Samsung Heavy Industries
breaks new ground for the
Korean shipbuilding industry,
putting an end to the longstanding
domination of the
cruise ship market by
European shipbuilders
- The company pioneers premium
apartment type cruise ship market
with cabins on sales to individuals.
Following a USD 1.1 billion bid, Samsung
Heavy Industries was selected as the sole
contractor to build a cruise ship for Utopia,
a US-based cruise owner and operator, on
November 30, 2009.
Samsung Heavy Industries has
announced that it will become the first
Korean company to make inroads into the
cruise ship market, a market considered to
be the last remaining stronghold for EU
shipbuilders.
The cruise ship that Samsung Heavy
Industries has been contracted to build is a
new-concept apartment-type cruise ship,
which will combine state-of-the-art shipbuilding
and architectural technologies.
Differentiated from regular cruise ships
which are operated for short-term travelers
who travel for about 10 days, apartmenttype
cruise ships are characterized by the
sale of cabins to individuals who can enjoy
long-term trips at their own summer houses.
This type of cruise ship is not aimed at regular
travelers, but at a small and elite market.
The ship will drop anchor for several
months in countries hosting large global
events such as the World Cup, the
Olympic Games and the Cannes Festival
for months, in order to enable passengers
to enjoy cultural experiences in a leisurely

manner. While the area of a typical cabin
on a regular cruise ship is 23m 2 (7 pyong),
the apartment-type cruise ships include
204 hotel suites and 200 apartment-type
cabins with areas ranging from 132m 2 (40
pyong) to 594m 2 (180 pyong). Cabins are
like premium apartments on the land, as
each cabin includes two to three bedrooms,
a kitchen, a living room, as well as
a high-speed Internet network and a bar.
Unlike other cruise ships in the same size
range that accommodate more than 3,000
passengers, this cruise ship limits the number
of passengers to 900, providing a
more pleasant environment tailored to the
needs of the passengers. Customers can
also design their cabin according to their
preferences.
Samsung Heavy Industries announced
that it would enter into the contract in the
first half of 2010 and deliver the ship to the
client in 2013 after fixing detailed specifications
through the development of basic
design.
Samsung Heavy Industries said its successful
entry into the cruise shipbuilding
market, a goal of Korean shipbuilding
companies for many years, were attributed
to company’s thorough preparations over
the past 13 years and the synergies created
through the expertise and know-how
that it has built in the construction field
while building the Tower Palace and
Chereville, Samsung’s premium residential
complexes, and Lafolium, the premium
town house.
In other words, that was enabled by a
series of preparations that Samsung
Heavy Industries has made since it
launched its passenger ship team in 1997
first-ever in the industry; like building up the
experience in constructing eight large passenger
ships which is a phase required
before the cruise ship phase, developing a
database of core technologies related to
noise, vibrations, interior design, lifesaving
devices and fire extinguisher deployment
for global cruise ships, and developing
independent cruise design and navigation
control system.
The large passenger ship that Samsung
Heavy Industries delivered to a client in the
Netherlands in 2005 was named the
world’s best passenger ship of that year,
and the company also built its credibility by
developing an eco-friendly passenger ship
that reduced gas emissions by more than
90% in July 2009, paving the way for the
company’s successful entry into the cruise
shipbuilding market.
Meanwhile, industry experts have been
highlighting the need for domestic shipbuilders
to enter the cruise shipbuilding
market considering that China has speeded
up the growth in the field of merchant
ship such as bulk ship, oil tanker, and predict
that domestic shipbuilders will receive
orders for more than 13 cruise ships (USD
12 billion) from 2010.
According to ShipPax Information, the passenger
ship magazine published in
Sweden, the number of global cruise ship
passengers in 2008 was 20 million, growing
6% every year despite the global finan-
cial crisis, and the magazine predicted that
the market will expand steadily by over
6.5% in the upcoming year amid the rise of
the new rich in China and India.
Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy
Industries Kim Jing-Wan remarked, “As the
Korean shipbuilding industry essentially
needs to make foray into the cruise ship
market if it wants to maintain its real top
position in the global shipbuilding market,
Samsung Heavy Industries will build a
superb quality apartment-type cruise ship
that can surprise the world, laying the cornerstone
for the Korean shipbuilding industry
to take another leap forward.”
poised to be operational with
the passage of law.
The Ministry of Land, Transport and
country just like the shipbuilding industry,
display the certificate of competency or
of penalty less than KRW 1 million which
was imposed previously, and adhere to the
STX Europe was awarded the
contract for two platform
supply vessels.
STX Europe broke out the news that it
clinched the contract in the special ship
sector in a row, winning the order for two
Platform Supply Vessels. Recently, STX
contracts worth a total of Nkr900m
(KRW approximately 183 billion) by Siem
Offshore for the design and building of two
Platform Supply Vessels.
Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) is a ship specially
designed to supply general consumables
-such as various fuels, food, beverage-
and equipment, materials, personnel
necessary for the drilling to offshore oil platforms
which is a large structure to extract
oil from the sea.
The 4,700-dwt ship will have a length of 88
meters and breadth of 19 meters,
equipped with accommodation for 34 persons,
and will be built at the Brazilian yard
of STX Europe. It will be delivered in 2012
and 2013 and deployed for the pre-salt oil
field development in India Brazil. The
Platform Supply Vessel contracted this
time will be designed by STX Norway
Offshore Design which specializes in the
design of offshore plant and special ship,
and are based on the same design as the
platform supply vessel which Deep Sea
Supply placed order with STX Europe last
October.
Global offshore shipbuilders are striving
aggressively to win contracts for Offshore
Supply Vessels, such as the platform supply
ship that will be deployed in Brazil and
Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels, to
seize the opportunity created by the growing
(FPSO) amid the expansion of marine
resource development projects in Brazil led
by Petrobras, the Brazil’s state-owned
energy company.
In particular, STX Europe holds a firm grip
over the Offshore Supply Vessels market in
Brazil and Central and Latin America, taking
advantage of its geographic proximity
to Brazilian market based on its Promar
Proma shipyard of Brazil, established in
1996, has built various Offshore Supply
Vessels such as PSV (platform supply
ship), Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels
(AHTS), and has secured the volume of
work until 2013. The Offshore Supply
evaluated in terms of local marketability,
exportability and other areas.
Busan Metropolitan Government plans to
fully assist the trade mission in exploring
the business opportunities and arranging
the counselling, as well as the support of
the airfare (50% support of round-trip airfare),
local transportation, export counselling
site, interpretation, and others.
The schedule includes the direct visit to
Hudong Zhonghua shipyard, Shanghai
Waigaoqiao shipyard, and Jiangnan shipyard,
which are the major shipyards of
Shanghai, for the consultation session to
have up-close views of companies, seek
new opportunities for export through the
on-site visit of shipyards, and explore the
possibility of industrial technology collaboration.
In addition, the trade mission will attend the
seminar on the market entry strategy. In the
session, strategies for successful entry into
the market and success cases will be introduced
by the invited sales representatives
of domestic shipbuilding equipment and
material companies that successfully
secured footholds in Chinese market, and
will visit the Marine Tech China, a global
trade show of shipbuilding equipments
and materials, to gain an insight into the
trend of the global market and technology.
China's Shipbuilding industry which shares
over 30% of the global market along with
the ongoing large scale investment is
expected to maintain its steady growth and
has steadily improved the productivity and
amassed the technology, and recently, it
inked up the contracts for high value LNG
ship and titanic containers, which marks a
shift from low-price shipbuilding.
Despite the global economic depression
this year, low shipbuilding price and strong
government support have been a major
booster for China’s shipbuilding industry.
China’s shipbuilding industry has been on
a more solid and steady growth path and
has expanded to an extent that it determines
the landscape of global shipbuilding
market, and the Korean shipbuilding
equipment and material industry with limited
domestic market cannot afford to miss
out on the China’s shipbuilding market.
5 key provinces such as Zhejiang
Province, Jiansu Province, Shanghai,
Guangdong province, liaoning enjoy the
lion's share of shipbuilding in China, and
particularly major shipyards are concentrated
in Shanghai, which suggests that
Korean shipbuilding equipment and material
companies can advance into the
Chinese market with a focus on the cutting-edge
technology and high value products
and will have to approach the market
with efficient marketing strategies.

672 members retire under age limit from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.
- 368 employees have worked for more than three decades.
672 members of Hyundai Heavy
Industries, the heros who built the company
into what it is today - the world's top
shipbuilder - are given laud applause from
junior employees when they leave the
company which provided them with jobs
for life. Hyundai Heavy Industries
announced that a total of 672 members,
including 94 office workers and 578 production
workers, would reach full retirement
age as of the year-end this year.
Hyundai Heavy Industries fixed the retirement
age at 58. Most of those who would
retire under the age limit have worked at
the company for more than 25 years. And
among them, 368 members are looked at
with envious eyes because they have
worked for more than three decades at the
company.
It is quite unprecedented that no less than
700 members reach the retirement age in
the same company, considering that the
notion of job for life disappeared in the
Korean society as the popular jargon
“Saojeong” and “Oryukdo” suggests that
the transfer to another company or retirement
at the age of 40s and 50s is currently
taken for granted across the country.
Particularly, about 600 members of
Hyundai Heavy Industries had the luck of
retirement under the age limit until this year
since 2005, and members close to 1,000
are expected to reach their retirement age
from 2010 to 2014, boosting people's interest
in Hyundai Heavy Industries as the
provider of job for life which can be hardly
found elsewhere.
The compelling reasons why people are
working at Hyundai Heavy Industries until
they reach the age limit may be the best
welfare benefits and job security available
at the company and the pride of members
that they are working in the world's best
shipyard, which is built around the stable
relationship between employer and
employees.
Members of Hyundai Heavy Industries
work an average of 19.4 years. Hyundai
Heavy Industries has been selected as the
“Best Employers in Korea’ four consecutive
time this year for its excellent work environment
by Hewitt Associates, a US personnel
management consulting firm.”
Kim Jung-mok (panel assembly team,
aged 58), who worked for 29 years since
her employment in 1981, said in her retirement
comment, I am very proud that I have
played an important role in building the
company into what it is today, and added,
“I am very thankful to the company and
families who have given full
support for me to focus on
work without any worry until I
reach the retirement age.”
Meanwhile, about 540 people
retiring this year under the
age limit will continue to work
for a year at the production
line of the company on contractual
basis and keep using
their knowledge and skill, and
Hyundai Heavy Industries will
provide them with the wage
equivalent to about 80% of
what they received just before
the retirement, as well as the
same tuition grant and medical
benefits that are provided
to regular workers.
2. Describe your products
1) NK-O3 BlueBallast System
Merchant ships carrying more than 80% of the
world’s commodities are operated with approximately
3 to 5 billion tons of ballast water each year
to ensure stability, trim and structural integrity. At
least 7,000 different species are being carried in
ships’ ballast tanks
IMO requires the Ballast Water Treatment Systems
to prevent introduction of invasive marine species
into new environments by ships’ ballast water as
identified as one of the four greatest threats to the
world’s oceans, causing severe human health, economic
and/or ecological impacts in their host environments
by catastrophic introduction monitored
around the world.
NK adapt Ozone which is the most powerful and
rapid acting oxidizer produced, and will oxidize all
bacteria, endotoxins, mold and yeast spores,
organic material and viruses. Ozone kills a percentage
of invasive marine species by direct contact.
29

30
Company & Comment
The remainder of the invasive marine species are
killed when the ozone interacts with other chemicals
that naturally occur in sea water to create hypobromous
acid. This kills the remaining invasive marine
species.
Both ozone and the hypobromous acid then disintegrate
so there will be no damage to the receiving
water into which the treated water is discharged.
NK received Active Substance G9 Final Approval
from IMO in July 2009 by virtue of its comprehensive
series of land-based tests and shipboard tests
in which revealed IMO D-2 standard and exceed
standard.
NK-O3 BlueBallast system is also awarded Type
Approval from Korea Maritime Administration in
November 2009.
IMO ratified that a ballast water treatment system
must be installed on all ships built after 2012 and all
ships already in service by 2017. The size of market
is expected to be 10 billion dollar.
NK has over 20 patent rights for ballast water treatment
system and is ready to provide the global
shipping industry with a fully approved, highly effective
and extremely practical ballast water treatment
system; supported by NK’s extensive maritime
experience and global sales and service network.
2) High Pressure CO2 System
The carbon dioxide extinguishing system is a fixed
system to extinguish fire by smothering with CO2. It
is a most effective system for protection of machinery
spaces, paint stores and cargo holds.
Advantages include;
As a fire extinguishing agent, CO2 is non-corrosive
and causes no chemical reaction on metals, electrical
insulations and oil, or a mechanical damage to
applied surfaces. CO2 does not deteriorate with age
and can therefore be stored for an indefinite time.
CO2 leaves no residue to be cleaned up after extinguishment
of fire. Therefore the equipment that has
not been damaged by fire can be re-used at once.
NK’s versatile and unique actuating devices enable
simple and reliable actuation of the carbon dioxide
extinguishing system. By the use of copper tube for
the control lines, the cost of the actuating system is
extremely low.
NK carbon dioxide extinguishing systems have
been approved by principal countries’ governmental
authorities and classification societies and
equipped on over a thousand ships.
3) Low Pressure CO2 System
NK LP/CO2 Systems offer all of the advantages of
carbon dioxide fire protection plus:
Large system economy, Minimal maintenance,
Greater versatility, Greater effectiveness in local
application and hand hose line systems, Easy modification
to add protection for additional hazards,
Reserve capability at little added cost, Space saving,
High flow capacities, Easy refilling by tank truck
In Low Pressure storage, a single insulated pressure
vessel is filled to over 90% of its volume with

liquid carbon dioxide and maintained at approximately
20baars, and -20°C by refrigeration.
Units with up to 60 tons capacity are available. In
the Low Pressure system, a central bulk unit normally
serves to protect various hazards spread
throughout the facility. Hazard distances of 150
meter or more can be accommodated but, wherever
possible, the units are located near the hazard,
or centrally to a group of hazards.
The refrigeration of the Low Pressure storage units
is accomplished by a commercial grade compressor,
and refrigeration coil within the vessel near the
top.
Its only function is to maintain the pressure 18 to 23
bars.
Failure of this refrigeration will cause the pressure to
rise slowly.
An alarm system is available to alert personnel to
abnormal pressure levels and, if no repairs are
made within a reasonable time, the unit will refrigerate
it by bleeding off vapor.
Loss rates for this self refrigeration are very low.
4) High Expansion Foam Extinguishing
System
High Expansion Foam fire extinguishing equipment,
a fire extinguishing device that refrigerates the sur-
Foam, can subdue fires related to most of polar solvents
with high inflation
NK high inflation Foam fire extinguishing equipment
is composed of the two components, the one that
uses with air, and the other that uses without air.
Either both of the two components are compositely
used in diverse dangerous situations, or fresh water
or sea water is used to reduce the installation cost.
5) Low Expansion Foam Extinguishing
System
Low inflation Foam fire extinguishing equipment is a
fire extinguishing device that covers the surface of
the fire, and cuts off the air supplied to the center of
the fire to subdue it by utilizing the suffocation and
refrigeration effect, and this equipment is particularly
appropriate for fires by oil.
Mostly installed as fire extinguishing equipment on
decks in tankers and oilers, this system is additionally
installed and used upon other fire extinguishing
equipments of engine area.
6) N2 System
N2 System is a highly effective and excellently fast
fire extinguishing system that is environmentally
neutral and safe for occupied areas and leaves no
residue such as ODP, GWP.
N2 extinguishes fire by physically removing and
reducing oxygen concentration to approximately
12.5% from the atmosphere.
N2 system is ideally suited to the protection of fixed
equipment and plant. They are particularly applicable
for high value risks to protect sensitive equipment
bright future for Ground-Build-Method!
Ra In Ho Co., Ltd.
Ground-Build-Method has gained ground in the shipbuilding
companies recently for its advantages like
shortening the construction duration and saving the
cost of shipbuilding. Nonetheless, the lack of the
know-how and equipment to take the built ship to the
floating dock swiftly and safely has been the stumbling
block to the free application of Ground-Build-
Method in the shipbuilding industry.
Transporters are required to lift up the ship body built
on the ground safely and swiftly.
Dedicated to meeting such requirements through
many years of R&D, Ra In Ho Co.,Ltd has been producing
RTP (Rail Transporter) System and MTP
1. Load Out System
Load Out System is the system to transport the ship
body to the floating dock through the rail transporter
after installing the rail from the land to the floating
dock, and the rail transporter is an integral part for it
among others.
Rail Transporter is composed of two bogies and one
link beam. The bogie has the drive motor for actuation
and the cylinder for lifting. Both bogie and link beam
are designed flexibly for the ground slope of 1.2%.
It has the advantage of saving the time taken for the
coupling because the equipment is positioned individually.
As one unit of equipment can lift 600 tons of
loads, it can adjust the number of equipment depending
on the total weight of ship, capable of transporting
up to 100,000 tons of ship, and is considered to play
a key role in the Land-Build-Method in the upcoming
years.

Using the equipment of Ra In Ho Co., Ltd, Hyundai
tera block less than 30,000 tons and the completed
MTP (Module Transporter)
ship, depending on the number of coupled equipment.
It is coupled with 150 ton (capacity) MTP and is operated
by being connected with PowerPack, the power
supply unit, and SSC (Ship Section Carrier).
The number and arrangement, etc, of the coupled
modules for the transporter are determined by the
size of load and load distribution, and the entire
equipments can be controlled remotely.
3. SSC(Ship Section Carrier)
SSC (Ship Section Carrier)
Ship section carrier can be controlled according to the
predetermined steering program during the drive
operation, and can transport faster than any other
transporters as it is operated as single equipment.
It is ideal for transporting the load over 50 to 1,000
tons such as pre-outfitted blocks, if operated as single
equipment, and can transport the load over 30,000
tons if combined with other SSC or MTP.
Recently, the company produced the special transporter
(800 tons, 7mx22m) and 1,050 ton transporter
ME-GI Dual Fuel MAN B&W Engines (3)
A Technical, Operational and Cost-effective Solution for Ships Fuelled by Gas
MAN Diesel Korea Ltd.
22. ME-GI for Container Ships and Bulk
Carriers
Ships and Bulk Carriers In recent years, we have seen an
increase in fuel prices, and soon we may see a situation
where it is economically feasible to fuel a container vessel
with LNG instead of conventional HFO. If the propulsion of
the vessel is done by an ME-C or ME engine, then it would
also be possible to convert it to run on gas.
On the car ferry Glutra, which is fuelled by LNG from an LNG
tank that has been fitted into the vessel, the system used has
shown that solutions do exist for fitting-in an LNG tank system.
However, further work is required by the shipyard to
investigate the different LNG tank installation possibilities on
larger ships. The space required for the LNG tanks is almost
2.5 times the size of an HFO tank system, due to lower derating
and the heavy insulation required to keep the LNG cold.
The GI engine requires pressurised gas at a max. pressure of
250-300 bar. The technology to pressurise the LNG and
evaporate it at this high pressure is available, and solutions
have been developed by HGS.
The French company Cryostar, known from its cryogenic
expertise, has been developing the gas supply system to be
equipped on ships with natural gas available as LNG.
Cryostar has found that the following equipment is needed
for the gas supply system:
- reciprocating LNG pump for high pressure application.
- automatic pump management system.
- heliflow heat exchanger.
- buffer capacity system.
The gas supply system utilises a Cryostar LNG pump which
is fed by the LNG spray pumps placed in the LNG tank, and
with a head, sufficient to be used as booster. The Cryostar
HPP reciprocating pumps are driven through Variable
Frequency Drives (VFD), so that the pump speed can be
adjusted to follow the engine load diagram that reflects the
fuel demand of the engine.
At this time, it is expected that one high-pressure pump is
installed, no redundancy is necessary, but this can be dis-
cussed with the shipowner. Redundancy in the fuel choice
already exists with the ME-GI.
The Cryostar high-pressure LNG pump will be used to
increase the pressure to a maximum of 250-300 bar and
pass the LNG through a heliflow heat exchanger. The gas is
evaporated and transferred to a 300 bar buffer capacity system.
The buffer system is needed for dampening out pulsations
in the system.
Depending on the layout of the system, the buffer volume
could also be included in the high-pressure pipe volume. The
heliflow heat exchanger requires a heat source to vaporise
the LNG, and this can be taken as hot water directly from the
cooling system of the ME-GI. Alternative steam can be used
to heat the LNG.
The energy required by the HPP LNG pump is very low, and
corresponds to approx. 0.5% reduction of the efficiency of the
ME-GI engine compared with an ME-C engine.
23. LNG tank systems
For merchant ships, several possibilities of equipping the
ship with an LNG tank are available. For smaller ship sizes,
prefabricated vacuum-isolated cryogenic tanks can be found
in a wide range of sizes with an allowable working pressure of
up to 20 bar. Some of these tanks have been installed and
are already in operation on ferries and supply vessels.
For bigger ships, several other possibilities exist, some of
which are listed below:
- Membrane tank design. Dominating for LNG carriers, but vulnerable
to sloshing. BOR range 0.14-0.2%/day..
- Spherical tanks, i.e. Moss type. Self-supporting and invulnerable
to sloshing, but space problems and very few manufacturers.
BOR 0.14-0.2%/day..
- IHI type B tanks. Self-supporting and invulnerable to sloshing.
Low-pressure tanks, and built on a licence in some yards.
BOR 0.14-0.2%/day..
- TGE type C tanks. Single or bilobe design, 4 barg pressure
vessel tank design (up to 50 travelling days), self-supporting
and invulnerable to sloshing. BOR 0.21-0.23%/day.
The IHI B-type tank design and the Ctype design from TGE
seem to be the most promising for larger conventional ships.
Common for both tank designs is that it is possible to operate
the ship with a partially filled tank, which is a basic requirement
when the tank is used for fuel storage. Both of the
designs can be used for LPG fuel as well.
.
The above tank designs have advantages and disadvantages.
For instance, in the IHI design it is possible to adapt
the tank form to follow the shape of the ship, see Fig. 20.
Practically any tank size can be chosen. In the TGE design,
on the otherhand, the hull form can only be followed to some
extent if the bilobe design is used, see Fig. 21. The max. tank
size in the Bilobe design is in the range of 20,000 cum.
Another advantage of the TGE tank design is the ability to
accumulate the BOG in the tank during operation, thanks
to its allowable working pressure of up to 5-6 bar. If a tank
design without this possibility is used, an alternative
method to handle BOG has to be incorporated in the fuel
gas supply system. A list of alternative possibilities in combination
with the gas supply system offered by Cryostar is
shown in Fig. 22.
Technology
With this in mind, it can be concluded that the technology for
a gas driven wostroke ME-GI engine is available. What is
needed is a visionary pioneer within the transport business to
take the lead.
24. Requirements for classification
When entering the LNG market with the combined two-stroke
and reliquefaction solution, it was discovered that there is a
big difference in the requirements from operators and classification
societies.
Being used to cooperating with the classification societies on
other commercial ships, the rules and design recommendations
for the various applications in the LNG market are new
when it comes to diesel engine propulsion. In regard to safety,
the high availability and reliability offered when using the
twostroke engine generally fulfil the requirements, but as gas
delivery and pick-up in the terminals is carried out within a
very narrow time window, redundancy is therefore essential to
the operators.
As such, a two-engine ME-GI solution is the new choice, with
its high efficiency, availability and reliability, as the traditional
HFO burning engines.
Compared with traditional diesel operated ships, the operators
and ship owners in the LNG industry generally have different
goals and demands to when using gas for propulsion,
and that all necessary precautions have been taken to min-
60
Process flow diagram
alternative methods to handle the BOG gas coming from
imise any risk involved. In 2005, HHI shipyard, HHI engine
builder, BCA and MAN Diesel therefore worked out a hazard
identification study conducted by Det Norske Veritas. their
LNG tankers, and they often apply more strict design criteria
than applied so far by the classification societies.
A Hazid investigation was therefore found to be the only way
to secure that all situations are taken into account when using
gas for propulsion, and that all necessary precautions have
been taken to minimise any risk involved. In 2005, HHI shipyard,
HHI engine builder, BCA and MAN Diesel therefore
worked out a hazard identification study conducted by Det
Norske Veritas.
25. Actual tests and analysis of safety
when operating on gas
The use of gas on a diesel engine calls for careful attention
with regard to safety. For this reason, ventilated doublewalled
piping is a minimum requirement to the transportation
of gas to the engine.
In addition to hazard considerations and calculations, it has
been necessary to carry out tests, two of which were carried
out some years ago before the installation and operation of
the Chiba power plant 12K80MC-GI engine in 1994.
26. A crack in the double-wall inner pipe
The first test was performed by introducing a crack in the
inner pipe to see if the outer pipe would stay intact. The test
showed no penetration of the outer pipe, thus it could be
concluded that the double-wall concept lived up to the
expectations.
27. Pressure fluctuation
The second test was carried out to investigate the pressure
fluctuations in the relatively long piping from the gas compressor
to the engine.
By estimation of the necessary buffer volume in the piping
system, the stroke and injection of gas were calculated to see
when safe pressure fluctuations are achieved within given
limits for optimal performance of the engines. The piping
system has been designed on the basis of these calculations.
28. Main engine room safety

A recently finished investigation, initiated by a group of players
in the LNG market, questioned the use of 250 bar gas in
the engine room which, moreover, is located under the wheel
house, where the crew is working and living.
Even though the risk of full rupture of both the inner and outer
pipe at the same time is considered close to negligible and,
in spite of the precautions introduced in the system design,
MAN Diesel found it necessary to investigate the effect of
such an accident, as the question still remains in part of the
industry: what if a double-wall pipe fully ruptures and gas is
released from a full opening and is ignited?
As specialists in the offshore industry, DNV was commissioned
to simulate such a worst case situation, study the consequences
and point to the appropriate countermeasures.
DNV’s work comprised a CFD (computational fluid dynamics)
simulation of the hazard of an explosion and subsequent
fire, and an investigation of the risk of this event ever occurring
and at what scale.
As input for the simulation, the volume of the engine room
space, the location of major equipment, the air ventilation
rate, and the location of the gas pipe and control room were
the key input parameters.
Realistic gas leakage scenarios were defined, assuming a full
breakage of the outer pipe and a large or small hole in the
inner fuel pipe. Actions from the closure of the gas shutdown
valves, the ventilation system and the ventilation conditions
prior to and after detection were included in the analysis. The
amount of gas in the fuel pipe limits the duration of the leak.
Ignition of a leak causing an explosion or a fire is furthermore
factored in, due to possible hot spots or electrical equipment
that can give sparks in the engine room.
Calculations of the leak rate as a function of time, and the
ventilation flow rates were performed and applied as input to
the explosion and fire analyses.
29. Concluding Remarks
To enter the market for a demanding application such as an
LNG vessel calls for a high level of know-how and careful
studies by the shipyard, the engine builder, the compressor
maker as well as the engine designer.
A tailor-made ME-GI propulsion solution and fuel gas supply
system is now available. This system optimises the key application
issues such as efficiency, economy, redundancy and
safety. It is based on conventional, proven technology and
can be applied with considerable benefit on LNG carriers
For LPG carriers, an ME-GI solution for LPG fuel is also available,
including a newly developed gas supply system from
Hamworthy Gas Systems. This solution offers major benefits
such as lower emission levels and lower fuel costs by utilising
the heavy fluctuation between LPG and FO prices.
Also for other ship types, technical solutions exist to use
gaseous fuel. At present, the lack of LNG bunkering facilities
seems to be the biggest hurdle to overcome. Projects are
ongoing to establish LNG facilities, e.g. MEGALOC.
Therefore, in some parts of the world, LNG will be available
as fuel for ships in the near future.
When it comes to naval architecture and marine engineering
and design, Phil imball has “been there, done that.” As the
executive director of the Society of Naval Architects and
Marine Engineers (SNAME), you might say that he is “still
doing it.” Throughout his life, Kimball has gained a wealth of
knowledge and experience in this field and is very qualified in
understanding what makes the industry tick. So, when asked
to give his thoughts about the future challenges facing naval
architects and the technology and resources used to
address these challenges, he was not at a loss for words.
“There are no secrets in this industry,” he said. “There are
sectors that are doing very well, and there are others that are
flat or are in decline.” Kimball’s background is quite impressive,
having started from a traditional naval architecture and
marine design education and background. His career began
with mechanical and ocean engineering degrees from
Stevens Institute of Technology followed by graduate study in
naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of
Michigan. After leaving school in 1967 he was employed with
various companies as a ship designer, working on naval vessels
as well as commercial ships, and later on spent a few
years working with a Paris-based classification society. It was
from this position that he accepted the job as executive director
of SNAME in 1998.
Application
The Challenges and Promise of
U.S. Naval Architecture
SNAME works to promote marine industry growth
Intergraph Korea
1. Industry sectors
In analyzing the industry today, Kimball explained that
SNAME classifies it into four different sectors: large oceangoing
ships; government vessels;
small craft and offshore. Each sector is distinct in terms of the
economic vitality and growth realized from year to year. The
large, ocean-going ships, which include commercial ships,
cruise ships and ferries, are primarily being built outside the
U.S. This sector has been “down” for some time and probably
will never be a major market for the U.S. again.
The small craft sector is booming - in both brown water
(coastal, lakes and rivers) and blue water (ocean) markets.
Although Kimball points out that because of the economy
there is somewhat less activity on the recreational side - less
sail and powerboats - but it is still a vibrant industry. Offshore
(exploration, oil rigs, recovery, storage, etc.) is doing well right
now also. Although one never knows how long that boom
period will last, it has been extremely good for everyone over
the last eight to 10 years and should continue for a number of
years to come.
And, the U.S. Navy sector, which includes submarines to aircraft
carriers, has hit bottom according to Kimball. There are
fewer ships, fewer designers and naval architects than ever,
and the Navy is concerned about this. The naval fleet is 278
ships today - with 50 more targeted over the next 10 years,
but there are major concerns about the loss of expertise in
naval ship design. So, taking these four sectors into consideration,
Kimball feels the outlook and challenges are certainly
ever-present. “There are great opportunities out there for
naval ship designers, and as long as U.S. war efforts don’t
continue to erode those funds, I think you’ll see an increase in
naval shipbuilding in the future,” he said. There is also ample
opportunity for medium-tosmall vessels that can be built in
medium-sized shipyards in the U.S. But, there will be virtually

no more large ship construction.
There will be some activity but no
great numbers - certainly the cost
of building a ship internationally can
be much more favorable in the Far
East than in the U.S. And because
offshore is doing well, that sector is
Phil Kimball
looking for naval architects and
marine engineers. “I’ve seen many instances where people
have transferred from one sector to another because they
see so much opportunity. The offshore area has absorbed
those most interested in changing. Of course, we all know the
oil patch goes in major cycles, so at some point there will be
a dip in that cycle,” Kimball said. According to Kimball, the
U.S. has six large shipyards owned and operated by just two
corporations, around 30 to 40 medium-sized yards, and hundreds
of “mom and pop” yards along the coasts. The smallto-medium
yards continue to have a large workforce in the
U.S. - probably as large as any other sector in the world. “I
think we do have a corner on small craft,” he said. “We’ve got
the technology and capabilities in steel, aluminum, FRP and
composites - it’s still a booming industry.”
2. Sophisticated tools
Kimball keeps up-to-speed about the technologies available
for naval architects and marine engineers through his position
with SNAME. “A naval architect today can use these software
tools quite effectively. “I’ve had discussions with academic
people about some of the problems in teaching. There
is a tug between teaching basic principles of design and
naval architecture versus teaching them how to use the programs.
Most professors feel students should be grounded in
the basic principles before they start using these software
programs,” he said. As for the future, Kimball reiterates that
engineering software has become very sophisticated and the
various modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and
design programs will remain commonplace. With open architectures,
synchronized European and American standards
and integrated software programs, the future is one of interoperability
and sharing. “Although it’s here today, I see common
operating protocols and a big shift toward virtual meetings
between owners, engineers, shipyards and classification
societies - actually designing more or less ‘virtually.’ This
global connectivity will save time and money and be easier
for everyone,” he said.
3. Student outreach
In meeting the challenge of trying to keep the industry vibrant
and attracting young people into the profession, Kimball says
that SNAME is actively engaged in outreach to interest young
people in grades K-12 in engineering in general and naval and
marine architecture, specifically. A few years ago SNAME
started a program with the U.S. Navy called National Naval
Responsibility in Naval Engineering. This included brochures
and videos for distribution to the general public to build attention
and help introduce the profession to future engineers.
SNAME members were encouraged to reach out to local
schools through their guidance counselors, career days, and
presentations to students and this has met great success.
Also, SNAME recently engaged with the Office of Naval
Research (ONR) on a grant to work closely with the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop a project
for students to learn about the principles of engineering by
building a model of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). As
part of the program, the schools’ science teachers receive
training provided at seminars led by MIT to help them understand
the principles and what to teach. Students assemble
the ROVs and test them in pools and ponds across the country.
The kids are having a wonderful time with it and SNAME
even has a dedicated staff member who oversees the program.
This employee gives presentations on the concept and delivers
the kits with all the parts needed - 65 parts in all - to build
an ROV in approximately three to five hours. “The ROV program
has created a tremendous amount of interest around
the country. It’s now to the point we just can’t keep up with it,”
Kimball said. “Part of our mission at SNAME is to advance the
science and engineering of our profession through collaborative
research among members and technology and research
programs. And this student program is right inline with our
mission.” SNAME has approximately 8,500 members as well
as approximately 1,200 student members studying at 27 universities
offering naval architecture curriculums. Kimball thinks
that the group is on the right track to help the profession in all
sectors by engaging today’s youth.
Although schools are graduating fewer engineers in all disciplines,
job prospects are very promising for most sectors in
naval architecture and marine engineering. “Tomorrow’s graduates
will have no problems getting jobs with these types of
degrees,” concluded Kimball. David Joffrion is a contributing
Wärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading ship power system
integrator, has extended its dual-fuel technology to the lower
power range with the launch of the new environmentally
advanced Wätsilä 20DF engine. It offers ship owners and
operators a compact unit that brings all the advantages of
fuel flexibility to auxiliary applications, such as generating sets
or as the prime mover in smaller vessels. The new Wätsilä
20DF engine is a testimony to Wärtsilä’s ability to successfully
utilize gas as a main fuel for marine operations. This makes
gas a practical and attractive option at a time when prices for
liquid fuels are uncertain, and when environmental requirements
are becoming increasingly stringent.
The tightening emission regulations under the IMO Tier II & III
and ECA zone implementations, and volatile fuel prices mean
that ship owners and operators are facing serious challenges.
Solutions for complying with new environmental rules
while maintaining cost-efficient operations vary, but only one -
natural gas - appears to fulfil all the requirements.
1. The Wärtsilä 20DF completes the dualfuel
range
With the launch of the Wärtsilä 20DF, Wärtsilä is extending
the benefits of dual-fuel (DF) technology to cover the entire
power range. Based on the well proven and reliable Wärtsilä
20 diesel engine introduced in the early 1990s, fuel flexibility
means the engine can be optimized for constant speed generating
sets, as well as variable speed mechanical drives, for
main engine applications.
Installed alongside Wärtsilä 34DF or 50DF main propulsion
machinery, a Wärtsilä 20DF generating set completes the
multi-fuel engine room concept. Compact and light, the
Wärtsilä 20DF is intended for use in those vessel types where
68
Application
The new Wärtsilä 20DF engine completes
the range for fuel flexibility for all
marine applications
Wärtsilä Korea Ltd.
the Wärtsilä 20 is currently installed.
As well as being an ideal mechanical-drive prime mover in
smaller applications, such as small cargo vessels, ferries or
tug boats, it is also an excellent choice for harbour generating
set applications in a wide range of vessel types.
2. Main fuel flexibility
Fuel flexibility enables owners and operators to opt for the
most suitable fuel, taking account local environmental restrictions,
fuel price variations, and fuel bunkering availability. A
unique feature of the Wärtsilä DF dual-fuel engines is their
ability to run on Natural Gas, Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), Heavy
Fuel Oil (HFO) and Bio Fuels, thereby providing maximum
flexibility in fuel choice.
In marine applications, fuel flexibility also represents a significant
safety feature. In the case of an interruption to the gas supply,
Wärtsilä DF engines automatically switch to diesel operation
without any loss in speed or power output. Single-fuel installations
do not have this additional level of operational safety.
3. Keeping emissions under control
When a DF engine is running in gas mode, CO2 emissions
are reduced by approximately 20% since natural gas has a
lower carbon content than liquid fuels. The lean-burn combustion
process employed means that NOx emissions are
reduced by approximately 80%, while SOx emissions are
completely eliminated as natural gas does not contain any
sulphur. The production of particulates is practically non-existent
as natural gas has virtually no residuals.
Lean-burn combustion technology results in extremely-low
emission values and very-high engine efficiency. In this process,
the combustion of a lean air-gas mixture is initiated by injecting
a very small amount of MDO as pilot fuel. To obtain the best effi-

ciency and lowest emissions, each cylinder is individually controlled
to ensure operation at the correct air-fuel ratio, and with
the correct amount and timing of pilot fuel injection.
Wärtsilä has further developed UNIC, a special electronic
control system that copes with the demanding task of controlling
the combustion in each cylinder, while ensuring optimal
performance in terms of efficiency and emissions under
all conditions. Stable and well-controlled combustion also
contributes to less mechanical and thermal load on the
engine components.
In gas mode, Wärtsilä DF engines are already compliant with
the forthcoming IMO Tier III regulations without the need for
any secondary exhaust gas purification systems. In liquid fuel
oil mode, all Wärtsilä DF engines are fully compliant with the
IMO Tier II exhaust emission regulations set out in Annex VI of
the MARPOL 73/78 convention.
4. The Wärtsilä 34DF & 50DF
The established Wärtsilä 34DF and Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel
engines have a strong track record. The Wärtsilä 34DF
(435/450 kW per cylinder) is manufactured in configurations
of from 6-cylinder in-lines to 20-cylinder engines in V-configuration.
The maximum mechanical output is 9000 kW and the
engine speed is 720 or 750 rpm for use with 50 or 60 Hz applications.
The Wärtsilä 50DF (950/975 kW per cylinder) is manufactured
in configurations from 6-cylinder in-lines up to 18-cylinder
engines in V-configuration, and has a maximum mechanical
output of 17,100 kW at engine speeds of 500 or 514 rpm.
The Wärtsilä 50DF has a maximum thermal efficiency of 49%,
which is higher than any other medium-speed engine.
Like all Wärtsilä engines, the design of the Wärtsilä 34DF and
the 50DF engines is simple and straightforward. Piping and
external connections are minimized, safety margins are
ample, maintenance is easy and quick, and an electronic
safety protection system is built in.
Wärtsilä 34DF and Wärtsilä 50DF engines represent the core
of an offering that is able to fulfil both local and international
environmental requirements, while maximizing the overall economic
viability in both electrical and mechanical applications.
5. Skills and knowledge
With over 20 years of experience, and more than 1000 gas
engines sold and in continuous operation, Wärtsilä is the
marine sector’s market leader in natural-gas based power
production, and a skilled and knowledgeable partner. To
date, Wärtsilä’s DF technology has accumulated more than
1,500,000 engine running hours, and the total power installed
will reach 4,000,000 kW by the end of 2010.
Wärtsilä’s extended gas product portfolio is supported by indepth
know-how, competence, and design capability.
Wärtsilä is an ideal system integrator whenever there is a
need to optimize propulsion-related equipment. The Wärtsilä
range covers natural gas storage, processing and distribution
onboard, LNG use in DF engines (both main and auxiliary),
power distribution, propulsion equipment, and control and
automation systems. All these elements are integrated into a
comprehensive system designed and produced by Wärtsilä
for each application.
The plaque which certifies the Green Plus “classnotation”
was handed over by Ugo Salerno to Michele Colaninno,
director and general manager of the Immsi group of which
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali is a part. The ceremony was also
attended by Livio Corghi, finance general manager of RCN,
Alberto Castagna, director of the Yacht Division of RCN and
Nicolò Arnaldi, CEO of Yacht Plus, the London company
owner of the Ocean Emerald.
For Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, the certificate is important
recognition of compliance with higher standards of eco-compatibility
than those currently in force. This special recognition
bears witness to the design commitment which Rodriquez
Cantieri Navali has achieved on board the Ocean Emerald so
as to minimise environmental impact? said Livio Corghi.
“Beautiful, incomparable and highly innovative from the point
of view of style and technology, Ocean Emerald combines
the design choices of a famous architect such as Norman
Foster with the most advanced features to be found on a 41
metre yacht”.
2. NOVEL FEATURES OF RINA GREEN
PLUS NOTATION
RINA additional class notation “GREEN PLUS” is a goal
based environmentally conscious and eco-friendly way of
shipbuilding and a powerful tool of ship management.
This notation is developed from the previous environmental
notation “GREEN STAR” considering IMO initiatives taken for
the issue up until now, and is assigned to ships designed
and provided with systems, components and procedural
means to control and prevent the emission of polluting substances
into the sea and the air.

The core requisites for “GREEN PLUS” notation consist of
three criteria, “General Requirement”, “Basic Systems,
Components and Procedural Means” and “Additional
Systems, Components and Procedural Means”
After assessment to the three criteria, if it is found that a ship
complies with “General Requirement” and “Basic Systems,
Components and Procedural Means” and at the same time
follows “Additional Systems, Components and Procedural
Means” by controlling at least nine(9) different pollution
sources and having an environmental index greater than or
equal to 100, the symbol of eco-ship “GREEN PLUS” is finally
granted.
The GREEN PLUS is not a merely another addition to the present
Rule Requirement, but a our sincere trial towards the
better planet earth and the higher performance ship while
meeting all those issues and maintaining seaworthiness.
“The diverse ship solutions of Konics will represent good
opportunities for domestic companies, which have a heavy
reliance on foreign-made products in the ship and shipbuilding
field, to replace imported products with domestic products
that provide far more advantages such as excellent
function, more affordable price, more favorable condition of
delivery and after-sales service.”
SS-4090 Series, vibration resistant thermometer, were
unveiled in a press conference held in Bucheon office of
Autonics Co., Ltd with the attendance of Jin Yeong-Jun, the
sales Director of Konics and Yun Do-Yong, the head of promotion
and planning team of Autonics. The brand new products
are the localized products created successfully by
Konics, a company specializing in the control and measuring
instrument, after three years of development, and can substitute
for imported vibration resistant thermometer which the
industry has depended on import in whole quantities so far.
SS-4090 Series, the thermometer product categories, is
capable of withstanding the heat up to 650°C, developed
Seminars
“Vibration Resistant Gas-Filled Thermometer”,
localized first-ever nationwide
- Powerful vibration resistant(0~2,000hz) thermometer, which the industry
depended on imports, was finally localized after 3 years of development.
Konics Co., Ltd.
through the strict quality control and test of both Konica and
Hyundai Heavy Industries, the most outstanding ship engine
maker of Korea, which commissioned the localization.
So far, the complicated production process of Movement, the
key component, was the major stumbling block to the localization.
Movement is the core component of gas-filled vibration
resistant thermometer and transmits the temperature
change in the detected object based on the properties of gas
that inflates and deflates depending on the temperature.
Jin Yeong-Jun, the sales Director of Konics, said “SS-4090
Series can withstand the vibration without being filled with oil
(it can withstand intensive vibration if filled with oil.), regardless
of the fast speed of medium-sized or large engine which
moves the ship, and about 7,000 to 7,500 engines are
expected to be ordered by Hyundai Heavy Industries,
Doosan Engine, STX Engine, and others, in 2010.” He
added, “If the cost of making an engine ranges somewhere
between KRW 1 million and 2 million, we expect to chalk up
about KRW 3 billion to 4 billion next year in sales(approximately
40% increase from the previous year).”
SS-4090 Series, the vibration resistant gas-filled thermometer
for ship, can be used not only for ship engine but also for
medium-sized and large diesel engine such as power generation
engine.
Konics aims to rake in sales of KRW 10 billion in 2010. The
gas-filled thermometer market is expected to see a change in
the landscape and even fiercer competition as Konics jumps
in this segment of global market which has been dominated
The company says that greater free air delivery means that
smaller compressor cane be used, saving money and energy.
An optional dryer saver cycle further reduces energy
required. To enhance air quality and energy consumption, a
new integrated dryer is incorporated.
All standard marine models are now designed to operate in
powered by Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine
engine.
Rolls-Royce
The vessel’s commissioning was performed on 8
November 2008. A little under 380feet in length and displacing
around 3,000tonnes, USS Freedom is the first of a
new genre of fast, agile and flexible surface warship
designed to fight and survive in the coastal battlespace
now more generally referred to as the littorals. Its rapid
responsible, was only contracted to build this prototype
‘Flight 0’ unit in 2004-reflects the US Navy’s urgent need to
in the air to excel
at sea
- The MT30 is the most
powerful engine in the related market, and it is a cost-saving
high efficient ship gas turbine. Developed based on the
Trent 800 engine, which powers Boeing 777, the MT30 is a
marine engine whose performance and reliability are already
proved in the market.
- The MT30 has been brought to market by Rolls-Royce to
address emerging naval and commercial marine requirements
for a compact, power-dense prime mover.
- The MT30 is ABS type approved at 36MW flat rated to
37.8°C (ISO) and is DNV design assessed for high-speed
Nexans wins a 26.5 million Euros high
voltage underground cable contract for
Victorian Desalination Project in
Australia
88
Project will set the record for the world’s longest high voltage
AC underground cable link rated at over 140 MW
Nexans korea
Nexans, the worldwide leader in the
cable industry, has won a 26.5 million
Euros contract to supply the high voltage
underground cable link that will power
Australia’s largest seawater desalination plant,
currently under construction in the state of
Victoria. The contract covers the supply of
around 260 km of 220 kV XLPE cable, made
and tested as a 275 kV cable, to Thiess
Degréemont which is contracted to design and
construct the 2.2 billion Euros Victorian
Desalination Project to deliver up to 150 billion
litres of water a year to Melbourne and regional
communities.
The Victorian Desalination Project includes an
84 km underground pipeline to connect the
reverse osmosis plant to a transfer main and
then back to the reservoir. The electric power
required by the new plant will be supplied by the
87km long underground cables co-located with
the pipeline - creating the world’s longest high
voltage AC underground link operating at this
power level. An underground link was the preferred
option for the project since it is both more
energy efficient and secure than overhead lines,
and will also have the least impact on landowners,
farmers and other people living and working
in the area.
Olex to manufacture the cable in
Australia
Olex, a Nexans company which serves the
Australia and Asia Pacific markets, will produce
225 km of the underground cable locally at its
Tottenham facility in Victoria. It will be manufactured
on equipment recently installed as part of
a 12.5 million Euros upgrade that now enables
Tottenham to produce XLPE (cross-linked
polyethylene) cables up to 500 kV. The remaining
length of cable will be supplied by the
Nexans factory located in Charleroi, Belgium.
Record Breaking HV AC cable
Currently, the world’s longest high voltage AC
link in operation is the 104 km subsea cable
between the UK and the Isle of Man in the Irish
Sea. However, at 90 kV and 60 MW it is considerably
lower in both voltage and power than the
220 kV, 145 MW Victorian Desalination Project
cable.
Nexans factory in Rognan, Norway. In addition, the contract
also includes the cable accessories such as repair
joints and terminations.
The offshore wind farm market: a great
potential for growth
Over the past four years, Nexans’' share of the offshore
wind farm market has tripled in size. Considering current
political and financial incentive policies, particularly in
Europe, this market should gain importance in the future.
In this market, Nexans offers complete turnkey solutions for
its clients, from manufacturing in its specialized production
unit based in Norway to installation using advanced, dedicated
systems designed in-house. High voltage cables for
typical offshore projects are usually produced in one single
length of about 50 km long - which requires specific industrial
know-how and manufacturing technology - and they
can weigh up to 120 kg per meter of cable according to the
conductor cross-section. A single cable can weigh up to
7,000 tons.
Over the past few years, Nexans has demonstrated its
expertise through participation in many offshore wind farm
projects worldwide: Barrow, Horns Rev, Lynn and Inner
Dowsing, Wolfe Island, etc.
Recently, the Group has also proved its technological commitment
to the continued development of the offshore wind
farm market by supplying and installing the submarine
power cable for the world’s first floating wind turbine in
Norway.
