Summer Sessions. The program comprises live music every evening through
August 15 in a variety of venues across the island

THE CHRISTOPHER AND CARL GUSTAF
GET FIVE STARS
Classified until now as four-star
luxury hotels, both the Christopher
and Carl Gustaf have added a fifth
star. The Collectivity’s executive
committee agreed to the request by
these two hotels, and awarded their
extra stars during a meeting on
July 6, after receiving a thumbs up
from the territorial tourism commission
on June 15. The Christopher
and Carl Gustaf join Le Toiny
and Isle de France, which received
their fifth stars last March, in the
pantheon of top-rated hotels in
Saint Barthélemy.
The new five-star rating in Saint-
Barthélemy is the result of the
Novelli law adopted in France in
2009, and amendments made to the
local tourism code. Institutionally,

the territorial tourism commission
is in charge of awarded the hotels’
stars. “We are very proud,” enthuses
Marion Fayard, director of the
Carl Gustaf. “This fifth star represented
a huge challenge for us. We
worked very hard to obtain it.” For
Pierre-Alexandre Maillard, manager
of thr Christopher, “The winning
of this fifth star is the successful
realization of the major investments
made over the past three
years by the Pitch Promotion
group.” The Pointe Milou hotel
recently renovated all of its rooms,
as well as its two restaurants, the
swimming pool, and pool deck. It
has also added a seaside spa and
fitness room, plus four new suites.
“This fifth star is also great encouragement
for the staff to continue to
guarantee that the hotel meets with
the success it deserves,” adds
Maillard.

ST BARTH SUMMER SESSIONS:
MUSIC EVERYWHERE!
Once again this year, the association
St Barth Rocks has organized
the St Barth Summer Sessions, an
eclectic music festival with artists
from around the world. From
August 4-15, the stars on the festival
roster include DJs from the German
collective Jazzanova, as well
as Anduze, Arturo Rodriguez,
David H, Tom Howie, and Jimmy
Vallance (who has a record coming
out on the label, Get Physical), plus
Josh Logan, Ryan Fardy, Adam
Lasher Band, Alex Merrell, Yo-One
Sutter, Eitch from New York, and
representatives of the Brazilian
EITCH
New York singer Eitch (pronounced
H) has a style evoking that of
Björk: a unique universe that
playfully fuses a hybrid of vocally
driven alternative music. Her
album, “Everything, Nothing,”
follows an electro-pop vein with
certain songs that recall popular
Canadian singer Grimes. But
Eitch brings a totally personal
style to her music. A special
treat!
ANDUZE
Originally from the American
Virgin Islands, Anduze is a soul
singer following in the footsteps
of such stars as Marvin Gaye,
Curtis Mayfield, or Otis Redding.
Anduze is accompanied on
scene with Aberto Pra Balanço
and Alvaro Kapaz.
Every night there will be a
concert at La Plage, while
other events are scheduled
at various hotels that are
participating in the St Barth
Summer Sessions: Christopher
Hotel, Le Sereno, Taiwana,
Isle de France, and

Route des Boucaniers,

EMILY ELBERT
Steeped in folk music that
evokes the open plains of her
native Texas, 23 year-old Emily
Elbert started singing, compo-
sing, and playing the guitar at
the age of 14. She has performed
around the world, and her latest
album, “Alive, In Love,” came
out last February.
JAZZANOVA
One of the highlights of the program:
known for their “nu-jazz,”
the German DJs from the elec-
tive collective, Jazzanova, have
spent over 15 years mixing,
remixing, and producing for the
independent labels, Compost
Records and Sonar Kollektiv,
with their compelling compositions
shaping the musical scene
on an international basis. Not to

Canadian-born Tom
Howie is a guitarist and
songwriter in his early
20s, whose soaring
vocals and songwriting
talents have drawn comparisons
to Jeff Buckley
and Thom Yorke. Last
November, he released
his third solo album, The
Right and Wrong of
Everything, mixed by
producer Ashwin Sood.
Howie is also a graduate
of the Berklee College of
Music, and currently
lives in New York City.
RYAN FARDY
Ryan has played to
crowds all over New
England and the United
States from Las Vegas to
California and Florida,
as well as Canada. He
has opened for the
legendary Chaka Khan,
Leon Russell, Edgar
Winter, Mountain,
Snoop Dogg, Rick Derringer,
Hoobastank, and
others. A graduate of
the Berklee College of
Music, he is a BMI
recording artist.
ADAM LASHER BAND
Adam Lasher is a fabulous
guitar player… who
happens to also be the
nephew of Carlos Santana!
His talent sets him
apart from the other
musicians of his generation
in Los Angeles,
where he often performs.

5TH EDITION OF SAINT BARTH TENNIS CLUB
OPEN: YOUR SERVE!
The tennis courts in
Saint Jean host the
action of the 5th Edition
of Saint Barth Tennis
Club Open, August 4-
15, with as many as 100
players expected. “We
are hoping for participation
by residents as well
as our friends who are
visiting the island during
their summer vacation,”
notes Yves
Lacoste, sports director
of the SBTC. This year
there will be several top
players, both men and
women, from France
and Guadeloupe on the
roster. Tournament participants
will play in six
categories: men’s singles,
women’s singles,
under 15 years, veterans,
men’s doubles, and
mixed doubles. The
pools will be selected
on Saturday, August 19
at the tennis clubhouse
in St Jean. The men’s
Who is the most beautiful
young lady in Saint
Barthélemy? That will be
decided during a gala
soirée on Saturday,
August 11 in Gustavia,
with the election of Miss
Saint Barth 2012-2013.
Organized by the Miss
Saint Barth Association,
whose president is
Stéphane Lanson, this
soiree takes place on the
Quai Général de Gaulle.
Seven candidates will
appear in various outfits,
on a stage set up for the
occasion, with a jury
judging their style, their
smiles, and even their
elocution. The lucky
young lady elected on
August 11 will compete
in the next Miss Prestige
singles final will take
place on Wednesday,
August 15, followed by
the awards ceremony.
This is an official tournament,
which means
that all players must
belong to a tennis club
and provide a medical
certificate.

Fontenay, a famous model

boat to sail on, or have a boat
and need crew for a regatta?
Now you can turn to the Lil’E
Saint Barth Sailing School to
help meet your needs. “You
can sail alone for your pleasure.
But to participate in a
regatta, you need a real crew.
And often enough, you can be
short a few sailors. Or after the
end of the regatta that you find
out there were people who
would have liked to participate,
but they didn’t let you know,”
explains Mowgli Fox, director
of the Lil’E Saint Barth Sailing
School. Fox’s new program,
which also exists elsewhere,
allows you to post advance
notice of your needs, as a sailor
or a skipper, via the website:

“Bourse aux équipiers.” Those
who are looking to sail on a boat
can post their qualifications and
any race wins, as well as what
regattas they are interested in
and the dates they are available,
from actual races to casual sailing,
and the position they hold,
from helmsman to tactician.
“The program is also open to
beginners,” adds Fox. “If you
are a novice, there is always a
chance to earn your sea legs,”
