elcome to the first issue of ‘H<strong>and</strong>s Up For K<strong>in</strong>der’ newsletter for<br />

W2010 from <strong>Chatswood</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Evidence <strong>in</strong>dicates that form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> strengthen<strong>in</strong>g the l<strong>in</strong>k between school<br />

<strong>and</strong> the community ensures more efficient plann<strong>in</strong>g for the transition to<br />

school. This newsletter will provide current <strong>in</strong>formation on K<strong>in</strong>dergarten<br />

activities <strong>and</strong> other events at our school to families of children prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to enter school <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Chatswood</strong> area. Any suggestions <strong>and</strong> comments for<br />

the next issue of “H<strong>and</strong>s Up for K<strong>in</strong>der” <strong>in</strong> June are most appreciated.<br />

Digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

soil <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

worms <strong>and</strong> observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

plant life are just two ways<br />

<strong>in</strong> which our K<strong>in</strong>dergarten<br />

students are identify<strong>in</strong>g ways<br />

<strong>in</strong> which liv<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs are<br />

different <strong>and</strong> have different<br />

needs. This has been a<br />

focus for our K<strong>in</strong>dergarten<br />

students this term. The<br />

highlight of this learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was creat<strong>in</strong>g a ‘worm<br />

farm’ with the assistance<br />

of the Environmental<br />

Education Centre Field of<br />

DID YOU KNOW?<br />

OVER A YEAR …<br />

CHILDREN SPEND<br />

15% OF THEIR TIME AT SCHOOL<br />

& 33% OF THE TIME ASLEEP –<br />

WHAT THEY DO<br />

THE REST OF THE TIME IS UP<br />

TO YOU!<br />

AROUND THE SCHOOL<br />

Last Tuesday 92 Year 4 students went<br />

to Camp Yarramundi. Everyone had a<br />

great time <strong>and</strong> the activities such as rock<br />

climb<strong>in</strong>g, low ropes,<br />

cave maze, fly<strong>in</strong>g squirrel<br />

<strong>and</strong> bush craft were both challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> enjoyable. For some students this<br />

was their first camp <strong>and</strong> they had to be<br />

extremely brave <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent. Year 4<br />

are now really look<strong>in</strong>g forward to their<br />

Year 5 camp next year.

TALKING AND<br />

LISTENING<br />

When we th<strong>in</strong>k of<br />

school, we usually<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k ma<strong>in</strong>ly about the skills of<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g – however be<strong>in</strong>g able<br />

to communicate with other children <strong>and</strong><br />

with adults is also very important.<br />

Children need to develop ways of shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their ideas <strong>and</strong> ways of listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

respond<strong>in</strong>g to others.<br />

How can you help at home?<br />

Encourage your child to talk about<br />

different topics<br />

Ask your child questions start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with what, who, where, when <strong>and</strong><br />

why to encourage more <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

Encourage your child to expla<strong>in</strong><br />

their reason<strong>in</strong>g to you when they<br />

are mak<strong>in</strong>g decisions<br />
