Chapter—3 T H E L A S T B E A R Village of Isenthal, Canton Uri, Switzerland Page 2 On May 29, 1820, the last bear in Isenthal was killed. It had been terrorizing the village killing the sheep and goats. Fear seized the village. No child was allowed from their house without an adult for 3 weeks. The bear hunt was dramatic and it was difficult to catch the bear. The physician and politician Karl Franz Lusser (1790-1859) left a written recording of the event, which has been roughly translated below. A goat herder in the forest at the foot of Mount Horn discovered a tremendous bear behind the village Isenthal. He took it to be the "Fluelerteufel" (a legendary beast) a name which one frightens the children there. Fourteen men from all sides of the village hurried into the forest to hunt down the bear. The oldest hunter of the valley Josef Anton Infanger, sawyer and gem hunter, fired the first shot the bear roared so loudly that the rocks trembled and shook. The bear gave off a stench, which one could smell down to the village. The bear rolled down the hill into the brook, where it was finished off. The following day the bear was triumphantly brought to the old village. It weighed 265 pounds and had nothing in his stomach, however there was still some sheep wool in the intestines. They also found the remains of a lead bullet which had been embedded in the bear’s jawbone sometime long before. The fur was grey-brown, the extremities were more darkly brown. The paws were sawed off and kept as a trophy. The meat which I tasted after it was roasted appeared white and was disgustingly sweet. Infanger received a hunting reward of one Louisdor (old French coin) from the canton Land Office. Infanger, the "sawing father", died 1852 at the age of 86 years. {Translation by: Juergen Knobloch}
