In October 1990, a U.S. Senate aide wrote to <strong>the</strong>n secretary <strong>of</strong> defense<br />

Richard Cheney to warn him <strong>of</strong> a possible breach <strong>of</strong> national security.<br />

A researcher in reversed-speech <strong>the</strong>rapy—that is, <strong>the</strong> notion that <strong>the</strong><br />

subconscious mind slips backward words into a person’s speech—had obtained<br />

tapes <strong>of</strong> speeches by <strong>the</strong>n president George H. W. Bush, Secretary<br />

<strong>of</strong> State James Baker III, and Cheney. When <strong>the</strong> tapes were played in reverse,<br />

<strong>the</strong> researcher reported, <strong>the</strong> word “Simone” was audible in all<br />

three. “I mention this in case it is a code word that should not be in <strong>the</strong><br />

national interest to be known,” <strong>the</strong> aide wrote. A Pentagon spokesman<br />

later told <strong>the</strong> Associated Press that Cheney knew <strong>of</strong> no such code word.
