HELLO JAGUAR LOVERS!
As Jaguar Minnesota’s new president, I’d like to
offi cially welcome you back for 2006. Actually, the
club has been quite busy already this winter hosting
a lot of fun events, and there’s more to come.
Special thanks should go to Gene and Jana Berghoff
who hosted a tremendous holiday party in January.
Every year this event keeps on getting better and
better. Also thanks to those who hosted the various
events so far. If not already, you should soon have a
hardcopy of the Jaguar Club membership directory
mailed to your home. Th is directory also has a listing
of the events for the year. Remember though, the
offi cial site of the clubs activities is on the web at
www.JaguarMinnesota.org.
Th is year your hard working Board of Directors is
continuing to off er all of the traditional Jaguar events
that we have enjoyed in the past, plus a few more
twists. Dale Martin is organizing a St. Croix Valley
“Spring Awakening” Drive on April 29th. We will
also be travelling to DesMoines Iowa on May 6 to
help a fl edging new Jaguar Club put on its fi rst car
show. George Arthur will be organizing a combined
Jaguar/Austin Healey drive on October 7th. In addition,
the Gullicksons will be having a Mexican Fiesta
on July 29th.
Another important project underway is Jaguar
Minnesota’s plan to sponsor Rendezvous ’07 in
Grand Rapids, MN. George Arthur has kindly volunteered
to head this up. I would encourage you all
to consider taking a trip up north this June 15-18 to
take in Rendezvous ’06. We will need many volunteers
for Rendezvous ’07, so attending this year will
give you an idea of what would be involved and what
will be needed to run a successful Rendezvous ’07.
In the communications area, we are continuing the
evolution to electronic means in reaching the membership.
Eff ective now, the bulk of our Quarterly
Newsletters will be sent out in electronic form. Th is
will help the club tremendously in both labor hours
and dollars. Plus, when you access this Quarterly
Newsletter on the website, you can see it in full color!
When you see Dick Jones, please thank him for
all the work he has done on website development.
So…as you are checking out the website take a look
at the Calendar of Events. Th ere is a lot of stuff to
do. Everyone is really busy so scheduling is very important.
How about scheduling a few more Jaguar
events this year???? I personally guarantee that you
will enjoy yourself.
In closing, I would like to off er a special thanks to
all those who happily give their time to make the club
work. Every Board member and volunteer should
be thanked.

Lee and Claire were both very involved

Jaguar Pub Night at The Glockenspiel
ON JANUARY 18 th we started the first of
this year’s winter “Jaguar Pub Nights” at
the Glockenspiel Restaurant in St. Paul.
The “Glock” is a German restaurant serving
recipes brought back from Bavaria
during the owner’s military service. Not
only the food but also the beers were great.
The high ceilings, wall murals, wooden
benches, lederhosen clad strolling accordion
player and period dressed servers all
added to the fun atmosphere.
Those in attendance were Tom Humphrys,
Lee Bowman, Glenn & Gwen Nickleski,
Jim Easton, Dale Martin, Mel and Connie
Bourne, Tibor and Kathy Gallo, Dick
Krentz, and Bill Hohn.
Next time you see Dick Krentz ask him
about his XKR upgrade. Tom Humphrys
is also interested if someone might have
some information and knowledge on XJS
performance enhancing.
Unfortunately, the writer left his camera
on the nightstand and no photographs
were taken that night. So, you will just
have to visit the Glockenspiel in person to
experience the “Munich Beer Hall” in
St. Paul.

“Get-a-Life” Car Advice…
I have actually seen these two “hints” in articles in the last two months:
“…and, also use Rain-X on your windshield
to help increase your gas mileage.”
And the savings would be more than the cost of the Rain-X??
(A comment not sanctioned by the product maker, I hope).
“When storing your car put it up on blocks to get the tires off the ground,
(OK so far)…then rotate the wheels every so often”.
I won’t comment. There might be some remote value to doing this that will justify all
the cold air you let into the house just going out into the garage to do it.

TECH SESSION AT DOWNTOWN JAGUAR February 11th, 2006
Despite a chilly Saturday morning, 25 members
arrived at Downtown Jaguar to enjoy yet
another session ably presented by Paul Palan.
After leading us through details of the exciting
new 2007 XK convertible, we enjoyed a classroom
discussion on those critical points to
consider when purchasing late model
used Jaguars.
This was followed by an informative hands-
on comparison of all the recent Jaguar
models. Anyone considering the purchase
of one of these luxurious cars benefi ted greatly
and understood why this dealership should be
their fi rst and last stop.
Probably what happens when a bonnet
unexpectedly descends.
Not that you should ever have to do it, but Paul
shows us the proper way to open the bonnet on
a new(ish) Jaguar.
The group upheld our tradition of calorie
abandonment by consuming fi ve dozen
assorted donuts.

January 28 th dawned impressively, just like the thirty
straight early spring-like days we experienced since
winter offi cially started. One of life’s small favors in
my eyes.
Just a perfect morning to wander down to Horace
and Donna Beale’s in the lovely little town of Afton…
to eat my way through another Jaguar tech session.
Upon arrival, new family member Bentley stormed
out to greet us. Bentley is Horace and Donna’s perpetual
motion yellow lab pup. A Marley protégée
no doubt.
After throwing the stick a few hundred times we
headed for the garage, the one Horace has just
updated with the help of sons David and Brian.
Very impressive job!
All the normal garage amenities, right down to the
home theatre system … now showing … Alain de
Cadenet driving various Jaguar ballistae while off ering
his usual brand of wry commentary.
Down to business. Horace’s ‘66 Series 1 has been literally
gulping brake fl uid for … well, for about ever.
Not leaking it … drinking it! He had the master
cylinder apart. Good start we thought.
Naturally, all stood around eating, bantering, and
looking at the pieces for an hour or so. Donna had
laid on a great selection of incredible edibles not the
least of which was warm scones with jam and clotted
cream. Pretty darn nice.
I wanted Horace to explain some of the technical
bits that I should have learned. However, he is a busy
boy and it may be the next issue before you fi nd out
where all that pinkish oil went.
Suffi ce to say we all enjoyed ourselves and appreciate
the extra eff ort our hosts put forth.

May 21st The always incredible Intermarque Car Show and Banquet at the Radisson
in Plymouth. Should be at least 100 interesting cars, many awards, chitchat, great food
and good short speeches. The show is free (11 am - 3 pm), and their great buffet at $16
all in (3 pm - 5 pm). Bring your Jaguar for goodness sake! Show it!
June 3rd Who else but Horace and Donna Beale to put on a “Sweetheart Luncheon”
drive?! Always a winner. Stay tuned.

Jaguar Club Annual Holiday Dinner
THE EVENING BEGAN with a lovely and warm
greeting by our gracious hosts, Gene and Jana Berghoff.
Gene and Jana were very brave hosting this event, as
they had only moved into their beautiful home around
Thanksgiving.
A guided tour began from the door greeters. The wine
steward, Dale Martin, in the gourmet kitchen area was
the next stop. All headed up by Mike and Gloria Lynch
and attended by their many diligent helpers. Then on to
the spotless, heated garage to see The Berghoff ’s lovely
150 and E-type. Then down a level for a long drool over
the German, Japanese and British motorcycle collection
(brings back memories of the old country!).
The downstairs bar was busy all night.
Barb Martin was the Publican.
January 7 th , 2006
Next stop was the lower level bar, where our attentive
bartender did a resplendent job of serving English lagers
and ales of various forms straight from the bottle or a
“tarts” glass if you preferred (that’s a straight glass
without a handle that ladies usually drink from in
pubs in England).
Dinner was served buffet style, with some sixty diners
enjoying a lovely meal and fantastic desserts partly
catered but mostly supplied by various club members.
My personal favorite was the Plum Pudding.
Biker’s Delight! Cars evidently aren’t
Gene’s only obsession.

After dinner, Dick Jones gave a tearful and touching
farewell speech and handed over the various gavels to
the new 2006 Club President, Glenn Nickleski. Dick’s
final duty was the presentation of the “Meritorious
Service” award to George and Pam Arthur, and the highly
coveted “Lifetime Membership” awarded to Horace and
Donna Beale. Everyone acclaimed these well deserved.
A special welcome was also extended to our newest
members, Connie and Mel Bourne. A brief but
informative speech by Glenn followed. All had a
very pleasant evening.
I am told the party ended around 3AM. The only disparaging
moment of the evening came as we departed the
Berghoff ’s home and found all the “winter beaters” in the
drive and on the street. Not a bad winter … yet … but
certainly not vintage Jaguar weather.

6 th ANNUAL GO-KART CHALLENGE!
On Saturday, March 25 th Dave Meek Productions
proudly presented another brilliant Go-
Kart Challenge, our club’s major contribution
to a great calendar of Intermarque events!
A “challenge” you say? Well certainly. Clubs
represented were our Jaguar Club, the BMW
boys, Triumph, Lotus, Austin-Healey, Ferrari
and … Citroen.
Team Bowman: Kelly, Kim, Lee and Jordan.
We had the strongest contingent with
fourteen participants. Dave himself, Glenn
Nickleski, Mark Orfi eld and his son
Matthias; Lee Bowman did not drive but
he brought his two daughters who certainly
did … Kelly, and Kim who brought her bf
Jordan; ‘Chumley’ Buchen, Richard Voyles,
Neil Schoenheider, Karl Schwappach, Gene
Al Cady can

As expected it was all well organized with lots
of track time. Mike Lynch acted as master-atarms
and Elaine Brahms kept the records with
moral support from John.
The Buffalo Tap for lunch and award presentations
was the next stop. As expected the
testosterone charged BMW Charlies took top
honors again this year with our club coming in
4th. We had the best looking drivers, so who
cares which club was fastest.
Our top eliminators, in no particular order, were
Richard Voyles, Matthias Orfi eld and David
Meek. Well done everyone.

On March 15 th about a dozen intrepid Jaguar Club
members braved the double threat of the Ides of March
and an impending snowstorm to enjoy Pub Night.
The event was hosted by Daniel and Ann Buchen at
O’Gara’s Bar & Grill in St Paul. In O’Gara’s fine Irish
tradition, each day in the week before St Patrick’s Day is
celebrated with a return to 1941 prices on a selected menu
item. Our pub night had to start forty-five minutes later
than usual to accommodate the crowds that show up for
the specials.
Those who arrived before 7 pm enjoyed Irish stew with
cole slaw and a dinner roll for $2. From 7-8 pm Nickel
Beers! Seven-ounce beers for 5 cents each were consumed
by the hundreds (though only a respectable portion of
these went to our dignified Jag Club members).
From 7:45 until about 10 pm we took over the Brew Pub
Room. We sampled O’Gara’s fine selection of beers brewed
on site. By then the measure was the traditional British
pint, but of course we were always focused on the bouquet
and finish of each variety of brew.
Stories of cars and adventures past were shared. Upcoming
events and the driving season were anticipated. As the
snow began to accumulate we all left for our respective
homes after a pleasant evening’s cheer.

Mingus Big Band Scores Big with Jaguar Club

TWENTY-SEVEN JAGUAR JAZZNUTS
celebrated a very special night out at the Dakota
Jazz Club and Restaurant in Minneapolis on February
19th. First, we enjoyed an excellent dinner
together and then a ninety-minute set of nonstop
music performed by the 14-piece Mingus Big Band.
The band was brilliant: each musician
was an accomplished soloist and, as a group,
flawlessly executed the very difficult music of
the late composer and bassist, Charles Mingus.
No wonder they were nominated for the “Best
Large Jazz Ensemble” Grammy!
But what the heck does listening to live contemporary
jazz music have to do with cars, you may
ask? Well, apparently there is a connection, judging
from the interest members have shown in this event,
now in its second year of popularity. My theory is
that the two have certain things in common that
have something to do with motion, style, freedom,
movement, and being a part of something that’s just
inherently hip and sexy.
