Reykjavik area <strong>of</strong> 270 km 2 , including an urban area <strong>of</strong> 45 km 2 . The project was started in 1988, and<br />
since then the surrounding municipalities and some <strong>of</strong> their public utilities have also been included in<br />
the <strong>GI</strong>S-system. The buildings and parcels shown in LUKR are connected to corresponding records in<br />
the Building Inspector's database and the National Real Estate Registry, which also has connections<br />
to the National Population Registry, thus enabling municipal employees to make sophisticated queries<br />
concerning demography, value etc. <strong>of</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> interest. The Borgarvefsjá ("City Webview", is an<br />
internet tool intended to allow the general public to obtain maps and to make some <strong>of</strong> the data and<br />
features <strong>of</strong> LUKR and connected databases available. All texts in the Borgarvefsjá are in Icelandic but<br />
some themes and options have been translated into English.<br />
Other <strong>key</strong> <strong>players</strong> include The Icelandic Meteorological Office, (www.vedur.is), Icelandic Institut <strong>of</strong><br />
Natural History (www.ni.is), Landsiminn (www.siminn.is), The National Energy Authority<br />
(www.os.is), and the Public Road Administration, (www.vegagerdin.is)<br />
For more than 14 years Isgraf ehf (www.isgraf.is) has been a reseller for Intergraph and Bentley in<br />
Iceland. In that period systems from these vendors have been implemented at the majority <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Icelandic municipalities and utilities that are using <strong>GI</strong>S. During the last 4 years Isgraf’s main focus has<br />
been on Internet/Intranet solution and in partnership with L<strong>of</strong>tmyndir ehf has successfully implemented<br />
such systems in many sites. Isgraf has from the beginning specialized in <strong>GI</strong>S systems for civil<br />
engineers and has today over 80% <strong>of</strong> the Icelandic market share in DTM and road designing.<br />
Samsyn ehf (www.samsyn.is ) is the <strong>of</strong>ficial distributor <strong>of</strong> <strong>GI</strong>S related s<strong>of</strong>tware from ESRI<br />
(Environmental Systems Research Institute). Samsyn ehf is also a reseller <strong>of</strong> <strong>GI</strong>S data from The<br />
National Land <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> Iceland and Reykjavik <strong>GI</strong>S (LUKR). Among customers <strong>of</strong> Samsyn ehf are<br />
some <strong>of</strong> the largest communities and companies in Iceland, such as the City <strong>of</strong> Reykjavik, Iceland<br />
Telecom, Og Vodafone, The Land Registry <strong>of</strong> Iceland, National Land <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> Iceland and Reykjavik<br />
Energy with its world's largest and most sophisticated geothermal district-heating system, to name just<br />
a few.<br />
Other private <strong>GI</strong>S organisations in Iceland dealing with consultancy, and s<strong>of</strong>tware systems<br />
implementation include Snertill, www.snertill.is/eng (Autodesk), Landmat, www.landmat.com (mobile<br />
services) , and Trackwell, www.trackwell.com (LBS).<br />
