HHLA CONTAINER
HUB FOR
WORLD TRADE
At the HHLA Container Terminals ship and rail are intermeshed
into ecologically advantageous worldwide
transport chains. The three high-performance terminals
Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort make the Port
of Hamburg one of the most important global container
hubs. Technical innovation and automated work processes
render internationally pace-setting productivity possible.
Targeted investment in cutting-edge technology ensures
that it will remain so. HHLA operates a leading handling
facility in the Container Terminal Odessa (Ukraine) in a
region of dynamic growth on the Black Sea. A variety of
service companies companies contribute a full full range of box-related
services. The HHLA Container Terminal sales staff fi nd
the right specialists immediately.
THE WORLD IS GROWING TOGETHER.

HIGHTECH FOR
MEGA SHIPS SHIPS
Specialists from all over the world are fascinated by the
fi nely balanced interaction of the semi-automatic container
gantry cranes, automatic guided vehicles (AGVs)
and computerized storage cranes. With its high degree
of automation, ever since opening in July 2002 HHLA
Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) has been stateof-the-art.
Specialists monitor and steer the complex
systems from the terminal’s control centre. The size and
volume of transport in containerships for global goods
exchange is continually rising. The innovative terminal was
conceived for this challenge. Through highly sophisticated
planning and standardization CTA achieved the highest
effi ciency within a very short time. Many steel boxes are
being handled at any one moment. Up to 10,000 standard
containers can be handled in the terminal in two days:
Small inland ports would need a whole year.
Handling at Burchardkai: Almost one third of all containers
in the Port of of Hamburg goes through this this terminal. terminal.
HHLA CONTAINER TERMINAL BURCHARDKAI
ALL SIGNS POINT
TO THE FUTURE
From the very beginning Burchardkai was programmed
for the future. It was here that the age of the container
began in the Port of Hamburg in 1968: The fi rst straddle
carriers (van carriers) in the world went into operation
here. HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) was a
pioneer in locating containers in storage by satellite, and
many innovations for gantry cranes. Today 25 container container
cranes load and discharge the freight of over 5,000 ships
annually, handling approximately one third of the whole
container volume in the Port of Hamburg. Since 2004
parallel to normal operations a considerable extension and
modernization programme has been underway that will
increase productivity, performance capability and capacity
of the 1.4-hectare facility, step by step to a new level;
technical innovations such as the tandem gantry crane
and area-intensive block storage included.

goes on at at Tollerort very near to the the city.
New container rail terminal at CTT: Capacity increased fi vefold.
HHLA CONTAINER TERMINAL TOLLERORT
HUGE POTENTIAL
IN THE HEART OF OF
THE PORT
For walkers with an interest in the port hardly any Hamburg
terminal is easier to see than HHLA Container Terminal
Tollerort (CTT). Mega-containerships regularly make fast
directly opposite the architectural‚ String of Pearls‘ on
the northern banks of the Elbe. Straddle carriers scurry
across Tollerort stacking the containers three-high. The
latest generation of container gantry cranes handle
super-freighters with slots for 13,000 standard containers.
Despite the large scale, value is placed on fl exibility and
personal customer contact. The course for the future has
been clear for a long time: The highly optimized terminal
layout and the new container rail terminal already give
CTT a new look today. With state-of-the-art rail cranes
handling block trains, capacity for rail handling has
increased fi vefold.
Effi cient container handling: The market position will be
strengthened further by the extensions.
Coloured boxes on the Black Sea: The Port of Odessa from above.
HHLA CONTAINER TERMINAL ODESSA
PIONEER ON
THE BLACK SEA
The Black Sea has long been linked to the worldwide seafaring
network. With its Sea Commercial Port of Odessa,
the Port of Odessa (Ukraine) so rich in traditions is today
one of the most important container hubs in Southern
Europe. The Container Terminal is run by the HHLA subsidiary
HPC Ukrania. With international management
experience HPC ensures reliable reliable container container handling, handling,
implementing practice-oriented innovation. innovation. With new
berths for large ships and a modular extension concept, its
leading position in this growth region will be strengthened.
In the last few years the terminal has already proved highly
effective. Decisive here is the staff’s high motivation, on duty
round the clock for 364 days a year.

the cargo, checking the goods, customs clearance and
veterinary control. In addition they handle heavy goods
and project cargo, supported by two HHLA fl oating
cranes that can lift a load of up to 300 tons.
