friendly practices. Thanks to 

the commitment to improve 

fuel efficiency made by many

Transport Partner logo, the U.S. 

Environmental Protection Agency’s 

(EPA) symbol for superior fuel 

efficiency and environmental

current highest ranking for 

transport partners of 1.25, a score 

which represents outstanding 

environmental performance. 

Attaining this recognition

logo with their email signatures

The SmartWay Transport 

Partnership is a collaborative 

effort between EPA and the 

freight industry to improve the 

impact of freight transport on the 

environment. Landstar became a 

SmartWay partner in 2006. 

Landstar Acquires Premier Logistics and A 3 Integration 

Calling the development “an exciting day in 

the continuing evolution of Landstar,” Landstar 

President and CEO Henry Gerkens announced 

the acquisition of two supply chain transportation 

integration companies, Premier Logistics, Inc. 

and A 3 Integration LLC (A 3 i). 

Premier Logistics specializes in dynamic 

freight management solutions for customers 

through its proprietary Web-based software. 

The Detroit-based company’s operating 

subsidiaries, National Logistics Management 

(NLM) and Interactive Capacity Gateway LLC 

(ICG), provide Web-based bidding, scheduling, 

shipping, tracking and reporting, as well as 

complete real-time visibility for customers to 

follow inbound and outbound shipments. 

A 3 i, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has built 

its reputation in the marketplace by providing 

customers with Web-based transportation and 

supply chain management technologies to 

optimize the complete order-to-cash process.

It often only takes minutes – 

sometimes even seconds – to 

occur, but for many owneroperators 

the devastating 

effects of cargo theft can be 

long lasting. Not only is there 

a stolen load, but for drivers 

the consequences can be a 

missing truck and loss of 

income. With numerous 

reports from law enforcement 

agencies across the country 

indicating that cargo theft is 

on the rise, BCOs need to 

take every possible measure 

to ensure that they don’t 

become a statistic. 

BCOs should always be 

vigilant of their surroundings 

and report all suspicious activity 

to local law enforcement. High 

risk cargo, such as electronics, 

is often targeted by thieves 

who follow the truck while 

the driver is unaware. Also 

visibility and supply chain event management 

solutions, all with multi-lingual, multi-currency 

and multi-modal capabilities. 

Premier Logistics, under the leadership 

of President Scott Taylor, and A 3 i led by 

President Lorne Darnell, will operate as separate 

subsidiaries of Landstar Supply Chain Solutions, 

Inc., a newly-formed company which will be 

headed by Landstar Global Logistics President 

Jim Handoush.

Landstar on the cutting edge of the transportation 

and logistics industry when combined with our 

existing information technology platform and the 

array of domestic and international services we 

offer,” said Gerkens. “They represent tremendous

transportation and logistics capacity providers 

alike. I am pleased to welcome the employees 

of Premier and A 3 i to the Landstar team.” 

Don’t Become a Victim of Cargo Theft

remember, truck stops are not 

secure parking locations and 

can be prime target areas for 

cargo theft. 

Loads are most vulnerable 

during a stop the first few 

minutes after the driver exits the 

truck. It’s good to get in a habit 

of checking your surroundings 

to see if you’re being staked 

out by cargo thieves. The most 

important things that BCOs can 

do to avoid becoming a victim is 

follow policy and use all locks, 

especially the king pin lock. 

The absolute best way to protect 

your load, however, is to stay 

with it at all times. 

BCOs are also advised to 

drive a minimum of 150 miles 

from pickup prior to stopping. 

However, just because a BCO 

has driven the minimum 

distance does not necessarily 

mean they are in a safe zone, 

especially if that minimum 

distance places them in one 

of the current hot spots for 

cargo theft. These include all 

stops and cities along I-40 

throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas 

and Tennessee. Other key theft 

areas include Texas, Florida, 

Georgia, Northern and Southern 

California, Kentucky, Ontario 

and Quebec.

Awards 

Outstanding Management Achievement Award 

The 2008 Landstar Outstanding 

Management Achievement Award winner, 

Mike Cobb, got more than an unexpected 

honor. He also got a good dose of razzing 

from Landstar President and CEO 

Henry Gerkens. 

“This year, the winner has the 

commitment it takes to earn this award, as 

well as the commitment to sit outdoors, 

in minus 20 degree weather for 5 hours, 

only to watch his team, the Green Bay 

Packers, lose to my team, the New York 

Giants, in overtime, in an NFL Conference 

Championship game,” Gerkens teased, 

presenting Cobb with a New York Giants 

football helmet. 

Gerkens later presented him with the real 

award, for “being a knowledgeable and 

fair-minded team player,” demonstrating 

a clear understanding of Landstar’s

In this very competitive environment,

Landstar’s long-standing reputation as 

a safety-first provider of transportation 

Pate Morrison of Anniston, Alabama, 

is the January LSO of the Month. Morrison 

and his staff are supporters of the Landstar 

safety culture. They participate in the 

Safety Thursday Conference Call and 

hold an annual safety meeting at the 

ANN terminal in April. 

Linda Davis in Houston, Texas, is the 

February LSO of the Month. Davis and 

her staff routinely participate in the Safety 

Thursday Conference Call. The agency 

also participated in the M.U.S.T. program 

in conjunction with a Houston customer. 

Jim Hill in Owosso, Michigan, is 

the March LSO of the Month. Safety 

mission, a commitment to excellence 

and a willingness to take on additional 

responsibility. Each year candidates are 

nominated by senior management based 

on their effective leadership and 

managerial skills. 

Cobb joined Landstar in 1992 as 

a Maintenance Coordinator in the 

Trailer department. He became a 

Safety Specialist, then a Safety 

Supervisor, and was promoted to 

Director of Safety Services in 1997. In 

2006, he was promoted to Vice President 

of Safety, Security and Loss Prevention. 

Cobb was praised for innovative and 

practical solutions such as technologybased 

safety training for BCOs over 

classroom training. 

“Under Mike’s leadership, participation 

in and awareness of Landstar’s safety 

logistics solutions is not simply a line in 

our press releases, unlike some competitors 

who make similar claims. The initiatives 

that are unique and long-standing – the 

M.U.S.T. program, LSOs and the Safety 

Thursday Conference Call – are each 

designed as outreach tools to be used 

to differentiate Landstar, to move the 

discussion away from “rates” toward a 

conversation about “value.” Landstar has 

more than just programs; we have the 

results to prove it. The results stem from 

the time, effort and energy that our agent 

and capacity network have put forth to 

earn them. Our awards are many, our 

statistics are impressive and our history is 

unmatched. It is a good story to tell.

damage free shipments. A record turnout 

of 187 people attended LAN’s annual 

February safety meeting. 

Brad Baker in Plano, Texas, is the 

April LSO of the Month. Brad and the 

agency have been active participants in 

the M.U.S.T. program. Working with a 

customer, the agency was able to identify 

a more secure way to transport the 

customer’s freight. 

Sue Johnston in Vancouver, Washington, 

is the May LSO of the Month. Sue and

result, Landstar had its three safest 

years in the company’s history under

The DJV agency co-hosts a monthly Safety 

Meeting at the Jubitz Travel Center in 

Portland, Oregon, and also participates in

Bill Crosson in Gadsden, Alabama, is 

the June LSO of the Month. The GAD 

agency hosts an annual February safety 

meeting. The agency recently completed 

its BCO Resource Center where BCOs 

have access to computers to search for 

freight and agency staff is readily available 

to answer questions.

Agents attending the 2009 Agent 

Convention in Marco Island, Florida, saw 

a change in the awards program this year. 

What was known as the Landstar Agent 

Quality Awards was replaced by two 

new awards – the Star Performance and 

Universal Agent Awards. 

The Star Performance awards honor 

agents who have demonstrated star 

qualities in revenue performance, and 

participation in Landstar initiatives in the 

past year.

Scholarship Winners 

Twenty students have been selected 

to receive scholarships in the amount of 

$2,500 each from the Landstar Scholarship 

Fund. The names were announced in March 

at Landstar’s Annual Convention. There 

were 83 eligible applications for the 2009- 

2010 scholarships. In the past 11 years, 

Landstar has awarded 148 scholarships 

for a total of more than $302,000. 

The Landstar Scholarship Fund was 

established in 1995 to recognize and 

reward outstanding undergraduate and 

civic involvement. Scholarship recipients 

are well-rounded individuals who succeed 

both in and out of the classroom and whose 

qualities exemplify Landstar’s commitment 

to excellence.

center owners; children of employees of 

these independent contractors, as well as

have successfully completed a minimum of 

12 credit hours and be planning to

It’s going to take more than a sagging 

economy to keep these dedicated and 

determined men and women off the 

open road. As the CEOs of their own 

businesses, they’ll continue to drive 

forward one of the most dynamic 

segments of the transportation industry.

LCAPP Fuel $avings 

Diesel fuel’s rise to record highs in 

2008 put the squeeze on owner-operators, 

forcing many to cut back on expenses in 

order to keep rolling. 

One strategy Landstar BCOs relied 

on to keep their costs on an even keel 

was the LCAPP discount fuel purchase 

program. In total, BCOs received more 

than $12 million in rebates through 

“cost plus” and “cents off” pricing. 

BCOs like James Spangler are pumped 

up over the savings, to put it mildly. 

“I saved more than $1,000 each 

quarter, or about 30 cents a gallon less 

than the pump price, in fuel costs since 

I started participating in the program,” 

says Spangler. “I really enjoy having the 

services available. It puts money into my 

pocket instead of someone else’s.” 

Because Spangler also plans every 

detail of his trip in advance and prefers to 

run his truck on premium fuel, he benefits 

from the fuel purchase program in more 

ways than one. 

“I like to plan my trips in advance, 

I even map out my fuel stops,” says 

Spangler. “I make the program work to 

my advantage by calling ahead to get 

the next day’s fuel price.” 

BCOs can say hello to “cost plus” fuel 

savings at most TravelCenters of America 

and Petro locations. “Cost plus” is based 

on the price the truck stop pays to obtain 

fuel plus a pump fee of a few cents per 

gallon. To get the price, call 800-494- 

FUEL (3835) and punch in the 

location code using LCAPP’s Rapid 

Rebate Directory.

Locations that offer the “cents off” 

discount are also in the directory. But 

regardless of the type of discount, drivers 

must first pay full price at the pump 

before the rebate is applied to their 

Comdata card following the transaction. 

“When the cost of diesel fuel went up, 

I stopped to refuel at places that offered 

‘cents off’ pricing,” said Spangler. “And 

when prices went down, I filled my truck 

up at locations that offered ‘cost plus’ 

pricing. You wouldn’t believe how much 

money I saved.”

driver’s actual activities and duty status. This includes time and 

location of each duty status change and the time spent in each 

duty status. Any and all records that are time and date stamped – 

such as fuel and toll receipts and previous roadside inspections – 

can be used by officers as supporting documentation to verify the 

accuracy of the record of duty status. False logs will result in 

a driver being placed out of service for ten consecutive hours.

The Heavy/Specialized Rate Quote System on Landstar 

Online has proven to be quite popular with Landstar agents. 

“The response has been overwhelming,” says Jim Tate, 

Landstar Director Heavy/Specialized Support Services. “About 

85 percent of all rate quotes are being generated online.” 

Rate quotes can be completed by agents or submitted to 

corporate for legal or oversize/overweight loads up to 100 feet 

long, 12 feet wide, 14 feet high and 120,000 pounds. For loads 

exceeding the gross vehicle dimension and weight guidelines, 

the system will direct agents to “Submit to Corporate” (Heavy/ 

Specialized Support Services).

Tie downs and cargo securement devices must be in proper 

working order. Roadside out-of-service criteria includes: One 

defective strap (cut, burn, hole, knot or splice) or one defective 

chain (broken, cracked, twisted, bent, knotted or stretched links). 

If cargo is not positioned against headerboard or bulkhead, 

additional straps or chains must be applied to prevent forward 

movement. Bungee cords are not recognized by DOT as a 

securement device.

Pundt Earns Lifetime Achievement Award 

A heartfelt message of thanks went out 

to the audience from Landstar Government 

Services Liason Jeff Pundt as he accepted 

the Jeffrey C. Crowe-Robert E. Zonneville 

Lifetime Achievement Award in front of his 

peers at the Landstar Annual Convention in 

Marco Island at the end of March. 

“This is a great company,” he said, praising 

the Landstar agents, BCOs and fellow 

employees attending the ceremony. 

“But I wouldn’t have been able to do any of 

it without the support of my wife Marsha, 

who raised our kids and was there to support 

me over the past 35 years.” Together they 

have two grown children and one grandson. 

Pundt has been a part of the Landstar 

family since its beginning in 1988, and 

part of one of the companies that formed 

Landstar prior to that. In 1996, he became 

President of Landstar Inway, later, President 

of the Carrier Group, and prior to his current 

position as Government Services Liason, 

he was Vice President of Corporate 

Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens 

and Landstar Government Services Liason

“His dedication to this company and its 

mission is indisputable,” said Landstar 

President and CEO Henry Gerkens. “He 

has always been willing to take on new 

assignments with an open mind and a straight 

forward approach.” 

Landstar first presented the lifetime 

achievement award in 1994, when Landstar 

Chairman Jeff Crowe established the annual

award in honor of Bob Zonneville, also a 

former Landstar Inway President. The award 

was renamed four years ago to honor both 

men. Award nominees are individuals, like 

Pundt, who have not only taken the road to 

success, but have also led the way for others. 

“Over the years, Jeff has touched so many 

at Landstar influencing a variety of segments 

from Operations to Sales, including: 

Automotive, Government Services, National 

Accounts and Specialized and Heavy Haul 

Services,” said Gerkens. 

Well respected by his peers, he has also 

held positions of influence with a number 

of associations. Pundt is currently Chairman 

of the National Defense Transportation 

Association’s Surface Committee and 

formerly the Chairman of the NDTA 

Munitions Sub-Committee. He has 

served on the Board of Directors of the 

Truckload Carriers Association and as a 

Director for the Specialized Carriers and 

Rigging Association.
