<strong>Snapshot</strong> on Family Medicine Cares
Family Medicine Cares, an exciting new initiative launched in
2011, supports the start-up efforts of new, free clinics nationwide
that provide care to the underserved. Working in collaboration
with the nonprofit organization Volunteers in Medicine (VIM),
Family Medicine Cares provides grant money
for the purchase of tangible items — such
as exam tables, EHR systems, and medical
equipment — needed to
open a new clinic’s doors.
The program also provides
opportunities for retired and
active physicians, residents,
and medical students to volunteer
their time and talents
at the clinics.
To date, Family Medicine
Cares has provided
grants to two new clinics,
Space Coast Volunteers in
Medicine, which opened
in April 2011, and Bluffton
Jasper County Volunteers in

This past year involved many new projects
for the Foundation. A major humanitarian
program, Family Medicine Cares, was
launched in order to provide grants and
volunteer opportunities in support of new
free clinics. (See story above.)
Two more new programs were
launched with a focus on diabetes
management and prevention, including
Highlight on Diabetes, which helps
our Chapters provide resources on
diabetes for physicians and patients,
and Cities for Life, which was created to
facilitate healthy lifestyles and diabetes
management through the patientcentered
medical home.

Medicine, which opened last October. The clinics have already
seen more than 1,500 patients and provided over $1.2 million
in services to those without healthcare. Interested in donating

Grant applications are now being
accepted for the current Family
Medicine Cares grant cycle.
Applicants for a Family Medicine
Cares grant must be a new clinic
nearing completion of the VIM
development process, and they
must have an AAFP member in
a leadership role within the clinic.
Primary consideration will be given
to clinics with an AAFP member
serving as chief medical director.

Another new initiative is the Fellowship
in the History of Family Medicine, which
provides funds for using the collection
of the Center for History of Family
Medicine to advance understanding and
appreciation of Family Medicine.
On the international level, the Foundation
provided more than $40,000 for disaster
relief efforts in Japan, in addition to
supporting the development of Family
Medicine around the world through
ALSO, the Center for International
Health Initiatives, and Physicians with
Heart. For its 20th and final mission,
Physicians with Heart made its fourth trip
to Kyrgyzstan, where over 30 volunteers
distributed medical equipment and

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As we look towards a new year for our
AAFP Foundation, I hope you are as
encouraged as I am by the Foundation’s
many achievements in 2011. It’s been a time of
great activity, both in terms of launching new
programs, supporting the specialty of Family
Medicine, and continuing the good work
that means so much to people in need. For the third year in a row,
the AAFP Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity
Navigator — its highest rating possible!
As your new Foundation president, I’m honored to do my part to
continue this important work for Family Medicine through programs
like Family Medicine Cares. This major new humanitarian program

will have a lasting impact on improving the health of the uninsured
in our communities and will shine a light on the heart and
importance of Family Medicine.
As you read the following articles about the Foundation’s recent
activities, remember that these achievements have only been

Family Medicine Global Health Workshop
The AAFP Foundation is pleased to continue supporting the AAFP Family Medicine Global Health Workshop, which was
created in response to an increased interest in the global development of Family Medicine.
The 2012 workshop will be held in Minneapolis (September 6-8). This year’s focus will be on the important role Family Medicine
plays in providing international care and how Family Medicine can impact health in countries around the world. Special
emphasis will be placed on how to facilitate students and residents in their global health experience. Attendees will have ample
opportunities to network and share their experiences through interactive Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and special events.

Global Impact: Peers for Progress
At a forum sponsored by Health Affairs
this January, an exciting new study was
presented regarding the impact of peer
support programs in the management
of diabetes. The
study was presented
by Edwin B. Fisher,
PhD, Global Director,
Peers for Progress
(an AAFP Foundation
program).
The study, titled
“Peer Support for
Self-Management
of Diabetes Improved Outcomes in
International Settings,” outlines how peer
supporters — non-professionals who
Family Medicine Interest Groups Rock
have diabetes or are closely familiar with
its management — can be successful in
helping patients achieve improvements
in symptom management, diet, blood
pressure, body mass
index, and blood
sugar levels.
The study began in
2008 and involved
four projects
conducted in
Cameroon, South
Africa, Thailand,
and Uganda. All
four projects included meetings among
the participants that emphasized
“pragmatic” aspects of diabetes
Through financial support from donors to the AAFP Foundation, more than 142
Family Medicine Interest groups (FMIGs) were eligible to receive funding this year
for the activities that reach out to and engage students on the front line — at their
medical schools.
New requirements for the FMIG Funding Initiative in 2011 opened the program so
that FMIGs could complete a community service or advocacy project to qualify
for the funding. The Huntsville Campus FMIG chose to take advantage of the new
requirements, completing a community service project that engaged third- and fourthyear
students: The Very Hungry Caterpillar/Summer of a Million Books program.
Through the program, five medical students and two faculty members partnered with
the North Alabama Medical Reserve Corps, Reach Out and Read Alabama, and the
North Huntsville YMCA to read to 80 toddler and preschool children and discuss
healthy eating choices. A segment of the children were also given full physicals.
The AAFP is able to provide support for this FMIG, and so many others, through the
AAFP Foundation and its donors. Your continued donations are both appreciated

Your Donations Save Lives Around the World
Your support of Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) helps family physicians and
other maternity care providers develop and maintain the knowledge and skills they need to
effectively manage emergencies during pregnancy and delivery. ALSO is now administered
in 60 countries around the world; in addition, Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSO)
and GLOBAL ALSO curriculums are available for use in developing countries. BLSO and
GLOBAL ALSO offer topics not normally dealt with in developed countries, such as TB
and malaria during pregnancy. The ultimate goal of these training options is to decrease
maternal and neonatal mortality. For more information about the ALSO program visit

Thailand even installed a community
garden with a converted bicycle to
power irrigation while providing an
opportunity for patients to exercise.
Ultimately, the study reveals the impact
and significance of social and emotional
support in the management of chronic
disease. While international in scope,
researchers believe that the findings
could have important implications for
health reform in the United States. To

2012 Student Externship
Matching Grants
Each year, AAFP Chapters or
Chapter Foundations who intend
to sponsor a Student Externship
may apply for a matching grant of
$1,250 per externship from your
AAFP Foundation. The goal of
the grant program is to stimulate
interest among medical students
to select a career and/or pursue
research opportunities in Family
Medicine. A listing of the Constituent
Chapters that will be receiving the 25
matching grants for the 2012 Student
Externships are now available

Your Foundation at Work
FMPC Grant Funds
Each year, FMPC Grant Awards provide funding to support programs of the AAFP
Constituent Chapters and Chapter Foundations that help to fulfill the mission of improving
the health of all people. In 2011, FMPC Grant Awards funded 28 programs from 17 states
for a total of $102,000 in funding.
Funding for the FMPC Grant Awards Program is provided
by up to 40% of the revenues received from the Dues
Check-Off Campaign.
Projects funded in the past have included research projects,
bicycle helmet giveaway programs for youth, educational
programs designed to enhance communication
between physicians and patients with limited English skills,
workshops and conferences for residents and medical
students, initiatives to promote public nutrition and fitness,
leadership and advocacy training meetings for physicians,
and much more.
The deadline to submit the 2012 Grant Application is June
15, 2012. These competitive grant awards are available only to AAFP Constituent Chapters
and Chapter Foundations. Each state may submit up to three applications per year; applications
can be submitted by the state AAFP Chapter, Chapter Foundation, or both.

Tar Wars
Family physicians have enthusiastically embraced Tar Wars for more than 20 years,
and the tobacco prevention program continues to be rated highly by AAFP members
in terms of awareness and value. Tar Wars is supported by your AAFP Foundation.
Preparations are currently underway for the Tar Wars 25th Anniversary in 2013.
In 2011, Tar Wars awarded the first ever national
video contest winner in addition to the outstanding
first place poster contest winner. The video
and poster contests reinforce the tobacco-free
messages received in the classroom. Additionally,
the Tar Wars program guide has new supplemental
classroom activities to further stimulate and elevate
the student’s creative experience and learning
about peer pressure, the media, and emerging
tobacco products. There is also a new initiative to
increase the Tar Wars reach to children in military

New Online Collection Resource
The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) is proud to announce that the third revised edition of its collections
catalog, Guide to the Collections of the Center for the History of Family Medicine, is now available online.
The CHFM’s catalog features a complete listing of the Center’s archival, library, and museum holdings, which serve
to document the history, development, and practice of Family Medicine throughout the history of the specialty.
Beginning in February, the completely updated third edition of the guide will be available as a free, downloadable
pdf file at www.aafpfoundation.org/chfm.

On the national level, the Foundation
provided $102,000 in FMPC grant
awards to support the work of our AAFP
Chapters and Chapter Foundations,
and continued support of Tar Wars and
AIM-HI educational programs. Over the
past 18 months, the Foundation has
funded more than $260,000 in support
of Joint Grant Awards Program (JGAP),
Research Stimulation, and PBRN
Stimulation grants.
For the third year in a row, the AAFP
Foundation received a four-star rating
from Charity Navigator, the highest rating
from America’s largest independent
charity evaluator. You can rest assured
that your Foundation is a good steward
of your gifts in support of Family
Medicine philanthropy.
Last but not least, the Foundation
provided 125 scholarships for Family
Medicine residents and medical students
to attend the AAFP National Conference

are now resident members of the AAFP,

Highlight on Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes currently affects nearly 1 in 12 Americans, and
by the year 2050, it is projected that it will affect as many as
1 in 3. Because family physicians play an integral role in the
management of diabetes, the
AAFP Foundation and the Family
Medicine Philanthropic Consortium
(FMPC) are pleased to announce a
new grant program that will support
these efforts. The Highlight on Diabetes
grant program is designed
to improve the management of
diabetes by providing educational
