John Lass, SVP Strategy and Business Development, CUNA
The credit union system has generally relied on organic growth
and consolidation to achieve economies of scale. Collaboration
represents an alternative approach for achieving the scale
needed to compete in today's challenging environment. John
Lass will examine how credit unions can benefi t from collaboration,
what some of the hallmarks of successful collaboration are
and what pitfalls can cause collaborative efforts to go wrong.
Managing Risk in Today's Challenging Times
Tim Harrington, President, TEAM Resources
Montego A
In today's challenging business environment, there are risks
that, unless successfully managed, will impact your credit
union's ability to provide excellent service. In addition, the
National Credit Union Association (NCUA) has indicated it will
increase its emphasis on risk management. Harrington will
explore ways for identify, analyze, respond to, and monitor risks.
Also, he will provide an overview of Enterprise Risk Management
Your Credit Union's Largest Growth Opportunity—
Hispanics!
Miriam De Dios, CEO, Coopera Consulting
Montego B
By the year 2050, one out of three U.S. residents will be
Hispanic. Currently, Hispanics make up more than 38 percent
of California's population and more than 27 percent of
Nevada's population. With one out of two Hispanics being
unbanked or underserved, these demographics point to a
market opportunity for credit unions. Join us as we discuss
the economic and demographic fi ndings of Coopera's
Hispanic Opportunity Report for California and Nevada, and
unique growth opportunities for credit unions. In addition,
we will highlight a few case studies of Hispanic outreach
efforts by California and Nevada credit unions.
Collaboration within the Credit Union System: Part Two
John Lass, SVP, Strategy and Business Development, CUNA
Mutual Group
Montego C
In his second session, John builds on the collaboration
theme by examining real-time case studies to demonstrate
how organizations leverage collaboration to achieve
increased economies of scale and improved competitiveness.
Case studies will cover credit unions both inside and
outside the U.S., as well as several companies outside
A Brave New World: Australia's
Credit Union 'Banks'
Louise Petschler, CEO, Abacus
Montego DE
Like credit unions everywhere, Australia's credit unions are challenged
by differentiating themselves from banks while raising
consumer awareness. Petschler, CEO of Abacus (which represents
credit unions and other mutual organizations in Australia), will
speak about recent developments in her country, where credit
banks. Petschler will discuss the "even playing fi eld" environment,
We have designed note pages scattered throughout this book to help you to produce
more creative takeaways from the information you receive at this conference. We hope
they help you get thinking about the information and how you could apply it at your
credit union!
Loony Bin— ese ideas are crazy
and outrageous. If you could make
them work, wow! Keep thinking
about how they could become
possible!
Recycle Bin—You have had these
ideas before, but forgotten them.
ese could also be ideas you don’t
need, but maybe someone else at
your credit union could use them!
Hot Bin—Turn up the
heat on your hot ideas.
Focus on them today!
Chill Bin— ese are good
ideas that you can’t use
right now. Put them on ice
until you need them.
42
Notes
Before you leave the
meeting (maybe during
the plane ride home),
schedule a quiet time
with your notes and
separate your ideas
into the categories to
the left.
Review all the ideas
you could do and look
for the ones that are
most likely to provide a
signifi cant payoff and
are doable with your
current resources.
Then get to work and
refi ne and implement
those ideas!
You’ll probably do
better if you fi nd a
partner and agree
to keep each other
accountable for action.
