2002 – 2012 Is it really ten years?

During 2001 (while away in Bruges with Greys!) I approached

Ray and Sylvia with the idea of taking over Greys Coach Travel

upon their retirement at the end of 2001. They seemed very

keen for me to carry on their good work and come January

1st 2002 a new dawn appeared for Greys Coach Travel.

They were both very supportive of me and their help and

judgement will always be appreciated.

The beginning didn’t go as smoothly as planned on our

very first day excursion to the Knitting and Stitching Show at

Sandown Park. The group had not been inside the exhibition

very long when there was a power cut and everybody had to

evacuate without any chance to return!

Our first tour was to see Daniel O’Donnell in Blackpool, the

first of many tours and day trips to see this very popular

Irishman.

Also in 2002 we ran holidays to Paris, Austria, the German

Christmas Markets and the 2002 Floriade, all places we are

returning to in 2012.

Now ten years down the line we have run nearly 200 holidays

and a 1000 day excursions.

2003 was soon upon us and I ran my first tour under Greys

to Nauders, my favourite destination. I had been here many

times before but taking my own group was special and we

are still taking groups to see Charly and his family at the

Hotel Hochland. I enjoy the place so much that we take

family holidays there as well now.

We also went to Roses in Spain for the first time this year

and what I thought was a big problem turned out a blessing.

About a week before we were due to depart I was informed

that the hotel we were booked in couldn’t now take us and

we would have to stay at a different hotel. I was not at all

pleased and fought my corner but in the end had no choice

but to change. To my pleasant surprise the hotel we were

changed to, the Coral Platja, was a far better hotel and we

have been going back to it ever since!

A first for Greys in 2004 was our Austrian Winter Wonderland

holiday in the February. When we left Petersfield there was

snow on the ground and when we arrived in Austria there

4

was none! I needn’t have worried as it started snowing during

dinner on our first evening in Fuschl and didn’t stop all week.

We stay at the hotel Mohrenwirt in Fuschl and will once again

be returning in 2012.

Prague was our first venture into Eastern Europe and it went

very well, paving the way for a possible Russian trip in the

future.

A week in Switzerland with perfect weather amongst the

glorious mountain scenery was a highlight from 2005 though

the biggest trip of the year was undoubtedly our first holiday

to Russia.

Russia was always a country I wanted to visit and in 2005

my dream came true. A difficult tour to both plan and

execute it was also an unforgettable experience for everyone

involved. There are too many stories to list here but some

of the standout moments were the border crossings into

Belarus and Russia, standing in Red Square, the Kremlin,

the Moscow Underground Stations, St Petersburg and its

beautiful buildings and waterways and the sheer thrill of being

in this fascinating country. The two feelings I remember most

are the point after we had crossed the border into Russia

and the realisation of what we had achieved and later that

night sitting in the hotel bar in Moscow with Ray sharing a

beer. We kept looking at each other laughing at the absurdity

of it all and ended up staying up late on pure adrenalin (and

a couple of piwo’s!). Fantastic.

We also operated our first Mystery Tour this year.

2006 saw a rise in day excursions and the production of our

first full colour holiday brochure. It was also the year Brian

joined as a full time driver.

We ran our first trip to the Edinburgh Tattoo and also to

Jersey. Further afield we went to Norway for a week and gave

Nauders a miss to return to Waidring, another of our Austrian

favourites.

There was also much sadness this year as Sylvia died, just

days after returning from our winter holiday to Austria.

2007 came and I tried to operate a flying holiday to Iceland.

Well, I did operate it but only had one passenger! The

holiday was sold amongst many other coach firms so plenty

of people went but only one from Greys! We returned to

Nauders once again and also visited the stunning Lake Bled

for the first time. Another far away destination was Poland

and the gorgeous Tatra Mountains. Scotland, Scarborough

and Newquay all stood out this year. Brian and I went horse

riding in Andorra and it was one of the funniest days I have

ever had. As terrified as I was I just couldn’t stop laughing for

the whole ride.

Christmas in Switzerland was our first Christmas holiday and

we have now done one every year since.

We had our busiest year in 2008 with some special holidays

including a return to Russia.

The country still fascinates me and this was another

adventure that I wouldn’t have missed for the world. The

biggest difference between this tour and three years ago is

the Moscow traffic. Before you drove about the city more

or less at your leisure but that is not possible now with the

centre gridlocked a lot of the time. The amount of vehicles

must have risen tenfold in three years.

We went to the Isles of Scilly for the first time and I think the

most memorable part for a lot of the group was the helicopter

flight between St Mary’s and Penzance.

There were also a lot of stories to come out of the tour to the

Lucerne Carnival in February of this year and too numerous

to mention here but I will say we certainly saw a lot of snow!

Too much snow at one point!

We also operated our first river cruise to Holland and only

just caught the boat!

Another popular holiday that we have since repeated and

are running in 2012 is to the Isle of Man and its railways.

In 2009 we went to Prague and Marianske Lasne in the Czech

Republic which was a great tour as was the Christmas in

Scotland and Nauders once again.

After the success of the Holland river cruise we cruised the

Rhine this year and what was a really great fun tour. I left

the coach in Bonn for a week and went on the boat as a

passenger. Splendid.

Croatia was also an extremely popular tour staying in the

lovely resort of Opatija. This is the same resort Greys went to

for their first continental holiday in 1987, though the country

was then still Yugoslavia. I can’t wait to return in 2012.

2010 saw a trip to the ten yearly Oberammergau Passion

Play. A great tour for the passengers but not so good for me

as there were only a dozen of them!

We returned to Holland for another Bulbfield Cruise and this

time stayed in Bruges for the first night to save any panic

over missing the boat! We went to Nauders for the sixth time

in nine years and it seems to get better with every trip we do

there.

2011 is not yet completed but already we have had a good

year starting with a couple of ski-ing weeks and including

tours to Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Warners Thoresby Hall,

two mystery tours at home and one abroad, Paington, a

Danube Cruise and the wonderfully named Cesky Krumlov.

This is an extremely brief resume of the last ten years, (I

would need a whole brochure to list everything!) and I hope

all those who have travelled with Greys have enjoyed their

holidays and all of those who haven’t travelled with us then I

hope this has given you a small insight into what we do. For

a more in depth look at some of our tours please go to our

website and read my blog!

Finally for all of our existing customers I would like to thank

you for your loyalty and custom and hope that you enjoy

many more holidays with Greys Coach Travel.

Jamie, Wendy and all at Greys.
