Welcome to this new issue of our
magazine. How do top managers at
DB Schenker Logistics exchange
information on a global level when it
comes to future plans and development?
There is a tradition of world
conferences, as we call them. In this
issue, we give you a look at this year’s
conference we had in Alpbach, a
village in the Austrian mountains.
Please read more on page 4 and 5.
Our global network really is an asset,
for us and for our customers. We have
to be, where the growth markets are.
From pages 8 to 11 you will find information
on new locations, such as our
new terminal and customs warehouse
in Morocco, linking Europe and
Africa. Or take the new multimodal
facility in Northern Italy, in
Dinazzano, a 250 meters long single
track hall, for the transshipment of
sensitive goods between rail cars and
trucks. Or our new subsidiary in
Eastern Europe, in Belarus. Not to
forget the new platform in Catalonia,
Spain. And as there is now more
growth in China’s hinterland, there
will be a total of 15 new DB Schenker
sites by the end of 2011.
The “transport logistic” fair in
Munich was a hotspot for the logistics
world. More than 51,000 visitors from
134 countries attended the fair. And
the DB Schenker stand was a focal
point in the halls. For all those who
could not attend: there is a report on
pages 14 and 15.
Four letters: FLEX. They stand for
“Flawless Execution”, the global
quality and efficiency program in
Contract Logistics. Customers are
adopting now DB Schenker methods
and are aligning their own business
excellence programs with our quality
and performance processes. More on
pages 16 and 17.
And as always there is far more to
discover in this issue of our magazine:
from our services for the FIFA
Women’s World Cup to the certified
quality of our European land transport
products, from services for
premium spirits and solar modules
to our new subsidiary in Iceland, the
world’s biggest solar-powered cooling
system or a gas heated reactor in
South Africa. Not to forget the last
journey of a historic steam locomotive
or the personnel news.
As always, enjoy your reading!
World Conference
Base camp for the future
How do top managers at DB Schenker Logistics exchange
information on a global level when it comes to future plans and
development? There is a tradition of world conferences, as they are
called. In June, some 190 participants from the global network met
in Alpbach, Austria to discuss the status and future of the group.
In addition to the world conference,
this Tyrolean village, located between
Kufstein and Innsbruck and
home to a modern congress center,
has hosted a number of internal DB
Schenker meetings and discussions
with participants from all over the
world. The global conference with the
motto “Summit Level 4” started with
a musical surprise, a short concert by
the Kaiserjäger, a famous Tyrolean
military band. Dr. Thomas Lieb then
opened the conference with his presentation
on the way forward, “DB
Schenker Logistics 2015”. Other important
topics on the agenda included
strategic questions in European Land
Transport, Global Air and Ocean
Freight, Contract Logistics and Supply
Chain Management as well as Finances,
Information Technology and
Human Resources. The respective
board members presented the status
and developments in three sessions
with ample time for discussion.
During the presentations, the
strategic levers for reaching the overall
Level 4 goals were outlined and
explained in detail for all
business units and at
group level. Four
measures
4 | Newsletter No. 64/11
were identified specifically for the
Schenker group. First, it is vital to increase
Schenker’s footprint in emerging
markets, as future growth will
be driven mainly by these countries
and regions. The second lever will be
the new Key Account Management
structure which groups accounts into
Vertical Markets and increases focus
Even DB CEO
Dr. Ruediger Grube
joined the conference
for a special
dinner speech.
on small and medium-sized entities
and on geographies. This re-organization
was inspired by the idea of
bundling industry-specific expertise
and offering vertical solutions to the
customers. Thirdly, the implementation
of the “New IT Landscape” with
efficient processes and state-of-the-art
IT systems will significantly improve
productivity and profitability. The
fourth lever for reaching “Summit
Level 4” is based on clear and focused
management accountability.
However, there were more opportunities
for discussion outside the
conference room. A special mountain
hike offered time for networking.
During the first evening, DB CEO Dr.
Ruediger Grube joined the participants
and gave a special dinner speech.
Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, responsible
for Transportation and Logistics
on the Management Board of DB Mobility
Logistics AG, was present for
the entire conference and gave participants
a closer look at the Deutsche
Bahn. During the second evening, a
festive dinner at Swarovski Crystal
Worlds was the perfect sett-ing for
the CEO Award. The CEO Award is
a special acknowledgement of extra
effort and outstanding results.
The winner of the CEO Award
for small legal entities was Reiner
Allgeier, Schenker Philippines, Inc.
The award for medium-sized legal
entities went to Hans-Juergen Scheidel,
Schenker S.A. de C.V. in Mexico; and
finally, the award for large entities
went to three colleagues representing
the organization in China: Karl-Heinz
Emberger, Thomas Hauck and Soren
Poulsen. Along with a crystal trophy,
all recipients were awarded prize
money for a company event of their
choice with the aim of motivating
their teams to even better performance.
“We count on your support on our
way from Base Camp to Summit Level
4,” wrote Dr. Thomas Lieb in his letter
to all participants a few days after
the conference. The participants have
special homework to do: they have to
develop specific customized roadmaps
leading to future success at
national and regional levels. n
Award. From left: Thomas Hauck, Soren Poulsen, and Karl-Heinz Emberger, all China, Dr.
Sports Events
“
T
here’s a lot involved in planning
and implementing the logistics
for events like these. Besides
taking care of the stadium logistics,
we have to organize the transport of
team kit from all over the world. That
also involves moving it between the
stadium, the airport and the hotel.
That’s why we develop a unique customized
logistics concept for each
event,” explains Julia Bierwirth, Head
of the Soccer Competence Center at
DB SCHENKERsportsevents. No
wonder that Ulrich Wolter, Chief Coordinator
of the FIFA Women’s World
Cup 2011 TM , was full of enthusiasm:
“Thanks to all the players and spectators
for a great soccer event. Thanks
too to the experts from DB Schenker,
who made sure that the team jerseys,
training equipment, balls, medical
kit and much more arrived on time
and also took care that the journalists
could work in ideal conditions.”
Talks with the organizing committee
begin years in advance. And
nothing is possible without the com-
on the ball
Experts from DB Schenker Logistics were
pulling the strings behind the scenes for
the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 TM : a task force of professionals
from DB SCHENKERsportsevents made sure that every item of
equipment, every piece of kit and every technological device arrived
in the right place at the right time.
petent liaison manager, who acts as a
link between the organizing committee
and the team from DB Schenker.
Marc Schäfer consequently moved his
work-place from the Corporate Office
of Schenker Deutschland AG in Kelsterbach
to the organizing committee’s
office next to the Deutscher Fußballbund
(German Soccer Association) at
the stadium in Frankfurt am Main.
“Being so close to the action, I was in
on the processes right from the beginning
besides being in a position to
guarantee optimum logistics controlling,”
he says. Schäfer and his five colleagues
from Kelsterbach are proud
that their work made such a contribution
to the success of the FIFA
Women’s World Cup 2011. “We feel a
bit like world champions ourselves,”
he grins.
A venue logistics manager was
responsible for coordination at each
of the nine stadiums; another 100
personnel and 160 volunteers from
the organizing committee took charge
of the operational activities on site.
The transports to the stadiums and
hotels at each of the venues alone
added up to about 28,000 kilometers
for the 16 teams.
Between 500 and 5,000 kilograms
of kit had to be transported to
the hotels for each of the 16 national
teams; often it all had to be moved on
to the next World Cup city overnight.
Each team’s kit included several sets
of football strips, training clothing,
medical equipment, balls and much
more. More than 600 televisions were
delivered and set up in the media
stands. Forklifts, lift trucks and other
equipment were provided, 230 copy
machines, printers and fax machines
set up. Not to mention furniture,
multi-purpose containers for fan messages,
offices and the sanitary areas.
Moreover, the heart of all the
media activity was this year located in
Frankfurt: the IBCC or International
Broadcast Communication Center.
This is where all the TV signals from
all the World Cup stadiums were
edited and transmitted to the broad-

casting TV stations all over the world.
The German public broadcasting companies
ARD and ZDF also produced
their broadcasts directly in Frankfurt.
DB Schenker’s tasks included the setup
and servicing of the IBCC. The exceptionally
high levels of electricity
consumption, for example, meant
that cooling units had to be kept working
at all times. Joachim Gniza,
Schenker Deutschland AG’s venue
manager for Frankfurt, also had to
take responsibility for this: “The very
worst thing that could have happened
would of course have been a power
Photos: Pixa
cut. But that didn’t happen. And even
if it had: we had already taken the
necessary precautions.” An emergency
power generator was kept at hand
just in case.
The spectators in their living
rooms at home naturally had no idea
of all this. This means that DB
Schenker’s logistics experts reached
their goal, as Marc Schäfer confirmed:
“This work is all done behind the
scenes. If you can’t see any of it during
the game, that means we did our job
properly.” n
The experts from DB Schenker made sure
that the team jerseys, training equipment,
balls, medical kit and much more arrived on
time. They also took care that the journalists
could work in ideal conditions.
The interface with Europe
New capacity for a growing
market: DB Schenker Logistics
has expanded its international
land transport services and successfully
established air and
ocean freight services in Morocco
by setting up a new terminal and
its own customs warehouse in
Casablanca.
50
percent of Medtrans Maroc
were acquired back in
1989; since 2008, the company
has been doing business as
Schenker Maroc S.A.R.L. 27 people
currently work at the central office
in Casablanca and a second office in
Tangier. The terminal, fitted with the
latest security equipment, is located
just three kilometers away from the
port in Casablanca.
DB Schenker offers full truck
One new feature is a nightly connection
between Casablanca Airport and
Tangier Free Zone. As regards the full
container load sector, Casablanca and
Tangier are both receiving terminals
for consignments from Rotterdam,
Hamburg, Lyon and Barcelona. The
national company offers scheduled air
in Morocco are proud that their customers
already include quite a number
of global concerns. n

Linking Road and Rail
in Northern Italy
A new logistics center by DB Schenker in the Northern Italian town
of Dinazzano improves the links between road and rail. The center,
located next to the already existing facilities of the Schenker
Italiana S.p.A. branch of Dinazzano specialized in rail logistics and
forwarding, offers complete multimodal solutions.
The single-track hall of the new
terminal is 250 meters long and
26 meters wide and has an indoor
height of ten meters. Inside the
hall, valuable sensitive freight can be
transshipped between rail cars and
trucks in any weather. The terminal
makes comprehensive additional logistics
services possible. The site also
includes an approximately 30,000
square meter asphalted outdoor area.
The siding is 600 meters long.
The facility offers efficient transshipment
equipment, including bale
clamp forklifts with rotating clamps,
cranes that can carry up to 35 tons and
a truck scale for checking vehicle
units up to 18 meters long. The quartz
cement floor inside the terminal can
support up to 100 tons. The team of
specialists of Schenker Italiana’s
branch of Dinazzano for rail forwarding
and logistics is also based in the
new logistics center. Along with the
existing DB Schenker Railport in
Castelguelfo, the new terminal gives
DB Schenker especially efficient capacity
in the Emilia-Romagna region.
“Our new multimodal logistics
center serves as an interface between
road and rail and enables a high service
quality for a wide range of logistics
services,” said Karl Nutzinger,
Member of the Management Board
of Schenker AG responsible for Land
Transport. “The new terminal has
Network
allowed us to continue to expand our
leading position in rail forwarding.”
The center is located near
Bologna and Modena, in one of Italy’s
most important economic regions. In
addition to the automotive industry,
the region is also home to over 200
companies that manufacture tiles
and terracotta products for export.
DB Schenker supplies the Italian tile
industry with around one million
tons of clay from Germany’s Westerwald
region by rail via the Dinazzano
terminal. From there, Schenker
Italiana S.p.A. in cooperation with DB
Also in Belarus
Now, DB Schenker Logistics is
represented in Belarus with its
Previously, an office in Minsk had
The new subsidiary in Belarus, with
locations in Minsk and at Minsk Airport,
connects Belarus with the DB
Schenker global network and its
The new company offers the full
full-load freight shipments bound to
and from Belarus, Russia and
Kazakhstan, and air and ocean freight
services that include the handling of
all customs formalities.
“The new national company will
enable us to strengthen our network
Land Transport
Pan-European service for Kone
Recently, Schenker Deutschland
AG took over the pan-European
procurement and distribution
transport logistics for the spare
parts warehouse of KONE in
Herten, Germany.
This comprehensive outsourcing
solution allows the elevator and
escalator specialist, one of the
global leaders in this industry, to
make its in- and outbound service logistics
processes significantly more
reliable and transparent throughout.
“We developed a reliable transport
concept and individual IT solutions
for KONE which facilitate optimum
control and extensive monitoring of
all processes in the procurement and
distribution segments,” explains
Aloys Winn, Head of Land Transport
at Schenker Deutschland AG. “This
enables us to offer our customer
across Europe.” This transparency is
supplemented by extensive monthly
reporting comprising numerous statistics,
detailed information about
each consignment and data relating to
the CO 2 emissions produced. “When
supplying spare parts, KONE relies
on DB Schenker’s dense European network
with short, dependable throughput
times and fixed contacts,” explains
Marc Kolodzick, responsible
Key Account Manager Industrial at
the Central Industrial Solutions/Projects
division of Schenker Deutschland
AG. For the central spare parts warehouse
in Herten, specialists from
DB Schenker Logistics ensure that
all shipments from more than 1,200
suppliers throughout Europe are received
and processed smoothly. They
are also responsible for the reliable
and punctual supply of European
service partners and end-users with
urgently needed spare parts.
The logistics specialists have set
up two service desks at the offices in
German towns of Dortmund and
Hagen to ensure that all processes are
optimally controlled. They are respon-
KONE’s suppliers notify the company
that their consignments are ready for
collection via a version of the online
platform e-Schenker especially tailored
to meet the company’s requirements.
The respective service desk
coordinates and monitors the punctual
collection of the consignments in the
pan-European land transport network
of DB Schenker Logistics and ensures
that spare parts are delivered punctually.
In this way, around 150 tons of
accessories reach KONE’s spare parts
warehouse in Herten every month;
from here, around 100 tons are dispatched
to recipients throughout Europe.
For the world’s biggest
solar-powered cooling system
Schenker & Co. AG in Austria recently successfully managed the
transport of outsized collectors from Austria to Arizona, USA,
Delivering
solutions
A strong showing at the world’s largest trade fair for transport logistics:
in May in Munich, Germany, DB Schenker featured not only a prominent
array of networks, but also attractive industry solutions as well as offers
for sustainable climate protection.
“
T
his trade fair is and will continue
Climate-friendly: Eco Solutions
By presenting Eco Solutions, DB
Schenker once again underlined
its objective of becoming the
leading provider in the field of
green transportation and logistics
services. “We are conscious of
our responsibility as a service and
logistics provider, and have to this
end not only set ambitious, groupwide
emissions-reduction targets for
ourselves, but are also now offering
our customers a comprehensive range
of solutions to enable them to better
pursue their own climate protection
objectives,” stated Dr. Rausch. Eco
Plus, for example, offers customers
CO 2 -free rail freight throughout Germany.
The energy required is taken
entirely from renewable sources,
and DB Schenker uses ten percent

of the revenue generated from Eco
Plus to support the construction of
new renewable energy power plants.
Eco OceanLane enables customers to
reduce their CO 2 emissions for ocean
freight by up to 50 percent – and with
Eco Charter, the air freight solution,
they can reduce their CO 2 emissions
on the routes from Frankfurt to
Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore
and Chicago by up to 20 percent.
In the sector of land transport, DB
SCHENKERhangartner and DB
SCHENKERrailog offer customers
a combination of road and rail
transportation that allows them to
reduce their CO 2 emissions by up
to 60 percent. Eco Warehouse has
in conclusion been presented as a
solution for building and operating
warehouses, energy efficiently and
sustainably, thereby reducing CO 2
emissions by up to 35 percent.
The DB Schenker Award
Traditionally awarded at the transport
logistic in Munich is also the DB
Schenker Award, a prize endowed
with 10,000 euros for young scientists
and one of the highest European accolades
in the logistics sector. Dr.
Stefan Walther from the University of
Erlangen-Nuremberg was this year
honored with the DB Schenker Award
2010 in lieu of his dissertation “Industrializing
Transportation Networks:
An Analysis and Evaluation of Alternative
Approaches to Cargo Transport
Services with special Reference to the
European Over-the-Road Truckload
Carrier Industry”. “Dr. Walther’s
paper addresses one of the largest and
most important economic sectors in
Europe – the truckload carrier industry.
With his paper, Dr. Walther has
focused on an area into which little
research has been carried out to date.
He has developed highly practical
approaches that allow this industry
to operate more efficiently and thus
more sustainably in future. As the
leading land transport company
in Europe, his work is also of great
interest to DB Schenker,” explained
Contract Logistics
The fine art
of optimization
The Contract Logistics Supply Chain Management business unit
at DB Schenker has been implementing its global FLEX program since 2007.
FLEX stands for “Flawless Execution” and is a quality and efficiency program.
Dr. Detlef Trefzger, board member at Schenker AG and responsible for
Global Contract Logistics and Supply Chain Management,
explains how FLEX became part of the worldwide Contract Logistics/
Supply Chain Management DNA.
There are many ways of
optimizing business processes
and performance. What makes
FLEX so special? And why is it
successful?
Dr. Trefzger: As a global provider, we
have to offer our customers consistently
high service and quality standards
wherever needed. This is why we had
to define uniform standards throughout
the world. Our tool for safeguarding
these standards is FLEX. This is
a holistic approach. We do not focus
on the individual programs; instead,
it is the sum of the parts that gives
our customers the winning edge. This
Business Excellence Program has now
become part of our CL/SCM DNA,
driven by dedicated methodology and
a sustainable improvement culture
within our business unit. We began
gradually, invested in training and
raising awareness. It still is a process
of continuous learning and continuous
improvement. And – very important
– we do it with our own
specialists. The secret lies primarily
in our employees’ change of attitude
and their burgeoning sense of continuous
improvement. And we are continuously
measuring the increase in
productivity and quality.
16 | Newsletter No. 64/11
FLEX
FLEX guarantees quality,
efficiency and lean processes
FLEX ensures customer
and employee satisfaction
FLEX preserves natural recources
FLEX is sustainable
How do you manage to maintain
this increase in awareness?
Dr. Trefzger: We hold a lot of training
sessions. We have implemented the 5S
method at more than 350 DB Schenker
Logistics locations in Europe, the
Americas, Asia, all the way to Australia.
5S is a methodology for organizing
the workplace. This year, we have
scheduled 135 so-called POP workshops
around the globe. POP stands
for Permanent Optimization Program;
we developed this on the basis of the
Japanese philosophy of life and work,
Kaizen. Like 5S and POP, it is based
on intense staff participation.
Any other
secret?
Dr. Trefzger: The fine art of optimization
culminates in the Six Sigma
projects designed to boost value creation
for the customer in the case of
particularly complex processes. Both
POP and Six Sigma have become an
integral part of our improvement culture
at many locations worldwide.
Photo: DB Schenker
Are there any more tools
in your box?
Dr. Trefzger: Yes, Operational Excellence
is just one element in our program
package. As I said, FLEX is a
holistic program. The most important
aspect of our FLEX program is the
Workflow Excellence component, as it
guarantees standardized procedures
for all contract logistics projects
anywhere in the world, from business
development via pricing and documentation
to implementation and
realization. Another component is
what we call Knowledge Excellence.
This focuses on staff skills, also via
e-learning. The spectrum ranges from
training courses on topics such as
material flow planning or process
design to a global knowledge database.
And the next topic on our agenda is
Eco Excellence in contract logistics.
All three components have helped
bring about significant improvements
in efficiency and quality, both inter-
“Our customers are
adopting our methods
and aligning their own
business excellence
programs with our
quality and performance
processes,”
says Dr. Detlef Trefzger.
nally and externally. Their success
has been so marked that our customers
are adopting our methods and
aligning their own business excellence
programs with our quality and
performance processes. We have consequently
created a unique selling
point and a new benchmark that is
extremely beneficial to our customers.
Quality assurance for solar modules
n DB Schenker Logistics has recently
integrated the quality testing of PV
modules into its supply chain in order
to achieve a consistently high delivery
quality. The solar modules of the
Norwegian solar technology company
Innotech Solar AS (ITS) are being
tested within the framework of a pilot
project by employees of Schenker
located in the German city of Hilden.
The special testing facility has been
a company specialized in providing
independent quality assurance, based
on the data analysis that takes place
in the PV Lab’s laboratory in Potsdam
defects in cell and module processing,
prior to delivery. This helps prevent
costly reclamations and replacements.
The project is being coordinated by
Land transport products now with
certified quality
n Bureau Veritas was recently commissioned
to audit the DB Schenker
Logistics quality management system
for European land transport. The system
focuses on customer requirements
and on the operational processes
and elements that have an impact
on quality. The certification company
confirmed that the system is able to
meet the high demands made of it.
“Our integrated quality management
system has three overriding
objectives,” says Karl Nutzinger, the
member of the Schenker AG Management
Board with responsibility for
land transport. “Consignments and
information must be delivered within
the agreed time frame and arrive complete
and undamaged, and the invoice
must specify the agreed services and
prices. Provided we keep achieving
these objectives, we can continue to
build on our market-leading position.”
DB Schenker’s land transport
organization in Europe has been certified
to ISO 9001 since 2002. The national
companies in the various countries
have long had the relevant certificates
and management systems.
“Our analyses show that we have
achieved a good standard. But to ensure
we have satisfied customers, we
need to go a step further and invest in
the quality of our services over the
long term,” explains Nutzinger.
“That’s why we have now had
our product quality certified.” The
network certificate is valid for the
next three years. Bureau Veritas will
carry out further audits in the relevant
countries during this time in
order to verify independently that the
processes and guidelines are being
adhered to.
(combination of road and rail) sets out
all the requirements and is the basis
for 36 national companies. In addition,
land transport quality is monitored
constantly by means of operational
key performance indicators on the
basis of the three quality objectives.
The analysis of these indicators,
which is also part of the auditing process,
provides the basis for constantly
improving and further developing the
