Nearly a mile and a half of the Grand
“We have always looked at ourselves
The floodplain forest habitat on the
property allows the river to continue
its natural flow and flood processes.
During high water or flooding, the
river simply comes up over its banks
and is allowed to slowly seep back into
the land. Water quality is maintained
From the Executive Director
“Why the Land Conservancy? What’s the attraction?”
Variations of those questions have been posed by
family, colleagues and friends since I announced I
was going to work for the Land Conservancy of
West Michigan. The answers to those questions have
prompted much reflection and have roots deeper and
older than LCWM.
Growing up in Hamilton, Michigan in the southern
portion of LCWM’s service area, I could walk out of
the back door of my house, around Miskotten’s Pond,
to the Rabbit River, and heading south, into the Allegan
State Game Area. My family got used to my afternoon or all day excursions fishing the pond
or river or just “walking the woods.” My adolescent years were spent on the river in a thirdhand
boat I rescued with paper route money and elbow grease, sometimes camping with my
brothers in an old canvas Army surplus tent. College in Holland was punctuated by getting to
know the dunes and waters of Lake Michigan and learning to sail. I also spent time camping
the Pere Marquette River as a counselor for middle school boys assigned by the Ottawa County
Juvenile Court to an outdoor “values clarification” program in the hope it would keep them
out of trouble and that by learning to canoe and cook their own food over fires they built
themselves they would also learn some skills about getting along with others.
During college it was Thoreau and Muir who helped me put words to my – our – need for
natural places. More recently it has been Richard Louv (Last Child in the Woods, 2008) and E.O.
Wilson (Anthill, 2010) which have helped me articulate our need to redefine ourselves within and
in relationship to nature.
The personal answer to “Why the Land Conservancy?” is connected to the ecological, social
and even economic answers to that same question. In the five weeks since I joined in the work
of LCWM I have been a part of conversations with smart people on:
• Protecting plant ecosystems and wildlife habitat.
• Building an endowment to support the stewardship of conservation easements and
preserves.
• Engaging community volunteers in trail maintenance and removing invasive species.
• The ethical choices to be made about what land to protect.
• The connections between conservation and quality of life as economic drivers in
Michigan.
Why the Land Conservancy?
Because the individual is connected to the community, because private practice is connected to
public policy, because the protection of some land is connected to the stewardship of all the
land. This is work that matters. That’s why the Conservancy.
After years of negotiations, planning, and fund raising, the
final two-thirds of the 173-acre Saugatuck Harbor Natural
Area was successfully transferred into the City of Saugatuck’s
ownership on December 19, 2011.
The Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area’s expanse of rolling,
open dunes, wetlands, and woods is protected and open to
the public for non-motorized recreational use as an addition
to the City’s award-winning Oval Beach park. There is a
marked trail system through the open dunes, and parking is
available at Oval Beach City Park ($6 for a day pass between
Memorial Day and Labor Day.)
It was the involvement of lead donors, including the James
W. Brooks & the Brooks family of Holland, The Frey
Foundation, Haworth, Inc. and Dick & Ethie Haworth,
Fred & Lena Meijer, The Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation,
Todd & Liz Warnock, and the J. A. Woollam Foundation in
addition to over 600 supporters, most from West Michigan,
that made this project possible. As part of the private fund
raising, the City of Saugatuck will receive an endowment
fund for the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area that will ensure
that the property will be preserved and maintained for future
generations.
Meet our new Executive Director Vaughn Maatman
Vaughn Maatman joined the Land
Conservancy as its Executive Director on
February 13, 2012. Originally from our
service area, Vaughn grew up along the
Rabbit River in the town of Hamilton in
northern Allegan County.
After Hope College and a graduate degree
at Princeton, he served in higher education
for 29 years at four institutions, including
Princeton University, Bowling Green State
University, the University of Chicago, and
Kalamazoo College, where he was the
Dean of Students and taught courses in
applied ethics, including environmental
ethics. For the five years immediately prior
to joining the Land Conservancy Vaughn
served as executive director of the Lake
Louise Christian Community in Boyne Falls,
Michigan. As director of this nonprofit
community, camp and conference center,
Vaughn worked with the Little Traverse
Conservancy and Michigan’s DNR on
establishing a 750-acre conservation easement
under the USFS Forest Legacy Program (a
work still in progress…).
They have two grown sons, Joseph and
Micah, and a daughter-in-law, Jenn. In
October 2011 they welcomed their first
grandchild, Emilia, daughter of Micah and
Jenn.
Vaughn shares what interests in him joining
the Land Conservancy of West Michigan:
“Working with the Land Conservancy aligns with
my personal values and connects with my interests in
ecology and environmental ethics. I recently read a
novel by E.O. Wilson, the Harvard entomologist and
naturalist, entitled Anthill (2010, W. W. Norton Co.) where
he described the relationship between humans and
nature this way. ‘Nature is not something outside of
the human world. The reverse is true. Nature is the
real world, and humanity exists on islands within it.’
As we seek to balance the developed and natural
spaces in our lives, I think that is on target. Working
with LCWM is a way of finding my place with an
organization that protects the spaces that help all of
us reframe our place on this planet and balance our
lives. I want to help protect places that help us breathe
deeply, regain perspective and deepen understanding,
and to conserve places like that for my kids and
granddaughter.”

Land Conservancy team gears up for 2012 Fifth Third River Bank Run
On May 12, 2012 Land Conservancy supporters will take part
in various Fifth Third River Bank Run events to help keep
nature nearby.
To date, the Land Conservancy has nearly 50 walkers and
runners serving as advocates for our work. These participants
are helping to raise funds for our cause while telling our story
to their friends and family.
Brandon Armstrong demonstrates why he decided to support
LCWM by participating in the River Bank Run:
Q: Are you participating in a 5K, 10K, or 25K event?
This will be my first time participating in the Fifth Third
River Bank Run 25K and longest competitive run to
date. I have participated in half marathons in the past,
including the North Country Trail Run and Cincinnati
Half Marathon.
Q: What personally draws you to the Land Conservancy?
Some of my earliest memories are of me, my dad
and grandfather sitting in a boat fishing for walleye or
tromping through the woods enjoying a nice summer’s day
hike. Without organizations such as this, outdoorsmen/
women would not benefit from all that nature has to offer.
It is imperative that we as conservationists act to protect
these areas now.
Q: How have you been
informing your family
and friends about your
participation in the
River Bank Run?
I’ve spread the word
through a variety of
online media including
e-mail and Facebook.
I have also made
phone calls asking for
support.
Brandon Armstrong, Land Conservancy
River Bank Run team member.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about race day?
I can’t wait to meet new people with a shared enthusiasm
for the outdoors and an interest in running to stay fit. I
am also looking forward to completing my longest run to
date alongside my wife. She has been my biggest running
inspiration. She continues to challenge me every week
and recently motivated me to start a running group at my
work. Having her at my side as we both cross the finish
line makes the experience that much more gratifying.
We invite you to join Brandon and the rest of the team as we
run or walk a River Bank Run event to keep nature nearby. Land
Conservancy participant perks may include a moisture wick
t-shirt and race day gear check.
Details can be found on www.naturenearby.org. To join
Lamberton Lake Fen hydrology restoration project
“Hey, sweetie, sweetie,” a chickadee calls from
the bare branches of a red osier dogwood,
located along the trail at our Lamberton Lake
Fen Nature Preserve. The fluttering of bright
pink flagging tape has piqued its curiosity and
it has flown in for a closer look.
The flagging is marking the locations where a
long anticipated hydrology restoration project
will begin in the coming months. Thanks in a
large part to a Landowner Incentive Program
grant from the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources, funding assistance from
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for
Fish and Wildlife Program, and donated
services from Larry Austin of Aqua-Tech
consultants, two culverts will be installed
along a berm that has long separated two
halves of a unique and rare prairie fen.
The berm was installed in the 1960s to
provide access to neighboring residential
properties. It has been unused as a roadway
since before the Land Conservancy acquired
the preserve in 1994. Unfortunately it
has also been acting as a dam, resulting in
restricted water flow on the north side of the
fen and causing the fen to dry out. This has
encouraged the growth of shrubby vegetation
and an invasion of exotic buckthorn.
On the south side of the berm water began to
back up, flooding the fen plants located there
and creating what is now an emergent marsh.
While an emergent marsh can be pretty to
look at it is not particularly rare in West
Michigan.
These culverts, once they are installed, will
allow water to resume a more natural flow
across the entire preserve. Slowly, over time,
the preserve should begin to resemble the
high quality prairie fen that once existed
here and will be an inviting place for the rare
and unique plants and animals that call such
special places home.
Several volunteer events will take place at the
Lamberton Lake Fen Nature Preserve this
spring and summer as we work to complete
this hydrology project. To receive the most
Keeping Nature Nearby
2011 Report to Supporters & Friends
2011 was a very successful year for land protection, highlighted by
the final transfer of the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area to the City
of Saugatuck in December 2011. The Land Conservancy also added
five new conservation easements that preserve important habitats
on private land, and we made a small addition to our Minnie
Skwarek Nature Preserve. Equally important is the continued
success of our land stewardship and outreach programs.
Protected acreage now stands at 7,985. Membership reached 2,020
households by December 31, 2011 with contributions totaling
$345,029. These individuals, families, corporations, and foundations
contributed 2,100 hours of their time volunteering. Financial
contributions as well as the time and talents devoted to our
organization keep nature nearby.
Founded in October 1976 as the Natural Areas Conservancy
of West Michigan, we celebrated 35 years of land protection in
2011 with the unveiling of a 35th anniversary campaign. Thank
you to the many supporters who have increased their financial
contributions in honor of our milestone anniversary (page 6).
Land Protection Successes
In 2011 the Land Conservancy protected 627.5 acres of natural
land on private properties. In addition, the Saugatuck Harbor
Natural Area project was completed (page 3) and land was added to
the Minnie Skwarek Nature Preserve. These projects, shown on the
map below, protected land in five counties.
Stewardship
Nature Preserves:
In 2011 over 570 dedicated volunteers contributed 950 hours
toward restoring wildlife habitat and the natural beauty of our
preserves. Volunteers were on the front lines in the ongoing battle
to reduce the impact of invasive plants at our preserves as well as
helping with restoration activities. Our 25 preserve stewards devote
their time and knowledge toward monitoring and caring for their
adopted preserves. Students from area schools participated in
service learning projects at many of our preserves.
Restoring pine-oak savannah for the federally endangered Karner
Blue butterfly, improving turtle habitat at our prairie fen, and
expanding grassland plantings at Saul Lake Bog were among the
many projects at our preserves this past year. An eagle scout
installed an osprey nesting platform at our Lamberton Lake
preserve. A hydrology study was completed at our Lamberton Lake
preserve in preparation for a planned restoration project due to
begin in spring of 2012 (page 7).
Sustain Our Great Lakes:
Through a grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we
worked in partnership with conservation organizations around the
state to continue to remove invasive lyme grass, oriental bittersweet,
Invasives were removed from 48 public lands and 98 private
properties in our service area. This grant was extended into 2012-
2013.
Conservation Easements:
All of our 72 easements were monitored in 2011. Annual
monitoring of these properties, which total 5,670 acres, is a critical
component of ensuring the protection of these properties in
perpetuity.
Community Connections
• 23 volunteer events were hosted at our preserves.
• Presentations on invasive species were given to groups such as
the Muskegon Shorescapers and Earth Partnership for Schools.
• Nearly three hundred people joined us at Post Family Farm for
our annual membership meeting featuring Dr. Rolf Peterson,
who presented on the Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale
National Park.
• Over 150 community members attended the June 2011
dedication of the Meinert County Park expansion property.
• Hikes introduced park visitors to the Saugatuck Harbor
Natural Area, including a New Year’s Eve hike with 80 guests.
• We had a display booth at Newaygo Nationals, the 2011 USCA
Canoe & Kayak Championships on the Muskegon River.
• We participated in Alcoa’s 60th anniversary event in Whitehall.
Strengthening the Organization
In 2011 the Land Conservancy applied for national land trust
accreditation. A pre-application due in August 2011 included basic
documents proving our readiness for the 44 page final application
submitted in November 2011. The full final application addressed
many questions about our policies, procedures and practices and
required backup documents to substantiate our answers. We expect
a final decision from the accreditation commission in the fall of
2012.
In fall 2011 the Land Conservancy’s Board of Directors led a
nationwide search for an executive director. By December 2011 the
search was near completion. In February 2012 Vaughn Maatman
began as the Land Conservancy’s new executive director (pages 2 &
4).
Financial Report to Donors
The generosity of individuals, families, businesses, and foundations
to the Land Conservancy remains the critical element for continuing
to meet our mission. A list of 2011 donors can be found on pages
12 and 13 of this newsletter.
An audit was prepared by the independent certified public
accounting firm of Ferris, Busscher, & Zwiers, PC. The 990 Report
to the Internal Revenue Service for fiscal year 2011 can be found on
Working collaboratively with Ducks Unlimited
and other area conservation groups, the Land
Conservancy will use a North American Wetlands
Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant to protect wetland
habitats and associated uplands, improve water
quality and increase publicly accessible lands through
conservation projects with several area landowners.
Other partners include Ottawa County Parks,
Muskegon Conservation District, Conservation
Resource Alliance and the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
“NAWCA grants are a crucial funding source for
conservation partnerships,” noted Michael Sertle of
Ducks Unlimited. “As a result of this funding we will
be able to cooperatively protect and restore some of
the Great Lakes’ most productive habitat.”
Pictured here is a bog in Newaygo County that will
likely be protected thanks to this grant.
About the event
The natural history, general ecology, and behavior of American black
bears are beautifully illustrated in this educational and entertaining
presentation. Dr. Alt shares many of his personal experiences
and encounters with over 3,000 bears which he has captured and
followed in the past three decades.
You will see rare photographs of cubs on their first day of life
and learn the answers to many commonly asked questions: How
dangerous are bears? How long do they live? Where do they den?
What do they eat? Do bears really hibernate? What should I do if I
encounter a bear in the wild?
Seating is limited. To register for the event please visit www.
