Girl Scout Leadership Experience
Camp is full of fun activities—archery, swimming, climbing the Alpine Tower, eating in the
dining hall, cooking out, and making friends. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is
central to our summer resident camp program. Through activities and experiences, girls will
gain skills to become leaders who are inspired to make the world a better place. Activities
may include working on Girl Scout Journeys, grade level awards and badges. All campers
will receive a camp patch.
Group and Troop Camp
Spend time exploring the wilds of Camp Graham or Camp Hardee while participating in
swimming, archery, or canoeing. Campers enjoy other fun camp activities unique to the camp
that the group decides to attend. Weeklong and mini sessions are designed for a group of girls
and adults to attend resident camp as a unit. Stay for a weeklong session, arriving Sunday
afternoon and leaving Friday afternoon. For a mini-session, spend three days at camp having
a great time.
At Group and Troop Camp, girls attend with their troop/group leader and other
approved adult chaperones. The resident camp provides a “core” staff, including camp
director, lifeguards, health supervisor, arts and crafts director, and dining hall staff. Each
group has the opportunity to plan some of their own activities and can also participate
in some waterfront activities, sports, crafts, and all-camp sessions led by the camp staff.
Meals are prepared in the dining hall. It really is the best of all worlds—a camping
experience away from home, with troop/group buddies, and meeting new girls from
other areas at camp. A troop/group must have at least 4 girl participants to be eligible to
register for group/troop camp.
typically serve girls ages 6–17 with either daylong or early evening programming. Teens have the special opportunity to serve as
Program Aides at some camps. Our day camps are offered at various locations throughout the council and provide an enlightening
experience for you to explore new things and meet new friends. Check our website or ask your membership director in March 2013
for information regarding day camp offerings in your area. Register online through C.O.R.E. at www.nccoastalpines.org.
pay an additional fee of $75 per camp session (which is
due with the initial deposit and will also cover her
Girl Scout membership fee). Girls who are members of
councils other than Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal
Pines pay an additional fee of $60 per camp session
(which is due with the initial deposit).
Q: Where will the campers sleep?
A: Girls are grouped in units. Depending on their program
choice, girls may sleep in cabins or platform tents. Each
unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters
within the living unit, but close enough to supervise
campers. Counselors sleep in the same cabin in select
sessions at Camp Hardee. These sessions are noted in
the description.
Q: Can my camper attend camp with a
buddy/friend?
A: Yes, we would love for girls to attend camp with a
buddy. During registration there will be a place for the
buddy’s name to be listed, but a camper may request
only one buddy. Both girls need to be in the same age
group, and both must register for the same session.
Sorry, we cannot honor requests for more than one
buddy.
Q: What are camp staff like? Are they trained?
A: Camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring. They
are selected based on their maturity, program
experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All
counselors are at least 18 years old. Before camp begins,
staff attend an intensive on-site training, which includes
activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first
aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building,
program age level characteristics, dealing with
homesickness, and much more.
Q: Are camp staff local?
A: Most camp staff are from North Carolina. However, we
work with Camp Counselors USA to recruit diverse staff
from many different countries around the world. These
staff members share their culture with the campers
through camp activities.
Q: My potential camper has special needs. Can
she come to camp?
A: Each year, many girls with special needs are able to
participate in our camp program. Girls must be able to
function in a 6:1 girl-to-adult ratio. Special needs may
include physical, medical, developmental, dietary,
behavioral, or communicative. It is our hope to be able
to serve all girls wishing to attend resident camp.
Providing a safe and positive experience to all campers
is of utmost importance to us. The council reserves the
right to make decisions of participation based on the
extent of the girl’s special needs and our ability to meet
those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors
as deemed appropriate. We are concerned about the
health and safety of all campers, and we want to ensure
we have appropriate professional and medical services
to meet their needs. With regard to special diets, menus
for programs are planned with the general camp
population and economy of associated costs in mind.
Special diet requests are not generally included in those
parameters. We will make every attempt to provide for

special dietary needs within the scope of our regular menus.
Please contact the camp director at 800.284.4475 to discuss
the camp program and nature of your girl’s needs before
registering for camp.
Q: Can my camper call home during the week?
A: No. We encourage independence and self-reliance. Campers
are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. The camp
director will contact parents if the camper has a medical
problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency.
Please let your child know before camp that she will not be
able to call home and that you are comfortable with this. It is
important that you do not send your child to camp with a cell
phone, as there is little or no coverage—and, most
importantly, it will send a conflicting message to other
campers. We are partners with you in your child’s summer
experience, and we hope that you will support us in making
camp happy and fun for everyone.
Q: Can we visit during a camp session?
A: No. To help maintain program continuity and ensure the
safety of campers, visitors are only allowed at camp during
open house and arrival and departure hours.
Q: What is a typical day at camp?
A: The day’s schedule will vary based on the camp and program
but will be similar to the following:
7:00 a.m. Wake Up
8:00 a.m. Breakfast/Flag Ceremony/Kapers
9:30 a.m. Morning Activities
12:30 p.m. Lunch and Rest Time
2:30 p.m. Afternoon Activities/Unit Time
6:00 p.m. Dinner/Flag Ceremony
7:15 p.m. All Camp Activity
9:30 p.m. Shower Time & Lights Out
Q: What happens if my camper has a difficult time
adjusting to camp?
A: Camp staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to
camp life. However, resident camp staff reserve the right to
send any girl home who consistently exhibits inappropriate
behavior or endangers herself or others. The girl’s
parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up, and fees
will not be refunded.
Q: What measures are taken to ensure my child’s
safety while at camp?
A: We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps for our
campers. Each camp follows the guidelines set by the
American Camp Association, as well as those set by
Girl Scouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints.
Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins and
tents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly. All
camp staff and adults spending the night at camp must
successfully complete a criminal background check.
Q: If our plans change, how do I cancel my child’s
session? Can I get a refund?
A: If your plans change and your camper can no longer attend
her camp session, please notify the council’s camp registrar as
soon as possible. Once you register for a session, you have
made a commitment to that session and are responsible for
payment in full. No refunds are available unless you have a
medical emergency with a written doctor’s statement, or the
session has a waitlist and we can fill your camper’s space. In
those cases, a refund minus the non-refundable deposit will
be considered. Please see page 33 for our refund and
cancellation policy.
Q: When is the last day to register for camp?
A: Camp registrations will be accepted until two weeks prior to
the session your camper wishes to attend. After May 1,
registration must include payment in full. For late
registrations, please note that your camper must have a
doctor’s signature on her health history form in order to
attend camp. Campers must have had an exam within 12
months of the last day of her session.
deposit is also required for all adult campers. If a group is
to the remaining balance of the group. Groups may charge
additional fees for transportation, extra snacks, or other
the fee. Financial assistance is available.
* Camp Kaleidoscope Returns
to Camp Graham!
For the past 34 years, Camp Kaleidoscope has been a
huge part of Camp Graham. Through Camp Kaleidoscope,
chronically ill children are given a chance to take a break
from hospitals and have fun in the outdoors. The boys
and girls who attend Camp Kaleidoscope have noncommunicable
chronic diseases such as cancer, asthma,
kidney disease, or heart disease. Doctors, nurses, and
other professionals from the Department of Pediatrics at
Duke University Medical Center spend the week with the
campers in the Kaleidoscope Program. They participate
in all aspects of camp. For most of these kids, going to
Camp Graham is their first camping experience—because
they cannot go camping without doctors, nurses,
therapists, and special equipment. Without the
Kaleidoscope program, many of the children would never
have a chance to experience the fun of summer camp!
This year, girls and boys in the Camp Kaleidoscope
program will be at Camp Graham during the weeks of
July 7-12, July 14-19, and July 21-26, 2013.
Group Leaders are provided with sleeping accommodations
separate from the campers but within the same unit. They
are close enough for supervision. A group reserving less than
the entire unit will share the unit with other groups. In this
situation, all the adults will share one tent or cabin.
Additional adults must pay the $165/$85 fee (minimum 2
adults with any size group to follow Safety Activity Check
Point ratios). Groups must have at least 4 girl participants in
order to register for group camp.
Group Camp fills up fast because it is so much fun!
Registration for Group Camp will open prior to the opening
date for traditional summer camp. Register online through
WAY
TO GO!

Camp Costs
Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines
understands the value of camp and continues
to provide financial support to offer these
important programs at affordable rates. Camp
fees cover most direct costs—such as food,
program supplies, supplementary health and
accident insurance, and camp counselor
salaries. Indirect costs— such as planning and
administering the program, registration, and
property maintenance—are costs subsidized by
the council.
In addition, financial assistance in the form of
“Camperships” enables all girls to enjoy the
Girl Scout camp experience. Camperships are
made possible thanks to our many generous
donors. To make summer resident camp
possible for a girl, please make a donation to
the Campership Fund during the online
registration process or on the registration form.
Donations are tax deductible. (See page 33 for
Campership information.)
Final Payment Date
All camp fees must be paid in full by May 1, 2013. Camper’s registration will be cancelled and no refund
33 for Campership information.)

Camperships
Financial assistance for resident camp, group camp, day camp, and special programs is available to currently
registered Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines members who are unable to pay the total cost of a
camp experience. A girl must be a registered member by February 1, 2013, to be considered for a
campership.
Prior to applying for financial assistance, campers must be registered for a camp session and have paid a $75
non-refundable deposit.
Camperships are awarded based on need, active participation in the Girl Scout program, and information
provided on the Financial Assistance for Summer Opportunities Form. The Campership Committee makes
every effort to use available money fairly to assist as many girls as possible. The deadline for applying for
financial assistance is April 3, 2013.
Applications received after April 3, 2013, will be reviewed on an ongoing basis if funding is available. All
applications are handled in a confidential manner. As these funds are limited, please submit an application
for assistance as soon as possible after registering for camp.
To provide assistance to as many girls as possible, camperships will be awarded for only one session of
camp and do not cover the cost of Camp Extras. The amount of assistance per girl will not exceed $165 for
traditional weeklong sessions, $250 for specialty sessions, or $125 for group camp.
To apply for a campership, complete the online Financial Assistance for Summer Opportunities Form on our
website.
REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY FOR RESIDENT CAMP
A significant amount of planning time and money are spent several months prior to the start of camp. It is
also difficult to fill open slots as the summer approaches. Therefore, it is important to contact the Help Desk
at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org as soon as possible if the camper is unable to attend camp.
If the camper has a medical emergency that prevents her from attending camp, a refund request less the
nonrefundable deposit will be considered if submitted with a written doctor’s statement two weeks prior
to the camp session.
If the camper becomes unable to attend camp for other reasons, the council can refund the session fees less
the deposit only if the camper’s slot is filled from the waitlist.
If the council cancels the camp session, all fees (including the deposit) will be refunded.
If the camper is on a waitlist and cannot be placed in a session, the total fee (including the deposit) will be
refunded.
Fees for Trading Post gift cards, camp care packages, T-shirts and photos are fully refundable with a twoweek
notice prior to the camp session.
