Many of them are available in over a dozen custom colors, and can

BACK IN 1979, AT THE INDY 500, SIMPSON INTRODUCED ITS RX-1 HELMET. It was protecting 23 of the 

33 qualifiers, including the winner of course, Rick Mears. 

Now, 50 years later, our helmets have consistently evolved to incorporate the newest technology in air flow systems, 

communication, comfort, aerodynamic design and lightweight construction. Our helmets are still protecting famous and

HELMET FIT: A correctly fitted helmet should feel like an even amount of pressure is being exerted around your head 

and cheeks. But, helmets break in, so it should fit as tight as you can comfortably wear it. Once fastened, you should NOT 

be able to pull it off your head in any direction. Attention first-time helmet buyers: If your helmet is loose at all, and doesn’t 

fit well, it CANNOT DELIVER the best protection. A helmet’s strict safety standards can be compromised after only one

seat belts for the motorsports industry for 50 years now, we’re proud to offer you the highest quality restraint 

systems, harnesses, webbing and nets. 

What’s more, today the HANS Device is mandatory, we’re urging drivers to wear SFI 38.1 head and neck 

restraints, and we’ve even got a restraint out there for off road enthusiasts. 

IMPORTANT – YOUR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SHOULD BE REPLACED EVERY TWO YEARS. 

SFI 16.5 Stock Car Driver Restraint Assemblies Specification 

• Minimum width for all webbing: 1.72 inches 

• Minimum breaking strength for all webbing: 7,000 lbs. 

• Total load on Restraint Assembly Test (Body block test): 11,500 lbs. 

RESTRAINT INSTALLATION: Follow all the instructions when installing your restraints. Mounting angle, 

mount strength and belt path are all critical to a proper mount. Frequently inspect your restraints for wear 

and abrasion. Replace any restraint involved in a crash with a new set. With crashes in excess of 100 g’s 

becoming more common, you don’t want to compromise your safety. 

RESTRAINT INSPECTION: Restraints must be maintained, inspected, and replaced every two years in 

accordance with SFI 16.5 and 16.1 Specifications. Testing shows that the webbing degenerates from exposure to the 

elements over time. Prolonged exposure of seat belt webbing and thread to sunlight can cause degradation of 

the fibers and loss of restraint integrity. 

SFI MUST EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS of a manufacturer’s driver restraint system using their test 

procedures and minimum standards before being approved. 

THESE INCLUDE: 

• Webbing Tests: Determine composition, breaking strength, elongation and abrasion resistance. 

• Hardware Tests: Determine dimensions, radii, clearance and identification of the hardware. 

• Proof Load Testing: Complete belt assembly must pass a minimum body block test of 11,500 lbs. without failure and 

limited slippage of hardware or webbing. The buckle must then disengage under load within SFI’s standards. 

• Maximum Load Testing: Performed on the complete belt assembly using the Body Block Test. Maximum 

load before webbing or hardware failure must exceed 11,500 lbs. in order to pass.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION 

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT 

RESTRAINT SYSTEMS: 

Q: WHY DOESN’T SIMPSON STOCK BELTS 

AND RESTRAINT SYSTEMS? 

A: Every system is made when ordered to insure a 

current SFI date. 

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I INSPECT AND/OR 

REPLACE MY BELTS AND RESTRAINT SYSTEMS? 

A: Simpson recommends replacing your restraints 

every two years. You should inspect your belts 

and restraints before every use. Replace belts and 

restraints that have nicks, cuts, excessive wear, 

fraying and/or have been exposed to harmful 

chemicals or the environment. Proper restraint is a 

very important factor in safety. Replace any belts 

that experienced a crash or an event other than 

normal use. Do not use the restraint system again, 

even if it appears OK. We recommend (and some 

Sanctioning Bodies require) the belts be replaced two 

years after the date stamped on the SFI tag. Consult 

your Sanctioning Body for more information. 

DO NOT USE THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM AGAIN 

AFTER AN IMPACT. EVEN IF THERE IS NO VISUAL 

DAMAGE. 

If in doubt, return the restraint system to the 

Simpson factory in New Braunfels, TX for 

inspection. Keep the webbing and hardware free 

of exposure to chemicals, moisture, weather or 

conditions that could damage or compromise the 

strength of the system. 

Q: WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE TO “PULL UP” OR 

“PULL DOWN” TYPE BELTS? 

A: What you use is a matter of personal preference 

and the equipment you’re using. For example, does 

the belt go through the seat? Will you adjust it or 

will someone on the crew? What hardware works 

best with your set up? Bolt-in, Floor Mount or Wrap 

Around? The “Pull up” belts are 62” in length. The 

“Pull down” belts are 52” in length. 

Q: HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE RESTRAINT 

WEBBING? 

A: Clean with a mild detergent and damp cloth. 

DO NOT USE chemicals or solvents. Allow to air 

dry completely. All restraint systems and window 

nets, including webbing and hardware, should be 

checked for wear, fatigue and fastness regularly. 

Q: ARE SIMPSON RESTRAINT SYSTEMS DOT 

(DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION) APPROVED? 

A: No. Simpson restraint systems are SFI approved 

and dated.
