Welcome & Programme
Welcome Messages
Message from the Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker
Christchurch is proud to once again be hosting this exciting event
on our city streets. This is not just a brilliant race – it’s also a fun
recreational ride where cyclists can get alongside and be inspired
by the best cycling athletes New Zealand has to offer. And even
though this is a great race, it’s also a summer fun day for all the
family. So come along, enjoy the entertainment and watch the
race. With over 130,000 people participating in cycling each year in
Christchurch, this event has become an important one for cyclists
and Cantabrians – so let’s all get out there and enjoy the ride.
Bob Parker, Mayor of Christchurch.
Message from BikeNZ Road & Track President Ivan Aplin
Welcome to the 2012 Calder Stewart Elite Road National
Championships. We thank the Christchurch City Council for
their support once again. 2013 will bring out yet again the
many hundreds of volunteers that unselfishly give their time
to the sport, we value your contribution. BikeNZ Road and
Track extend our appreciation to Calder Stewart, new principal
sponsor for the event and long term supporters of cycling. To the
athletes we wish you every success for safe and exciting races.
Race with distinction and good sportsmanship and look forward
to seeing 3 worthy champions. All the best,
Time Trials
Time Trials
Course Description
All time trials will be conducted on Friday 11 January 2013,
based at Lincoln University on Ellesmere Junction Road (see
course map for details). Time trials will be run in the order:
Elite Women – 25km
Under 23 Men – 40km
Elite Men – 40km
Riders will start at two minute intervals, with a short break
between grades and distance changes, starting at 10.00am.
The time trial course is predominantly flat, straight and fast,
although as it flanks the shores of Lake Ellesmere for most of the
route, it can be exposed to winds from most directions.
The course starts and finishes on Ellesmere Junction Road, at
the Lincoln Childcare and Pre-School Centre, utilising a starting
ramp, and heads out 2.7km to a left turn onto Leeston Road at
Springston. Team Cars will be parked in the Lincoln Golf Driving
Range car park, within metres of the starting ramp and can
clearly see their riders starting to move out in support.
From here it is a straight run out to 9.6km before crossing the
Selwyn River Bridge and continuing on Leeston Road to the turn
around points.
800 metres after passing Selwyn Lake Road, as we approach
the outskirts of Irwell, we reach the Elite Women’s turn
around point at 12.5km. The return leg takes you back on the
same route, turning right at Springston back on to Ellesmere
Junction Road at 22.2km. The finish line will be opposite the
start line at 25km.
Meanwhile the Under 23 Men and Elite Men continue on Leeston
Road through Irwell (13.7km) and Doylston (17.2km) to their
turn at Leeston. As you approach the outskirts of Leeston the
unmistakable War Memorial is clearly visible straight ahead.
This landmark forms a large central traffic island on Leeston
High Street and creates a fast and safe turnaround point at just
a few metres over the 20km mark.
The return leg follows the outbound leg, passing Doyleston
at 23km, Irwell at 26km, crossing the Selwyn River Bridge
at 30.4km and turning right back onto Ellesmere Junction
road at 37.3km. Again the finish line is opposite the start line,
measuring out at 40.1km.
In 2010 we saw the Under 23 record fall, but in 2011 we saw
both the Elite Men and Under 23 NZ records fall to below the
Sub 50 Min mark for the first time in New Zealand’s history.
Road Race Course
12- 13 January 2013
Course Description
Uniquely set within the city streets of Christchurch
The road course for the Championships is uniquely set within
the city streets of Christchurch, based at Pioneer Stadium
(Lyttelton Street) in the south western suburb of Hoon Hay.
The circuit covers 15.6km and incorporates the climb of the
Cashmere Hills. The first lap and the final lap, however, will
miss out the climb and cover a shortened lap of 12.7km.
Elite Men / U23 Men will cover a total of 12 laps giving a race
distance of 183.7km, whereas the Elite Women will cover a total
of 8 laps for a race distance of 120.5km
Start for all road races is on Rose Street. There is a 450m run
down to the first right turn onto Cashmere View Road then
gently falls away down to the Heathcote River before turning
left onto Ashgrove Terrace at 750m
The course now winds along the Heathcote River for 800m
providing an ideal viewing point on the river banks.
The course turns right at 1.55km onto Barrington Street toward
Cashmere Road Roundabout. On lap 1 and on the final lap, the
course turns right onto Cashmere Road past Princess Margaret
Hospital towards the Cashmere Downs.
From lap 2 onwards the course turns left onto Cashmere Road.
At a little over 2.0km turn right at the Dyers Pass Road
roundabout and head straight into the climb of Dyers Pass
which kicks in almost immediately to 10–12% as we progress
the 1.5km climb.
At the top of the climb (3.5km) the course turns right onto
Hackthorne Road for a fast 1.5km descent. Gradients range
from -4% to -7% with technically challenging turns.
At the bottom of Hackthorne Road prepare for a tight left turn
onto Cashmere Road (5.1km). Following again the Heathcote
River the course passes Princess Margaret Hospital towards the
Cashmere Downs.
A long straight run along Cashmere Road leads to a left turn,
remaining on Cashmere Road at 7.4km and becomes more rural
in setting. After a short climb at 9.5km, turn right at 10.4km onto
Sutherlands Road. Sutherlands Road is the site for the feed zone
for all races.
At (11.7km) turn right onto Sparks Road heading back towards
the city negotiating the Hendersons Road roundabout, keeping
straight ahead on Sparks Road.
Approaching the Hoon Hay roundabout you will
see the 1km to go board before turning right
onto Hoon Hay Road (15km).
A short 500m run down Hoon Hay
Road before the final left turn
onto Rose Street, leaves us
just 220m for the run in
to the Finish Line.
