FROM THE DIRECTOR OF RECREATION

The New Year is upon us and now is a great opportunity

to get your children involved in creative activities and

programs that offer constructive use of time in a safe,

caring environment. These activities allow your children

to build their self-esteem and foster positive relationships

with their peers.

Youth development is a focus of the Recreation

Department. Programs are developed to allow youth to

experience increased self-confidence, success in learning new skills, teamwork,

goal setting, education planning and decision making. In short, our programs are

intentionally designed to develop life skills that help youth become successful,

responsible adults.

We invite you to look through this program brochure and discover the variety

of programs that are offered for preschoolers, school-age children, teens and

adults. Whether you choose to join one of our youth or adult sports leagues, an

instructional class, utilize the dog park or skate park, or just drop by and take a

walk in one of the City parks, we welcome you to our programs and facilities.

The City strives to keep these programs affordable and accessible for our

citizens. Please call us at 619-441-1516 with questions or go online to www.

elcajonrec.org.

Everyone in the Recreation Department would like to wish you a safe and

happy holiday season and outstanding New Year.

“In great appreciation for your scholarship fund…I’m writing to say

‘Many Thanks!’ We are seniors and are raising our 6 year old granddaughter.

Putting her in your classes has greatly increased her self-esteem and

Fletcher Hills Pool is shallow the full length (25 yards) and is an ideal

“learning” pool. Depths range from three feet to four and one half feet. Our

major program emphasis is on “learn to swim” classes for children. We also

offer lap swimming for adults. Swim lessons are based on American Red

Cross guidelines of swimming and water safety.

The pool is closed for the Winter months. Please look for swim

classes to start in Spring 2013. For more information please call

PARENT TOT

Ages 18 mos. – 3years

This class is designed to introduce parent and

child to the basics of water safety. Parents are

required to participate in the water with their

child. Water adjustment skills are stressed and our

goal is to make the child happy and comfortable

in the water.

TINY TOTS Ages 3-5

Learn basic water adjustment, safety and survival

skills, and beginning skills. Our goal is to teach the

tots to be happy and comfortable in the water, to

be “water safe” as much as possible (floating and

safety skills), and to learn a form of locomotion,

usually a modified crawl stroke. Some tots progress

only as far as the water adjustment phases,

others master a crawl stroke. We adjust our tot

classes to meet the skill levels of the children, and

allow them to progress as far as they are capable.

Child must be able to participate without parent

being present and be able to attend to their own

toileting needs.
