Message from

the President

Dear Friends,

The Chamber is continuing to grow and move

forward this year. In March we welcomed five

new directors to our Board. The Annual Luncheon

and Membership Meeting filled the room

to capacity and provided an opportunity to

highlight the success of Winterfest with an additional

$1,500 donation to the Mahwah Marine

Moms. It also kicked off the distribution of the

2012 Membership Directory and Buyer’s Guide.

This spring is blossoming with events. The

Taste of the Region was a great success. The

menu items listed by the over 20 restaurants

were delicious and the vendor tables were sold

out. The April 26th Meet & Greet hosted by TD

Bank followed with the same Director lead discussion

format that attracted 100 attendees and

generated 7 new members in January. Everyone

thoroughly enjoyed the May 3rd Annual

Mini-Golf Tournament at the Paramus Golf Club

followed by Dinner at Biaggio’s.

As we continue our commitment to helping

members make connections through technology

and social media, the chamber launched its

Facebook page on April 20th. Please send us

a “Friend Request” and comment on what’s

happening. Our office staff changed recently as

we bid a fond farewell and best wishes to

Megan Fanslau.

Please continue to use the Chamber as a valuable

resource to grow your business and make

connections. Feel free to contact us with any

suggestions at pscarduffa@mahwah.com or

www.mahwah.com.

Best regards,

2

DIRECT MAIL STATS

For anyone who may be evaluating the best

way to reach prospective new customers,

here’s some interesting new updates concerning

the success of direct mail marketing from

the 2011 DMA Statistical Fact Book

• 52.4% Percent of consumers read direct

mail from merchants. More than 53%

found merchant mail “useful” while 16.8%

responded to merchant mail offers.

• 55.6% Percent of respondents found catalogs

“useful” while 21.5% found catalogs

“interesting.”

• 51.4% Percent read postcards delivered by

mail with QR codes incorporated into the

layout. The result is interactive postcards

that bridge the gap between the businesses’

marketing presence offline and online.

• More than 12 billon catalogs and flyers

were mailed in 2011 to B&B and consumers.

• According to Media Week UK the net total

of magazines/publications in circulation in

the United States increased by 22% during

the first Q of 2011.

• Handwritten envelopes often have a higher

open rate than their more impersonal, laser

printed counterparts. There are handwriting

machines that churn out thousands of

authentic-looking handwritten mailers at a

greatly reduced cost for large mailings to

customers, non profits and prospects. ■

PASSING BY THE PUMP

With the rise in gas prices, we're all looking

for ways to make a tank go further. The

AARP Magazine offers up five habits of

highly efficient drivers from Tai Stillwater, a

transportation researcher at the University of

California, Davis. We thought this would be

useful information, especially to those who

have fleet vehicles.

1. Slow down. Driving five miles over 60

mph is like paying $ .29 more for each gallon

of gas you burn. And that number goes

up as your speed increases.

2. Drive smoothly. According to the EPA,

drivers who accelerate moderately and

evenly, and going easy on the brakes can

save as much as $1 gallon. The EPA also

recommends that you coast as often as

possible.

3. Lose the rack. Add-ons like bike and luggage

racks undermine your car’s aerodynamics.

You should also close windows

when driving on the highway to prevent

drag.

4. Clean out your trunk. Extra

weight in the back seat or

trunk makes the engine

work harder, and therefore

uses more gas than when

your car is empty.

5. Turn off the engine. Did

you know that 15 minutes

of idle time can burn a

quarter gallon of gas? And

that amount increases if the

air conditioner is on while

idling. ■

If you have any great tips for saving

gas, please forward them on

and we ll include them in the

Summer 2012 MRCC Newsletter

MAHWAH REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

GET MORE FROM YOUR MRCC MEMBERSHIP

Chambers exist to serve their members and help them to be

more successful. The difference between those who realize

the benefits of Chamber membership and those who don’t is

the individual’s level of involvement. Like most things in

life, what you put in is what you get out. Most businesses

benefit from membership and small businesses often benefit

dramatically from the power of joining together with peers.

Here are a few suggestions for getting the most from your

membership.

The MRCC members are listed in the Chamber directory

which is updated every year, but your opportunities for promoting

your business don't stop there. Aside from placing an

ad in the Directory, the MRCC website, newsletters,

brochures, and golf Journal are also available for ads. The

costs are modest, and if your target market includes other

Chamber members, the ROI can be fantastic.

Volunteering to serve on a Chamber committee that fits your

interests or expertise creates leadership opportunities, helps

you become better known in the community, and can help position

you as an expert in your field. It’s a great source for

business leads and ultimately can lead to a seat on the Chamber

Board of Directors if you so desire.

Businesses and residents that are new to a community frequently

call the local Chamber of Commerce for referrals for

the goods and services they need. If you're not a member, the

Chamber staff can't refer you. Take the time to get to know the

staff of your local Chamber, and make sure that they have the

information they need to send business your way.

Contribute an article for the newsletter – you’ll receive exposure

through a by-line, your logo linked to your web page and

a blurb about your business at the end of your article

Offer member-to-member discounts – If you’d like to generate

more business by offering a special discount to chamber

members or if you just have a great offer to advertise, post it

on the MRCC website at no charge

Sponsor one of the many MRCC events listed below and

speak about your company in front of a room full of fellow

members. You can give your message a boost and get it out

cost effectively. ■
