Democratic Debate our girls engage with actual politicians Following the previous week’s 6th Form visit and workshop at Parliament, on Thursday 11th October the politicians came to visit us here at BHS for a parliamentary style event in our Theatre. David Seymour of the European Movement formally debated against Harry Aldridge of the UK Independence Party with Mr Seymour proposing the motion ‘The EU is a force for good’. Whilst the event was geared towards students in Years 11 – 13 I was delighted to see a significant number of girls from across all year groups and broad participation, during the floor debate, with questions and observations that really put the politicians on the spot. Following concluding speeches from both speakers the motion was put to the vote which saw a significant majority voting against the motion. It was fantastic to see so many of our girls engaging in the democratic process with actual politicians here at Blackheath: hopefully some of our girls will be winning seats in Parliament in the future! I look forward to our next international political event in March, when our girls will be forming delegations to represent different countries at a Model United Nations Conference at City of London, Boys. Mr Parsons Terrific Toothbrush Collection During our assembly last week raising awareness of The Nasio Trust we were asked to donate toothbrushes for the children there. The Nasio Trust runs two Day Care Centres in West Kenya, providing children with education and food. Following the fantastic response, Sue Russell from the Nasio Trust said she was overwhelmed by the response to her request for toothbrushes by the girls’ and their parents’ kindness and generosity - 256 toothbrushes in total have been donated! This means that everyone at the two day care centres will be able to receive their own toothbrush! Sue said that she “really enjoyed taking the assembly, comparing lifestyles and health of the two sets of children” and was “very impressed with the pupils’ ideas and enthusiasm” Sue sends a big thank you from the Nasio Trust. New facility makes ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ a reality The latest addition to the accommodation at the Senior School is a wonderful timber ‘outside classroom,’ installed in the area adjacent to the Dance Studio. The impressive structure measuring 8m x 4m, is complimented by an individually laid cedar tile roof and has been very well received by enthusiastic students, eager to make use of the space. With three large planters to the front, and a large number of colourful picnic cushions, it is an attractive and welcome new facility.
SPORTS NEWS Under 15 Netball Team Perform Well Under Pressure! On a bright, sunny day, U15 Netball Team travelled by mini bus to The Annual Trust Netball Tournament in Northampton. The girls played really well and maintained their composure throughout, even managing to score a couple of goals against last year’s National Champions! I would like to congratulate the team on their fantastic performance, they were a credit to themselves and to Blackheath High School. Thank you and well done to Elizabeth Salami who was an excellent captain on the day. A Team Yasmeen Cooper Saskia Bigg Alex Brilliant Alice Jones Clem Mcfarlane Harriet Aubertin Elizabeth Salami Sarah Oladele Player of the Tournament: Clementine McFarlane Our Juniors are Jubilant at the Tony James Memorial Cross Country Competition 9th October 2012 On 9th October, 30 very excited, Y4,5 and 6 girls travelled to the Annual Independent School Cross Country event run by Bees Academy. A record breaking 15 schools took part with nearly 200 competing in the Year 5/6 race and 150 in the Year 4 race. We saw some fabulous individual performances and were placed 8th overall.
