groups from the community visit the College during the Fall
and I often have the opportunity to tour them through the
engaged our students are, whether they see you in the labs,
classroom or busy in the atrium. You truly are one of the finest
assets of the College.
Have a Great Fall!!
STUDENT SENATE
Hello Everyone,
This year Student Senate will be sending care
packages out to troops as part of our goodwill
donation for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would
like to send care packages to those servicemen and
women whom any students, faculty, or
staff personally knows. If there is anyone
you would like to send a care package to
please e-mail me back with the following:
name, address, troop #, and any ideas for
what to put in the care package. In
addition, if anyone has any suggestions for
items we can put in the care packages we would
greatly appreciate this. I would like to receive the
information about care packages and who to send
them to by November 15th so we can get them sent
out. Thank you for all your help.
Sincerely,
Laura Boucher
FLU-LIKE ILLNESS
Is it hot in here??? If so, you may have the flu.
Information and protocols keep changing as the
CDC (Center for Disease Control) learns more
about the flu. The basic rule is that if you are ill,
stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is
gone (without the use of fever reducing
medicine).
One of the ways to protect
yourself against the flu is to get a
flu vaccine.
Bellin College students and employees
can get a FREE Flu Vaccine on the Bellin
Searching For Happiness
November 2010
Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of
of human existence ~ Aristotle
The pursuit of happiness has been a preoccupation for many of us
p Our goal is to address the whole since the dawn of mankind. Yet few of us come close to this state with any
regularity. And even when happiness finally descends upon us, we often only realize
it after the fact.
information, tools and tips that
will help you to cultivate the best
within you.
The Health Benefits of Happiness
There is a growing body of evidence that people think more effectively and
expansively when they are happy than when they are not. And happy people
are more energetic than unhappy people. We now know that happiness adds
about nine years to life expectancy. So even if you don’t think happiness
is such a big deal in itself, it seems to serve a useful function.
Happy people are more likely to change the world in positive ways.
Research suggests three different routes to happiness:
The Pleasant Life – consisting of as many pleasures as possible and the
skills to amplify the pleasure;
The Good Life – knowing what your strengths are and crafting your life to
use those strengths;
The Meaningful Life – using your strengths in service of something you
believe is larger than you are.
In Scotland, they are trying out a new and unusual kind of medicine – happiness. According to
Dr. Derek Cox, Director of Public Health at Dumfries and Galloway NHS, there is mounting evidence that happiness
might be at least as powerful a predictor, if not a more powerful predictor than some other lifestyle factors that we
talk about such as, cigarette smoking, diet and physical activity.
“It’s not just that if you’re physically well you’re likely to be happy but actually, if you are happy you are likely to
have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy,” said Dr. Cox. Research has found that happier
people also have greater protection against things like heart disease and stroke. In other words, we already know
what stress does to the body; we’re now learning that happiness has the opposite, protective effect on those same
biological pathways.
Does Happiness Live in Cyberspace?
So where do we look for happiness? A majority of people now log on to the web. The question is will the
internet make the world a happier or less happy place? Scientists know that human contact is critical to
happiness but technology can push that contact out of our lives. However, research has shown that people
who log on to the internet tend to have more friends than those who do not. According to Robert Putnam, a
celebrated social scientist, the key is in mixing the real and virtual experience. The huge growth in e-mail,
blogs, message boards and messenger services has created a host of new social networks which defy
geography. “Using the internet to make connections that you then meet in real life, that’s very positive,”
says Mr. Putnam.
Finding Happiness
“We search for happiness everywhere, but we are like Tolstoy’s fabled beggar who spent his
life sitting on a pot of gold, under him the whole time. Your treasure, your perfection is within you
already. But to claim it you must leave the commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego
and enter into the silence of the heart.” ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
It appears that happiness may be closer than we used to think. Studies have shown that happiness is most
often equated with contentment. According to the dictionary, contentment is:
Accepting things as they are
Mental and emotional satisfaction
Peace of mind
The trick is that what really matters is what is going on inside, rather than outside. Happiness lies in
making peace with what you have vs. what you want.
This isn’t always easy, very rarely do we have everything we want. But by changing your perspective you
can achieve contentment even if you can’t change the situation.
If your own mental attitude is right, even if you are in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy.
As the famous saying goes, change what you can, accept what you cannot and have the wisdom to know
the difference.
Finding happiness is not in striving for it as a goal, but being aware that we are happy living life twenty
four crowded hours a day.
