3.6.2 Concurrent <strong>AIX</strong> Update commands and SMIT menus<br />

The customer will manage Concurrent <strong>AIX</strong> Updates by using the emgr command. The emgr<br />

command has several flags; for additional information about the flags, refer to the man pages<br />

(use the man emgr command). You can also obtain limited help information by simply entering<br />

the emgr command.<br />

Concurrent updates are packaged by using the epkg command. The epkg command also has<br />

multiple flags; for additional information about the flags refer to the man pages (use the man<br />

epkg command). You can also obtain limited help information by simply entering the epkg<br />

command.<br />

The SMIT menus<br />

You can access the emgr main menu by using the smitty emgr command. The menu is<br />

shown in Example 3-11.<br />

An update to the in-memory image, update of the base kernel and/kernel<br />

extensions that is immediately active or subsequently inactive without reboot.<br />

Synonyms: hotpatch, live update, online update.<br />

Control file A text file that contains all information required by emgr command to perform any<br />

update, whether concurrent or not.<br />

Timestamp The timestamp recorded within the XCOFF header of the module targeted for<br />

updating. It is used to validate that the ifix was created for the proper module<br />

level.<br />

Description file A text file derived from the emgr control file, and which contains only<br />

information relevant to Concurrent <strong>AIX</strong> Update. The kpatch command requires<br />

this file to apply a Concurrent <strong>AIX</strong> Update.<br />

Fix or patch Interchangeably used to refer to a software modification created to resolve a<br />

customer problem.<br />

ifix Interim fix. Package delivered for customer for temporary fixes.<br />

Synonym: efix<br />

Kernel extension Used to refer both kernel extensions and device drivers.<br />

Module An executable such as the kernel or a kernel extension.<br />

Patchset The complete set of patches composing a fix.<br />

Target or target<br />

module<br />

An executable that is to be patched (kernel or kernel extension).<br />

EFIX Management<br />

Move cursor to desired item and press Enter.<br />

List EFIXES and Related Information<br />

Install EFIX Packages<br />
