Tresco inspired again with
its dramatic low winter light
creating long shadows on
the deserted beaches. The
sea raged, the sun shone
and the heavens opened,
making for a very diverse
and productive stay.

coconut furze, moon

wild flowers and mica sand.
I must give them pride of
place this year, when I'm
back home.

For Amanda this collection
is about enjoying the
process of painting and
interacting with the
landscape. Using a variety
of materials, oils, sand and
handmade paper she has
interpreted the Scillies in a
creative way.
The vivid colours of the sea
and sky and rich texture of
the plants have been as
always an inspiration and
has given Amanda the
chance to develop in her
paintings a tapestry of
colour and quality of light
allowing the viewer a
chance to get involved with
the landscape.

This has been one of the
best trips yet, a renewed
appreciation for the simple
things.

Each time I visit Tresco, I
am reminded that humans
are entirely at the mercy of
the elements.
I sat on a yellow, lichen
covered rock for three
hours, mesmerised by the
waves crashing, the wind
rushing through the
grasses and the erratic heat
of the sun as it found blue
spaces between the cloud.
I felt vulnerable and it was
wonderful.

I have spent three days
trying to write this. It’s daft
because it’s something I’ve
done many times – but it’s
getting harder to put my
feelings about these
amazing Islands into words.
As soon as I’m back from a
trip I’m scheming how on
earth I can manage
another! It may be
something to do with the
intensity of looking -
drawing in the landscape is
a kind of deep seeing – it
cements things, imprints
them so they become part
of you. I have 100s of
drawings, photographs and
studies from my visits.
I don’t really need them.
They kick start me, inspire
me to make the first marks
– but then I’m off. It’s all in
my head.

The weather can change
rapidly here and contrary to
popular belief the sky isn't
always blue in Scilly. This
climate produces some
spectacular skies. I have
chosen to concentrate this
series of paintings on our
forever changing skies and
subsequent affect on our
landscape.
There is something
overwhelming about the
uninterrupted view we have
of our sky that gives you a
sense of freedom and
openness.
I hope this comes across in
my paintings.

The moment I step from the
helicopter onto Tresco’s soil
time is suspended, I have
never been away. As I ride
on the tractor trailer to the
artist’s chalet I begin to
wonder about the paintings
which will emerge in the
days ahead. Some ideas
creep up unsuspected,
slowly intruding upon the
artist’s inner eye.
Sometimes I work in my
studio in a state of
frustration, knowing that
the painting is not achieving
its full potential. Often it
takes time to emerge then I
suddenly capture its
essence recalling a memory
of something I had always
wanted to say.
This creative process can
only flower when the mind
is set free from all stress
and flies like one of Tresco’s
oystercatchers free and
wild in the sky.

Over the years of visiting
the Scilly Isles I've become
more interested in the
geography and topography
features of the islands
when painting, especially
Tresco and Bryher.
I think these features
combined with the unique
atmosphere of the place
are evident in my work in
this year's show.
