MANU FACTUM EST
„Von Hand gefertigt“
„Hand made“
The “Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten” was
founded in 1718, making it the second-oldest in
Europe.
The “white gold” from Vienna has been lovingly
moulded and shaped, glazed and painted by hand
ever since; therefore every single piece of finest
Augarten is unique.
What’s more, our designs and artistic values reflect
our collaboration with well-known artists through
the generations. This tradition is perpetuated to this
day through our work with recognised designers.
Augarten is famous among leading manufactories
for the whiteness of its porcelain, its fine and
delicate craftsmanship and its exquisite painting.

MANU FACTUM EST
The production process
From raw material to unique finished article.
So delicate and yet so robust – the secret of how to make porcelain eluded the western world for a long time.
Discovering the formula certainly required some intuition from the alchemists. Yet making the finest porcelain
requires just three “ingredients”
FELDSPAR, QUARTZ, AND KAOLIN
The secret lies in getting the proportions right! Once the mix has been prepared, it can be employed immediately to
make the most beautiful shapes. If the piece is to be thrown on the wheel, the paste has to be allowed to mature until
it achieves the ideal consistency. Round and free-form shapes are created by hand on the wheel and are then dried.
Plaster moulds are required to make the various parts for each piece of porcelain. Hollow shapes and figurines are
cast and then allowed to dry before being removed from the mould. A single figure can consist of anything up to 70
separate parts that are put – or rather stuck – together and finished in a time-consuming manual process. The same
porcelain paste is used to make the supports that hold the piece of porcelain in the required shape during firing.
Casting Taking out of the shape The individual pieces
Sharpening Cleaning The original
Glazing The art of painting Signing
Next, the tricky firing process begins. The first firing is known as biscuit firing, and takes place at 930° C. It causes
the material to harden but its surface remains porous. Next it is time to give the raw porcelain its “identity”. Each
piece is checked and cleaned and then marked with the signature striped shield prior to glazing. The shield is the coat
of arms of the Babenberg family, and has been the trademark of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory since 1744.
Once the glazing has been applied by hand, the porcelain gets its second or main firing. This takes place at a
temperature of 1380° C, and gives the porcelain almost the same compressive strength as steel. The porcelain now
has a smooth, glazed surface, which is just perfect for detailed decoration using a quill pen or brush. Depending on
the pattern and the number of colours, there can be up to six intermediate firings. Finally, gilt edges or decoration for
the relevant pattern are painted on. Gold dust mixed with clove oil is applied to the porcelain and the piece is fired
again to volatise the fugitive components so that 24-carat gold is all that remains. It is then polished with agate or
sea sand. The Vienna manufactory is well known among connoisseurs for the purity, colour and intensity of the gold.
Every Augarten piece is thus the product of the enormous patience and creativity of craftsmen who are true experts
in their field.

Join us on a journey into the richly diverse and fascinating world of porcelain figures. Our time span
stretches from the very beginnings of the Manufactory in 1718 right up to the Art Deco period.
It is rare to find a manufactory which can reflect the path of history across the centuries with such
subtlety and skill.
Themes
Alongside Vally Wieselthier, mention is also made of Ida Schwetz-Lehmann and Mathilde Szendrö-Jaksch,
designers who, for example, dominated in the field of typically charming Art Deco figures. Schwetz-
Lehmann produced models of fashionably-dressed young ladies while, in 1927, Jaksch created an image of
a famous dancer of the time, Tilly Losch, in her role as “Schlagobers” in the ballet of the same name by
Richard Strauss.
Objects created by the Manufactory were received with a storm of enthusiasm at the World Fair in Paris in
1929. In addition to designs by Walter Bosse, works by Franz von Zülow and the ceramic artists of the
“Wiener Werkstätte” (Vienna Workshops) Dina Kuhn, Hertha Bucher and Vally Wieselthier were also on
show – these were devoted particularly to the designs of sculptures at Augarten.
Some of the first figural works created after the Paris exhibition included models by Albin Döbrich and
Karin Sakellarious – Courbette, Piaffe and Levade with Rider were produced as examples of the haute
école school of riding long established at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. These unmistakeable
representations of the world-famous horses and riders of the Spanish Riding School epitomize the
perfection of supreme craftsmanship. A Lippizaner like this consists of no fewer than 70 separate parts.
And let’s not forget the countless animal figures, both large and small, such as the finely detailed dogs,
playful cats and fabulously plumaged birds from both familiar and more exotic climes.
The repertoire also came to include figures in traditional costume, religious figures and statuettes of
musicians Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert and Mozart. Most of the work was designed by the renowned
artists Breideneichen, Jesser, Rottenberg and Berceviczy.
The range of porcelain figures received an injection of humour with “grotesques” produced to designs by
Walter Bosse or animals by Karin Jarl. Contemporaries very much valued Walter Bosse’s talent for
developing amusing and droll ideas.
Cooperation with internationally renowned contemporary artists and designers is also a key factor in the
production of new models and decorations. One example is the work of Arik Brauer who is responsible for
the production of a fantastical chess game.
Augarten Artists
Robert Ullmann, 1903-1966
The Austrian sculptur created various
embodiments of human and animals for the
Viennese porcelain manufactory Augarten.
Among figurines as „Fighting Horese“,
„Group of stags“ and other animals he
designed a female figure in 1936 „Susanna“,
also known as „Nude by Ullmann “.
Michael Powolny, 1871-1954
This ceramist and sculptor was one of the
most important representatives of Austrian
ceramists at the beginning of the 20 st
century. Among his works we find the „Ara“
and the graceful figure of “Daphne”.
Walter Bosse, 1904 – 1979
His creations still are evidence of his
inmmense artistic esprit and sparkle of
fancy ideas. Objects, designed by Walter
Bosse are definitely a highlight of applied
arts in Austria. The outstanding
„Grotesques“ – 4 in number – were designed
1925 for the manufactory Augarten.
Eduard Liebscher
Professor Liebscher designed the figure
„Kissing of hand“ 1936 for Augarten and
personally monitored the production of the
first pieces.
Already 1935 he had developped two
marvellous bookrest which are inherent
part of the figurine production since then.
Augarten Artists
Mathilde Jaksch, 1899
She created capricious female dancers and actresses after
famous models, such as the well known Riki Raab. There
were also genre-like figural groups (“Young Love”, “Girl with
a Doll”, “Drunken Man Lying on a Cactus” and statuettes
with the charm of the Far East (Chinese and Malayan
figurines). Still in production today are “Whipped Cream”
(the dancer, Tilly Losch), “Riki Raab”, the lady in crinolines
and the cavalier, “Moor”, “Cockatoo”, “Phantom” and the
chess set.
Vally Wieselthier, 1895-1945
Rudolf von Delius wrote about her enthusiastically in the
publication, „Neue Keramik“ (1926-27): “She possesses that
charm peculiar to a pampered, almost overripe culture; all
the senses approach playfulness, the nerves vibrate all the
way to the fingertips and there is a throbbing of
recklessness and joy of extravagance in these figurines that
excites, transports, enchants us.”
For the Augarten manufactory she created the two models,
“Lady with Monkey” and “Romance”, and the allegory,
“Vanity”, in 1925, a charming figural group of the highest
quality, which is still in production.
Hertha Bucher, 1898 – 1960
The delicate clock, “Cityscape”, was shown at the Paris Arts
and Crafts Exhibition in 1925 and received a gold medal.
Other well known designs for Augarten are “Bacchantes”,
“Reclining Girl” (a paper weight), lampsands, “Cherubim”
and the vase, “Sqirrels and Trees”, whose decoration in
under glaze blue, over glaze enamels and gilt have made it
one of the artist’s most famous works.
Ida Schwetz-Lehmann, 1883 - 1971
Her designs are rooted in allegorical, religious and mythical
realms and demand the highest degree of still from the
porcelain modeller and painter.
Among this artist’s best known creations are “The First
Roses”, “Lady with a Parrot”, “Dancer”, “Skier”, “Bust of a
Girl”, “Madonna with Halo”. Today such figurines as “Girl in
a Storm”, “Cello Player”, “Madonna”, and “Bust of an
Angel” are still being produced.
