SAE Medal of Honor

The SAE Medal of Honor pays tribute to a living SAE member for unique and significant

contributions to SAE International by strengthening or adding to its ability to further its

purpose. Unlike other SAE awards that recognize technical achievements or outstanding

accomplishments in the various fields of mobility engineering, this award honors an

individual for their contributions to the overall SAE International organization. The

significance of the contributions shall have been tested over time and shall be regarded as

a major factor in SAE’s success.

Established in 1986, this award is administered by the Medal of Honor Award Committee

and consists of a framed medallion made of precious metals.

DUANE TIEDE

CEO

ATI Inc.

Duane Tiede is the CEO of ATI, Inc., a design and

manufacturer of rubber track undercarriages for the heavy

duty off-road industry. He assumed that role in 2005. From

2000-2004, Mr. Tiede served as an industry consultant to a

range of heavy-duty product companies.

Prior to that, Mr. Tiede retired from CNH Global, where he

served as Vice President of Functional Engineering. After

joining Case Corporation in 1988 as Director of Product Performance and Evaluation, he

held a variety of engineering leadership positions including responsibility for all tractor

product programs and then Vice President of Functional Engineering. That role included

global responsibility for engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, cabs, electronics, advanced

technology, and the engineering support functions. He retired from CNH in 2000 after

leading the Engineering Integration Team for one year following the merger of Case and

New Holland.

Mr. Tiede was with Deere and Company at both the Moline Technical Center and the

Waterloo Product Engineering Center for 21 years. His engineering responsibilities

included engine design and noise control, vehicle performance simulation, Manager

of Operator Environment, Manager of Technical Services, and Manager of Hydraulic

Engineering.

Mr. Tiede served as SAE International President in 2004 and has been active in SAE

throughout his technical career at both the section and national level. He has authored

Technical Standards Board from 1991-1994 and served as Chairman of the Standards

Planning Committee in 1992, and TSB Chairman in 1993-1994. He served on the Board

of Directors from 1995-1998 the Non-Financial Audit Committee from 1998-2001, and

the Strategic Planning Committee from 1998-2003 which he chaired the last two years.

He served a second term on the Board of Directors as President Nominee/Elect,

President, and Past President in 2003-2005.

2

After his presidential term, he has led the new Executive Nominating Committee to

develop a process for selecting nominees for President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer,

and Board of Directors. This Committee and the processes they developed have resulted

in a pool of candidates for these positions with greater board diversity.

Since his presidential term, he was selected for the Finance Committee serving from

2006-2010. He served on the Fellows Committee from 2007-2010, the Medal of Honor

Committee from 2006-2009, and as Chair the last two years. He served on the Transition

automotive engineers in their endeavors to improve transportation powertrains.

Prof. Franz F. Pischinger has devoted his entire career to furthering powertrain technology

and the education of young engineers as they prepared for careers in engineering. He

held leading positions in the powertrain industry for most of his 50-year career and, until

2003, was the President and CEO of FEV Motorentechnik GmbH, where he currently

retains the title of Chairman of the Board. Prof. Pischinger has also been responsible for

educating thousands of students in the field of powertrain engineering, while overseeing

the activities of the Institute for Applied Thermodynamics at the Aachen Technical

University from 1970 to 1997.

The Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain Innovation Award was established in 2008 by FEV
