Chief Executive Officer Report Coaching Resources Several new coaching resources were developed during the period including: • 2007 Trends of the Game • Twenty20 Touchdowns • Level Presenter Kits • National 8s Championships Finals Series • National Touch League Finals Series • Review and development of L2 presentation imagery • Review and update of several L documents TID Coach Program This initiative is incorporated in the NECAP Policy. Junior Coach Mentor Program Outcomes: Partially achieved, on-going. Comment: A policy on a National mentor program has been identified and rather than an isolated “junior” coach mentor program, the NCRG is to implement a coaching mentor program covering all areas of coaching. Annual “Trends of the Game” Resource The 2007 “Trends of the Game” was produced and distributed in October 2007 with many excellent comments on the concept and production. The 2008 Trends of the Game resource was designed and produced and is currently being distributed. Reward Program for Coaches Incorporated in coaching awards, Coaching Hall of Fame and coaching association policies in varying draft stages. Chief Executive Officer Report High Performance Following on from the TFA Strategic Forum held in March 2007 and the subsequent adoption of the TFA Strategic Plan, the High Performance unit had clear directions and targeted outcomes. In the Strategic Priority Area of Sport Development, the High Performance unit has been specifically involved with the following projects and related outcomes: • Open Program The new cycle leading up to the 20 World Cup began with the appointment of the National Open Coaches in October 2007. It is an exciting time with new blood, new directions and the selection of the 2008 National Training Squads (NTS). Many players who represented Australia with distinction over many years made themselves unavailable for selection, while others are taking a break as they reassess their future goals. This provided a number of players with the opportunity to be part of the NTS program for the first time. • Youth Program Moved into the penultimate stage with the selection of the 2007/08 Youth Squads after the 2007 8s Tournament and Australian Schools Championships. Players were also assessed and monitored at the 2008 National Touch League as well at all relevant competitions and tournaments. • National Camps The Open and Youth Squads attended a training camp at the NSW Academy of Sport complex at Narrabeen in Sydney where they were instructed on aspects including fitness processes and standards, personal training, recovery as well as skills and game play. One aim of the Youth Program is the transition of players into the open ranks and the combined camp provided the optimum environment in which to further this aim. A feature of the camp was the positive liaison between both open and youth coaches and players. This involved practical sessions, games, talks, video analysis and informal discussions. Another pleasing aspect of the camp was the interaction, both on and off the field, with members of the TFA Referee’s Panel and several elite and developing referees. Open communication will enable clarification of rule interpretations and expectations at both national and international tournaments and promote positive relationships. • High Performance Personnel Regular meetings, forums and discussions have resulted in a more inclusive and professional approach. This has enabled TFA management and volunteers to work together to ensure the best possible outcomes. 8 2007/08 Annual Report The input of the High Performance Coaching Directors in both the Open and Youth Programs has proven beneficial and they now play a much greater role in the development and analysis of programs and players, as well as providing advice and feedback to coaches. • Mentor Development The High Performance Program is now more comprehensive and includes all areas and personnel involved in elite Touch Football. This has enabled the further development of a mentor system, with several senior open players and coaches working more closely with the youth players and coaches. • Medical Program The formal appointment of a TFA Medical Coordinator has already proven beneficial with more structured and proactive processes and policies in place regarding the notification, treatment and monitoring of injuries. A Medical Referral Team has been established, which enables players to access the best and most appropriate treatment. It also provides regular and accurate information to the appropriate Coaches. • Sport Science Sport Science is seen as a valuable tool in the development of elite players, coaches and referees. Personnel from ‘FitSense’ work very closely with the High Performance Manager and National Coaches to develop appropriate team and individual training programs and provide feedback to players in both the Open and Youth Squads. Formalised fitness protocols and testing procedures are now well established and are constantly evaluated to ensure they best meet the needs of the High Performance Program. • Athlete Management System (Touch Base) Has been implemented and is proving a valuable resource. It includes a range of player data and information, including training criteria, medical reports as well as the assessment and monitoring of players. The aim is now to work towards making this a more comprehensive program in which personnel from States and Permits can input, and eventually access, relevant information. • Indigenous Program Participation in, and liaison with, the TFA Indigenous Advisory Committee, which aims to provide greater opportunities and mentoring for indigenous players, coaches and officials from affiliate through to the elite level, has been ongoing. Players were monitored, assessed and subsequently selected into the TFA Indigenous Squads that toured NZ in April 2008. Many of these players are currently in the National Youth Squads and their experiences will be invaluable in their preparation for the 200 Youth World Cup.
