In a world where everything is interconnected, small grants to the right people and causes have big impact. Your support helps grassroots<br />
groups to fight harder for the environment, human rights, and social justice.<br />
As I visited several rural Kenyan villages last summer, I saw a landscape that spanned time. Hot sun beat down on hut roofs with solar<br />
panels. Cisterns collected rainwater for drinking and irrigation. Native, drought-resistant crops had been planted in raised kitchen gardens.<br />
Communities were returning to traditional agricultural practices that will provide food security in an uncertain climate future.<br />
Village women greeted us with hope, dancing and singing, sharing stories of how recent trainings—part of a project funded by <strong>Global</strong><br />
<strong>Greengrants</strong> <strong>Fund</strong>—had improved their lives. One small grant had addressed climate change, energy, food sustainability, and water scarcity.<br />
Local women integrated new technology with traditional wisdom to create systemic change where they lived.<br />
In spite of a grim, worldwide economic recession, <strong>Global</strong> <strong>Greengrants</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> held its course in <strong>2010</strong> and <strong>2011</strong>. We are extremely grateful to<br />
our loyal and new donors who invested in grassroots environmental work in the <strong>Global</strong> South. We are thankful to the dedicated advisors<br />
who channeled funding to communities such as those mentioned above and throughout this annual report. Together, you have turned<br />
philanthropy upside down.<br />
In what follows, we focus on a handful of groups that our grants have<br />
supported. Each spread features connections between two specific issues<br />
and tells a story of impact from the local to the global scale.<br />

Saving endangered species<br />
enables indigenous<br />
communities to thrive<br />
Six of the world’s seven species of<br />
marine turtles live around Papua New<br />
Guinea. The country is one of the most<br />
culturally diverse places on Earth, with<br />
more than 850 languages spoken. Both<br />
the turtles and the indigenous cultures<br />
are threatened.<br />
The leatherback sea turtle is<br />
endangered. Indigenous leaders<br />
recognized that the practice of<br />
harvesting leatherback eggs for food<br />
contributed to the turtle’s decline<br />
in numbers. They established an<br />
organization to work with local villages<br />
to change this practice.<br />
As the organization brought<br />
communities together to develop plans<br />
for conservation, their environmental<br />
efforts had a ripple effect. They began<br />
to see and address social needs,<br />
including community development<br />
and income generation. The group<br />
soon took on other challenges, such as<br />
advocating against deep-sea mining<br />
off their coast.<br />
What began as protecting an<br />
endangered species has since become a<br />
broad effort to create more prosperous<br />
indigenous communities along the<br />
north coast of Papua New Guinea.<br />
LOCAL ACTION to protect<br />
our planet and its people<br />
As our planet’s cultural and biological<br />
diversity decline at rapid rates, local<br />
people are taking action to reverse<br />
this trend.<br />
Often when indigenous rights are<br />
threatened, so are natural resources.<br />
<strong>Global</strong> <strong>Greengrants</strong> <strong>Fund</strong> channels<br />
grants to groups that are raising<br />
indigenous voices and encouraging<br />
community-led conservation.<br />
Our grants strengthen indigenous<br />
movements and help them assert their<br />
rights and views in project and policy<br />
development. To protect biodiversity,<br />
our grantees are monitoring illegal<br />
poaching, changing destructive<br />
consumption habits, and safeguarding<br />
threatened habitats.<br />

The organization protects the marine life in the<br />
Bismarck and Solomon Seas and the rights of<br />
indigenous communities in the region.<br />
Biodiversity Indigenous Rights<br />
A recent study found<br />
that a marine reserve<br />
created by a Mexican<br />
grantee has seen a<br />
460% increase in the<br />
number of fish.<br />
Worldwide, 82<br />
indigenous tribes used<br />
our small grants last<br />
year to lead projects for<br />
environmental health<br />
and justice.
From the backyard to<br />
parliament, making food<br />
and the environment safer<br />
Malabika Datta Saha is a young activist<br />
from West Bengal—a region afflicted<br />
with poverty and hunger. She gathered<br />
women from a small tribal community<br />
to improve food security through<br />
organic farming. They planted ten<br />
small gardens to grow healthy foods,<br />
including spinach and eggplant.<br />
Across India, a national organization<br />
led a campaign to raise awareness<br />
among farmers, consumers, and<br />
policymakers about the dangers<br />
of pesticides in agriculture. The<br />
group submitted a petition to the<br />
government to ban endosulfan, a<br />
toxic pesticide. They have shown<br />
how these chemicals degrade<br />
environmental and human health.<br />
LOCAL LEADERSHIP for<br />
stronger communities and<br />
healthier environments<br />
The planet is already under stress, and<br />
the world’s population has surpassed<br />
7 billion people. As governments<br />
grapple with top-down environmental<br />
policy, local leaders are pursuing<br />
immediate and lasting strategies to<br />
care for communities and resources.<br />
Small-scale, sustainable agriculture<br />
provides food security and nutritious<br />
diets. Our grantees have trained<br />
thousands of families around the<br />
world on healthy, resilient farming<br />
techniques. They have established<br />
seed banks and started farmers’<br />
markets to sell local products.<br />
Organic farming also eliminates<br />
toxic pesticides, which, along with<br />
pollution from resource extraction<br />
and waste disposal, make our lands<br />
and waters unsafe. From direct action<br />
to international policy advocacy, our<br />
grantees are addressing these threats<br />
and creating a healthier planet.<br />

are working at the local and national levels,<br />
respectively, to promote healthy food and<br />
communities in India.<br />

Food & Agriculture<br />
Last year, our<br />
grants enabled 75+<br />
communities across the<br />
globe to move towards<br />
food security.
One project for climate<br />
adaptation changes<br />
the way of life for<br />
local women<br />
A project in eastern Uganda set out to<br />
address the local impacts of climate<br />
change. A grassroots organization<br />
educated villagers about its effects and<br />
taught ways to adapt and survive.<br />
In the process, local women saw<br />
how their acts of environmental<br />
stewardship eased the burden of<br />
caring for their families.<br />
Planting trees improved watersheds<br />
and soil quality. It also reduced the<br />
distance women have to walk for<br />
firewood.<br />
New home gardens with compost<br />
pits will provide food security during<br />
drought and give mothers a source of<br />
healthy food and financial savings.<br />
New energy efficient stoves, which<br />
women were trained to make and<br />
market, have reduced deforestation<br />
and carbon emissions. Indoor air<br />
quality has also improved, along with<br />
family health, and the women have a<br />
new skill and source of income.<br />
LOCAL SOLUTIONS tackle our<br />
greatest challenges and engage<br />
those most affected<br />
In <strong>2011</strong> natural disasters cost a record<br />
$265 billion. Extreme drought in East<br />
Africa left millions without food or<br />
income. Women are unduly affected by<br />
climate change and natural disasters;<br />
they are also powerful stewards of<br />
local solutions.<br />
From improving environmental health<br />
to generating sustainable sources of<br />
income to leading the call for justice,<br />
women across the globe are putting<br />
our small grants to use.<br />
The growing threat of climate change<br />
has been matched by an increase<br />
in climate-related grants to fund<br />
mitigation efforts, policy advocacy, and<br />
adaptation strategies.<br />
Grantee: Eco Development Foundation<br />
works in rural and urban communities<br />
across Uganda to improve environmental<br />
management and alleviate poverty.<br />

in rural Uganda now only<br />
need to collect a third<br />
of the fuelwood to feed<br />
their families.
Painting piggy banks to<br />
stop oil drilling and protect<br />
the rainforest<br />
For three decades, oil operations in<br />
the Ecuadorian Amazon put 18 billion<br />
gallons of toxic wastewater into the<br />
rainforest. Now, the government<br />
wants to drill for oil in Yasuní National<br />
Park—an incredibly biodiverse region<br />
with pristine waters and isolated<br />
indigenous tribes.<br />
In a symbolic gesture to pay for<br />
the park’s protection, a grassroots<br />
organization launched the “My<br />
Future Yasuní” campaign. The<br />
group distributed piggy banks to<br />
schoolchildren and spoke to classes<br />
about importance of Yasuní. The kids<br />
painted the pigs with drawings of trees<br />
and rivers, and then they marched to<br />
the capitol to deliver the piggy banks<br />
to the president. “Here, take what I<br />
have. Take the coins in my piggy bank<br />
to save my planet’s precious places.”<br />
While the prospect of oil development<br />
in Yasuní remains, each voice in defense<br />
of the natural reserve strengthens the<br />
grassroots movement to protect it.<br />
LOCAL VOICES call for justice<br />
and a better future<br />
The <strong>Global</strong> South has seen thousands<br />
of oil spills, but when the damaged<br />
Deep Horizon rig spewed oil into<br />
the Gulf of Mexico, the realities of<br />
oil development became real and<br />
emotional for many who live safely<br />
removed from its harmful impacts.<br />
Countless communities cope with the<br />
negative effects of oil development,<br />
along with those of mining and gas<br />
exploration, everyday. Our grantees<br />
are leading campaigns to call for<br />
environmental justice and protect<br />
human rights.<br />
Water sources are particularly<br />
vulnerable to contamination from<br />
oil, as well as the toxic chemicals<br />
and byproducts of extracting and<br />
processing raw materials. We are<br />
funding projects to prevent and reduce<br />
water pollution, to challenge practices<br />
that exhaust water resources, and to<br />
promote access to clean water.<br />
Grantee: Oilwatch is a global network of<br />
organizations dedicated to reducing the negative<br />
impacts of oil and gas operations on people and the<br />
environment.<br />
