, there are not many options that are not standard. For those of
us that cannot live withoutthe exclusive BMW Executive Package, it may be
added when you order. Indulge yourself with soft close doors, a rear view
camera with Top View that provides additional imaging ofthe rear and sides
of the vehicle in the control display, a Pearl Leather instrument panel, a
Heads-up display with M-Specific colour display that includes a gear
indicator and revolution display and of course the exquisite BMW Individual
Audio System with Dirac Live that features SIRIUS satellite radio.
Of course, it is difficult to be completely objective when it comes to a new
BMW vehicle but when you experience this new addition to the M family, you
will understand why I am so excited aboutthese vehicles. BMW’s success is
rooted in their ability to make their products number 1. Issues such as cost,
production or a shift in the economy do not waiver BMW’s commitment to
produce the ultimate vehicle. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are perfect
examples: they meld technology and design combining it with the exquisite
fit and finish holding true to BMW’s authenticity and M legacy.
I welcome you to experience this next chapter of BMW M historyforyourself.
Hybrid Technology with Sheer
Driving Pleasure: BMW X6
ActiveHybrid is the World’s
most powerful hybrid
24 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
By Valentino Almeida
BMW Gold Sales Master
I can remember back in the Fall of 2000, it was a Saturday morning and
we had just opened up our doors. This is when we saw the first
shipment of X5s rolling onto the lot. Who would have thought that a
companythat makes performance cars would be the benchmark in the
SUV segment. And now once again with the introduction of the new
X6 Hybrid, BMW is setting the bar high in the hybrid market as well.
My current demo is the X6 35I and it’s the best overall vehicle I have ever driven.
I was very excited when they announced the X6 Hybrid because I really feel that this is the best of
both worlds for power and day to day functionality. The reduced fuel consumption is a real bonus.
Did you know that BMW started to develop hybrid drive many years ago, long before the
foundation of the Global Hybrid Cooperation? In fact, BMW tested the electric drivetrain as early
as in the late 1980s. The BMW E1 is an example of this early adoption of green technologies. In
1995, BMW presented its first hybrid vehicle based on the BMW 518i. The outstanding potential
of this drive technology was proven by the BMW X5 EfficientDynamics presented in 2003 and
the BMW Concept X3 EfficientDynamics which was revealed to the world in 2005. The BMW
Group has been conducting research on hybrid and green technology for more than 15 years. The
BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is the next evolution in the BMW X5
EfficientDynamics development strategy.
The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid really is the highest degree of maturity in
hybrid technology thus far. BMW ActiveHybrid is far superior to
conventional hybrid vehicles in terms of driving dynamics. Its fuel
consumption and emission ratings are up to 20 percent better than
on a comparable car with conventional drivetrain technology. BMW
ActiveHybrid is a particular highlight of BMW EfficientDynamics: it is the
next step in the ongoing reduction of fuel consumption and emissions.
BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular concept following the
strategy of “Best of Hybrid” to integrate the most appropriate, optimum
components in each case.
This combination with innovative hybrid technology offers the most
sporting and dynamic rendition of a BMW X vehicle. The innovative
two-mode active transmission allows variable power transmission via
the power split incorporating planetary gearsets. In addition, the active
transmission incorporates an electric drive system and enables the
vehicle to drive at fixed transmission ratios within one system. This
combines the driving dynamics and efficiency of the combustion
engine and the electric drive system in an innovative, intelligent manner.
There is an optimised use of energy and superior power in every situation.
This new model proves that driving a more green vehicle does not mean
you have to sacrifice power and performance.
The innovative power transmission featured by BMW Concept X6
ActiveHybrid combines two compact, high-performance electric motors
with a transmission using fixed transmission ratios. These drive systems
are connected to one another by three planetary gear sets allowing a
power split covering the drive forces of the combustion engine and the
electric motors in two transmission ranges and thus ensuring a level of
variability quite impossible on a conventional hybrid drivetrain thanks to the
combination of the two drive sources able to provide optimum power
and maximum efficiency under all driving conditions and power
requirements from the driver.
This system is referred to as a two-mode active. The two-mode active
transmission is based on an ECVT electrical continuously variable
transmission. The two operating modes, one of which has been optimised
for low, the other for high speeds, are supplemented by fixed transmission
ratios. The two power-split ECVT sections allow the drivetrain to run at
continuously variable speeds and ensure full, highly efficient hybrid
functions whether you are driving fast or slow. All of this also means that
fuel consumption is reduced by up to 20 percent compared with similar
BMWs running on a combustion engine alone. Although this is a twomode
system, the electric motors are very compact. This facilitates their
integration into the vehicle as well as a minimum increase in weight, which
is lower in the case of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid than with
conventional hybrid cars offering comparable power.
BMW ConceptX6 ActiveHybrid can be driven on electric power only, on
the combustion engine alone, or with a combination of both power units.
Depending on driving conditions, the electric motors may also be used
for both accelerating and regenerative application of the brakes, in which
case the brake forces generated when coasting and when applying the
brakes flow into the high-volt energy storage unit to provide an increase
in electric power. This energy is subsequently available for further use
and need not be generated by the combustion engine and is therefore
available virtually free of charge. Already using this principle in a similar
manner on production cars featuring Brake Energy Regeneration, BMW
is able to ensure efficient energy management and maintain the battery
at a high charge level. On the road, the support provided by the electric
motors is referred to as “boosting”. It serves, first, to give the car
incomparable spontaneity and a direct response and, second, to
significantly reduce fuel consumption.
1 High efficient BMW V8 gasoline engine (300kW/600Nm)
with High Precision Injection and TwinPowerTurbo Max.
Power (system 357 KW/780 Nm).
2 Two-Mode ActiveHybrid transmission (2 electric motors max.
67 kW/280Nm each, planetary gearbox, power split,7speeds).
3 High Voltage Electronics (max. 425 Volts).
4 High performance Ni-MH battery (312 Volt/ 2,4 kWh).
This hybrid does not lose BMW’s typical design language: superior driving
dynamics are central in this Sports Activity Coupe as is a unique look.
Indeed, the meticulous design of the body combines the sporting
elegance of a BMW Coupe with the striking DNA of the BMW X family.
The striking front view with a clear focus on the vehicle’s width provides
the signature look of a BMW X car further. This is further emphasised by
the extra-large BMW kidney grille that also serves as the air intake with its
robust slats. The engine compartment lid has sharp contours sub-divided
by well-defined lines that taper towards the BMW kidney grille. The hood
has a powerful curvature at the top—the striking BMW powerdome.
Through their unique shape and design, the D-pillars provide a clear
expression of power and stability. The innovative design of the rear lights,
in turn, emphasizes the sheer width of the car, while horizontal lines
highlight the wide track.
BMW ConceptX6 ActiveHybrid proudly presents its unmistakable design
through truly authentic, unique features clearly visible at first sight. Through
its look alone this car arouses the greatest expectations. The innovative
philosophy of BMW X6 ActiveHybrid clearly proves that large and dynamic
vehicles may also be driven economically and with a clear focus on the
environment, at the same time reaching new horizons in terms of driving
pleasure and aesthetic design.
BMW Welt:
The Ultimate European
Driving Experience
Have you ever tried to imagine the place where your BMW was
born? Born in the sense of imagined, designed and physically
built. Such a place exists and it is a world of its own—the BMW
Welt embodies the ethos of all things BMW. Welt literally means
world in German and BMW World is a fitting name to describe
incredible place. Located in Munich, Germany, the Welt is not only
a place, it is a total BMW experience. BMW’s new European
Delivery Program is the perfect way to explore this magic world
and what better way to get acquainted with your new vehicle
than the autobahn and the road’s of Europe.
“Why wouldn’t you get your new BMW delivered in Germany?” exclaimed Aaron Dale, a
BMW enthusiast. Aaron ordered a 2009 328i coupé from Brian Jessel BMW and a few months
later headed for Munich to pick up his new car. Little did he know he was about to embark
on one of the most memorable trips ever.
June 4, 2009 was Aaron’s big day. He headed to the BMW Welt at 8am. BMW asks you to be
at the Welt an hour and a half before your scheduled appointment so you get ready for the
experience ahead and soak in the atmosphere of the beautiful Welt complex. The first thing
you do is go to the Check-In in the Premium Lounge, where you will plan your day. There were
lots of people from all over the world there picking up cars on that particular day but Aaron
noted that he seemed to be the only Canadian. Before your car is delivered, a personal
attendant picks you up at the Premium Lounge and takes you to the Product Info Centre
where you get a personalised briefing. Using the latest multi-media technology, your
attendant explains all of the important functions and features of your new BMW. Aaron
noted that this was like a video game simulator:“It was loads of fun.”
“Delivery is a dramatic experience.” You go down a huge staircase to the Premiere area and
when you get to the bottom your BMW is waiting for you all lit up and revolving on a
turntable. It’s not all drama and lights: your personal attendant stays by your side to answer
any questions you might have about your new vehicle. At this point a BMW staff member took
Aaron’s picture with his new 328i Coupe to commemorate the moment. The atmosphere is
festive: there is even a small reception with food. This is just the beginning of the experience
because next you really have a chance to see what is under the hood.
Besides the incredible delivery moment, Aaron particularly enjoyed touring the plant and
the Welt. If you really want to know what your BMW is made of, take a tour of BMW’s
Munich plant. This gives you a chance to see how individual cars are manufactured and the
precision mechanics that go into each BMW from sheet steel to test stands. Guided tours are
available on weekdays every half hour. Allow approximately two and half hours for the tour.
The BMW Welt took four years to build and was opened in October 2007. Coop Himmelb(l)au
is the group of architects that designed this multi-functional customer experience and
exhibition facility for BMW. If you are curious about the stunning architecture of BMW’s
corporate campus and the concept behind the building of the BMW Welt, there is a Welt
tour on the hour every hour on weekdays. This experience takes approximately 80
minutes and is of particular interest to design buffs and BMW fanatics.
Don’t forget to visit the BMW Museum, which is also housed at the Welt. Here you will
come to understand that your new BMW is one link in a long history of German
automotive and aviation history. There are over 120 exhibits in this extensive museum and
a thorough visit will take about two and half hours.
All of this visiting can be rather tiring, but the Welt has several exclusive restaurants and
cafés where you can rest up for more. You can make lunch or dinner reservations during the
check-in process when you arrive in the morning. Be sure to visit the Welt shops where you
can find BMW lifestyle products and original accessories.
As you can see, it is easy to spend several days soaking in the atmosphere and learning all
about BMW at the Welt in Munich. BMW recommends taking your time and even
considering spending two days to explore the Welt. However, it seems like after a few hours
most people are dying to get their new vehicles on the German roads. This was certainly
the case with Aaron Dale, who headed out from the Welt in his new 328i in the early
afternoon. Aaron explained that this was enough time to get thoroughly acquainted with
his new car and get a tour of the Welt and neighbouring plant.
Over the next two months and 9,500 kilometers, Aaron had a chance to enjoy his new
BMW on some of Europe’s most exciting driving terrain. His tour took him from Germany
to Austria, through Italy, France, Switzerland into Belgium through the Netherlands up to
Sweden and Finland and then back to Germany by ferry. This epic voyage ended in Paris,
where Aaron dropped off his 328i coupé to have it shipped back to Canada.
Aaron loved seeing what his car could do on the German autobahn but warned those
planning a similar trip to watch the speed limit when crossing into Austria. One of the
highlights of Aaron’s European tour was driving his 328i on the famous Nürburgring. This
is a 13-mile racetrack that Formula One driver Jackie Stewart nicknamed “The Green Hell”.
Nürburgring is considered one the most demanding and toughest purpose-built race
tracks in the world. Generally used for testing cars and professional racing, the Nürburgring
is often open to the public in the evening and on the occasional weekend. Anybody and
nearly any car can use the track at this time. After doing his research, Aaron arrived at
Nürburg and paid his 75 euros for 4 laps of exhilarating driving. “It was thrilling to drive so
fast” but what was most exciting and terrifying for Aaron was watching the other drivers
in their souped up cars as they zoomed by at break-neck speeds.
Touring Europe in your new BMW is certainly a memorable
experience whether you spend two weeks or two months.
Aaron’s advice for those planning a European delivery is to try to
go for as long as you can—there is much to see and a lot of
roads to drive. Also, have alternative transportation available
while waiting for your second delivery: BMW says that it takes
6-8 weeks to ship your car back to Canada. After such a
wonderful driving experience in Europe you are sure to have a
little separation anxiety.
BMW Canada has made European delivery easier than ever.
Now you can lease or finance your European delivery through
BMW Financial Services using the same terms and MSRP as
regular Canadian delivery at the dealership. Your new BMW will
be delivered in Germany with tourist plates, which allow you to
circulate freely throughout the European Union and several
Scandinavian countries. Two weeks of insurance is included in
the price of delivery. You can easily extend the length of your
insurance policy when you order your vehicle. At the end of your
trip, you can drop off your BMW at one of the 11 convenient
BMW X1 Replica
Kids built a full scaled X1
800 children with the help of
BMW Staff, built this replica
locations in Europe. The cost of shipping, marine insurance,
customs clearance and duty are included in purchase price for the
European Delivery Program. Your BMW will be shipped back to
Canada, where you will be able to pick up your freshly detailed
vehicle at Brian Jessel BMW. What a wonderful souvenir of your
trip to Europe!
A few little details to keep in mind are that the X5 and X6 are not
available for European delivery. If you want to have your car
delivered in Germany in the winter months, you will need to arrange
for winter tires (in accordance with German law). You may also need
an International Driver’s License if traveling to countries such as
Austria. BMW is not responsible for any speeding tickets.
After his European delivery, Aaron Dale told us that there was no real
downside to this experience, “I can’t imagine why everyone doesn’t
do this.” Ask one of our sales consultants for more information
about BMW’s European Delivery Program and sign up for what is
perhaps the ultimate driving experience.
INTRODUCING
THE NEW BMW 5 SERIES
GranTurismo
I am very excited to announce the introduction of the BMW 5 series
Gran Turismo. This vehicle is a contemporary interpretation of the fine
European classic: it combines the stylish sophistication and elegance
of a luxury limousine like the 7 series with the flexibility of the 5 series
station wagon and the versatility of the X5 SAV. With its luxurious and
generous interior space and highly efficient engine, it is a very new
concept of a modern crossover vehicle. BMW, once again, is ahead
of the game in this segment.
”
38 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
What makes this new vehicle so exceptional? First of all, the long-wheelbase provides limousine
levels of interior space and ride refinement. The Gran Turismo’s distinctive shape offers length that
nearly matches that of the BMW 7 series, creating a more spacious feeling for its occupants. The
1.56 meter vehicle height means that the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has a lower roofline than the
BMW X5, yet it still has the same headroom. Passengers are not the only ones who benefit from
BMW’s focus on comfort and functionality: the Gran Turismo’s semi-command driving position
allows for ease of entry and greater forward visibility.
For those of you who like to travel or participate in sports, this new vehicle offers the second largest
luggage capacity after the BMW X5. The innovative luggage partition easily enables you to increase
the trunk capacity from 440-litres to 1,700-liters. In addition, the dual tailgate creates flexible storage
options. Opening the small, sedan-like luggage compartment lid beneath the rear window with the
tailgate remaining closed, the driver and passengers are able to conveniently load the rear
compartment without causing any unpleasant noise, drafts or changes in temperature within the
passenger compartment. To load large and bulky items, the large tailgate can be opened for
maximum convenience.
The 5 Series Gran Turismo comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which was
previously only available in the BMW 760i twelve-cylinder luxury sedan. This high-tech automatic
combines gearshift comfort, dynamic performance and great efficiency. The BMW 5 Series Gran
Turismo houses the most advanced turbo engine technology, allowing it to set new standards in
performance, economy and emission management (0-100 km/h 5.5sec, 300HP/600Nm/lb-ft; EU5
Standard: CO2 emissions 263g/km; Fuel consumption 11.2L/100km combined; 550i). BMW
Efficient Dynamics are standard features in the Gran Turismo; this includes: Brake Energy
Regeneration, Active Aerodynamics, low resistance tires, intelligent lightweight design and intelligent
energy management.
The ultra modern suspension technology of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is designed for both
engaging driving dynamics and grand touring comfort. Integral Active Steering is available as an
option, combining active steering of the front wheels with rear-wheel steering dependent on driving
environments and current road conditions to enhance safety and performance.
One of my favorite standard engine features is the Dynamic Drive Control that influences not only
the gearshift dynamics, but also the gas pedal and steering assistance control map. In combination
with optional Adaptive Drive, this means superior suspension function. Drivers have the choice of
NORMAL, SPORT, SPORT+, and COMFORT modes, which they can select directly on the
Dynamic Drive Control button on the centre console. With this easy selection system you can have
your cars performance match your mood or driving conditions.
One of the things that most excites me about the new 5 Series Gran Turismo is the design—when
you drive down the street in this car, people really turn their heads. I love the way the sleek surfaces
on the front and rear door panels merge smoothly into one another while the horizontal arrangement
of the instrument panel enhances the luxurious ambience. Good looks do not mean that comfort is
compromised: spacious seats, headroom and elbow freedom provide the highest standard typically
found only in luxury performance class vehicles. The rear seats can be adjusted individually to meet
the greatest demands in luxury comfort. Individually adjustable Comfort Seats with even more
adjustments at the rear are available as an option to maximize the seat positioning. That said, comfort
is also accompanied by performance and safety: the slightly elevated seating position, the clear,
structured arrangement of the controls, BMW’s new iDrive displayed on a 10.2-inch LCD Control
Display with standard cockpit Black Panel technology helps improve the driver’s control at all times.
The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the practicality of an SUV/SAV and the luxury of a 7
Series in a design that reminds me of a coupé. This vehicle is a great choice for those who enjoy
innovative design and new concepts. I don’t mean to keep you on the edge of your seats but this
car is expected to launch in 2010, and when it does, I hope that you will come in to Brian Jessel BMW
to experience the ride for yourself.
The Ultimate
Driving Experience
Bring on the Winter Weather:
By Rachel Black
BMW’s got
xDrive
It’s almost as if BMWs with xDrive were made for Vancouver
driving. Our many rainy days translate into very soggy and
potentially slippery road conditions. In order to escape the
rain, many Vancouverites take refuge in the nearby
mountains, where the precipitation turns to beautiful fluffy
snow—perfect for skiing and snowboarding. You may be
worrying about poor winter driving conditions but this is not
really a problem if you have the right vehicle: a BMW SUV,
SAV or car with xDrive will get you up the mountain as well as
safely around town.
What is xDrive?
An all-wheel system, xDrive is available on 10 BMW vehicles in Canada. First introduced by BMW
in 2004, xDrive delivers variable power to different wheels. So what does this mean? Well, this
translates into excellent traction control, greater safety and a high-performance driving experience.
Your BMW can sense danger and avoid it before you even realise there is a problem.
xDrive
driving conditions, 40% of the power goes to the front while the remaining 60% is delivered to the
48 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
xDrive is a complex piece of engineering but put simply it works like this: a power divider behind the
transmission distributes power and torque from the engine to the front and rear axles. In normal
rear wheels, maintaining BMW’s traditional rear-wheel bias. However, in difficult conditions the flow
of torque can vary and this can be as much as 100% to only the rear or front wheels. When sensors
detect a change in the road surface (for example, rain, snow, ice that cause slippery conditions), the
system reacts in milliseconds and redistributes power variably to each individual wheel. This counters
any under or oversteering. xDrive is an intelligent system: it adapts to the terrain you are driving on
whether it is a winding road, a muddy track or an icy driveway.
Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control team up with xDrive
xDrive is networked and complimented by BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and ABS. DSC
monitors the forces acting on the vehicles chassis and checks that they are within the maximum set
limits. If there is any danger of skidding, the DSC system intervenes by braking individual wheels as
needed. However, once the driver presses the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) button on the dash,
the systems allows a little more wheel slip. This gives the vehicle greater traction and a much sportier
style of driving. In this case, the DSC system lets the driver entirely control the vehicle only stepping
in during critical situations and at higher speeds. DSC offers ABS, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC)
and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and when twinned with xDrive this provides not only an ultimate
driving experience but also one of the safest rides on challenging roads.
The power of the M harnessed by xDrive
The BMW X6 was the first BMW to feature Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). DPC is now also
featured in the new BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. DPC enhances driving stability in demanding
situations, which is perfect for powerful M vehicles. “Vectoring” of torque between the right and left
rear wheels greatly improves steering precision and tracking stability at all speeds. Dynamic Stability
Control (DSC) is only needed to stabilize the vehicle under extreme lateral acceleration. The driver can
monitor the activity of DPC and xDrive through a clear visual depiction on the dash, which shows
the driver how much power is being distributed to each wheel. If that’s just too much technology for
you, DSC can be completely deactivated at the touch of a button. BMW’s cutting-edge xDrive
engineering allows these powerful vehicles to safely tackle all kinds of terrain.
Get the most of xDrive with the Dynamic Handling Package
The Dynamic Handling Package can be added to many xDrive vehicles. This allows you you to enjoy
great safety features such as Adaptive Drive, Active Steering and Adaptive Headlights. Adaptive
Drive works through roll stabilization technology that uses an electronic damper system. FlexRay
data transmission technology is used by Adaptive Drive to rapidly exchange vehicle data between
individual suspension control systems to ensure almost instant response from road surfaces and
driving dynamics. This means fantastic cornering and smooth load balance. For even greater control
at all speeds, Active Steering adapts the steering angle depending on the driving situation. At lower
speeds, this means great precision. At higher speeds, Active Steering delivers a more intense
connection with the road and an exhilarating ride. Thanks to Adaptive Headlights you no longer need
to fear those dark spots on the road: as the driver turns the wheel, the central computer uses data on
the vehicle’s steering, yaw rate and speed to calculate the optimum angle for the headlights. Electric
motors then swivel the headlights to the perfect position.
Considering a BMW X
Whether you are looking for a SUV to get you up to Whistler for a weekend of skiing or a sedan that
ensures greater safety on often slippery Highway 1, xDrive BMWs are an excellent option. All-wheel
drive does not mean that you have to sacrifice power, handling or fuel efficiency. BMW’s state of the
art engineering ensures that all-wheel drive is a bonus rather than a limitation. Unlike some all-wheel
drive vehicles, BMW’s xDrive is perfectly seamless—you cannot tell it when it is active. With xDrive,
you always have the same amazing BMW ride no matter the road conditions.
xDrive is available on 3, 5 and 7 series cars, the X3, X5, X6 SAV and the new X5 and X6 M SAVs.
There will be 20 individual models available by the end of 2009. Please come in to the Brian Jessel
BMW showroom to find out more about xDrive vehicles and request a test drive—the rainier the day,
the better.
Guide to the 2010
Winter Olympics
By Rachel Black
The Winter Olympics are coming to our beautiful city. How do you
intend to survive the arrival of the world at our doorstep while
making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime event? This is a short
guide to help you navigate Vancouver and the Olympics from
February 12-28, 2010, starting with a brief history of how this
event came to be.
How did it all get started?
As you can imagine the Winter Olympics have not been around for nearly as long as their
summer counterpart. There just wasn’t enough snow for winter sports in Greece, but that is
ancient history. The modern Olympic Games were founded in 1894 by Pierre Fredi, who
wanted to promote international cooperation and understanding through sporting
competition. The first modern Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Leading up to the
creation of a separate games for winter sports, hockey and figure skating were included as
part of the Summer Games. In 1908, figure skating made its debut as an event at the Summer
Olympics in London. It’s interesting to note that hockey and figure skating remain two of the
hottest tickets in the Games. The other winter sports had to wait a little longer to claim a
place in the limelight: it wasn’t until 1924 that the inaugural winter games were held in
Chamonix, France. First called the “International Winter Sports Weeks” (although the week
actually lasted eleven days), it wasn’t until later that this event was called the “Winter
Olympic Games”. It was such a success, with over two hundred athletes from sixteen nations
competing in sixteen events, that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to
schedule the second Winter Olympics Games in St. Moritz in 1928.
Like the Summer Games, this sporting event is held every four
years. However, the games do not always go on: they were briefly
interrupted during World War Two. The 1940 Winter Olympic
Games to be held in Japan and the 1944 Games in Italy were
cancelled due to the international conflicts happening at the time.
The first post-war Games took place in 1948 in St. Moritz,
Switzerland. Until 1992, both the Summer and Winter Olympics
were held in the same year. These events are now staggered by
two years making their organization much easier for the host
countries and for spectators.
In 2003, the IOC awarded Vancouver the 2010 Winter Olympics.
This will be the second time Canada has hosted these Games and
some of you may still have fond memories of the 1988 Winter
Olympics held in Calgary. The 2010 Winter Olympics will last 17
days, followed by 10 days of Paralympic events. A projected
number of 6850 athletes from over 80 countries will participate.
There will be 10 000 media representatives present and nearly 3
billion televisions viewers will have their eyes on our beautiful city
and some of the world’s most talented athletes.
Getting in on the Games
Getting tickets to the 2010 Winter Olympics may seem a little like
searching for the Holy Grail. You put your name in for the lottery,
you had no luck during Phase 2 and 3 ticket sales and you do not
know anyone with corporate tickets. Don’t despair! Box offices will
open on the first day of competition at each venue. Main box
offices opened in Vancouver and Whistler in January 2010. If you
don’t want to hedge your bets with ticket lotteries and long lines,
you should have a look at site like Showtime Tickets and
TicketCity. These sites are places where people can buy and sell
tickets to most events at the Games. Be warned that tickets to hot
events like hockey and figure skating will cost a pretty penny, if
you can find them. Be sure to buy tickets from a reputable site to
avoid scams.
Official sporting events are not the only things going on in
Vancouver during the Games. Don’t forget that people are coming
from all over the world to support outstanding athletes but they
will also be looking to celebrate and get into the spirit of the
Games. You will need tickets to take part in the pageantry of the
opening and closing ceremonies and these are popular events.
However, there are also many tickets available for the victory
ceremonies that will take place nearly each evening in both
Vancouver and Whistler. After the medals are presented to the top
athletes, there will be concerts featuring renowned entertainers.
Besides the official ceremonies, there will be many festivities in
the streets and squares of Whistler and Vancouver. Some places
that are likely to be popular for public celebrations and parties
include the Robson Square GE Ice Plaza downtown and David Lam
Park in Yaletown. Granville Island is rumoured to be the
headquarters for the Canadian Government and Francophone
community’s celebrations. The Squamish, Lil’wat, Tseil-Waututh
and Musqueam will be hosting celebrations at the Queen
Elizabeth Theatre Plaza at the Four Host First Nations Pavilion. The
English Bay Inukshuk is likely to be another popular gathering
place for visitors as they pose for pictures and take in the beauty
of the city.
Making your way through the crowds
Like many Vancouverites you may be worried about getting around
during the games. Be prepared and have a plan because there will be
many road closures and delays should be expected due to the sheer
volume of visitors, participants and media trying to get around the
city. Keep in mind that areas of Yaletown, Robson Street and Granville
Street will be transformed into pedestrian malls during the Games. If
you plan on driving, be aware that many official venues have limited
parking. The Vancouver Olympic Committee, VANOC, suggests using
public transit and limiting the use of private vehicles. TransLink
(Vancouver’s transit system) is planning on beefing up its regular
service by putting extra vehicles on the road.TransLink will be serving
all major event venues. In case you have guests arriving from out of
town, the recently opened Canada Line will facilitate getting to and
from the Vancouver International Airport.
Besides public transport, there are a number of options for avoiding
frustrating traffic. You might consider walking or cycling around
town, but this isn’t always the best idea in often-soggy Vancouver
winter weather. You should consider planning ahead to book a
limousine or hired-car service to take you to Olympic events, dinners
and other functions during the Games.
Planning for the Games
You have your tickets and you know how you are going to get to your
Olympic events of choice, so what’s missing? Don’t forget that the
daily services that you regularly use from dry cleaning to the gym
might be overwhelmed or difficult to get to. Perhaps the most
important item for the culinary-minded Vancouverite will be advance
restaurant reservations: be sure to book early at your favourite
restaurants.Vancouver’s hottest dining spots will surely be in top form
to show the world that our city is a truly world-class gastronomic
destination. Don’t get left out of the Olympic feeding frenzy.
Vancouverites are fortunate to be able to host such a special event
and to share in this coming together of the world in a celebration of
community and sporting excellence. The 2010 Games are sure to be
an experience of a lifetime.
Pu-erh Vanilla Mint
A Hot Chocolate Alternative
Vanilla Mint Hot Chocolate made with Organic Pu-erh tea is a
twist on traditional Mexican hot chocolate. This recipe creates a
decadent and warming treat perfect for the winter months!
Pu-erh Vanilla Mint (tea) is a full-flavored and balanced blend that
highlights the bold nature of Pu-erh and draws from its ancient
ground cinnamon give this blend a full, creamy body. Its lightly sweet
flavor has accents of espresso and cacao. Tastes great infused like tea
or prepared with milk and honey, like Masala Chai.
Valet Service: Putting You Back In the Fast Lane
64 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
By Rafal Chrzanowski
Service Manager
WWith your busy lifestyle, are you constantly in the fast lane trying to use
your time effectively? At Brian Jessel BMW we try to help you by coming
up with innovative ways to accommodate your needs while maintaining
our commitment to provide you with the ultimate experience. In the spirit
of efficiency and customer service, we are pleased to offer you our “Valet
Service”.
Simply make an appointment with one of our professional appointment
coordinators. They will be happy to take your request for regular service
as well as any additional repairs that your BMW may require. After obtaining
all the information for your scheduled appointment, be sure to specify that
you would like “Valet Service”. You will need to provide a valid Driver’s
License as well as a credit card to reserve a BMW Rental for your
scheduled Valet.
Once you have booked your appointment with the Valet Service, you will receive a confirmation email
as well as a phone call the day before to verify the location and time of your scheduled pick-up.
One of our highly trained Valet drivers will come to your residence, workplace or any other location you
specify to pick up your vehicle.
At pick-up time, the Valet driver will complete a proper walk around on both vehicles to check for any
damage. Proper documentation will be filled out and reviewed at which point a signature will be
required from the client to complete the pick-up. This process only takes ten minutes—one of the
most convenient services we provide. The Valet driver will deliver the vehicle directly to the Service
Department and the Service Advisor. The Service Advisor will place a call to introduce him or herself
to you and will go over any repairs that will be completed during the current appointment. After this
call, the vehicle will be brought into the shop for repairs.
A Service Advisor will keep you up-dated on your vehicle’s progress and they will provide you with
an approximate time of completion for all the repairs. Once the repairs are finished, the Service Advisor
will give you full details of the completed repairs at the same time he or she arranges a return Valet
to your preferred location. At this point, the vehicle will get a complimentary wash and vacuum.
Upon arrival at the drop-off point the client will receive the invoice with a full description of the repairs
and the keys to their BMW. At this point, the Valet Driver will take the BMW Rental back to the Service
Department, while the client is put back into the driver’s seat of their Ultimate Driving Machine.
Not only is the Valet service an innovative approach to getting your car serviced, it is a convenient
way to save time in your busy schedule. I would recommend to all of our clients that they take the
opportunity to try our Valet Service and experience the outstanding service experience at Brian
An Humbling Learning Experience
from Newport Beach, CA
The nature of a business consists of complex tasks and processes which
require time and dedicated staff to learn how to harness the synergy in
order to provide value-added services to customers. Brian Jessel BMW is
constantly learning and developing better processes to further our lead
from our competitors. And one ofthe most efficient ways to learn is through
By John Cheng observing someone who runs an even larger operation than your own.
QMA Project Manager / HR Manager
Being a trail blazer in the Canadian automotive industry, Brian Jessel BMW
does not have the luxury of looking up to someone else’s practices to learn
from them. This is one of the reasons why I was given the mission to go
visit our counterparts in California.
Employee Count
Brian Jessel BMW: 170
An Import Dealership
in California: 500
66 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
Operation California
During several mentoring sessions with Brian Jessel, he described the size of the premium
dealerships in the United States, which is unmatched by any dealer in Canada (including us).
Brian thought that it would be educational for me to visit and observe their operational practices.
One day I was talking to Charles Carvalho, the Director of Fixed Operations at Brian Jessel BMW,
when he suggested that, “We are making history in Canada since nobody has managed a store the
size of ours; therefore, it would be beneficial to visit the dealers in US to observe how they operate.”
Skeptically, I was thinking how someone could be better and larger than us, but taking the
valuable suggestion from Brian and Charles, I decided to make an effort and go visit the
mysterious so-called “Taj Mahal” of import vehicle dealerships in Newport Beach, California.
The Taj Mahal
My visit to these dealerships was very humbling; they are not big, they are humongous! One
dealership, which I was told cost US$75 million to build, was designed with the future in mind.
The future must certainly look bigger and brighter: this dealership is currently using 50 service
bays and has 60 more ready to go at any time. Another dealership I visited employs more people
in their Service Department alone compared to our whole dealership.
The atmosphere of the dealerships was extremely busy but I could see the controlled chaos and
repeated pattern of flow. The dealers did not become defensive after I introduced myself, in fact,
they were happy to provide me with thorough facility tours. I believe this is one of the major
reasons that they are successful—they are not afraid to showcase their processes and facility. By
doing this, ultimately, they also learn from the person who is visiting. Learning goes both ways.
All in all this visit really helped me broaden my thinking, even if there are some advantages that
they have which we cannot control or mimic. For example, the weather: the dealers that I visited
in the Sunny State do not have to worry about washing their inventory everyday. This may seem
like a little detail but it does make a difference for operations.
I took a number of ideas away from these visits and there are three initiatives which we will be
reviewing and applying to aid our current processes. We’re hoping this will help better control
the chaos and harness some of its wonderful synergy.
Initiatives:
1 Use of a remote pager system
Restaurants use them to inform customers when their tables are ready. The use of a remote
pager system is certainly something we thought about a couple years ago, but seeing it in action
at dealership in California confirmed that it would work for us for our Service Department.
2 Use of an electronic paper-less time puncher
The use of the electronic puncher will decrease the resources such as time and money spent
on collecting and purchasing paper-based time tickets. In addition, this will enhance security
since staff will not be able to sign in for others.
3 After-market wheels
One of the dealers in California sells lots of after-market wheels to customize customers’
vehicles. This is a nice value-added practice and we will be looking in to increasing this service.
This field trip certainly opened my eyes and helped me rethink the way we operate. We can use
proven technology to aid our existing processes to increase customer and employee satisfaction
and to improve efficiency. Brian Jessel’s words keep ringing in my ears: “We can never stop
learning. We always learn something everyday!” Visiting larger dealerships has helped me
understand the ways in which we can grow and improve upon the processes that will bring
greater synergy to Brian Jessel BMW. Finally, now I understand and appreciate Brian’s hobby:
visiting and learning from other dealers.
The Joy of the “End of Lease”
68 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
The “End of Lease” does not represent the “End”. We like to see it as
another chapterfor every lease customerthat arrives at our dealership. This
is the perfect opportunity for you to make plans for your next BMW. In this
article, I would like to walk you through some important considerations in the
“End of Lease” process and hopefully we can satisfy all your driving needs.
By Patrick Lee Are you readyfor a change? Is ittime forthe 3 Series Convertible you always
Business Manager
wanted? Or is this the year you will make many trips to Whistler with the
BMWX5 to experience the 2010 Winter Olympics? Whateveryour driving
desire, we are here to make it happen.
Once you have decided to lease a new vehicle you should give yourself ample time to customize
your new BMW to meet your needs. Don’t forget to think about the special options like the Navigation
Package to get you around our growing city, or the multi-media system to further enhance your
travels, and how about the red leather to spice up the interior. Whatever you decide, we will order
your vehicle exactly to your specifications. We will arrange the production and delivery date to align
with the maturity of your existing lease. And if you can’t wait, then take advantage of a BMW Pull
Ahead Program. This program is geared specially to customers with a lease that is maturing within
6 to 9 months. This may be available to get you in your new vehicle without having to worry about the
remaining payments. We will find the best possible solution to make the transition to your new vehicle
simple and easy. All you need to do is say “Yes!”
BMW Financial Services will send to you a “Lease Maturity Package” to help you with the inspection
and the return of your existing BMW (you can expect to receive this six months prior to your maturity
date.) You will need to review a few things just to make sure the overall condition of your vehicle meets
BMW Financial Services requirements. The inspection of your current vehicle can be arranged at
your home, office or right at our dealership. There are a few things to keep in mind:
What is the condition of my vehicle? Are there any damages that I should have repaired?
Have I completed my maintenance and warranty repairs?
Am I within the mileage allowance provided in my lease contract?
Are there any existing insurance claims I need to complete?
Do I have the BMW Wear and Use Protection?
The specialists at our dealership will ensure your current vehicle is ready to go back to BMW Financial
Services. If your vehicle needs repairs, we can arrange to have it repaired at one of our recommended
auto body repair shops to ensure it is up to BMW standards. If you purchased the BMW Wear and
Use Protection, you will be covered for up to $7,500 in body damages and you will not have to worry
about your tires, rims, windshield damage or any missing parts under $200. (See your contract for
specific coverage and details)
We will take care of the rest and prepare your new vehicle. Getting in to your new BMW is as easy as
changing your license plates and pressing the “Start Engine” button!
Keeping Your Leased Vehicle?
“I just love my BMW and I want to keep it!” We hearthis often at Brian Jessel BMW and we are happy
to tell you that keeping your current leased vehicle can be just as simple as getting a new one. If you
wish to purchase your current lease at the pre-determined “residual value,” we can arrange to finance
your purchase with terms up to 5 years. This is also a good time to have your vehicle inspected in our
Service Department and we can ensure it is operating at its optimal performance levels and check that
your maintenance and warranty repairs are up to date. If you plan on keeping the vehicle beyond the
factory warranty expiration, you can purchase an Extended Warranty Package to keep your continued
years of ownership worry free knowing that your mechanical breakdowns and repairs are taken care
of. We also offer a BMW Spa to bring back the showroom shine and to freshen up the interior and
exterior. We can have your vehicle looking just like when you first drove it off our dealership lot.
The decision is simple, if it’s a new vehicle orthe same one you have been driving, we are here to make
the “end of lease” process easy. We would love to provide you with our professional advice to make
your car buying experience as enjoyable and stress free as possible. Our relationship does not need
to end at the “End of the Lease,” we would like to see it continue to grow.
When you own a BMW, there is nothing like the joy of driving one from Brian Jessel BMW!
Another Happy Customer: Harry Kambolis
70 brianJESSEL WINTER 2010
By Rachel Black
A+
One of Vancouver’s top restauranteurs, Harry Kambolis knows all about
excellent service. This is one of things that he appreciates most about
the Brian Jessel BMW experience. “The great cars and the wonderful
service kept me coming back. Brian Jessel BMW makes it so easy.”
The owner of Raincity Grill, Nu and C Restaurant, Harry was one of the first on the Vancouver
restaurant scene to adopt a local and sustainable approach to cuisine. Not only were Mr. Kambolis’
restaurants early adopters, they became a local benchmark for “green” cuisine. In 1992, Harry
Kambolis opened Raincity Grill, which was one of the first restaurants in the city to showcase local
produce and products. This restaurant has played an important role in defining Pacific Northwest
cuisine. To the delight of its faithful diners, Raincity Grill has evolved through the years to reflect the
changing tastes of Vancouver; while growing and building on experience, the cuisine is always fresh
and innovative. Kambolis made further waves in the local food scene when he opened C in 1997.
It was not enough for Kambolis to just serve some of the most enticing and delicious seafood in that
city: C was the founding restaurant in the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Program. Ocean
Wise’s goal is to educate eaters and help them make responsible, sustainable choices. The fish at
C is sourced directly from fishermen and always respects the environmental sensitivity. In 2006, Nu
opened just a few steps from C. This modern dining room features not only one of the best views
in the city but delicious local products that go beyond. A more casual dining experience in
comparison to C, this lively restaurant attracts a hip, young crowd.
As far as the future is concerned, we
can expect more great things from
Harry Kambolis. Perhaps there is
even a new restaurant in the works,
but in the meantime Kambolis has
seen his catering business grow
greatly and plans to expand in this
area. Catering events such as highprofile
fashion events, including the
opening of Holt Renfrew in Calgary,
has certainly brought attention to this
part of Kambolis’ restaurant business. Each time I
Diversification is general a good
investment strategy and the sign of a need a new car
passionate restauranteur: C Brian makes it
restaurant is not only a great place to
eat, they also have a line of gourmet so simple: one
products, which as Kambolis puts it
“started off as a hobby.” In 2010, he is just shows up.
looking to take these products to the
next level—watch for this exciting new
line of gourmet ingredients from C. In
other projects, a new cookbook was recently published for C with recipes that highlight local
and sustainable seafood. A new cookbook is also on the way for Raincity Grill.
“ ”
In 1998, Brian Jessel walked into C and asked Harry Kambolis “If business is so good, why
aren’t you driving a BMW yet?” Shortly after, he bought his first BMW from Brian Jessel BMW
and from that first 328 convertible there was no turning back. Kambolis now owns two Brian
Jessel BMWs. Although he misses driving with the top down a little, Harry describes his M5 as
a 500-horsepowerfamily car. With two young children in the family, Kambolis realised having four
doors was the way to go, but the good part was that he didn’t have to sacrifice having a sports
car. The other family vehicle is an X5—perhaps the ultimate BMW for Vancouver weather and
an active lifestyle. Kambolis explains that both vehicles “make it easyto move lots of stuff and my
family.” That said, he is still waiting for BMW to produce an M5 that is a “green”.
Harry Kambolis sees many similarities between the quality experience he and his staff deliver
at their restaurants and the way in which Brian Jessel makes buying a new BMW an experience
centred on quality and customer service. “Rather than come into the dealership, I prefer to
have my new car delivered.” Kambolis’ busy schedule does not allow him to come out to
Boundary Road to consult with the sales staff and see the latest models but that does not
keep him from finding the perfect vehicles for all his need. “Each time I need a new car Brian
makes it so simple: one just shows up.” Kambolis takes the approach of “never say no” in his
restaurants and this is the same way Brian Jessel looks at selling BMWs: there is always an
innovative solution that makes everyone happy. This is perhaps the key to delivering a quality
experience and having lots of happy customers.
