You will be lead through narrow lanes and historic squares and be inspired by Aachen’s nearly 2000 years of history. Get to know the various facets of Aachen: the modern city, beautiful old town houses, many old and new fountains, and numerous stories and anecdotes to the Cathedral und Town Hall. The route begins in the Frankenberg quarter with its beautiful old town houses, passing the spa quarter and leading up to the Lousberg. Here, you will hear about the clever market woman and enjoy the magnificent view of the city. The tour continues past the renowned technical university to the ultra-modern medical center “Aachener Klinikum”. In its halls, Charlemagne held his legendary celebrations. Later, German kings and lords had their banquets in the Coronation Hall, and today the famous Aachen Karlspreis is awarded here. Experience this gothic building with its baroque interior, where the Lord Mayor still resides today. Fantastic copies of the Imperial Insignia of the German Emperors and Kings are a reminder of more than 30 coronations that took place in this building. The building of the monumental Palace complex, which was constructed of stone, created an intellectual, cultural and political centre of power. Major parts of this Palace complex, including the Cathedral and Town Hall, have survived the centuries and have always been the centre of the city of Aachen. It is not only Charlemagne’s mythic attraction that will fascinate you, but also his story as one of the most interesting historical personalities. You will be introduced to the secrets of this speciality when visiting a genuine “Printen” bakery. You will learn why the “Printe” is a hard kind of biscuit and how it will soften up. Further, you will get to know the origins of the chocolate industry in a small Aachen pharmacy. Finally you will receive a small selection of this speciality. Pontviertel The Aachen “Latin Quarter” is called Pontviertel. It is here where students meet in the evening and where the majority of the restaurants are to be found. This quarter holds numerous hints about Aachen’s history that are off the beaten track. Starting in the market, you walk down Pontstraße and pass the main building of the technical university. The “forum M”, which has been established by the Mayersche bookshop and is equipped with the most modern technology, shows the history of the Aachen spa with a multimedia presentation. Duration: approx. 2 hours Price: on request bicycle tour to Maastricht Go on a bicycle tour through “Holland’s Switzerland!“ Cycle on old smuggler routes to the west of Aachen and cross the green border into Holland. The trip goes through fields and fruit orchards to the Limburgian arts and culture city of Maastricht. You will only need some sporting spirit and average fitness in order to go on this 20 miles bicycle trip full of experiences.
