GTEC Metal Angle
Flooring
(22mm minimum)
Ceiling: two layers
of GTEC Fire Board
GTEC Resilient
Bar Deep
Installation
Step One
Place GTEC Acoustic Floor
Clip over joist and hold
against joist side. Secure by
driving the serrated edge of
the clip into the top of the
joist with a hammer.
Space clips either side of the
joist at 400mm centres.
Step Two
Lay GTEC Metal Angle
with the short leg into the
clips. GTEC Metal Angle
joints should be kept to a
minimum. Where the joins
occur, butt joint and support
ends with a clip. Where joists
are not true, cut Metal Angle
to suit.
Step Three
Cut lengths of GTEC 9mm
Plank or GTEC 5mm dB
Board 4mm shorter than
the space between the
joists, ensuring you keep
both bound edges intact.
Maintaining an even gap
between board and joist,
place the boards on the
GTEC Metal Angle supports
throughout.
Step Four
Fix self adhesive GTEC
Resilient Tape along the
length of each joist over the
GTEC Acoustic Floor Clips
and along intermediate
full depth and perimeter
noggings.
Step Four
Lay the flooring across the
joists at right angles. Tongueand-groove
chipboard edges
must be glued with PVA
wood glue. Leave a 3mm
gap between flooring and the
perimeter wall and seal the
gap with GTEC Intumescent
Acoustic Sealant before
skirtings are fitted. Screw fix
through flooring and boards
into GTEC Metal Angle using
GTEC Acoustic Floor screws at 300mm centres.
Step Six
The screws, when screwed
home and countersunk,
pull the GTEC Metal Angles
out of the clips to clamp
the board to the underside
of the flooring and create
a completely free-floating
floor supported on the GTEC
Resilient Tape.
Installation
Step One
Mark the position on walls
for the finished ceiling height,
taking into account the
thickness and number
of layers of plasterboard to
be used. Fix the GTEC T-Bar
Edge Channels to walls at
600mm maximum centres
(short length uppermost).
S Step Two A
Attach the GTEC Soffit
Cleats to the structural soffit
at 1200mm or 900mm
centres depending on the
load along the axis of the
Main T.
Cut lengths of the GTEC
Metal Angle equal to the
drop of the ceiling, from the
GTEC Soffit Cleats to the
start of the horizontal flange
(minimum drop 50mm).
S Step Two B
Fix the GTEC Metal Angle to
the GTEC Soffit Cleats with
the appropriate nuts and
bolts (GTEC Soffit Cleat is
not required for timber joist
floors).
Step Three
Fix the GTEC Main T-Bar
to the GTEC Metal Angles
with GTEC Pan Head Self
Tapping screws. To fix two
Main T’s, simply connect
It is not necessary to stagger
the GTEC Main T-Bar
connection.
Step Four
S Step Five
Fix the GTEC T-Bar Primary
Cross T-Bar to the GTEC
Main T-Bar at typical 400mm
centres to form grid pattern.
Push-fit until clip is locked
into position, with the triangle
shape (spring side) of the
clip visible on each side.
To remove the GTEC Cross
T, press on end of connector
clip and pull out (may
require some slight twisting).
Screw fix the plasterboard
at 230mm max centres and
Installation
Step One
Mark the position on walls
for the finished ceiling height
taking into account the
thickness and number of
layers of plasterboard to be
used. Fix the GTEC T-Bar
600mm maximum centres
(short length uppermost).
Step Two
Cut the GTEC T-Bar Corridor
Span T as required to the
corridor width and slide
into the GTEC T-Bar Edge
Channel, at recommended
centres (400 or 450mm).
If hangers are required (see
span table), fix the GTEC
Corridor T-Bar to the GTEC
screws.
Step Three
Position the boards with long
edges typically parallel to the
GTEC T-Bar Edge Channel
with adjoining edges lightly
butted. End joints must occur
at the centre of the GTEC
Corridor Span T section,
staggered by half a board
length whenever possible.
Screw fix the plasterboard
at 230mm max centres with
GTEC Self Tapping screws
on the GTEC Span T. Screw
fix the cut edges of the
GTEC Direct to Timber Ceiling
The Lafarge GTEC Direct to Timber System is the method for attaching
plasterboard to the underside of timber floor joists and roof trusses.
Features & Benefits
Where to use
• Lining new ceilings, typically for
domestic use.
• Lining existing ceilings.
• Provides fire resistance and sound
insulation where required.
GTEC Noggins
With two layers of boarding, stagger
joints and fixings between layers
Benefits
• Quick and simple to install.
• When taped and jointed it provides
a smooth finish for direct decoration.
• Forms a ready base for gypsum plaster
or textured finishes.
Stagger joints between cut (short)
edges and centre over joists or
noggins
Installation
Standard Installation
Fix noggings around the ceiling perimeter and, if required, to support any board edges not already supported
by joists.
Offer up plasterboards with their paper bound (long) edges at right angles to the joists. Butt board edges
lightly against each other with a maximum allowable gap of 3mm. Working from the centre of each board,
fix with nails at 150mm centres or screws at 230mm centres, and 150mm centres at perimeter and the cut
ends of board. Fixings should be no closer than 10mm to the bound edges and 13mm to the cut edges of
the boards. The fixings should also be at least 6mm in from edges of timber framing.
GTEC Resilient Bar Deep Installation
When GTEC Resilient Bar Deep is required to achieve added acoustic performance, fix the bars at right
angles to the joists at 450mm maximum centres, 400mm for 2400mm wallboard, through prepunched holes
in the flange using 32mm GTEC High Thread. Set out the Resilient Bars as close as possible to the room
perimeter. Do not let the GTEC Resilient Bars touch the perimeter wall. Joint the bars by overlapping directly
over joists, with a minimum 200mm overlap.
Fix plasterboards with long edges at right angles to GTEC Resilient Bars using GTEC Self Tapping, ensuring
screws are not in contact with the joists. For two layer boarding layouts, stagger the outer layer and fix short
edges of the boards to GTEC Resilient Bars.
Plasterboard Selection and Finishing
Where there may be risk of interstitial condensation, use GTEC Vapour Board as the inner layer of the ceiling,
with the metallised film facing the joists. If GTEC Fire Board is used it must always be used as the outer layer.
Installation
Step One
Apply a chalk line to floor
and ceiling, allowing for
the thickness of selected
plasterboard or thermal
laminate, plus a minimum
10mm of GTEC Universal
Bonding Compound.
Step Two
Starting from a window, door
reveal or internal angle, mark
wall vertically with chalk for
the rows of dabs at the
required centres.
Allow for dabs at 25mm in
from vertical edges of board.
Step Three
On external walls apply
continuous perimeter ribbon
of GTEC Universal Bonding
Compound at 50mm below
ceiling line and 50mm above
floor level.
A continuous perimeter
should also be applied
around any service cut
out i.e. light switches.
Step Four
Apply vertical dabs at
required centres on the chalk
lines. Dabs should be 50 to
75mm wide, about 250mm
long at 300mm centres and
between 10 to 25mm thick.
The contact area of dabs
must be at least 20% of the
board area.
Step Five
Press plasterboard back
firmly against the dabs, fitting
the board tight against the
ceiling. Temporarily wedge
the bottom edge in position
using offcuts.
At corners, align
as shown in the application
details. Ensure tight butt
joints at junctions.
Step Six
Tap board into alignment
with floor and ceiling chalk
lines using a straight edge.
Remove wedges when the
compound has dried (allow
8 hours).
For thermal laminates,
secure with two GTEC
Nailable Plugs after
GTEC Universal Bonding
Compound has set.
Step One
Fix GTEC Dryliner Track at
600mm centres to the floor
using suitable fixings. Allow
for required cavity width
(25mm to 130mm).
Step Two
Fix GTEC Dryliner Track to
ceiling with a suitable fixing,
ensuring GTEC Dryliner Track
at ceiling is plumb with that
on the floor. For 12.5mm
plasterboard mark horizontal
lines at 800mm centres
and vertical lines at 600mm
centres (400mm for GTEC
Thermal Boards). Mark lines
50mm from external corners.
Step Three
Starting at centre of wall
height, position GTEC
Dryliner Brackets directly
to wall at maximum 800mm
vertical centres on the
marked lines. Secure each
bracket to wall with a suitable
fixing.
Step Four
Cut each GTEC Dryliner
Channel 5mm shorter than
the floor to ceiling height.
Locate GTEC Dryliner
Channel into GTEC Dryliner
Track at floor and ceiling.
Step Five
Ensure channel is plumb,
and secure to each bracket
leg using GTEC Pan Head
Self Tapping screws. Where
necessary bend back the
legs of the bracket so they do
not protrude past the face of
the channel.
Step Six
Butt plasterboard edges
lightly against each other and
centre the edges over the
channels. Fix plasterboard to
framing with GTEC Drywall
Self Tapping screws at
300mm centres. Where the
height of the lining is greater
than the plasterboard length,
use GTEC Fixing Channel (or
GTEC Flat Strap for double
boarded systems) to support
the horizontal cut edges of the plasterboards.
Install a GTEC C Stud using
a spirit level to plumb,
upright on end wall, and fix
at 600mm centres using
suitable fixings.
Step Three
Install ceiling GTEC U Track
onto the end wall GTEC C
Stud, using a GTEC I Stud (as
a temporary prop) and spirit
level. Plumb the opposite end
of the ceiling GTEC U Track to
align with floor GTEC U Track.
Screw-fix the ceiling GTEC U
Track into position at 600mm
centres or less.
Now fix the opposite end wall
GTEC C Stud at 600mm
centres.
Step Four
Using a disc cutter, drop-saw
or angle grinder, cut GTEC
I Studs to length (5mm
shorter than the floor to
ceiling height) whilst they are
in a pack. If ceiling or floor
are very uneven, you will
need to cut GTEC I Studs
separately.
Step Five
Insert the stud into the floor
and ceiling tracks and twist to
lock. Position them at 600mm
centres for 1200mm wide,
12.5mm thick plasterboard.
Once the GTEC I Studs are
friction-fitted, fix the end GTEC
C Studs to head and floor
GTEC U Tracks with GTEC
Wafer Head Self Drilling
screws or crimping tool.
Step Six
Cut the plasterboard 5 to
8mm shorter than the floorto-ceiling
height, butt firmly
against the ceiling and fix
to the framing with GTEC
Drywall Self Drilling screws
at 300mm centres.
Butt board edges lightly
against each other and
centre the edges over the
studs.
Linings to Timber Frame
In timber framed housing the Lafarge Lining to Timber Frame System
offer easy fixing to light-weight constructions. The high strength and rigidity
of Lafarge plasterboards make them suitable for use in the assembly of
prefabricated panels which are braced with sheathing ply or similar.
Features & Benefits
System Assembly
• Typically, timber framed external walls
have studs set out at 400mm or 600mm
centres to maximise economical use of
the lining materials.
• Use 12.5mm GTEC Boards with a vapour
control layer. This prevents interstitial
condensation forming in the wall cavity.
Insulation
• Insulation should be supported using
GTEC Insulation Hold strips 150mm below
the wall head and at 1200mm centres
down the height of the wall.
Minimum 50mm cavity between
sheathing and external wall
Boarding
• For internal linings, lightly butt
plasterboard edges against each other:
the maximum permissible gap is 3mm.
Fix the boards with GTEC High Thread
screws at 300mm centres. Fixings should
be no closer than 10mm to the bound
edges and 13mm to the cut edges of the
boards.
GTEC Resilient Bars
• Where the GTEC Resilient Bar Deep is
to be fixed to timber studs the following
way. To allow adjustment
when fixing plasterboard
studs should not be screw
fixed.
Step Four
Use GTEC Starter Studs
at door openings, corners,
T junctions and stop ends.
These must be fixed to
ceiling and floor GTEC U
Tracks with GTEC Wafer
Head Self Tapping or
a crimping tool. Form
door header from GTEC
U Track, allowing for a
minimum 150mm at each
end to be cut and folded
down. Secure the header to the GTEC Starter Studs using a
crimping tool or GTEC Wafer Head Self Tapping.
Step Five
Form a timber background
construction to create a
secure fixing for the door
frame by placing a suitably
sized timber insert into the
back of door frame Studs
and header Track. Secure
these timbers using GTEC
Step Six
Fix GTEC Acoustic
Homespan Board to one
side of the partition. Cut
the board 5mm to 8mm
shorter than the floor to
ceiling height, butt firmly
against the ceiling and
fix with 25mm GTEC
Self Tapping at 300mm
centres. When one side is
complete, repeat for the
other side of the partition,
ensuring that the joints are staggered by 450mm. To
maximise the acoustic performance use GTEC Intumescent
Acoustic Sealant and seal around system perimeter.
Installation
GTEC Boards
Metal Components & Fixings
Step One
Install timber sole plate and framing members to end walls and ceiling.
Ensure all framing is straight, plumb and true, and will provide a firm
support for the plasterboards.
Step Two
Fix intermediate vertical studs to the timber floor and ceiling plates at
maximum 400mm centres for 9.5mm plasterboard, and at 600mm centres
for 12.5mm and 15mm plasterboard. Framing should be arranged so as to
avoid plasterboard widths of less than 300mm. Plasterboard edges must be
supported at all openings, junctions and corners. All framing should provide
a minimum bearing width for the plasterboard of not less than 38mm. Note:
For all 900mm wide plasterboards, stud centres should be at 450mm.
Step Three
Cut plasterboard 5mm to 8mm shorter than the floor-to-ceiling height,
butt firmly against the ceiling and fix with GTEC Drywall Nails at 150mm
centres or GTEC High Thread at 300mm centres. Butt plasterboards
lightly against each other, centring joints over the studs. With double layer
boarding, the vertical joints should be staggered between layers.
GTEC Plasterboards
Lafarge GTEC Plasterboard Solutions offer a wide range of standard
boards and high performance plasterboards for all your drywall needs,
providing higher levels of protection against impact, sound, moisture
Installation
Step One
Using a chalk line strike
guidelines on ceiling and
wall to the correct projection
and depth: 64mm for 90mm
GTEC Cove, 84mm for
120mm GTEC Cove.
Step Two
Using the guidelines on
the wall drive in nails at
1500mm centres to act as
a temporary support while
the cove adhesive sets.
Step Three
Using a fine-toothed saw cut
all the pieces of cove
to length and mitre to fit the
corners of the room. The
mitres can be cut using a
mitre block or template.
Templates are available from
Lafarge Literatureline or
www.lafargeplasterboard.
co.uk
Step Seven
Using GTEC Cove Adhesive fill any gaps between the cove
and the wall or ceiling. Make good all internal and external
junctions.
Step Eight
Remove all temporary nails once the cove adhesive has
set and fill nail holes.
Step Four
Mix the GTEC Cove
Adhesive as per instructions
on the bag. Apply the
adhesive to the back of the
cove along its full length on
the surfaces that meet wall
and ceiling.
Step Five
Sit the lengths of cove
on the nails and press
into position between the
guidelines, carefully lining
up joints and intersections.
Step Six
Clean off surplus adhesive
with filling knife and smooth
using a sponge.
Step Nine
Using a damp sponge, clean off any adhesive residue from
the walls, ceiling and cove surface.
Step Ten
Apply one coat of GTEC Universal Sealer, or if a vapour
control layer is required use two coats of GTEC Drywall
Sealer, and decorate as required.
Part E: What you need to know
Part E: What you need to know
Part E of the Building Regulations are the new legal
requirements governing the quality of acoustics in
buildings where people sleep.
Part E puts the onus on the builder to demonstrate that
the stated acoustic rating has been achieved.
Part E - How to comply
If you are looking to build...
• semi detached
• terraced housing
• apartments
• hotels, hostels
• residential rooms
Your separating walls, ceiling and floors must
adhere to the new acoustic rating.
There are 2 routes you can take
Pre-Completion Testing (PCT)
The requirement of Part E calls for sample pre-completion testing of separating
walls and floors prior to handover. The number of tests required will depend on the
number of dwellings in each development. Part E states that a minimum of one
set of tests is required for every ten dwellings of each construction type on a
development.
Steps:
1. You will need to contact a test body which has the appropriate
third party accreditation.
2. They will visit and complete acoustic field testing of 10% of all
separating walls and floors.
3. Compliance with these performance requirements will be checked
by Building Control.
For further information on the PCT, including how to apply for PCT,
please refer to an acoustic consultant for guidance or Building Control.
Robust Details Ltd (RDL)
The use of Robust Details provides an alternative to pre-completion testing. RDL will
give you a choice of possible construction solutions to comply with Part E. However
this only applies to new build houses and flats.
Steps:
1. Register the property’s use with RDL for each plot and pay a plot registration fee.
2. Registration documents are then sent to you.
3. Once the separating walls and floors in each house are completed, fill in the compliance certificate and
hand it to the Building
Control body.
4. Provided the constructions are built correctly this will be accepted by all building control bodies.
For more information on the Robust Details scheme, including how to apply, contact Robust Details Limited.
The floor joists are correctly braced with noggings as
specified - if not adequately restrained, the floor will
be structurally weak and more prone to ‘squeaking’.
The holes and notches for services are correctly
positioned - in the wrong position holes and notches
will weaken the floor joists.
When using the GTEC Resilient Bars make sure
that the board fixing screws do not coincide with the
floor joists.
Mark the position of floor joists on adjoining walls
so that screw fixings can be positioned either side
of the joists.
In new build and renovation, fixing plasterboard
Part L: What do you need to know?
Part L:
What do you need to know?
Part L regulation was effective as of the 6 April, 2006. New Part L is an
upgrade of the Building Regulations 2000 broken down into 4 sections.
1. L1A is work in new dwellings
2. L1B is work in existing dwellings
3. L2A New buildings other than
dwellings
4. L2B is work in existing buildings
not dwellings
Part L - Focus is on:
• Conservation of fuel and power
• Further reducing carbon emissions
However the whole building envelope must be considered not just individual
elements. For drywall industry the following two criteria are the most important:
• Calculate the CO 2 Dwelling Emission Rate (DER),
based on a Standard Assessment Program (SAP
2005), is no greater than the Target Emission
Rate (TER) using a formula which takes into
account all energy consumption, including the
effect of solar gain.
• Limits on design flexibility (limiting U value) and
fixed building services are compliant.
Also to be considered are:
• Part F Air Tightness - Supply air permeability
test certificate.
• In conjunction with Part L, Part F also changed
at the same time because it worked together
to ensure the overall energy efficiency of the
building.
Installation
• Installers must ensure junction details are
installed correctly especially at ceilings
and wall junctions.
Make sure...
The dabs for the wallboard lining are continuous at
the wall perimeter and to door and window frames
- this helps to seal airpaths behind the wallboard.
There are continuous dabs of plaster around the
socket outlets.
The gap at the base of the wallboard is filled with
GTEC Intumescent Acoustic Sealant.
Direct bonding of plasterboard provides a fast,
efficient means of lining masonry and offers a dry
solution calling for skills more readily acquired than
traditional plastering. Extensively used in volume
house building and smaller projects for more than
30 years it continues to provide a highly cost-effective
means of complying with Building Regulations.
• Overall: nominal thickness 347mm
with maximum height 5.2m
The thermal lining is the correct insulation type
and thickness. The different types of insulation
vary significantly in performance. Installing the
wrong type and thickness could seriously
increase heat loss.
The mineral wool installed between studs
is the correct thickness, and free from gaps.
